Director Lisa D'Apolita takes us back to a time before there was Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street, to the world of Shari Lewis and her lovable cast of puppets, including Hush Puppy, Charlie Horse, and the most beloved puppet of all time, Lamb Chop. In 1960, while still in her early 20s, NBC gave Shari her first national network show, The Shari Lewis Show, replacing The Howdy Doody Show. Lewis quickly became a pioneer in television and changed the face of children's entertainment. She created a playful, non-judgmental world for children and adults alike, inviting us not just to 'be ourselves,' but to be the best version of ourselves we can be. She used her puppets as her voice – to say the things that women couldn't say in mid-century America and to take control over her personal story. Over five decades, she was able to straddle two very different worlds as a performer, conquering both children's and more mature entertainment; from her Saturday morning program to her late-night talk show performances and Las Vegas club act. Lewis also won dozens of awards – including 13 Emmys and a Peabody – published 60 children's books, and finally found a way to achieve her dreams as a performer and managed to stay relevant with her age defuing comeback in her 60's, endearing her to a new generation with Lamb Chop's Play-A-Long. Shari used her renewed popularity to reinforce her commitment to children's education. Director Lisa D'Apolito stops to talk about why she believes that Shari Lewis remains so under appreciated, delves into the unique psychology that exists between performer and puppet, and the peculiar world of ventriloquism and magic and how Shari and Lamb Chop became one of the most unique and enduring “comedy teams” in American culture. Remember her sock puppet Lamb Chop, a sock with eyes. She originally designed the little character for the Captain Kangaroo Show. Her puppets first got attention on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts TV show, where she won first prize. Her Shari Lewis program replaced the Howdy Doody Show and ran for three years. Shari also wrote many books for children. She and Lamb Chop also did some singing.

Former child actor turned Grammy-winning producer Dennis Scott, recounts his journey from auditioning for commercials with dyed black hair to producing hit albums for Sesame Street and learning to let the musicians do their thing. With a start on Broadway at just seven years old, Dennis quickly learned what it takes to make it in the business. After his time as a child actor, he joined the New Christie Minstrels, a popular folk group, and began writing songs. Dennis eventually became a powerhouse producer and songwriter in the music industry, working with some of the biggest names out there. With his vast experience and knowledge, Dennis is sure to offer invaluable advice for aspiring musicians. This episode is sponsored by: Beck's ShoesIn this episode:The Impact of Mr. RogersThe Role of a ProducerStaying Grounded in the Midst of FameHumble Beginnings Bio:Two-time Grammy Award-winning songwriter/producer/writer DENNIS SCOTT has left no corner of the children's music industry unexplored. His songs have been performed by such diverse artists as Faith Hill, Ray Charles, Sugarland, Alison Krauss, The Muppets, Amy Grant, CeCe Winans, Trisha Yearwood, Elmo, Charlie Daniels Band, Shari Lewis, Crystal Gayle, Roberta Flack, Ricky Skaggs, and many others.Dennis is also the recipient of two Emmys, a Parent's Choice Award, and a Telly. You can hear his work on television, radio, audiobooks, home videos, and stage productions such as "Clifford the Big Red Dog," "Sesame Street Live," and "The Magic School Bus."Dennis began his entertainment career at the age of 7 as an actor on Broadway. As an adult, he toured with the New Christy Minstrels (playing upright bass and singing). His novelty tune "Captain Kirk's Disco Trek" led to his first serious foray into children's music and a Grammy for "Sesame Country." He has had nonstop assignments since then.Dennis has served a music director for several children's TV shows, including the PBS series "Noddy" and, most recently, "BJ's Teddy Bear Club" which airs on TBN and just earned him his second Emmy award. His album, "Songs From the Neighborhood - the Music of Mister Rogers" won last year's Grammy award as Best Musical Recording for Children.Recently Dennis fulfilled his own childhood dream by spearheading a Beatles tribute band called The WannaBeatles. Two decades after Lewis and Lamb Chop last graced television with their presence, Lewis' daughter Mallory and author Nat Segaloff have set the record straight about the iconic pair in Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop: