Tod Lending #OnTheSofaWithVictoria. A special featuring THE UMBRELLA MAKER'S SON, the Holocaust, interior character, documentary film and storytelling.THE UMBRELLA MAKER'S SON: Born to a secure, middle-class Polish Jewish family, seventeen-year-old Reuven works alongside his father, an artisan businessman whose shop creates the finest handmade umbrellas in Poland. But the family's peaceful life shatters when the Nazis invade their homeland, igniting World War II. With terrifying brutality, the Nazis confiscate their business, evict them from their home, and strip away their rights, threatening the lives of the city's Jewish population, including Reuven and Zelda, the girl he loves. Shortly after the Nazi occupation, Zelda and her family disappear, and Reuven and his father are forced into backbreaking physical labor that nearly kills them. For the young man and his family, the only chance to survive is escape--and some of them will die trying. Fleeing a Nazi ambush through the surrounding forest, shot and wounded, Reuven is found by a local farmer who has never met a Jew--and agrees to help because he needs the boy to work the farm with him. The farmer's wife, however, is not as kind. Her betrayal forces a desperate Reuven to escape. He embarks on a perilous journey through the Polish countryside, determined to reach the Kraków ghetto where he hopes to reunite with Zelda, whose life has also been forever changed by the horrors of occupation and war. A love story and a story of family, The Umbrella Maker's Son is a riveting, heartfelt, and beautiful tale of survival and unexpected hope in the face of terror and violence. A chronicle of triumph, it joins the ranks of The Tattooist of Auschwitz and other memorable works of modern Holocaust literature.Tod Lending is an Academy Award-nominated and national Emmy-winning producer, director, writer, and cinematographer. His work has aired nationally on ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and HBO; has been screened theatrically and received awards at national and international festivals, including the Sundance Film Fest.; and has been televised internationally in Europe and Asia. Monday Jan. 27 was a busy day for Canadian politicians pledging to remember the Holocaust, fight antisemitism, and, in some cases, stand by the embattled State of Israel. The historic day—80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz—also provided a convenient ramp for some early campaign pledges as the country heads into a federal election later this year. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made one of his final international visits, to Poland to visit Auschwitz and attend the official commemoration ceremony, where he spoke with two Canadian survivors of that infamous death camp. Back in Canada, his minister of addictions and mental health, Ya'ara Saks, visited the Toronto Holocaust Museum to explain how $3.4 million federal dollars will go toward six organizations to combat Holocaust denial and antisemitism while a million more goes to UNESCO; in Ottawa, his minister of official languages, Rachel Bendayan, revealed the date of the forthcoming second national summit on antisemitism while speaking at Canada's official national Holocaust monument. At the same event, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre attacked the Liberal record on protecting Canadian Jews and standing up for Israel. On this episode of The CJN Daily, you'll hear all these voices and more—including Canadian survivors Howard Chandler and Miriam Ziegler, and U of T law student Pe'er Krut, who had a front row seat in Poland—part of a sweeping glance at what the monumental day sounded like across Canada and beyond. Daniel Pelton hadn't felt much of a musical connection to his Jewish heritage before Oct. 7. But after reality changed for Jews around the world—including his hometown of Calgary—Pelton decided to learn more about both the Holocaust and its artistic representations. He read The Tattooist of Auschwitz, which inspired him to adapt the tattoo numbers used in the book—34902-32407—into musical notes, using their 12-tone counterparts. The result evolved into a 11-minute epic, which Pelton supplemented with two other tracks to create a new trio of songs, released on Jan. 27 for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. To record the three works, Pelton teamed up with Calgary's National Music Centre and successfully applied for a grant to record with the "Violins of Hope", authentic violins once owned by Holocaust victims and survivors. Hear all the three works and learn how he embarked on this journey on this week's episode of Culturally Jewish, The CJN's podcast spotlighting Canadian Jewish artists. It's that time of year when Walter Afanasieff takes over the charts. Walter is the writer and producer of “All I Want for Christmas Is You”—the biggest Christmas song of all time—and he also produced “My Heart Will Go On.” But that's just the tip of the iceberg. From writing and producing with Mariah Carey to working with Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Barbra Streisand, Walter has been behind some of the most unforgettable songs in music history. He co-wrote dozens of hits with Mariah Carey, including “Hero” and “One Sweet Day”—the record-breaking duet with Boyz II Men that held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 16 weeks. And let's not forget “My Heart Will Go On”—yes, the Titanic theme with Celine Dion—which earned him a GRAMMY for Record of the Year. Walter also won the Producer of the Year GRAMMY in 2000.This year, he's nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media for his song "Love Will Survive" with Barbra Streisand from the miniseries The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Walter co-wrote the piece with Hans Zimmer, Charlie Midnight, and Kara Talve, and produced it alongside Peter Asher. In this episode, we dig into Walter's incredible journey through the music world. From his early days working with Narada Michael Walden (fun fact: Walter played synths on “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”) to collaborating with some of the biggest voices in history, Walter is an absolute legend. He's also a dear friend, and I'm so excited to share our conversation with you today. Let's go!

