Note: The first part of this episode has some clicks because of a connection issue. We tried to clean the sound up as best as we could. Bare with it because we really think it's worth listening to! This one's a long one, but one of our most amazing conversations. Drew and I spoke with Julie Cho and Erin Segal about their collaborative publishing project Thick Press. The two friends who met when they were 15 have been working together as graphic designer and social worker, asking hard questions about the value of work, juggling life and professions and sticking with relationships. We recorded this episode on November 8, 2024, two days after the US Presidential election. Despite the disappointment of the time, Julie and Erin showed up for our conversation in a way that can only be described as generous and present. Drew and I always joke that the podcast is “our therapy” and this episode couldn't be more validating of our motivations. We got to share about how we've struggled to keep Graphic Support Group going, the evolution of our friendship and admit to each other that we're still here and making the project happen. Julie and Erin took such care to hear us and opened up their stories for us to learn and reflect together. We are so appreciative of their time and words.Thick Press officially published “An Encyclopedia of Radical Healing” shortly after we recorded. They share the details about the massive project in the episode, so please check out their Instagram for more information and support their work with an order. They've also been super busy since we spoke! Here is a listing of some of their upcoming activities and recent publications:* Thick Press will be at the LA Printed Matter Art Book Fair at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena on May 15-18.* They have published Change the World: A Research Book for Children and Adults by Sibylle Peters, is based on 20 years of performance-based research at the Fundus Theatre in Hamburg.* The second, may we dream and design felt futures: where our creative being and practice can feel the sensations of care, intimacy, and liberation, by Denise Shanté Brown, is both a memoir and a guide to creative social practices.* The third, It's Too Late. Do It Anyway! David Schardt is the President and CEO of Forgeline Motorsports, a premier manufacturer of custom, lightweight forged wheels for high-performance and racing applications. In 1994, David co-founded Forgeline in Dayton, Ohio alongside his twin brother, Steve Schardt — their passion rooted in the family's long-standing involvement in the wheel business. With decades of hands-on experience in both distribution and manufacturing, David has helped grow Forgeline into a respected name in motorsports and automotive customization. Beyond business, he's a fan of muscle cars, racing, and the movie Tommy Boy. In this episode… Innovation in automotive wheels has evolved from basic functionality to bespoke design and racing performance. With customer expectations rising and technology advancing, companies must deliver both aesthetics and durability. How do you create a product that meets the intense demands of professional racers and car enthusiasts alike? According to David Schardt of Forgeline Motorsports, the key lies in customization, precision, and relentless quality control. By developing fully forged wheels made-to-order for specific applications, Forgeline has filled a crucial niche in the racing and high-performance vehicle market. David also emphasizes the importance of staying hands-on and leveraging strong partnerships, such as the company's majority-stake acquisition by Lacks Enterprises, to scale responsibly. On this episode of Gain Traction, Mike Edge welcomes David for a conversation about the origins of Forgeline, lessons from the wheel distribution business, overcoming anxiety in leadership, and what's next for the brand. David also shares a behind-the-scenes story of a near-disaster with a high-end show car — and how his team saved the day just in time. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:  [03:13] The Schardt family's multi-generational roots in the wheel industry [09:50] Why Forgeline was created to meet the needs of grassroots racers [10:29] How David and Steve found complementary strengths as co-founders [11:19] Why Forgeline sold a majority stake to Lacks Enterprises [12:24] Future goals: Forgeline wheels on OEM limited edition vehicles [12:48] The power of the Forgeline website gallery as a sales tool [14:18] How Tommy Boy resonates with anyone in sales [16:45] The unforgettable story of a $300k custom Camaro getting rear-ended Resources mentioned in this episode: David Schardt Forgeline Forged Alloy Wheels Tire Discounters American Racing Dayton Wire Wheel Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway Mike Edge on LinkedIn Tread Partners Quotable Moments:  "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway — that book changed my life and how I approach business decisions." An internationally recognized expert in the field of workplace communications and self-presentation, he has helped thousands of leaders achieve excellence through his work as an executive coach and his top-rated podcast, The Look & Sound of Leadership. Have you been told you should take more initiative? Or, perhaps you've been telling that to someone else? Either way, this conversation with Tom Henschel will outline three key steps to help you get started. Key Points Three steps to taking more initiative: Think and talk about your work. Ideas come through conversation. Execute on your idea. