Struggling to get your art in front of the right people? Then this episode is your roadmap. Join multidisciplinary artist Courtney Minor on "This Is How We Create" as she unveils the emotional underpinnings of her creative journey—from finding fresh inspiration in Vietnam to transforming personal therapy into powerful art. Courtney doesn't just inspire; she delivers actionable strategies for marketing your work, building a devoted email list, experimenting with unexpected materials, and connecting with collectors who truly value your vision. This isn't just about making art—it's about making making a place for your art in the world Here's what we discuss: Courtney Minor is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in collage, photography, and film. Her trip to Vietnam was a pivotal moment that reignited her creative spark. Art serves as a therapeutic outlet for Courtney, helping her express emotions she struggles to verbalize. She combines various mediums, including collage and graffiti, to convey her messages. Courtney's journey reflects the importance of embracing one's identity and creative voice.  Courtney creates prototypes in her head before starting. She collects artifacts and photographs for inspiration. Plexiglass allows viewers to see their reflection in her work. Prototyping is essential for her larger art pieces. Sourcing materials often involves unconventional places like Home Depot. Understanding her audience has been crucial for her sales. Building an email list is vital for artist outreach. Social media algorithms reward video content over static images. Connecting all platforms is important for artist visibility. Artwork Archive simplifies the inventory process for artists.   Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Courtney Minor and Her Art Journey 02:04 The Turning Point: Vietnam Trip and Creative Rebirth 12:08 Childhood Influences and Early Artistic Aspirations 16:57 Emotional Expression Through Art: The Therapeutic Process 20:06 Navigating Personal Loss and Its Impact on Creativity 30:03 The Artistic Process: From Emotion to Creation 31:07 The Art of Prototyping 36:47 From Ideas to Canvas 40:01 Sourcing Materials for Art 43:13 Marketing and Selling Art 55:26 Exploring New Mediums and Techniques   Get to know Courtney: https://thecmdstudio.com/pages/copy-of-about-courtney-minor  Courtney's Instagram: heyitscourtneyminor  Buy Courtney's Art: https://thecmdstudio.com/collections    Keep up with your host Martine Severin https://martineseverin.com/ Follow This Is How We Create https://www.instagram.com/thisishowwecreate_/ Subscribe to our Newsletter: https://martineseverin.substack.com Follow Martine on Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/martine.severin/   This is How We Create is produced and edited by Martine Severin. Summary This week on Live Like the World is Dying, we have a cross posted episode from the Strangers in a Tangled Wilderness podcast because it was just very relevant to the themes on this show. We have an interview with Henri Feola, talking about the state repression, getting through being in jail, and his new zine "The Veil Between Worlds is Plexiglass: notes, doodles, and poems from an incarcerated forest defender." If you want a copy of this zine, head to www.tangledwilderness.org. About the Zine On January 18, 2023, Atlanta police murdered Tortuguita, a protester defending the Weelaunee People's Forest. Three days later, a vigil was held in downtown Atlanta, after which property destruction occurred and two police cars were set on fire. Myself and five others were arrested in the vicinity of the vigil. We all received the same set of charges, including domestic terrorism. All but one of us were denied bail and remained in pretrial detention. The state did not have to provide any evidence of our alleged crimes, or argue the facts of the case, in order to incarcerate us. The broken and overcrowded penal system in Atlanta forced us to wait months to appear in court again and argue for bail; many of our fellow inmates were in the same situation, waiting months or years for court appearances. I was released with a $25,000 bail and orders to leave the state of Georgia on April 26, after 96 days in jail. This zine is a lightly edited collection of writing from my time in jail. You can visit https://defendtheatlantaforest.org/ for more information on the Defend the Atlanta Forest movement.** Guest Info Henri Feola (he/they) is a writer, musician, abolitionist, and mutual aid organizer based in Appalachia. GAMÉLArtist's Statement:"In 2020, I left the tech industry and moved to Palm Springs to pursue my passion for art full-time. During this time of adjustment, I worked on a painting titled  "The Other Side",  which proved to be prophetic. In January 2022 I experienced a personal tragedy when my mother passed away from COVID-19. In spite of this sorrow, I found solace and purpose in my artwork which helped me to cope. My works are unique in their use of color, space and materials, drawing on influences from the Renaissance period as well as 60's Pop Art and 21st Century design. The themes explored in these pieces reflect my struggles with life experience and strive for self-alteration. My works often combine hyperreal painting with a variety of materials such as acrylic, oil, steel, wood, transparent resin and Plexiglass to create an immersive viewing experience for the viewer.By August of 2022 I opened my own gallery in Palm Springs where I exhibit these pieces. In my continual pursuit of self-expression, knowledge and experiences, I am constantly challenging myself to create pieces that are distinctively my own. My aim is to produce artwork that tells a story of resilience and what it means to be human, ultimately striving to evoke an atmosphere of eternal search or hunger for meaning. Through this work I have found healing in the midst of tragedy and hope in spite of life's struggles. I believe that art is a powerful form of communication and I strive to create pieces that are both informed and individualized, reflecting the depths of my soul for all to witness. My journey continues with each canvas and every brushstroke as I work towards a brighter future. Thank you for joining me in this exploration".                                                                                                 Gamél/Palm Springs, CA/September 2023Web:  https://www.jongamelart.comInstagram:  https://www.instagram.com/jongamelart/email: jon@jongamel.comPhoto: Copyright Wilkinson/2023Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