The Team that Changed Children's Television (University of Kentucky Press, 2022). For almost half a century, celebrated ventriloquist and entertainer Shari Lewis delighted generations of children and adults with the help of her trusted sock puppet sidekick Lamb Chop. For decades, the beloved pair were synonymous with children's television, educating and entrancing their young audience with their symbiotic personalities and their proclivity for song, dance, and the joy of silliness. But as iconic as their television personas were, relatively little inside knowledge has been revealed about Lewis herself and the life-changing moments that led her to the entertainment industry and perhaps, most importantly, to Lamb Chop. Renowned for her skills as a performer, Lewis was an equally skilled businesswoman. Operating in an era when women were largely left out of the conversation, she was one of the few women to run her own television production company. Whether it was singing, dancing, conducting, writing, drawing, or ventriloquism-a skill in which she was virtually unmatched-Lewis spent the entirety of her 65 years in pursuit of performative perfection. Constantly innovating and adapting to the needs of her audience and the market, Lewis extended the longevity of her career decade after decade. Her contributions, and that of Lamb Chop, and the rest of her puppet pals forever changed the history of children's television. In this seminal biography, the pair pull the veritable wool from the eyes of audiences who adored the legendary entertainer to examine the joys, sorrows, triumphs, and sheer hard work that gave Lewis and Lamb Chop their enduring star power. The Lights of Zetar was the eighteenth episode of Star Trek's third season to air, with the last remnants of a destroyed civilisation causing difficulties for the Enterprise. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss whether Scotty's behaviour ought to raise more concerns. On the way to the Federation's primary information hub at Memory Alpha, the Enterprise encounters an unusual entity characterised by it's coloured lights. After Lt. Mira Romaine (Jan Shutan) is strongly affected, Kirk tries to investigate but makes little progress thanks to Scotty's interference. It becomes apparent that Romaine's mind is being hijacked by the lifeforms from the light entity and McCoy must implement a radical solution to save her. Later, Kirk and McCoy impress upon Spock the value of Scotty's attention to Romaine's survival. The Lights of Zetar was directed by Herb Kenwith, his only work for the show. The story was by Shari Lewis, with an assist to Jeremy Tarcher. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered agency and its importance. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. It can be viewed on Paramount+ in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.
Accessing Your 'Inner Disrupter'. The hosts for this show are Phyllis Blees and Darlene Boyd. The guest is David Applebaum. David Applebaum did not know what he wanted to be when he grew up. He excelled at art, math, and working with others. David reveals how architecture engaged these creative, technical, and social skills on a lifelong pathway straight to the stars. David details his journey from building tree houses to degrees in architecture to discover his inner “disrupter” so we too can discover ours. He focuses on the creative process at the heart of his calling as an architect. We learn how to live his motto: live where you love and love where you live. David weaves in the alchemy, glamor, and creativity of working with stars like Frank Sinatra, Shari Lewis, Cuba Gooding, and Seth Green who he says “are all very empowering co-creators—some of the most trusting, collaborative creative clients I've had, along with countless stars like you and me.” Although David is rightly acclaimed as an “architect to the stars,” his greatest honor is when a client's house guest says “this house is so you!” The ThinkTech YouTube Playlist for this show is https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQpkwcNJny6koOuEfnRgs0d5aPeLJKJXJ

Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