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Communicate what you've done. Initiative is often in the eye of the beholder. Imagine a scale that goes from bold to cautious. There's probably room for you to be at least 5% bolder. Feeling like you are waiting on others may be an indicator to take initiative. To calibrate where you land, ask yourself: “What's my typical pattern?” In correspondence, consider asking fewer questions and making more statements. Place yourself in situations where you'll need to show initiative. Part 1 Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers Summary"Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway" by Susan Jeffers is a self-help book that explores the concept of dealing with fear and building confidence to take action in various aspects of life. Here are the key points and themes presented in the book:Understanding Fear: Jeffers describes fear as a natural and universal emotion that everyone experiences. She emphasizes that feeling fear is not the problem; rather, it is how we respond to that fear that matters. Fear and Self-Doubt: The author links fear to self-doubt, explaining that many fears stem from a lack of confidence in our abilities. This fear can paralyze us and prevent us from pursuing opportunities. The Importance of Acknowledging Fear: Jeffers encourages readers to acknowledge their fears instead of ignoring them. By facing fear head-on, individuals can begin to understand it and lessen its hold over their lives.Taking Action: The central tenet of the book is to take action despite the fear. Jeffers argues that the best way to overcome fear is to participate in activities that challenge it, thus gaining confidence and experience.Decision-Making: One of the strategies presented is to develop a more positive decision-making approach. Jeffers suggests using affirmations and positive self-talk to shift our mindset about fear and decision-making.Accepting Uncertainty: The book discusses the inevitability of uncertainty in life. Jeffers teaches that it's important to embrace the unknown rather than shying away from it, as uncertainty often leads to new opportunities for growth.Empowerment Through Responsibility: Jeffers emphasizes personal responsibility in overcoming fear. She believes that taking ownership of our choices empowers us to change our lives.Building a Fear-Defeating Toolbox: Throughout the book, Jeffers provides practical exercises and tools to help manage and overcome fear, such as visualization, journaling, and seeking support from others.Reframing Fear: Instead of viewing fear as a hindrance, Jeffers suggests reframing it as a signal for personal growth. Where there is fear, there is often an opportunity for advancement and self-improvement.Overall, "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway" serves as a motivational guide for those looking to confront their fears and live a more fulfilled life. Jeffers' insights encourage readers to accept their fears, confront them, and take the necessary steps to pursue their goals.Part 2 Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway AuthorSusan Jeffers was an American author, motivational speaker, and psychologist, best known for her self-help book "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway," which was first published in 1987. This book quickly became a classic in the self-help genre, focusing on overcoming fear and developing self-confidence. It emphasizes that fear is a natural feeling, and it provides practical tools to manage it while encouraging readers to take action despite their fears. Other Books by Susan Jeffers:"The Feel the Fear Guide to Lasting Love" (1998) This book elaborates on applying the principles of feeling fear in personal relationships and finding love."Embracing Uncertainty: Break Through the Fear and Live the Life You Were Meant to Live" (2009) This book addresses the fear associated with uncertainty in general life decisions."End the Struggle and Dance with Life" (1993) This book invites readers to embrace life fully, presenting strategies for dealing with challenges."Dare to Connect: How to Create a Deeper, Meaningful Relationship Using Communication Skills" (2000) This is focused on enhancing relationships through better communication."Feeling the Fear: And Beyond" (2018) A more recent reflection on her core teachings with updated advice and lessons. Understand That Fear is Normal Recognize that it's normal to feel fear around prospecting, especially when approaching new people. The key is to reframe fear as a sign of growth rather than a barrier. Susan Jeffers wrote the book Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway.  