We're through 2025's commencement address season. I don't mind lofty ideals and encouraging words but isn't a dose of realism also needed? And that's where I come in. My first attempts at Life Coaching might be in this unsolicited commencement address to our nation's grads as heard in my weekly feature Vague But True on the the Bob and Tom Show in 2005. 20 years later, was I right? On tattoos I'll admit I was probably wrong.

The AI Wild West just got wilder — and we're riding straight into the melee. In this episode, Brian Balfour, Fareed Mosavat, and special guest Aaron White crack open the three questions every builder is secretly sweating right now: Can you actually differentiate when every launch feels like a land-grab? Is “move fast” still an edge — or just table-stakes? What happens when OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic hoover up all the context you thought was your moat? Expect hot takes on speed-as-a-moat, why Apple's “slow and perfect” playbook suddenly looks brittle, and how vertical-niche founders can still carve out 10-to-100× markets hiding in plain sight. You'll hear: The Great Land Grab – Why OpenAI's next platform move could dwarf Facebook's 2007 dev-platform blitz. Speed vs. Strategy – If “move fast” is merely table stakes, what actually sets winning teams apart? Moats in 2025 – From data loops to brand trust, which defenses still work—and which are illusions? Niche Power Plays – How vertical micro-SaaS and “taste-driven” products can survive the AI tidal wave. The Dark & Bright Futures – Privacy nightmares, device wars, and the unexpected upside for founders who master context. If you're building, investing, or just trying to keep your head above the AI tidal wave, hit play. This convo will arm you with the mindset (and the memes) you need to survive the quicksand and still grab the crown. Strap in—let's ride.
Does everyone come to you when there's a problem because you're known for giving the best advice or being good in a crisis? Do you intervene in family members' situations before they even ask for help? Do you feel anxious or guilty when others struggle? Do you rush to smooth things over? Or do you subconsciously look for people to save? The broken-winged birds? These are all signs you might have a savior complex. If you're exhausted from playing this role, you're in the right place. I'll walk you through how to become an authentic supporter rather than a savior, the differences between the two, and share a few reasons why some of us naturally fall into the role of savior. Last week we talked about Everyone-versus-Everyone. That hasn't stopped. Before we could edit and publish the last episode, Google unleashed a “do-everything” AI bundle. Last week we talked about when everyone ships everything at once, how do you find the whitespace? This week we continue to discuss two more tectonic shifts: 1. The Great SEO Trade-Off ➜ The AI Answer Engine - Google's new AI-mode could nuke the blue-link economy that's powered the internet for 20+ years. If LLMs hoard the traffic, who keeps creating the content they need to stay smart? Expect hot takes on long-tail extinction, “answer-engine optimization,” and whether originality still pays. 2. Hiring Hangover Meets AI Reality - New-grad recruiting is down 50 %, senior talent is grumbling, and managers admit they'd rather spin up an LLM than onboard Gen Z. Brian and Fareed unpack why the entry-level pipeline collapsed, where the arbitrage is hiding, and how startups can weaponize AI-native rookies before incumbents wake up. We add a dash of labor-economics humor, a sprinkle of Shopify-meets-Stack-Overflow, and you've got an episode that will leave you rethinking your product, growth, and hiring strategy all at the same time.

In the last 30 days, Notion fired off three products, Figma morphed into a mini-Adobe, OpenAI gobbled Windsurf, and Loom, Atlassian, Anthropic, Cursor, and Granola pointed their AI cannons straight at one another. Sox fans! Our Chicago White Sox were embarrassed this past weekend by the Chicago Cubs. When will the pain stop? When will the Sox be competitive again? It's a sickening feeling to realize the good times might be very far away. We are hanging onto prospects, hope and the feeling that it can't be this way forever. There are silver linings... not many... but they are there. Jonathan Cannon has had a nice month of May and Miguel Vargas was tough to stop on the North Side. Little sizzle and no steak. Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson are reinstated? When, if ever, will they be inducted into the Hall of Fame? Thank you for the continued support. Go Sox. #WhiteSox

The “AI memo” craze is officially here—and it's more than executive theater. In this episode, Brian Balfour and Fareed Mosavat break down how leading CEOs (Shopify, Duolingo, Box, Meta) are using public AI manifestos to jolt their companies into a faster, smarter future—and what product leaders must do next to turn those words into shipping velocity. What we cover: - The 5-Layer AI Memo Framework—ownership, expectations, directives, accountability, constraints—so your decree actually drives behavior. - Experiment → Learn → Share Loops that turn scattered tinkering into org-wide best practices. - Concrete “forcing-function” constraints (team-size caps, prototype-only reviews, head-count ceilings) that accelerate adoption. - Why value creation beats cost cutting—and how to put AI on the roadmap, not just the balance sheet. - Meta's new AI app: a real-time case study on distribution, context, and the missing zero-to-one spark. - Cultural fault lines—leaders, followers, laggards—and playbooks for bringing the middle 80 % over the line (before performance reviews do it for you). Whether you're drafting your own AI memo or figuring out how to implement the one that just landed in your inbox, this conversation delivers the practical moves to convert manifesto hype into measurable product momentum.

