Daniel is a world-renowned makeup artist and Global Director of Artistry and Education at Tatcha. He is also one of the kindest human beings you will ever meet. He is the definition of multi-cultural, with a French-English-American father and a Vietnamese mother and having grown up in Central America and Seoul. Daniel shares with us the evolution of his career, which is rooted in such respect for those who have helped him on his path. He is an example of finding success without the hyper individualism that America tends to emphasize. In addition to talking, of course, about makeup and skincare, we talk about the reality of this moment of global reckoning — the hard truths we need to face as well as the evolutions that deserve to be recognized and celebrated. This conversation is a much-needed reminder of what matters most in life: knowing who we are, honoring cultures, and thinking beyond ourselves. Please enjoy — the truly lovely Daniel Martin. @danielmartin @leahsoojinkim
Vicky Tsai founded her skincare company, Tatcha, with the goal of helping heal people's skin and soul. But while Vicky's a major player in the beauty space now, it took years of trial and error to find work that matched her values. She first began her career on Wall Street as a derivatives trader at Merrill Lynch in New York City, but after witnessing 9/11 firsthand, she left her job to attend Harvard Business School for a fresh start. She interned at SK-II, then took a job at Starbucks in China, and later joined a tech startup focused on sustainability. Even with a successful career, Vicky still struggled to find her purpose, while simultaneously dealing with acute dermatitis on her skin. Then, 10 years into her corporate position, she decided to choose her own happiness. With no plan and a mountain of debt, she quit her job and began traveling. While visiting Kyoto, she learned about the beauty practices of geisha, and soon afterward, her skin was healed. She knew she had to find a way to bring her learnings to the masses, and with the help of geisha and cultural advisors, Tatcha was born.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It was a trip to Kyoto in 2008 that led Vicky Tsai, Founder of Tatcha, to create a skincare brand based on Japanese beauty rituals. Vicky became so inspired by the beauty secrets and rituals of Japanese culture that she saw firsthand and how this was healing her dermatitis, so she left her job and started creating. Even selling her engagement ring to fund the launch. In 2009, she introduced the consumer to a completely different way to think about beauty, inside and out. Her journey developing Tatcha, scaling it, stepping down as CEO then coming back as CEO with Unilever, the company that acquired Tatcha is fascinating, authentic, insightful and I know that you will be glad you listened. Earned: Strategies and Success Stories From the Best in Beauty + Fashion
In Ep. 33 of Earned, Conor sits down with Adeline Leong, CMO of fast-growing clean makeup brand Kosas. We start the episode by exploring Adeline's own professional journey, and learn why she decided to pursue a career in the beauty industry. We then dive into the differences between working at large, established companies and smaller, up-and-coming brands, and Adeline shares advice for how young brands can best position themselves for sustainable growth. We learn why Adeline is a “huge believer” in product sampling, before she explains the origins (and results!) of Kosas' innovative, new “Tryouts” sampling program. Next, we switch gears to recruiting, and discuss Adeline's strategies for bringing in fresh talent, before she shouts out the beauty industry leaders from whom she's learned the most. Finally, we close the show by unpacking Adeline's organic and authentic approach to influencer marketing—a philosophy that spelled stand-out success first for Tatcha, and now for Kosas. Welcome to Bri Books! Today I'm sharing with you the best new products at Sephora--this summer's best new Sephora launches that are worth your time, energy, and coin. My intention is to inspire your fall beauty routine, so I'm breaking it down into the best skin care products at Sephora, the best makeup products at Sephora, and the best new body care products at Sephora. I've included links to all the products in the show notes and on bribookspod.com! 1:55: #1: Augustinus Bader Rich Cream: Originally released in 2018, the Rich Cream quickly attained unprecedented status among the skincare elite. I was able to review The Cream as part of a beauty story for Glamour.com. After that experience, I got the hype! For the 2021 update, Prof. Bader and his researchers returned to the lab to create a new version that focuses on cellular renewal. Since I've been using the original The Cream for a year, after trying out the updated formulation, I did notice a visible reduction in the pollution and clogged pores I had. I love to use The Cream as the highlight of my nighttime routine. It includes TFC8, which is known to reduce hyperpigmentation in the skin. The Rich Cream with TFC8 retails at $170 at Sephora, and you can pick up a half ounce bottle for $85 at Sephora. 4:45 #2: Saint Jane Hydrating Petal Cream: I've been quietly obsessing over Saint Jane all summer and spring, and the brand has finally launched in Sephora! The Hydrating Petal Cream is an all-day moisturizer with hibiscus peptides and floral essences (a cottagecore skincare dream) including antioxidant-rich magnolia and honeysuckle. Inspired by how flower petals maintain luxurious hydration, the Saint Jane founder developed this incredible product that helps to reduce stress in the skin. The best part? It doubles as a post-sun treatment with soothing active ingredients that calm sun-sensitive skin. Saint Jane Hydrating Petal Cream is $68 at Sephora. 