In it, she emphasizes that “Pushing through fear is less frightening than living with the underlying fear that comes from a feeling of helplessness.” and that “Every time you take a step into the unknown, you experience fear. There's no point in saying, ‘When I'm no longer afraid, then I'll do it.' You'll be waiting for a very long time.” HUGE Announcement: You will love this! Connect with me here! Send me a text message! Ok I know what you are thinking….ive been out of routine so I haven't been faithful in my Jesus time recently. I've been out of routine with my kiddos home from school and vacations and what not. I haven't made the time to spend with God and now I'm a loser and feel super bad that I lost that time.  First just stop and listen to the lies you are telling yourself. Don't give in. Today is a new day and you can start fresh with God!! Woot! Brings me to this thought. There is a BIG difference conviction from the Holy Spirit and feeling shame or guilt. How do we know the difference you ask? Well we know the difference when we know Jesus well. And we know Him well by spending time with Him. BUT a good indicator is what are you feeling? Do you feel shame or guilt for not being as on task these past few months? Or do you feel like you desire for more of it and feel promptings to get back into it? Hear and see the difference here? Once makes you feel bad…the other is a calling for closeness. God doesn't shame us into spending time with Him. He draws us close so that we WANT to spend time with Him cause He knows we NEED Him! So…If you are feeling shamed because you have sort of fallen off the wagon with your Jesus time. Remember those feelings are from Jesus! Take those thoughts captive and bring them to Him.  - What's done is done and you can't go back to change it! Bring your regret to God, receive His beautiful grace and move forward with more gusto and purpose! And if you aren't feeling shame then great! BUT you probably are feeling a prompting to get back into routine right? Cause i'm guessing you aren't feeling yourself. You are more snippy or short with your family. Maybe you have sort of isolated yourself from peopling because of your attitude lol  Maybe you have felt more low or lacking purpose. If any or more of those things are happening then it's time to get back your Jesus time friend!Lastly, If you dont even have a desire, or you aren't feeling a prompting, because it's been so long…eeek. Some of this might be the lazy summer but some might be comfortability. And being too comfortable can be super dangerous so… DO IT ANYWAY. Get yourself into a routine so that when your kiddos school starts or you are back from your vacay and getting back to work or whatever, you will be ready to go!! Listen to episode 164 and 141 to help with some ideas on getting into a routine!Episode 141- https://www.buzzsprout.com/1769546/12212975Episode 164- https://www.buzzsprout.com/1769546/12820110Be encouraged, challenged and blessed today!!✨Come hang with me on IG- https://www.instagram.com/mrsangelapitnikoff/✨Want some fun free resources? To get better at copywriting, you need to practice. But how do you get the right kind of practice (and perhaps a few portfolio samples in the process)? Copywriter Wendy Ann Jones joins us for the 404th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast to share a new resource that helps you get the practice you need. We covered a lot more than that... you're going to want to stick around for this episode. Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript.   Stuff to check out: Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson The Copywriter's Workout by Wendy Jones The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground   Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: There's one thing that all writers have in common… that is we write. We write for ourselves and our clients. It's writing every day that helps us get better at the craft. But if you're not working with a client, you might be wondering what do I write? How can you use your writing time to create writing samples that read as if they are real and help you get good writing practice?  