Have you ever opened your inbox expecting junk—but found encouragement instead? Not a promo. Not a pitch. Just a few kind words from someone who saw you… and said so. That happened to me recently. And it reminded me just how powerful unsolicited encouragement can be—especially for creatives who carry so much behind the scenes. What This Episode Will Remind You: ✘ Encouragement doesn't need an invitation. The best words often come when you're not asking for them. When they do, they shine like light in the dark. ✘ Not everything that's unsolicited is unhelpful. There's a difference between noise and nudges. Unsolicited encouragement carries quiet clarity. ✘ Your presence matters more than your performance. In creative work, we feel pressure to earn affirmation. But grace doesn't work that way. It sees you—not just your output. ✘ You may have already been this kind of grace to someone else. A passing comment. A text. A kind post. Don't underestimate what your voice can do. “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” — Proverbs 16:24 Welcome to The Artisan's Edge—a new miniseries from The Curated Craftsmen™ Podcast designed to give craftsmen and artisans a quick edge up in their creative business. In this episode, the artist collective Small Audio Art founded by Phoebe McIndoe invites us to contemplate the possibilities of windows… Interview with Phoebe McIndoe Are you creatively stuck, a worried novice audio-maker, or just feeling a little lonely? Don’t worry, Phoebe McIndoe feels you. Establishing Small Audio Art—a 6-month playful, low-stakes project inviting creators to craft stories inspired by everyday objects—the Berlin-based journalist and radio maker welcomes you into her little paradise of quirkiness, randomness, and heaps of laughter. (Shhh… there’s also a listening party with party poppers after each submission round). Next prompt: “clocks” (or any timekeeping device). Submissions can be up to 10 minutes, in MP3 format. Photos or poems welcomed. Jump on the bandwagon. Let your story chime in. Matters of Windows by Jane Lee and Dan Semo In our first story, a reflective monologue on the passage of time, missed opportunities and life choices. “We rush through life pretending we have all the time in the world, but the window is always getting smaller.” Soggy Window by Martin Zaltz Austwick Next up, Martin makes a song out of the squeegee. Time to wipe your windows. Lumi by Andrea Kristinsdottir In our third story, Andrea leaves a window open - and someone escapes. A wholesome search for a cheeky little thing. Meow. The Window by Danni Stewart Through our final window... A ‘part-time’ shirtless guy. Unsolicited flowers. Her window and his window. “The next time I looked at the window, everything was gone.” “I never even spoke to him. So why do I miss him? I don't know.” Thank you to Phoebe McIndoe and all of the audio artists who shared their stories. Robert Kelly and Paul Virzi dive into the daily annoyances that grind their gears, from people hogging mobile order pickup counters to absurd movie continuity errors (seriously, where do those blood oath scars go?). The guys also debate the quirks of air travel, share fan-submitted bones to pick, take on the unsolicited medical advice epidemic and including a rant about animated pets driving cars—this episode is packed with comedy gold. Don't miss it! Subscribe, hit the like button, and send us your own bones to pick at patreon.com/bonetopickcast Bones addressed: People who don't move when the train reaches the final stop The ridiculousness of blood oaths in movies and lack of continuity Pets driving cars in animated movies being too unrealistic People hovering around mobile order pickup areas and grabbing the wrong items Unsolicited medical advice from people with no expertise, especially for migraines Shoes left near stairs instead of being put away properly The frustration of unnecessary YouTube censorship and algorithms hiding certain content Annoying train etiquette and entitled passengers The way some people handle their coffee orders in public The absurdity of small daily annoyances that build up over time

Sara Stanizai offers practical advice on how to be there for them without overstepping, focusing on empathy, asking rather than assuming, and making thoughtful, specific suggestions when appropriate. By taking on the role of a supportive co-pilot rather than a rescuer, you can help your loved ones navigate their struggles while empowering them to take the next steps on their own terms. In this episode, Brian and Fareed discuss the challenges facing product managers in the AI era with Shaun Clowes, CPO at Confluent. Many product professionals are questioning their future as traditional PM workflows—documentation, basic prioritization, and coordination—become increasingly automated. Yet this technological shift isn't eliminating the product management function; rather, it's elevating what has always differentiated exceptional PMs from average ones. While low-value processes are being automated away, the core elements that create product success—strategic vision, judgment, taste, and leadership—are becoming dramatically more valuable.

Something that seems to be prevalent now, more than EVER in our society, is receiving unsolicited comments about our bodies.Today's episode is actually inspired by a recent message I received from a listener, all about THIS topic. I've dealt with it on my own journey, and even if you haven't, I bet you know someone who has!For some reason, people feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions on other people's bodies (typically, women are the ones getting this feedback). This is happening super frequently online with social media, but it happens in person too (i.e. women working out in the gym). I'm not sure where people have gotten the audacity to do this, but it is NOT okay to put other people's bodies down. Words DO matter, and they have consequences. We really need to get back to the concept of ‘thinking before we speak' (or type online) - not everything should be spoken out loud!If you've experienced this, I want to urge you to protect your peace, however that looks for you. You are ENOUGH already, and if you need support to keep kicking ass on your fitness journey, I'm here for you! In this episode, we cover:Why people are feeling more comfortable than EVER to comment on other people's bodiesThe audacity that people have, thinking it's okay to say the things that they sayNormalizing the concept of ‘thinking before you speak'How to protect yourself when someone gives their unsolicited opinion on your bodyLinks/Resources:Ep. 150 | Empowering Women in Fitness: Breaking Stereotypes, Embracing Authenticity and Building Strength + ConfidenceEp. 116 | Social Gatherings Without Guilt: Tackling Food and Drink Pressure from OthersJoin FIT CLUB, my monthly membership with workouts you can do at home or the gymPRIVATE COACHING is my 1:1 program (choose 3 or 6 month option)Connect with me on Instagram @kristycastillofit and @unfuckyourfitnesspodcast so we can keep this conversation going-be sure to tag me in your posts and stories!Join my FREE Facebook group, Unf*ck Your FitnessClick HERE for my favorite fitness & life things!Send me a text with episode ideas or just to say hi!