8:00: #3: Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair Serum in Cream Treatment: Another new to Sephora launch, this Tatcha treatment began as a personal formulation request from Vicky Tsai, founder of Tatcha, who dealt with eczema and flare-ups over the last year and wanted to create something to soothe her own skin. If you're dealing with regular skin inflammation, the Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair Serum is for you. I love how this product rebalances my skin at night and helps it regenerate itself while I sleep. After a long night (or early morning), I reach for this treatment to get rid of any irritation. It exceeded my expectations, and I think it's a great pick for acne-prone skin. The Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair Serum in Cream Treatment is available for $88 at Sephora. 10:30: Quick Break 10:50: #4: Ole Henriksen Cold Plunge Mask: This clay-based skin mask is great for combating oily skin in the summer months. It delivers a chill and purifies the skin, similar in effect to the Nordic cold cleanse tradition of jumping into chilly water. It's perfect for skincare Sundays and hot summer days alike. Here's a link to an Instagram Reels I created all about the Ole Henriksen Cold Plunge mask, which is available at Sephora for $38. 13:30: #5: Ole Henriksen Dewtopia 20% Night Acid: Packed with lemon enzyme, aloe juice, AHAs and PHAs, this night acid is the perfect one-and-done acid product for your skincare routine. It just launched in Sephora on July 26, inspired by Ole Henriksen's spa heritage. This product feels custard-like, the lemony sugar scent is divine at the end of a long day. Dewtopia is the perfect balance of exfoliating and nourishing components. Ole Henriksen Dewtopia 20% Night Acid is available at Sephora for $55. 16:30: #6: Algenist Blue Algae Vitamin C Dark Spot Correcting Peel: This epic vitamin C-based peel is formulated with spirulina, a blue-green algae known for its antioxidant properties. I use it as a resurfacing peel to help reduce hyperpigmentation and was blown away at how gentle this peel is. If the words ‘peel', ‘correcting,' and ‘brightening' conjure up thoughts of burning skin, fear not, this is by far the most gentle, non-irritating peel I've ever used. There's a tingle--so you know it's working--but it quickly vanishes. Pro tip: Pick up Algenist's Vitamin C Brightening Serum for double protection. When used together, I saw results within a week, and members of my family who also tested the product reported noticing a more even complexion and skin texture after a week of regular use. Algenist Blue Algae Vitamin C Dark Spot Correcting Peel is available at Sephora for $85, and the Algenist Blue Algae Vitamin C Serum is $72. Let me know what your skincare routine looks like at @bribookspod on Instagram and Twitter, and by using #bribooks while you listen! Vicky Tsai, founder of Japanese beauty brand Tatcha, had a nontraditional path to eventually founding one of the top skincare companies today. About 10 years ago, Vicky decided to leave her thriving career and travel the world in search of happiness and meaning in her life. In her travels, when visiting Kyoto, Japan, Vicky had a life-changing meeting with a Geisha. She learned some of their natural skincare secrets which healed her skin & soul in the truest sense and she wanted to bring the same experience back with her to the US. However, Vicky's success did not come easy. She struggled for years to get the brand off the ground and was over $600,000 in debt at the time. When she started the company, there weren't many direct-to-consumer brands, Asian beauty and skincare wasn't a thing and no one was interested in clean formulas for their skin. Fast forward to today, Tatcha is available in Sephora & QVC and is the second fastest growing women-led company on the Inc 5000 list. And last year, Unilever acquired Tatcha for a reported $500 million dollars. Vicky is passionate about giving back. Since inception, they have partnered with Room to Read in their mission to educate girls globally and have sponsored over 3 million days of school. In this episode, we'll talk to Vicky about: * How 9/11 impacted Vicky's perspective on life's meaning and purpose [4:26]* Vicky shares how she used business school to do introspective work on herself [6:54]* Vicky discusses her career trajectory and why Howard Shultz, CEO of Starbucks, played a big role in her leaving her corporate career [11:23]* Vicky shares how she thinks about social entrepreneurship and using business as a vehicle for social change [16:18]* Vicky describes why Kyoto, Japan made such a big impact in her life & truly healed her from the inside out [18:28]* How Vicky thinks about money, risk & success and key tips she shares with entrepreneurs when starting a business [20:54]* How Vicky sold her engagement ring to buy 10,000 blotting papers and bring Tatcha to life [24:58]* Why Vicky decided to not raise money from investors early-on & the personal sacrifices she made to keep the business afloat [27:20]* What Tatcha looked like in the early days and how she eventually got the product in Sephora & QVC [34:11]* Vicky shares her advice on raising money with institutional investors [45:03]* Vicky describes how she felt when stepping down as CEO and the immense growth the Company saw when she stopped caring about what others think [46:14]* Vicky shares what it was like to sell her company for $500 million dollars and the legacy she wants to leave behind [53:46]Follow Tatcha:* Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tatcha * Website: https://www.tatcha.com/Follow Yasmin:* Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yasminknouri/* Stay updated & subscribe to our newsletter: https://www.behindherempire.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
