On today's show, Darius interviews JeVon (JT) McCormick, CEO of Scribe Media, who shares with us his thoughts on racial injustice, socio-economic inequality, company culture, and much, much more. Born a son of a black pimp father and an orphan mother, JeVon was in one of the juvenile systems in his formative years. And early on in his career, he had to overcome racial injustice as he tried to cement his place in corporate America. He talks about his changing his name from JeVon to the more ambiguous, JT before changing it back to JeVon in light of the recent BLM moment. We also talk about company culture. And how working at a “people-first” software company was an eye-opening experience for JT after his experience in the banking sector.   Because both Darius and JT come from the mortgage world, they also reminisce about the subprime crisis. While banks were blamed for the financial mess, Darius and JT argue that the people (borrowers) were equally responsible.  As a huge proponent of conscious capitalism, Jevon is passionate about creating opportunities for at-risk youth. A board member for Conscious Capitalism and the StartEdUp Foundation, he has mentored young men and women in the juvenile justice system, as well as those in the lower economic communities. Episode 135 – True Modern Leadership with JeVon McCormick   We are delighted to speak with an amazing individual today! JeVon McCormick is a phenomenal person and an incredible leader! He is the CEO of Scribe Media and the author of the bestselling book Modern Leader.  JeVon is top-ranked with Glass Doors and received Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur of the Year. He was named Best CEO in Austin and Best Culture Company in America! He joins us today to talk about his personal and professional life, share his experience, and discuss his take on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We hope you enjoy listening to today's inspiring conversation with JeVon McCormick! About JeVon JeVon McCormick was born the son of a Black pimp father and a white single mother on welfare. Poverty, abuse, eviction, and discrimination were a daily part of his life. Today, he's the CEO of Scribe Media, a multi-million dollar publishing company that was recently ranked the #1 Top Company Culture in America by Entrepreneur Magazine. JeVon's experiences shaped a mindset for modern leadership that now guides his service as the CEO of a massively successful company that's redefining the world of publishing. JeVon's journey JeVon's mother grew up in an orphanage. She had JeVon when she was still technically a child herself. Growing up in the 1970s was hard for JeVon because he was half black and half white and never felt he belonged. He was always trying to fit in. He got molested as a child and was in and out of juvenile prison. He never graduated from high school and had to attend summer school to get his GED. A game-changer JeVon's dad drove him through a very affluent Houston neighborhood when he was about ten. He had never seen homes anything like the ones he saw there before. It was a game-changer for him because it showed him what was possible. As a result, wealth became his goal. His first job JeVon's first job after getting his GED was cleaning restaurant toilets. After about a month, he decided to make them the cleanest toilets in Texas. Then he resolved to be the best at whatever he did from that moment forward! What's in a name? After struggling for some time to get a better job, JeVon thought people were reluctant to hire him because he had a black name. So he began to go by JT McCormick. A week later, callbacks, invitations, and appointments began flooding in. From then on, he built his career on the name JT McCormick.   Reclaiming his name  After the murder of George Floyd, JeVon realized that changing his name made him part of the problem. So he reclaimed his name for all the kids with ethnic names living in similar communities to the one where he grew up. Jevon's credo Jevon lives by putting people first. He believes in people, processes, and profits and feels that people should use their profits to do great things for the communities they live and work in. Awards JeVon is grateful for and proud of his awards. However, he finds it interesting and quite funny that we celebrate CEOs when CEOs are only as good as those they serve and support. CEO A CEO is a foundational piece of any company. Their role is to serve and support everyone else. They should never make decisions to benefit themselves. Covid Modern leadership got tested during Covid because there was no playbook for the virus. Covid revealed the difference between true leaders and playbook leaders. Even before working remotely became a thing, JeVon told his people to take whatever they needed from the office to build a comfortable workspace at home. He also announced that no salaries would get reduced, and no one would get laid off. DEI JeVon does not see DEI as an initiative because diversity has no start or finish. He feels it should be referred to as diversity, equity, and inclusion rather than DEI because actually saying the words opens up a real conversation. He also points out that most Fortune 500 chief diversity officers are black women, many of whom are now coming out and saying they are getting no support in moving their DEI initiatives forward. Modern leadership JeVon has been a successful leader because he puts people first and does things differently. He does not want to recruit and retain people. He prefers to attract great people and provide them with a phenomenal culture, meaningful work, and great salaries.  