In this experience Vinod shares his experience of flying to and from Beijing in the first quarter of 2022. Due to Chinese regulations he was required to be in a closed loop separate from the general public. That included flights. In pre-pandemic times there are many flights between Vancouver, Canada, and various cities in China. Currently there are none. So...how do you get a Canadian (and others working with Vinod) into China? Due to complexity of the situation, Vinod only got his booking confirmation four days before departure. He needed to follow very specific timelines for COVID testing. The routing had three stops: Vancouver to San Francisco to Tokyo-Haneda to Beijing-Capital. All of his timings for entrance were based off the final leg of his flight. His flights took place in January 2022, while airspaces were still normal. The flight into Beijing was restricted without any general public on them. Due to China being the end destination, online check-in was not possible. As he departed Vancouver with Air Canada, the region was still under the impact of the Omicron variant and the airport was eerily quiet. When he arrived in San Francisco, it was as if there was no pandemic at all. Then Vinod boarded an ANA flight to Tokyo-Haneda. The amount of legroom was amazing on an incredibly clean plane with impeccable service. Vinod had a very early arrival into Tokyo. He had stayed at Haneda in the summer of 2021. Then he left for Beijing on Japan Airlines and was blown away by the service, an incredible premium economy seat and one of the best in-flight economy meals Vinod has had in a long time. As the plane took off, Vinod could see his hotel room from Summer 2021. The plane took a very scenic route with beautiful views of Tokyo and Mount Fuji. And then, he landed in Beijing. Terminal 3 was sequestered for Vinod and other flights coming into the closed loop. There was throat and nasal COVID tests -- Vinod has never had a worse nasal test than this one. Surface sanitizing was everywhere, the ramp crew was all wearing PPE, and all that sanitizing had aged the new terminal vey quickly with corrosion and white gunk everywhere. Plexiglass became opaque -- which made for a humorous moment at immigration. He picked up his bag and boarded a bus. As an avgeek, the experience was incredible Vinod -- riding airside at Beijing Capital. As they travelled on the highway the bus had a police escort. Two hours later Vinod ended up at his hotel and waited for his test results, at which point he was able to continue in the closed loop. 38 days later... It's time to go home. There were limited slots and passenger load factors available for Chinese flights. Based on these limitations, Vinod had a round-the-world return to Vancouver -- of about 39 hours door-to-door. Beijing to Doha, Qatar, to Toronto, to Vancouver. Upgrades were available for a reasonable price, so Vinod took the upgrade. And three days before departure, he learned that the Qatar Airlines flight had an upgraded interior. Leaving China was much easier than arriving. Yet again, the airport was empty -- with no services open, except for one solitary water fountain. They boarded early. In Vinod's words, "When I stepped on that [Qatari] aircraft, I thought I was going to cry." He had a suite with a door with incredible levels of service and quality. The bed, the food, even the lavatory -- Vinod had a pinnacle level of experience. Then he arrived in Doha for early morning transfer rush hour. Vinod had to stand aside for a few moments and let his brain recalibrate. After some duty free shopping, he boarded his very long Air Canada flight 059 to Toronto. It was February 24, 2022, and normal routing was no longer available over Ukraine. Once the flight reached the Red Sea, it made a hard left turn and then flew up through western Turkey. The flight kept going and going and going...eventually landing in Toronto. Canadians can be chosen on landing for a random COVID test...Vinod was chosen. Now what? "I have to do the test, but I have connection bags." His bags may have been a bit over the limit and his carry-ons were maxed out. Oh no, Air Canada has a sizer and scale! But he was connecting -- issue solved. After being in a zombie-like state on the last domestic Air Canada leg, Vinod finally arrived home in Vancouver. Climate change and its impacts on the economy, the planet, and, of course, us, is top of mind for a lot of folks these days. One potential solution that merges economic and climate needs is the transition away from fossil fuels as an energy source, to greener options. But with so many people relying on the fossil fuel industry for their livelihoods, how do we ensure a transition to a whole new energy source is just? This is one of the many questions we touch on in today's episode. Our guests, Luisa Da Silva, Executive Director of Iron and Earth, and Heather Milton-Lightening, a long-time Indigenous climate activist and current student, share with us their different views on just transition, and what we need to consider if we're really going to make it work.

You have to think about dimensions, sunlight, flooring, lighting, generators, restrooms, connectors, weather...basically, if you need tenting for your outdoor wedding, you need to hire an experienced professional. Like Kathy! She talks about how to tent a wedding without breaking the bank - tricks of the trade to glam up a basic tent: lighting, swagging, pre-fab ceiling liners (as opposed to hand-pleated). Covering a pool - a flooring and rental company can do it! Plexiglass, staging, raised walkway above the pool, boarding it and putting astroturf down, lots of options. Backyard weddings, private estate events...just because you get a ‘free' space, doesn't mean you'll save money. In fact, typically, it costs more to transform a space into a venue. Michelle and Kathy break down the logistics for a 75 person backyard wedding...for example, a clear tent may be a hard NO, depending on the location and weather - they act like greenhouses and can get super hot and uncomfortable. Kitchen generators, lux porto potties, distances that the set up techs will have to load -in, permits, noise ordinances... There are many variables and everything is customized, so getting a price estimate isn't a simple formula. Plan B. The Bad Weather Plan. You have to decide this plan in advance (not a week out), and then 48 hours beforehand, you can decide if you're using the plan B or not. And then, fingers crossed. (A deposit will be required to hold the inventory, and have a crew standing-by.) Delivery and Strike - these times have to be arranged when you book your rentals. The prices depend on the time allotted and the crew/equipment needed. This can be expensive. Labor is the biggest cost in the rental industry.
