Vicky Tsai, founder of Japanese beauty brand Tatcha, had a nontraditional path to eventually founding one of the top skincare companies today. About 10 years ago, Vicky decided to leave her thriving career and travel the world in search of happiness and meaning in her life. In her travels, when visiting Kyoto, Japan, Vicky had a life-changing meeting with a Geisha. She learned some of their natural skincare secrets which healed her skin & soul in the truest sense and she wanted to bring the same experience back with her to the US. However, Vicky's success did not come easy. She struggled for years to get the brand off the ground and was over $600,000 in debt at the time. When she started the company, there weren't many direct-to-consumer brands, Asian beauty and skincare wasn't a thing and no one was interested in clean formulas for their skin. Fast forward to today, Tatcha is available in Sephora & QVC and is the second fastest growing women-led company on the Inc 5000 list. And last year, Unilever acquired Tatcha for a reported $500 million dollars. Vicky is passionate about giving back. Since inception, they have partnered with Room to Read in their mission to educate girls globally and have sponsored over 3 million days of school. In this episode, we'll talk to Vicky about: * How 9/11 impacted Vicky's perspective on life's meaning and purpose [4:26]* Vicky shares how she used business school to do introspective work on herself [6:54]* Vicky discusses her career trajectory and why Howard Shultz, CEO of Starbucks, played a big role in her leaving her corporate career [11:23]* Vicky shares how she thinks about social entrepreneurship and using business as a vehicle for social change [16:18]* Vicky describes why Kyoto, Japan made such a big impact in her life & truly healed her from the inside out [18:28]* How Vicky thinks about money, risk & success and key tips she shares with entrepreneurs when starting a business [20:54]* How Vicky sold her engagement ring to buy 10,000 blotting papers and bring Tatcha to life [24:58]* Why Vicky decided to not raise money from investors early-on & the personal sacrifices she made to keep the business afloat [27:20]* What Tatcha looked like in the early days and how she eventually got the product in Sephora & QVC [34:11]* Vicky shares her advice on raising money with institutional investors [45:03]* Vicky describes how she felt when stepping down as CEO and the immense growth the Company saw when she stopped caring about what others think [46:14]* Vicky shares what it was like to sell her company for $500 million dollars and the legacy she wants to leave behind [53:46]Follow Tatcha:* Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tatcha * Website: https://www.tatcha.com/Follow Yasmin:* Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yasminknouri/* Stay updated & subscribe to our newsletter: https://www.behindherempire.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
What you will learn from this episode: How to create a significant movement even when you feel like all the odds are against you. Find out how you can empower others to join you with collaborative action that champions a cause beyond yourself. Learn to stand your ground even when others try to dissuade you from making things happen. It's easy to go along with the flow and ultimately give up when faced with seemingly insurmountable circumstances. Taking a stand on an issue or standing up against "a giant" is never easy. There will be moments of doubt and maybe fear. Even with the best intentions, others may dampen your spirits and try to dissuade you from pushing through. But when you fight for something beyond yourself and honestly believe you can create a significant difference in the lives of others, then you must find a way to champion the cause. Even amidst the threat of imprisonment, Vicky Martin remains steadfast in her desire for change. She has started a bit of a revolution against social media in a campaign that would change the lives of cancer survivors and fellow beauty artists. In this episode, she shares all of the behind-the-scenes of how it got started, as well as the organization of the community, and right down to the planning the media coverage. "I had to shut off, to be honest, because I think you have to be careful when you have something that's a little bit outside of the box because the people that you talk to about it will try to talk you out of it. And then you have not fulfilled your calling." - Vicky Martin Topics Covered: 02:19 - The backstory of championing a cause 05:24 - How Vicky resisted the negative input from others 07:05 - The extra steps to create a visual impact 10:01 - The core mission of 'The World Medical Artists' 14:38 - What this campaign is all about 15:45 - Who this movement will help 16:39 - Details on how you can participate 18:13 - Other ways you can support a great cause 23:19 - Final thoughts Key Takeaways: "I say this all the time; the nipples are the areas of medals from the war. And those medals need to be beautiful; they deserve them to be perfect. And that's what I want to create is a safe place for people to go to that not only will it help artists be found, but also help women trust the world medical artists, that it's a good standard." - Vicky Martin "We have such a beautiful group of strong people that we're all in it together. Honestly, we're all moving along. And every little detail has been thought of. We've created a press release. We've created what you write on the email so that you can send it to your local radio, to everything else. Just make the world know that we have a voice and we will be heard." - Vicky Martin "It's just so nice when you just stand up for yourself and in a very classy sophisticated way." - Vicky Martin Connect with April Meese: aprilmeese.com Email: support@aprilmeese.com LinkedIn Instagram Facebook

Vicky Zelen - Zelen Risk Solutions In this episode, Vicky Zelen of Zelen Risk Solutions is here. She is an expert at writing property and causality insurance. Zelen Risk Solutions will analyze your business and hand-select the very best coverage for the very best rate. As your independent insurance agent, they will service your account with a personal touch most insurance agencies are either unable or unwilling to provide. Whether you need business or personal insurance in Jacksonville, Florida, they have you covered! Keep hurricane season in mind. A homeowner should have flood insurance, even if you are not in a flood zone. Of course, you want to have homeowner insurance. When a hurricane is en route to your area, insurance companies shut down, and you will not be able to add any type of coverage to your plan. Call your agent now, review your insurance coverage, and look at your hurricane deductible. More and more insurance companies are adding flood onto homeowner insurance; you will have only one deductible and it will all be on one policy. If you want to get flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program, there is a thirty-day waiting period. Some items that may not be included with your insurance is getting a hotel when you need to evacuate, food spoilage, and falling trees. The insurance company will not pay to have those trees cut or moved at all. Also, insurance companies do not hold you responsible if a tree on your yard falls and damages your neighbor’s home. If you want to, you can cut your tree at your property line and only handle the part that is on your property. A massive misunderstanding about insurance is the water damage clause. Any rising water is considered a flood. It can be a retention pond that rises and damages your property. If a pipe bursts in the home, it is considered water damage coverage. Some people have it with their insurance, and others do not. In addition, if a contractor is in your home and you get injured, or there is damage, make sure you have their general liability insurance. Do not ever sign an “Assignment of Benefits” from a contractor. It means you are signing over your rights as a homeowner to the contractor. The last piece of advice Vicky wants us to know is the most essential coverage you can buy is uninsured motorist coverage. A lot of people in the state of Florida are hitting and running. If anyone gets hurt in a hit-and-run, your uninsured motorist coverage will cover your family. Enjoy the show! IN THIS EPISODE: [01:00] How Vicky started her career in high school [02:20] Hurricane season – what type of insurance do you need? [04:50] Who is responsible when a tree falls in your yard?