Hi, I'm Rob Marsh, one of the founders of The Copywriter Club. And for today's episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, Kira Hug and I talked with copywriter Wendy Ann Jones. Wendy quit a corporate job in order to start her own business, but when it came time to practice, she realized there weren't a lot of resources out there to help. So she created that resource—a book of practice clients and projects you can use to get better at the craft of writing and perhaps even create a few portfolio samples worth sharing with potential clients. If you're looking for ways to build your portfolio, you'll want to listen to what Wendy has to share… Before we jump in with Wendy… We have a new gift for you as a listener to The Copywriter Club Podcast. We went through the past 400 episodes of this podcast looking for the ideas that our guests have shared over the past couple of years related to finding clients. We pulled out a bunch of our favorites and compiled them into a new pocket sized guide that will inspire you as you look for ways to attract the right clients to your business. It's a bit like having a couple dozen of the best copywriters in your pocket advising you on how to find your next client. To get your copy, visit thecopywriterclub.com/pocket and download this new guide. And with that, let's go to our interview with Wendy Ann Jones. Kira Hug: Hi, Wendy. Let's just start with your story. How did you end up as a copywriter? OK. Wendy Ann Jones: So about February 2021 I was really super disillusioned with my job. I was working in corporate and I loved it. I did love it and it was very fast moving, very motivating and then the company took a turn and it was a bit boring. It was a bit boring, a bit dull, and there wasn't anything to learn. And I'm quite a lifelong learner. I'm always obsessed with learning things and like to be occupied and busy. And I was also going through the start of the perimenopause, which, you know, I'm sure a lot of women, women similar age to me will be like, yeah, nodding their heads. And I kind of thought, oh, I need to change, to do something different. I found a copywriting ad. It popped up on my Facebook, and it was like, oh, would you like to work the hours you want to work? And would you like to live wherever you want? And would you like to, you know, all these things? And I was like, yes, yes, that's exactly what I want. Yes, please. Yes, yes. And I've said this a few times before, but it was just that hook was my introduction to copywriting, right? Because it was like they were talking. exactly to me at the time that I needed them and I went on to like a free webinar it's like a five-day little mini training course and I loved it and then I signed on straight away obviously for a full-on copywriting course there and then and yeah just took part in that and obviously the key to that was find yourself ...

From kidnapping to "it takes a village" to "be A LOT uncomfortable" to get where we want to go in life, we found a lot of Marena's talking points really hit home. Young wisdom is so very humbling, especially when it clearly demonstrates how to reconcile immigrant histories and write our own chapters in them. What does that look like when we grow up with stalwart models of resilience and sacrifice? It often means inheriting a strong work ethic and failure-is-not-an-option gameplan, but there is a room to follow our north stars. Marena demonstrates this beautifully. In this episode, Dr. Aziz sits down with Dr. Robert Glover, author of No More Mr. Nice Guy. They dive deep into the traps that hold men back, from the comfort of the nursery to the relentless drive of 10x culture. Learn about the pitfalls of striving for perfection and how to break free from the patterns of self-doubt and fear. Dr. Glover shares insights on the importance of masculine initiation, overcoming isolation, and the power of connecting with good men to enhance personal growth. Discover practical steps to face your fears, build genuine confidence, and find balance in your pursuit of success. Tune in for a powerful conversation that will inspire you to take bold actions and live authentically. Break Free from Fear: The Path to Unstoppable Confidence The Proven Path to Confidence Dr. Aziz opens with a powerful statement: "This is always the path to confidence." With over 15 years of experience and countless success stories, he shares the ultimate strategy for building unwavering confidence: consistently facing your fears. Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway The concept is simple yet profound: to grow, you must step out of your comfort zone and confront what scares you. Dr. Aziz emphasizes that while many understand this idea intellectually, few truly live it. "Most people know it intellectually, but do not know it in their own experience of life." Fear is a natural part of growth. Instead of waiting for fear to disappear, Dr. Aziz encourages taking action despite it. This shift from passive waiting to active doing is the cornerstone of building lasting confidence. Key Steps to Conquer Fear 1. Immediate Action Acting quickly on new insights is crucial. When you learn something that can improve your confidence, put it into practice immediately. This swift action reinforces your courage and begins the process of transforming fear into confidence. 