In this Greatest Hits episode we're revisiting a conversation about market disruption and big goals. JT Marino shares the story of his dream to build a company that would disrupt the mattress industry. JT Marino was the co-founder of Tuft & Needle, and this is his story of bootstrapping his way from nothing to the largest online mattress retailer in the world. JT, who is now the Chief Strategy Officer for SSB Phoenix, joins us to share his incredible story. We talk about why customer-centricity was one of Tuft & Needle's core principles from the beginning, and the role it played in their eventual merger with Serta Simmons. JT shares his thoughts on the importance, as a founder, of having an intimate understanding of how every aspect of your business works, and why they decided not to take any outside investments when they first started out. This is one of my favorite founder interviews we've done and I hope you enjoy it! Episode Highlights 4:58 Introducing JT Marino 6:47 How the friendship and partnership started between the founders of Turf & Needle, JT and Daehee 11:13 How the Tuft & Needle co-founders maintain a strong friendship while running a business together 12:51 How JT's prior experience with heavily-funded, but unsuccessful, Silicon Valley start-ups influenced Tuft & Needle's decision to not take outside investments. 17:21 The importance of identifying “the problem” when you're building a business, and how this led to the creation of Tuft & Needle 19:28 Some of the other principles the Tuft & Needle founders committed to before starting their business 22:11 How JT and Daehee used a problem-solution approach to determine whether they had a product-market fit for Tuft & Needle 27:59 The benefits of being highly involved with and having an intimate understanding of every aspect of the business, from manufacturing to supply chain to marketing 31:30 How Tuft & Needle moved through the pit of sorrow and started to scale 35:12 How a Hacker News blog post contributed to explosive growth of Tuft & Needle 37:51 The importance of customer satisfaction and word-of-mouth to Tuft & Needle's success, especially when they had a limited advertising budget 39:40 The various channels that helped grow the business over time 42:45 JT's approach to tracking attribution across a variety of channels 45:55 How Tuft & Needle developed advertising techniques and targeting that span across digital and non-digital 50:34 The unconventional reason Tuft & Needle started selling on Amazon 53:39 The Net Promoter Score target T&F set before making the decision to list on Amazon 56:10 JT's advice if you're considering selling on Amazon and the importance of looking at the market picture as you start to grow 59:35 The role customer-centricity played in Tuft & Needle's decision to merge with Serta 1:06:46 The future of the mattress industry 1:09:48 JT shares his hobbies and what's in store for him in the next year   Links And Resources Tuft & Needle How to Get Startup Ideas by Paul Graham Blog: How we bootstrapped to the #1 rated mattress on Amazon.com Meet the Warby Parker of Mattresses JT on Twitter: @johnmarino JT@tn.com The Coalition @a_brawn on Twitter Review or subscribe on iTunes

Our guest for this episode was Los Angeles based trumpet performer, composer/arranger, and teaching artist John-Thomas (“JT”) Burson. JT has collaborated/performed with Chicago’s Fulcrum Point New Music Project, the Flauto d'Amore Project, Festival Napa Valley, Aspen Music Festival, Sunset Blvd Brass, and the Georgia Symphony Orchestra. In the episode, we talked about JT's philosophy of practicing and teaching, and how he has adapted to musician life during COVID-19. We also talked about his more recent interest in composing music and how he approaches the concept of creativity. Overall, it was a good episode and it left me with a more hopeful mindset about the future of art, music, and creativity, and how we can all adapt to the weird times that we're in. Today I had the pleasure and honour to interview JT McCormick (CEO of Scribe Media). JT is a true hustler. Looking at the challenges and trauma that JT faced as a child you would believe that he had every reason NOT to succeed. JT was born the mixed-race son of a drug-dealing pimp father and a orphaned, single mother on welfare. He was raised in the slums of Dayton, Ohio, suffered incredible abuse and racism, and had multiple stints in the juvenile justice system. He barely graduated high school and has no college degree. Starting by scrubbing toilets, JT hustled and worked his way into better opportunities, eventually finding incredible success in the banking and mortgage industry. He was on top of the world. And then the mortgage industry fell apart. He lost his job, and literally all of his money. He had to borrow from his friends to make rent. He was nearly back to where he started: with nothing. But this time, he had something that he did not have growing up in the slums of Dayton: the knowledge of what it takes to succeed. JT used this setback combined with what he learned as the springboard for him to reach even bigger heights--eventually becoming President of two multimillion-dollar companies.Currently, JT is the President and CEO of Scribe Media. He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Megan, and their four children; Ava, Jaxon, Elle and Jace. How to connect with JT…LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jtmccormick/Website: https://jtmccormick.com/Time Stamps…02:22 – What did JT want to be when he grew up?06:52 – Never wanting to be in a position of life never knowing what to do at the age of 8.09:25 – Writing book for JT’s children and his children’s response to JT’s story.12:15 – JT’s parents and growing up as a child.14:20 – JT’s mother, the first 9 years of JT’s life.16:35 – JT’s view on women.18:15 – How to trust women after being sexually abused by women.20:15 – Not seeing himself as a Victim. 22:05 – Mindset on how to deal with Trauma. 23:10 – Not speaking to father for 30 years before he died and what would JT say? 25:30 – Drug dealers have an entrepreneurial mindset.27:20 – Drug dealers and pharmaceuticals.30:08 – Seeing the first $1M come through.31:28 – Being negative broke and how JT rebuilt himself.37:08 – How to scale a business.38:00 – No-one talks about the Sacrifice that goes into success.40:54 – JT’s definition of success.41:38 – How JT became the CEO of Scribe Media.47:30 – How can start up’s hire an expert with little money.50:51 – Advice to Millennials & Gen Z’s.51:50 – The 3 words that JT has eliminated from his vocabulary.56:03 – What does JT do when he deals with challenges.57:25 – What JT would want his children to say about their father.59:43 – 1 lesson learned from JT’s childhood.01:01:58 – What impact does JT want to have on the world? After hearing this he decided to take the runway approach to FI; saving up for several years, quitting his job but still working 10-15 hours a week on a different project that will produce revenue. He is nowhere near meeting the 4% rule, but that's absolutely fine with him because he's still making money and has several years saved up in case the projects don't work. 2 - How JT quit his job 2 weeks ago JT started talking to his boss about quitting in December of 2018, giving his company a good amount of time to find a replacement. Gwen explains that many people fall into two camps when quitting a job; either telling their boss well in advance and helping them find a replacement, or letting them know 2 weeks before quitting. This is really because it depends on the relationship with the manager and boss. JT tells us that he was lucky to have a good boss and his excellent relationship with his managers is what allowed him to make a large amount of money from the start. 3 - Land investing as an income JT's current project is real estate investing with a twist. He sources land below market price and then sells it to the market at a discount. He explains that it's an easy model since it mostly uses all cash and the transactions are fast and easy. The hard part is finding the land at below market place. So far he's done deals on 16 properties and it takes him 3 months or so to sell them off. This is a great model since he explains that he gets cashback and residual income, and can expect at least a 100% return. Questions? Like or dislike? Leave us a comment! Want to support the podcast?