I am sure some of you remember the closing theme song on the PBS show, Lamb Chop’s Play-Along, hosted by puppeteer, Shari Lewis. It was called “The Song That Never Ends.” Here are the words: “This is a song that never ends, it just goes on and on my friend….” At the end of each episode, the puppets and children would sing several continual verses as the song just keeps repeating and repeating in a loop, while Shari Lewis would try in vain to get them to stop singing. It really is one of those songs that just kept playing over and over inside your head. The Song That Never Ends. Well, today we come to celebrate another song that never ends…the song of joy and of hope, the song of the resurrected Lord. And, this is a song that keeps repeating in our very being, in our individual lives, and among the body of Christ for the rest of our lives. The beginning of the end in Mark’s gospel is very much like the other gospels. It is early on Sunday morning and the women are headed to the tomb while it is still dark. In their grief, they are carrying spices to embalm Jesus’ body because they had not been able to do this when he was wrapped in linen and placed in the tomb. On that horrible Friday afternoon of Jesus’ death, the Sabbath was about to begin, and even anointing a body was forbidden work on the Sabbath. So, the women arrive at the tomb and they are astonished when they discover the massive stone that had blocked the entrance has already been rolled away. And, equally alarming to them, is the stranger they find in the tomb, a man dressed in white, who tells them, “Do not be afraid. Jesus, who was crucified, has been raised. He is not here. Go and tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee…just as he told you.” Well, if the trauma and horror of the past days had not been enough, this stranger now tells them to not be afraid and go back and tell the others Jesus has been raised and will meet them in Galilee! And, it is here where Mark’s gospel, which by the way was the first gospel to be written, is very different from the other gospels. Mark’s last words to us are, “So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.” That’s it folks! That is all we get! That is all Mark gives us. In fact, the risen Jesus never actually makes an appearance in Mark’s gospel. We have a resurrection scene without Jesus that seemingly ends in failure. The women not only fail miserably as they leave in terror, they also say absolutely nothing to anyone! This is quite a cliffhanger to say the least! Now, it is true that most of you will find in your Bibles a few additional verses to Mark’s gospel. However, those additional verses were added a few hundred years later by monks who found Mark’s ending so unsettling and unfinished they had to “fix it.” Yet, the stark reality and truth we face on this Easter morning is that Mark’s gospel, the first gospel written, concludes by deliberately not concluding! Theologian, Tom Long, describes this unfinished-ness so well when he says the writer of Mark’s gospel finishes the story of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, “by dangling something incomplete and unsatisfying before the reader in the final verse….. Not only does this verse fail to provide proper narrative closure, it also lurches to an awkward grammatical stop because a more literal translation of the Greek would actually read, ‘To no one anything they said; afraid they were for...’ That’s it, folks! It is almost as if the author of Mark had suddenly been dragged from his writing desk in midsentence.” Mark’s gospel story ends very abruptly, unfinished, and the risen Jesus never appears. So, why would Mark end his telling of the Jesus story in this manner? What gives? What is going on? Well, Mark was not only a good storyteller, he knew exactly what he was doing. If we look at the opening verse in Mark’s gospel, Mark 1:1, we find these words, “The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” The entire gospel of Mark is only the beginning of the story. Mark uses a cliffhanger to invite us into the story. Mark’s gospel really ends unfinished because the gospel story is always beginning again, anew for every person, in every time and place. This open-ended gospel that threatens to end in failure places us where the women left off. We are invited into the story to go and tell the good news that this person, Jesus of Nazareth, has been raised and is going ahead of us to meet us, just as he promised. And, did you notice where Jesus is going? The man in white tells the women Jesus is going ahead of them to Galilee! That is where they will meet him. Galilee was home, the place where Jesus and the disciples were from, the place where they lived their ordinary day to day lives. This is significant because, as we hear this story, we are told Jesus will meet us in the ordinary places of life, those places where we spend our day to day lives. Joan Mitchell, in her book Beyond Fear and Silence, suggests the three women who left that tomb in terror and silence in Mark’s narrative, bring each of us, the readers and hearers, to our own thresholds of faith, to the limit of words to speak the unspeakable….and to the limit of human experience to trust Who or What is beyond death….the narrative still