Language Much of the language used in business today comes from an antiquated playbook. People don't realize that some of it even comes from the plantation business model. For example, referring to people as “human capital”, or “greatest assets”, implies human trafficking or slavery.  Respect As Americans, we need to respect others, listen to them, and seek to understand their lived lives. We need to ask questions and learn from others.  History Rather than being destroyed, offensive statues should be placed in museums because they are part of history and serve to educate future generations.  Do the right thing Seek to do what is right for all people. Do the right thing just because it's the right thing to do. Don't do it for a buy-in or something that might be in it for you.     Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website   Connect with JeVon McCormick On his website On Instagram      On LinkedIn         On Youtube             On Twitter             On Facebook           On TikTok   Scribe Media

Scribe has removed all the barriers and frustrations to writing, making it much easier to turn your ideas and knowledge into a great book. Here's how it works: We Validate Your Idea: Before we even work with you, we help you clarify your goals, and your book idea, and make sure that you have a good book in you that will be appealing to an audience and get you an ROI. We Position Your Book: One of our world-class Scribes—who range in experience from professional journalists to bestselling authors—will help you get crystal clear on precisely what your book will say, who your audience is, and why they will care about your book. We Create Your Book With You: You and your Scribe will then conduct a series of interviews to get your knowledge and wisdom out of your head and into an audio recording. The Scribe will begin to write down some pages, showing you the work as you progress. This is not ghostwriting; the ideas, words and even the voice are entirely yours. We Publish and Distribute It: The biggest thing that separates ‘real' books from those that feel amateur is professional design and distribution. We Do Book Marketing: We will set up your first week promotions, making sure that everyone in your network knows about the book and reviews it. We also book you on the Author Hour Podcast, and get you several pieces of media. Marcel Schwantes calls this episode “one of the most authentic and real and raw conversations” he has ever had. His guest, JT McCormick, is the CEO of Scribe Media, a multimillion-dollar publishing company that has been ranked the number one Top Company Culture in America by Entrepreneur magazine, and number two Best Place to Work in Texas. JT is the author of I Got There: How a Mixed Race Kid Overcame Racism, Poverty and Abuse to Arrive at The American Dream. He joins Marcel to chat about his amazing life story - his journey from scrubbing toilets at a restaurant to becoming President of a million-dollar software company, and now CEO of Scribe Media - and to share the lessons he learned along the way. JT says, “If you wake up in the morning and your feet hit the ground, you've got to be excellent… Anything that's not excellent in my life I'm the only one that can change it, so there's no need to complain about it, just get to work.” [3:45] “My why is to be a phenomenal husband, a phenomenal father, a phenomenal CEO. And then I would say fourth on the list is to give back to the communities which I came from.” [5:07] Marcel asks JT how he overcame all the adversity of his early life. He replies that he refused to be a victim. He decided, at age eight, not to spend his time trying to get everyone to like him, because some people just would not. This early lesson spared him years of grief. Another fundamental lesson he learned was to believe in himself. [8:38] “I just tend to look at things from a positive standpoint… I choose to figure out, How can we make a positive out of a negative situation?” [10:20] JT shares his journey from scrubbing toilets to President of a software company. Two lessons he learned were to be the best at whatever he did, and the magic of compound interest. [12:22] When JT was promoted to President, it struck him that he was only as good as the people he surrounded himself with. As such, his focus shifted to finding the greatest people to surround the company and himself with. [17:03] “If you are in a leadership position, you're only a leader if you serve,” JT argues. He describes how the principle of putting people first is lived out at Scribe Media. [18:05] Marcel asks, “How does a company become number one in the category of culture?” JT responds that it's a matter of the little actions taken every day to live out your principles. At Scribe Media, they work with each other, not for JT. They bring their whole selves to work: he doesn't believe in a work self vs a home self. He shares several practices they adopt at the company that build the culture. [22:37] JT and Marcel discuss Scribe Media's Culture Bible, which is freely accessible to the public. They talk about three of the principles listed in the Culture Bible:  Do right by people; Bring your whole self to work; Ask questions. [26:46] “A lot of times you can eliminate questions in transparency,” JT points out. [33:21] JT explains why he disagrees with the remote work trend. [35:37] “What's your best advice for business owners trying to stay resilient during these crazy stressful times?” Marcel asks. JT advises leaders to put their people first, be transparent, be visible and let people know where they stand. Let people feel safe, he adds, and if you have to pivot or make other tough decisions, make them early and let people know so that you can set their expectations. [39:35] JT teaches through sharing his mistakes. [44:19] “I can't become something that I don't even know exists,” JT says. “...I believe if people just know what's possible they can strive to achieve that.” [46:19] “I live by a formula: Mindset, choices and hard work equals success.” [48:48] Resources JT McCormick on LinkedIn JT@ScribeMedia.com I Got There: How a Mixed Race Kid Overcame Racism, Poverty and Abuse to Arrive at The American Dream

