There is a very loud version of entrepreneurship online right now: quit the job, burn the safety net, go all in, and figure it out later. I get the appeal. I also think that advice can get expensive very quickly, especially when the business has not been validated yet. Mike Shannon joins me to talk about the much messier, smarter side of starting a business. Mike has built multiple companies, appeared on Shark Tank, worked in AI, and wrote Sweaty Equity, a book about the unglamorous middle of entrepreneurship. His story is not the polished founder myth. It is Shark Tank one day, Chicago Bulls laundry room the next, then years of pivots, investor pressure, customer discovery, and learning how to actually build something that works. If you are a corporate professional, side hustler, first-time founder, or future entrepreneur wondering whether you should quit your job to start a business, this conversation is your reality check. We talk about why keeping your day job can create runway, why "build the thing, sell the thing" matters more than startup hype, and how to use messy action without blowing up your career stability. Inside this episode • Why quitting your job too early can create unnecessary founder pressure • How Mike Shannon went from Shark Tank with Mark Cuban to the Chicago Bulls laundry room • Why business validation matters more than investor validation • The simple startup framework: build the thing, sell the thing • How customer discovery helps you avoid forcing the wrong idea into the market • What Sweaty Equity reveals about the messy middle of entrepreneurship What's one "corporate game" rule you've learned the hard way?

What happens after you leave a six-figure corporate leadership role? For many executives, the decision to step away from corporate America is framed as a pursuit of freedom, flexibility, and autonomy. Yet the deeper reality is rarely discussed. Leaving a high-paying job is not just a financial decision—it is an identity shift. In this episode of Don't Waste the Chaos, host Kerri Roberts reflects on the psychological and professional transition that comes with walking away from corporate leadership to build a consulting business. After spending two decades inside corporate structures—including roles earning more than $250,000 annually—Kerri made the decision to step out and launch her own firm. While the external change appeared straightforward, the internal shift was far more complex.Corporate leadership creates a powerful framework of validation. Titles, compensation, team size, and performance metrics become the scoreboard of success. When that framework disappears, many high-capacity leaders discover that they are not just leaving a job—they are leaving the structure that reinforced who they believed themselves to be. Drawing from her first three years as an entrepreneur, Kerri explores the fears many leaders experience during this transition, including financial uncertainty, questions about value outside corporate structures, and the challenge of rebuilding identity without traditional career markers. She also shares the unexpected gifts that emerge through the process: mental spaciousness, creative ownership, and a deeper understanding of purpose and faith. Entrepreneurship, she explains, often exposes the internal systems leaders built during their corporate careers. Many founders unknowingly recreate the same pressure patterns they once carried inside corporate environments. But when approached intentionally, the transition from corporate leadership to entrepreneurship can become something far more meaningful than a career change. It becomes a reinvention. For leaders standing in the space between who they were in corporate and who they are becoming now, this episode offers a grounded reflection on the realities of stepping away from certainty and building something new.Key TakeawaysLeaving corporate is not just a career move.Corporate structures quietly shape how leaders measure their worth.Entrepreneurship removes certainty before it replaces it.Many founders unknowingly recreate corporate pressure inside their businesses.Reinvention requires time.About the PodcastDon't Waste the Chaos explores leadership, organizational complexity, and the personal transformation that often accompanies executive responsibility. I've never walked a traditional path. My brief time in the corporate world felt like a layover, something I did out of financial need and the desire for stability. Maybe even my late attempt at “adulthood.” But it became clear pretty quickly that this life wasn't meant for me.Even though uncertainty terrifies me and I have my own anxieties about the future, I decided to take the leap: leaving corporate, betting on myself, and returning to the path of being a content creator while building my own business. This is an honest reflection on what that transition is really like, the excitement and the stress, the hope and the doubt, and the reality behind starting a new chapter, a new venture, and a new version of your life.If you're navigating a career change, thinking about quitting your job, or exploring entrepreneurship, I hope this helps you feel less alone.

If I am you, and I have a job working for someone else, I'd start moving plan B to plan A right now. Build something that only you can do. That's your Tilt. Communicate that Tilt out in a regular way. Start building even a handful of followers. At some point, you'll be able to make a living off of that. If you want to build IP for someone else, go do that…but why? Why not build something that leads to complete and total freedom. We talk about freedom in this country, but most of us don't actually have it for many reasons. What's your reason? Could it be self inflicted? ------- Like this episode?