2. Consistent Action Confidence isn't built overnight. It requires regular, consistent actions that push your boundaries. Each small step outside your comfort zone adds up, gradually expanding what you're comfortable with. "Fear is an invitation. It's a guiding star, your compass to set your navigation." Real-Life Examples: From Anxiety to Extraordinary Confidence Dr. Aziz shares his journey of overcoming deep social anxiety. Afraid of speaking to people, especially women, and voicing his thoughts in groups, he found solace and a path forward in Susan Jeffers' book, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway. This pivotal moment helped him realize that waiting for fear to vanish was futile. Instead, he began taking immediate and consistent actions to face his fears head-on. A Conversation with Dr. Robert Glover In this episode, Dr. Aziz welcomes Dr. Robert Glover, author of No More Mr. Nice Guy. Dr. Glover shares insights from his extensive experience working with men on relationship and self-esteem issues. Here's a snapshot of his wisdom: On common recurring problems: "I see a lot of men feeling not good enough... driven by fear of failure, not good enough, and they've got to be more and more successful. It's never enough." On dealing with the ruminating brain: "We've turned it into something to be worshiped. Men are like, we bow at the altar of Navy SEALs, high performing, and super-exing your performance. And that's not all that life's about." On the impact of social media: "Put down the social media." On the practice of surrender: "The best way to open is to not close. So when your body and your mind, everything is saying no, how can you make it a yes?" On facing fears: "If something scares me now, I lean into it. I made a commitment when I turned 40. I didn't want to die afraid." On masculine initiation: "Masculine initiation can be dancing in front of a bunch of bros. It's about facing fears and getting out of your comfort zone." Practical Exercises to Start Today Not sure where to start? Begin with simple exercises. Greet a stranger or take a cold shower to challenge yourself. These small actions may seem insignificant, but they build the foundation for greater confidence. An Inspiring Message: Your Journey to Success Building confidence is a continuous journey. Dr. Aziz encourages you to practice self-compassion and celebrate each step forward, no matter how small. "May you have the courage to be who you are and to know on a deep level that you're awesome." Conclusion: Take the First Step Now The path to confidence is clear: face your fears, take immediate and consistent action, and embrace discomfort as a natural part of growth. Dr. Aziz's approach isn't about eliminating fear but transforming it into a powerful ally on your journey to self-discovery and empowerment. Are you ready to take the first step today?

Today's conversation on Back Porch Theology took place very recently at The Kerygma Summit here in Franklin, TN and this particular conversation was kind of the “chips and queso” moment of the whole weekend for me because I had the undeserved privilege of sitting down with some of my favorite female Christian leaders from around the country and gleaning from their collective wisdom. I framed the question that I posed to all of them like this: At sixty I know much less about God than what I thought I knew about Him at forty and what I pretended to know about Him at twenty. But what I now know to be true of God – namely His unconditional love and immutable faithfulness – I know in the very marrow of my bones. Then I asked each of them – many of whom are leading large ministries – what they now know to be true of God in the marrow of their bones. Their answers were gut-level honest, deeply encouraging, appropriately convicting at times, and always God and others honoring. This conversation was a living example of Psalm 68:11 - the Lord announces the word, and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng. Plus, since these saints came from various streams of the church, it was also a master class in unity and it reminded me of Jesus's response to John's question in Mark 9: “Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop because he was not one of us.” “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us. Christian unity is not the same thing as uniformity, y'all. We don't have to agree on every, single jot and tittle of what is theologically nuanced, but if we can agree on the fact that faith in Jesus Christ is the only way sinners like us can be reconciled with God, as well as the authority of God's Word, we're family. Remember the Bible also reveals that a divisive spirit is one of the six things that God hates (Proverbs 9) and whenever possible He calls us to be at peace and harmony with each other (Romans 12). Today's conversation is going to be like spiritual Gorilla Glue, it's going to fasten us tighter to our Creator Redeemer and tighter to the community of faith so please grab a cup of coffee or a glass of sparkling water with a wedge of lime or a thimbleful of wheatgrass juice and your Bible – unless you're trimming your roses, of course; mine have sprouted out with more enthusiasm than Einstein's eyebrows during the past few weeks of warm weather – and come hang out on the porch with us.