On this episode, we talked about: Different ways to perceive masculinity, suicide is not an option,  believing in myself, wanting all without sacrificing, stop hoping and wishing, social media as a waste of time, we can always create more time and so much more! "I only knew how to survive, I didn´t know how to embrace someone else or understand someone else's feelings" "Suicide is the most selfish thing you can do because you may ease your pain, but you leave other's behind with it" "If you believe, if you truly believe that you can have something, you have to go execute to make that happen"   About JeVon: JeVon "JT" McCormick shouldn't have succeeded. He was born the mixed-race son of a drug-dealing pimp father and an orphaned, single mother on welfare. He was raised in the slums of Dayton, Ohio, suffered incredible abuse and racism, and had multiple stints in the juvenile justice system. He barely graduated high school and has no college degree. Starting by scrubbing toilets, JeVon hustled and worked his way into better opportunities, eventually finding incredible success in the banking and mortgage industry. He was on top of the world. And then the mortgage industry fell apart. He lost his job, and literally all of his money. He had to borrow from his friends to make rent. He was nearly back to where he started: with nothing. But this time, he had something that he did not have growing up in the slums of Dayton: the knowledge of what it takes to succeed. JeVon used this setback combined with what he learned as the springboard for him to reach even bigger heights--eventually becoming President of two multimillion-dollar companies. Currently, JeVon is the President and CEO of Scribe Media. 22. From Son of a Pimp and an Orphan to Successful CEO with JeVon "JT" McCormick How does the son of a pimp and an orphan with the name of a Scotsman, living impoverished, in squalor, grow up to be a corporate hero and leadership scholar? How can you be empowered by your story - and not defined by it? And why is achieving the American dream not always a reason to be proud of where you came from? Welcome to The StoryPowers Podcast, the show about the power of stories, the people who tell them and why you should be doing it too. I'm your host Francisco Mahfuz. My guest today is JeVon "JT" McCormick. JeVon shouldn't have succeeded. But none of that stopped him becoming the President of two multimillion-dollar companies. Currently, JeVon is the President and CEO of Scribe Media. You can find him on jtmccormick.com. If you like the show, please leave us a rating on Apple podcasts, share it and SUBSCRIBE! The support is very much appreciated. And please send me your comments on what you'd like to hear on future episodes. I'm a keynote speaker, author, public speaking and storytelling coach. Marcel Schwantes calls this episode “one of the most authentic and real and raw conversations” he has ever had. His guest, JT McCormick, is the CEO of Scribe Media, a multimillion dollar publishing company which has been ranked the number one Top Company Culture in America by Entrepreneur magazine, and number two Best Place to Work in Texas. JT is the author of I Got There: How a Mixed Race Kid Overcame Racism, Poverty and Abuse to Arrive at The American Dream. He joins Marcel to chat about his amazing life story - his journey from scrubbing toilets at a restaurant to becoming President of a million dollar software company, and now CEO of Scribe Media - and to share the lessons he learned along the way. JT says, “If you wake up in the morning and your feet hit the ground, you’ve got to be excellent… Anything that’s not excellent in my life I’m the only one that can change it, so there’s no need to complain about it, just get to work.” [3:45] “My why is to be a phenomenal husband, a phenomenal father, a phenomenal CEO. [18:05] Marcel asks, “How does a company become number one in the category of culture?” JT responds that it’s a matter of the little actions taken every day to live out your principles. At Scribe Media, they work with each other, not for JT. They bring their whole selves to work: he doesn’t believe in a work self vs a home self. He shares several practices they adopt at the company that build the culture. [22:37] JT and Marcel discuss Scribe Media’s Culture Bible, which is freely accessible to the public. They talk about three of the principles listed in the Culture Bible:  Do right by people; Bring your whole self to work; Ask questions.  [26:46] “A lot of times you can eliminate questions in transparency,” JT points out. [33:21] JT explains why he disagrees with the remote work trend. [35:37] “What’s your best advice for business owners trying to stay resilient during these crazy stressful times?” Marcel asks.