calls the disciples of each new generation to speak for themselves, and bring the gospel into dialogue with our very lives. (p. 115) Yes, we are called to bring the gospel Good News into dialogue with our own lives. That dialogue happens in the depth of human pain and suffering as we discover the crucified, risen Christ is present to us. That dialogue happens when we find ourselves in the depths of failure, when we fail miserably and discover the crucified, risen Christ is present to us. That dialogue happens in the depth of the pain of this horrible pandemic, as we have discovered the crucified, risen Christ is present to us! In the depth of such pain and despair, in the messiness of our own lives, in those places and times when we just do not know what to do, when we have no words to describe the pain, and when we do not know how to go on, we meet the crucified, risen Christ and we discover hope. Today’s gospel tells us that we meet real hope that is rooted in the love of a very real God who walks with us and meets us in the depth of all the messiness, all the mixed-up-ness, all the joys, all the sorrows and the real “stuff” of our everyday lives. And, the song of the crucified, risen Christ becomes our song because that unending pattern of dying and rising is the story of our lives. We live in a world where we like closure and happy endings. When we read books and see movies, we want closure and happy endings. However, when we finish reading a book with a happy ending, we put it down and simply say, “Great story!” The gospel of Mark, with its unfinished ending, is very different because you cannot put it down, even if you want to. The gospel good news is the never-ending story, the never-ending song! The crucified, risen Christ walks with us as the Jesus story continues to be written in our own lives, and as we joyfully sing out the victorious song that never ends! Today, we celebrate the hope we have been given as a community of Faith, hope rooted in the love of the risen, universal Christ who lives among us! We celebrate the hope of the never-ending story, the song that never ends, the song of the risen Christ who is always, always, always bringing life out of death. We celebrate the hope of the risen Christ who goes before us and is drawing us into a new future, making us ever new! Christ is risen! He
Part II of my conversation with Dena Tauriello and Rosa Avila. We explore more reasons why they were the only two women drummers working on Broadway and off-broadway prior to the shutdown of all shows in 2020. Some of the topics we discuss include:Should broadway have half of the drum chairs be filled by women? If so, why? Is total equality the goal? Are they just not interested, or are there more nefarious reasons for the lack of women playing drums? Is the lack of women drummers working professionally primarily because of sexism and discrimination, or are there other factors?Finding women subs—what problems have they had with recruitment and/or finding qualified candidates? Are women reaching out to them for advice on how to do what they do?What can we do to bring more women into the collective of drummers? Dena Tauriello began playing drums at the age of eight. For 20 years, she worked with NYC rockers Antigone Rising who toured relentlessly, made numerous TV appearances, and served as cultural ambassadors to Israel, Palestine, and Vietnam. She's worked with Rob Thomas (from Matchbox 20) as a member of his “RT Quartet.”She has been featured in Modern Drummer, Drum! and Sticks ‘n' Skins, a photography book about the drumming community. Just over two years ago, Dena made the switch to Broadway after landing the chair for Head Over Heels featuring the music of the Go-Gos. Since then, she has also held the chair for Kristin Chenoweth's For the Girls, Magic Mike and Galileo (reading) and was a sub at The Cher Show. Before the shutdown, she held the chair for the off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors and was set to sub at Six on Broadway. Rosa Avila was born in Germany and spent her childhood in Mexico and Austria. She began playing drums at age 16 and completed her education at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California. When she graduated in 1991, Rosa was presented with the Outstanding Student of the Year award and received the Human Relations Award.Rosa performed with legends like Ann Margret, Debby Boone, The Lennon Sisters, Shari Lewis, Elkie Brooks, Glen Campbell, and Petula Clark. Today's podcast takes up the underlying reasons why there are so few women drummers working on Broadway musicals. I spoke to two amazing drummers, Dena Tauriello and Rosa Avila, to find out why they were the only two women drummers working