Listen in to a very special episode of Conversations with Alan featuring award-winning author Heather Morris who joined me from Brisbane, Australia.Heather dropped by to discuss her New York Times Bestselling book, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, which has sold over 13 million copies worldwide since its release in 2018, and the Peacock series of the same name that premiered in May 2024. The series stars Harvey Keitel as Lale Sokolov and Melanie Lynskey as Heather.Heather first met Lale in December 2003, shortly after his wife had passed away. She was told by a friend, that he had a story worth telling, leading to many days spent with the tattooist of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Lale's life was forever changed the day he looked into the eyes of a young girl as he tattooed her left arm, and she tattooed her love into his heart. What Heather received from Lale was a love story set against the backdrop of the Holocaust. The possibility of survival for these lovers was slim, but prisoners 32407 and 4562 did survive. They endured a place etched in history as a Dante-esque circle of hell, survived a death march, were separated and reunited, married, and lived happily in Melbourne, Australia, for 58 years. The Tattooist of Auschwitz is the story of Lale and Gita.In 2018, Heather visited Auschwitz/Birkenau, an experience that profoundly deepened her understanding of the stories she had heard from Lale.Don't miss this chance to hear first hand from Heather to learn how meeting Lale changed her life and how the dream they shared of seeing his story on screen was realized this year.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz, based on a book by Heather Morris, follows the true story of Lali and Gita Sokolov, who fell in love as prisoners at the notorious concentration camp. The action moves between the chilling world of Auschwitz and Melbourne, Australia circa 2006, when Morris meets Lali (Harvey Keitel) and learns his history. “It's an inspiring story of love and survival in the darkest place on earth,” says Claire Mundell, who produced the Peacock limited series. Mundell, interviewed by cinematographer Nicole Hirsch Whitaker (Netflix's One Piece), reveqls how the project came together, from securing the IP rights to convincing Barbra Streisand to make her first-ever original song for TV, “Love Will Survive.”
Q&A on the Peacock series The Tattooist of Auschwitz with executive producer Claire Mundell and actors Jonah Hauer-King & Anna Próchniak. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. Based on the eponymously entitled novel, this is the powerful real-life story of Lali Sokolov, a Jewish prisoner who was tasked with tattooing ID numbers on prisoners' arms in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during World War Two.

Is it ever appropriate to fictionalise the Holocaust? That's a question highlighted by the controversies surrounding The Tattooist of Auschwitz, a 2018 novel by Heather Morris, which sold millions across the globe but also received criticism from some in the historical community for the way it represents the reality of Auschwitz. As a new TV adaptation arrives on Sky, Professor Richard J Evans speaks to Rob Attar about the book and the challenges facing all writers and film-makers seeking to tell stories about one of the darkest episodes in history. The Tattooist of Auschwitz, the debut novel for the gifted author, Heather Morris, was written while building a three year relationship with Lale Sokolov. Readers are taken back to April of 1942. Lale took his married brother's place to protect his family. The harrowing journey taken by this kind, caring and compassionate man is one of tragedy, hope, and perseverance. Lale and the others were herded into a cattle car. Some men were telling him to help them bust out of the cattle car but he cleverly replied, “If these walls could be breached don't you think a cow would've done it?” His witty comment calms them down and eases the frustration felt by all. They were taken to Auschwitz where Lale got typhus and was thrown on a cart for the dead. A young man pushed him off and the tattooist helped heal him and trained him to number the prisoners. Lale first met Gita as he numbered those entering Auschwitz. He asked how her day had been, she deftly answered, “Oh, you know how it is. Got up, had a big breakfast, kissed Mama and Papa goodbye before catching the bus to work…” to which Lale replied, “OK, dumb question.” Lale falls instantly and totally in love with this girl, 34902. Can love take root in conditions that are deplorable? The answer is yes! Lale and Gita proved it. Heather Morris shows readers the love story of a lifetime through the eyes of a sensitive soul. We learn how Lale and Gita's love impacted those around them. As Dana, Gita's friend said, “ It's enough that one of us has a little happiness, we share in it.” Lale's mother had once told him to be a good husband, “…learn to listen to her, learn what she likes and more important what she doesn't like.” This conversation occurred because Lale's dad was distant and cold. Lale didn't want to be like him so he sought the advice of his kind and caring mother. This story helps us learn to love better. “To save one is to save the world.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/recapbookchat/message
We'll be releasing new movie reviews every other week starting Tuesday, February 6 with our full breakdown, theme dives and Final Scores for 2020's "The Legend of Baron To'a". #Tonga #TheLegendOfBaronToa For our final standalone PMSK REview we take a deeper look into The Tattooist and its main character's ties to Pacific colonialism and the dynamics that shame cast on different characters in their own ways. It takes a real work of art to bounce from culture to culture, community to community and continuously take for your own personal gain, which is probably why it's hard to make a connection with Jake Sawyer in the first place. Let us know your thoughts on #TheTattooist #PMSK #REview #PasefikaMovieStarterKit