"The phrase 'fail fast' is complete bullshit. The goal is to learn faster. You only fail if you stop trying." - JT McCormick How did JT McCormick use unimaginable darkness to shine a light on his true potential? Why is maintaining perspective a game changer in entrepreneurship? How can failure become a character-building force for good? Why is gratitude a tool for grounding that every leader should use? Overcoming Adversity And Challenge JT McCormick, CEO of Scribe Media, has a unique perspective on adversity. Despite the challenging circumstances in which he grew up, JT has established himself in the entrepreneurial world and become an inspirational leader to many. In this episode, JT shares his unbelievable story and the triumphs and setbacks he experienced along the way. He explains how he leverages adversity for growth, works through personal and professional challenges, and how you can use dark moments to become the person you're meant to be. Maintain Perspective And Amplify Gratitude Through life-shaping experiences, JT has shown a remarkable aptitude for maintaining perspective, particularly in regards to failure both in business and in life. For any entrepreneur, failure and success are in the eye of the beholder. JT explains his empathetic mindset founded on a daily dose of gratitude and explains why he believes true failure only happens when you quit. How To Cultivate The #1 Company Culture In America In 2018, under JT's watch, Scribe was named by Entrepreneur.com as the #1 company in America for company culture. Every company wants to attract and retain the most engaged team members, so what's JT's secret? We discuss the sense of belonging that keeps the tribes of Scribe accountable, happy, aligned on shared objectives, and always asking questions. Plus the three Ps that rule JT's CEO leadership style: people, process, and profit — in that order! Key takeaways: Take ownership of your story. Through sharing his story of overcoming adversity, JT demonstrates how endurance and hard work allowed him to take control of his destiny and become the leader he is today. For him, that meant not being afraid to ask for what he wants, and having the conviction to see every ambition through. Know thyself. During challenging financial situations, it's easy to play the blame game with external forces. According to JT, by turning the focus on yourself and your character, you can emerge from the fire stronger, a better person, and with a solid ethos of personal pillars to carry you forward in your personal and professional life. The best leaders teach. While cultivating his winning company culture, JT's goal was to fill the room with people smarter than himself — and he meant it. He explains why focusing his efforts on teaching, mentoring, and training his people allows Scribe to grow, improve, and lead the market. Punk Rock HR Episode 117: JeVon “JT” McCormick is the CEO of Scribe Media, a publishing company that helps authors write, publish, and market their books. More importantly, he is someone with an incredibly interesting backstory.  JT grew up amidst chaos, never went to college, and started his career in labor-intensive jobs. Yet, through these experiences, he managed to understand society better. That eventually became his avenue to success. Now, he runs a company that published the most sought after book in America last year: Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. He also recently wrote a piece that appeared on CNN.com and went viral. In today’s episode, we talk about work, power, politics, money, the Coronavirus, Black Lives Matter, and what it means to be a leader in uncertain times. In this episode you’ll hear: What got JT to where he is today. His chaotic origin story that helped contribute to his business success. The 3 rules of leadership he lives by. Why the future of work should be a combination of remote and office space. The toxicity of binary thinking. How to create a culture of trust. How to measure success in a way that honors employees. The changes and conversations that have occurred in Scribe Media amidst COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement. The role of corporations in addressing the systemic problems in our country.   Resources from this episode: Scribe Writing JT's Website JT on LinkedIn Napolean Hill's Think & Grow Rich   Laurie on Instagram Laurie on LinkedIn Read more from Laurie Work with Laurie   *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. Nick’s special guest this week is JT McCormick, the CEO Of Scribe Media, ranked #1 in Top Company Culture In America by Entrepreneur Magazine! There’s no one in the world more qualified (officially) to tell you how, and why, you should be building a world-beating culture in your business today.   KEY TAKEAWAYS  Challenges and barriers in early life were taken not as roadblocks, but as lessons that helped JT to grow stronger. Sometimes the things that beat us down make us more determined. JT has always led by three principles: People, processes, profits. Good people will swiftly enable the following two principles.  We need to be constantly questioning everything. Those who inquire, discover. There’s no such thing as a stupid question.  