on Broadway and off-broadway prior to the shutdown of all shows last year. Some of the topics we discuss include:Their thoughts as to why there weren't many female drummers during their formative years.Did they have women drum teachers, and if not, why was that the case?Should broadway have half of the drum chairs be filled by women? If so, why? Is total equality the goal? What about other groups of people? Should there be a proportional representation of other groups? (black, Asian, Latino, gay/lesbian, etc.) Is the lack of women drummers working professionally primarily because of sexism and discrimination, or are there other factors? What are some of the blatant sexist encounters they've experienced over the years and how were they affected?Dena Tauriello began playing drums at the age of eight. In the early 20th century, a puppet fervor slowly crept across the America, like rust on a Chevy Nova, as travelling shows made puppeteers into full fledge celebrities, particularly the self-proclaimed “America's Puppet Master” Tony Sarg who was instrumental in creating visually appealing versions of classic children's tales and bringing to life puppets in live action and animated films. Concurrently, ventriloquism acts were breaking from music halls and vaudeville shows to find superstardom led by duos of Arthur Prince and Sailor Jimmy, the Great Lester and Frank Byron Jr., and, of course, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. America got wood for talking wood. The rise of radio, television, and film provided even broader platforms for puppeteers and ventriloquists to spread their infectious amusements. In a world before special effects, making inanimate objects come alive felt magical and more real than still nascent animation. It was children's television that really embraced puppets as Howdy Doody and Burr Tillstrom's Kukla and Ollie were beamed directly into the impressionable minds of the baby boomers. Lambchop lovin' Shari Lewis, sweater-clad Fred Rogers, and googly eyed Jim Henson all followed suit shortly after making themselves and their creations into international superstars. At about the same nuclear age time frame, you couldn't throw a stone without hitting a socially awkward (and probably sexually frustrated) kid unsuccessfully practicing throwing his voice with a shiny new Emmett Kelly or Mortimer Snerd dummy emulating their heroes like Jimmy Nelson, Bil Baird, and Paul Winchell. They would spend hours listening to instructional records on letter substitutions and tongue positioning. The craze permeated far and wide as even Miss America contestants chose ventriloquism for the talent portion of the show. We even got so lazy that we decided to let robots run our puppets as animatronics started popping up all over place like Disneyland, Showbiz Pizza, and Chuck E Cheese. In this episode, we are going to stare into the cold dead eyes of the dummies. We are going to explore why and how adults mimicking mannerisms into lifeless masses became the preeminent evangelical apparatus. And how things went so far off the rails. So, dim the lights and focus the spotlight. Put on your duck tail tuxedo. Tip your top hat jauntily askew. Straighten your bowtie. Stick your hand up the bottom of your favorite inanimate object and throw your voice as far it goes. Join as we walk through the uncanny valley of the dolls. Just don't let us see your lips move. Just don’t let us see your lips move. Tread Perilously's annual Star Trek month begins with a look at the Original Series episode "The Lights of Zetar." Love blooms on the Enterprise as Scotty finds himself a lass. But will her sensitivity to a phenomenon the ship encounters while en route to Memory Alpha end his rare moment of romance? Also, will Captain Kirk abide not being the center of attention this week? And while we're asking questions, will Lt. Mira Romaine -- Scotty's girlfriend -- get manhandled once she exhibits signs of "space sickness?" Meanwhile, the space phenomenon shows signs of sentience, but its motives are unclear as its speech tends to sound like a mouth full of Pop Rocks. Erik and Justin immediately talk about former Doctor Who Peter Davison. They also debate the merits of Star Trek: Discovery. The Southern California air threatens to strangle them both. A mention of episode co-writer Shari Lewis leads to the nearly forgotten Nickelodeon program Turkey Television; but, somehow, not to Lewis's most famous creation, Lambchop. Captain Kirk turns into a romance writer. Scotty and Kirk's patriarchal attitudes are criticized. Erik decries the need for strict series-to-series continuity. John Harrison gets a namecheck and Justin announces he will write a script requested by Patreon subscribers.

Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
I am sure many of you remember the closing theme song on the PBS show, Lamb Chop’s Play-Along, which was hosted by puppeteer, Shari Lewis. It was “The Song That Doesn’t End.” “This is a song that never ends, it just goes on and on my friends….” At the end of each episode, the puppets and children would sing several continual verses as that song just keeps going on and on, and Shari Lewis would in vain try to stop them. It was one of those songs that just kept repeating inside your head. The Song That Never Ends. Well, today we come to celebrate another song that does not end…the song of joy and of hope, the song of the resurrected Lord. And, this is a song that keeps repeating in our being for the rest of our lives. So, the women arrive at the tomb and are astonished when they discover the massive stone that had blocked the entrance has already been rolled away. However, those additional verses were added a few hundred years later by monks who found Mark’s ending so unsettling and unfinished they had to “fix it.” Yet, the stark reality and truth we face on this Easter morning is that Mark’s gospel concludes by deliberately not concluding! Theologian, Tom Long, describes this unfinished-ness so well when he says the writer of Mark’s gospel finishes the story of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, “by dangling something incomplete and unsatisfying before the reader in the final verse….. Not only does this verse fail to provide proper narrative closure, it also lurches to an awkward grammatical stop because a more literal translation of the Greek would read, ‘To no one anything they said; afraid they were for...’ It is almost as if the author of Mark had suddenly been dragged from his writing desk in midsentence.” Mark’s gospel story ends very abruptly, unfinished, and the risen Jesus never appears. So, why would Mark end his telling of the Jesus story in this manner? What gives? What is going on? Well, Mark not only was a good storyteller, he knew exactly what he was doing. Joan Mitchell, in her book Beyond Fear and Silence, suggests the three women who left that tomb in terror and silence in Mark’s narrative, bring each of us, the readers and hearers, to our own thresholds of faith, to the limit of words to speak the unspeakable….and to the limit of human experience to trust Who or What is beyond death….the narrative still calls the disciples of each new generation to speak for themselves, and bring the gospel into dialogue with our lives. (p. 115) Yes, we are called to bring the gospel into dialogue with our lives. That dialogue happens in the depth of human pain and suffering as we discover the crucified, risen Christ is present to us. That dialogue happens when we find ourselves in the depths of failure, when we fail miserably and discover the crucified, risen Christ is present to us. In the depth of such pain and despair, in the messiness of our own lives, we meet the crucified, risen Christ and we discover hope. The gospel good news is the never-ending story! The crucified, risen Christ walks with us as the Jesus story continues to be written in our own lives, and we joyfully sing out the victorious song that never ends! Today, we celebrate the hope we have been given as a community of Faith, hope rooted in the love of the risen Christ who lives among us! We celebrate the hope of the never-ending story, the song that never ends, the song of the risen Christ who is always, always bringing life out of death. We celebrate the hope of the risen Christ who goes before us and is drawing us into a new future, making us ever new! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

In 1937, Americans began a Sunday night ritual that lasted three decades. They tuned in to the Bergen and McCarthy show. It was the top program on radio and Hollywood's top movie stars lined up to make cameos. They included Mae West, whose flirtations with McCarthy got her banned from NBC for 15 years, and Marilyn Monroe, who once became "engaged" to marry McCarthy -- a stunt that ended when the dummy couldn't submit to a blood test. The arrival of television produced a new set of star ventriloquists, including Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney, and Senor Wences and Pedro, the famous head-in-the-box who's favorite phrase was "S'awright!" But none was as enduring as Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop, who debuted in 1957 on the Captain Kangaroo Show. Lewis went on to star in several children's TV shows in a career that spanned five decades, until her death in 1998. Asbury says she was more than just the best female ventriloquist -- she may have been the best ventriloquist ever because of "boundless talent and energy" and her ability to change with the times.