There’s no such thing as failure. You only fail when you stop trying. The goal is to learn, not-repeat, and grow from the mistakes.  Great companies are never built by one person. They are the cumulative product of the collaborative efforts of great people.   BEST MOMENTS ’That chaos has actually helped me in business’ ‘With great people we can build great processes and make great profits’ ‘I never want to be the smartest person in the room’ ‘You only fail if you stop trying’     VALUABLE RESOURCES JT McCormick LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jtmccormick/ JT McCormick - https://jtmccormick.com Scribe Media -  Scale Up Your Business - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/scale-up-your-business-podcast/id1453523566 Join the free Scale Up Your Business community:  https://buff.ly/2JR1cTF  Generate 20 New Leads in 20 Days - download your free 5-step guide to put in place my top-performing customer creation strategies:  https://buff.ly/2ZiN26Y   ABOUT THE HOST My name is Nick Bradley. JT McCormick has overcome a lot of obstacles. I mean, a LOT of obstacles.  His mother was an orphan. His father was a pimp and drug dealer. Upon being deserted, JT was forced to live with his father's prostitutes for years, taking care of his younger step-siblings at the tender age of 8-years-old.  JT received his High School diploma from the janitor during summer school. At one point, he was homeless and lived on a park bench.  Your day doesn't seem so bad right now, does it? JT got into sales. He was the lowest paid employee and became the President of the company in 2 years.  He is now the President & CEO of Scribe. He is business partners with bestselling writer Tucker Max.  How did he do it? How did the overcome the odds and become an inspiration to everyone he comes from? “Life truly is mindset and choices”  — JT McCormick It seems so simple, right?   It is.  But that doesn't mean it's easy.  Though his mindset is strong, JT's actions separate him from the pack. He didn't become this way through luck; it was through old-fashioned hard work.  In this interview, he illustrates that his day starts at 3:45 am. He spends the early morning time reading and studying past entrepreneurs and businesses to learn from their paths.  Then he gets a workout in. Once his family is awake, he spends time with them and is off to work.   He's already learned, exercises and spent time with his family before his “workday” really begins.  Life is full of choices and sometimes that requires sacrifice.  “You have to sacrifice. Don't run from it — everyone has to sacrifice something”. Take a page from JT's book. Maybe things aren't as bad as they seem.  Maybe you CAN change your life after all.   Mindset, choices. DC is an entrepreneur, podcaster, author and CEO of Drift, one of the hottest start-ups in SaaS. Mario is the host of The Never Settle Show and a nationally known motivator. JT McCormick shouldn't have succeeded. But succeed he did.Starting by scrubbing toilets, JT hustled and worked his way into better opportunities, eventually finding incredible success in the finance and mortgage industry. JT used this setback combined with what he learned as the springboard for him to reach even bigger heights--eventually becoming President of two multimillion-dollar companies.Currently, JT is the President and CEO of Scribe Media. JT McCormick is an American businessman, author and speaker. He served as President of technology company HeadSpring before his current role as President & CEO at Book in a Box.   Book In A Box has created an entirely new way to write a book. Instead of sitting at a computer for a year or more, being frustrated with the process and not sure you're doing it right, they take your ideas, and put them into a book in your words, and your voice. All you have to do is talk to them on the phone, and know what you're talking about.   In his book, “I Got There”, McCormick describes the years between ages 10 and 13 as some of the most difficult in his life, dealing with sexual abuse, being homeless and in and out of juvenile detention centers without much structure before moving in with his Uncle Bobby from 13 to 15.   In this episode you'll learn: [01:10] How did JT become the CEO at Book in a Box? [03:20] How not to build a company around yourself? [04:15] How to transition an agency away from being focused on a personality to being focused on the brand as a whole? [05:50] What are the differences in marketing strategies between Book in a Box and JT's former company? [07:48] What are the bare minimums before you go out to recruit a CEO? [10:00] Why did JT fire people when he came into his new company as a CEO? [13:15] How does a founders stay invested with the success of the company when they are no longer CEO? [14:00] What were some of the financial things that JT found were wrong and he had to fix? [15:23] How did JT re-structure the team? [17:00] What did the sales process at Headspring look like? [19:05] Why is outbound strategy not the right fit for selling Book in a Box? [20:26] Where should an agency be in terms of structure and revenue before hiring an external CEO?
