This week, Voice journalists Jesse Marx and Will Huntsberry unleash an authoritative account of Covid: Year Two. Two years ago, we had to sue the county to gain access to county death records that mentioned Covid as a cause. Marx and Huntsberry led a team to analyze those records to grasp the toll of Covid in various communities and demographics in the county. Their recent slate of stories revealed how the vaccine changed things in the second year of the pandemic. About half as many San Diego residents died in the second year, compared to the first. Further, Marx and Huntsberry reveal how localized public health initiatives, anti-vaxx sentiment and misinformation molded San Diegans' behavior, and ultimately, their lives. See the series at vosd.org/yeartwo Also this week: Why San Diego still doesn't have a safe campground for unhoused Downtown residents. In this episode I welcome newly retired fellow FBI SSA Scot Huntsberry to talk about his career, and an important crimes against children case he ran in the early 2002s that highlights the important work the FBI has done in this arena for decades. The educational piece of the week is what crimes against children is, and the threat of the week is Kaspersky Labs. Give a listen, tell a friend. Scot Huntsberry, retired FBI supervisory special agent, shares today some revelations students had at the FBI's National Academy when introduced to mindfulness. All of us can benefit from increased self-awareness, more emotional intelligence, and finding the pause between the stimulus and our old responses of anger, frustration, resentment and aggression. What do you think a new FBI agent who's just moved his family of 7 to a new state for a new job turns to manage his stress? Does he take up running? Yep. Does he start training for a marathon? Yep. Does he listen to something while running that changes his life? Yep. Find out what Scot Huntsberry turned to in order to manage his stress, and then went on to train law enforcement professionals in at the FBI's National Academy. LET'S TALK THE WALK! Schools are back in session. Good Schools for All hosts Scott Lewis and Laura Kohn introduce Voice of San Diego's new education reporter Will Huntsberry, and the trio unpacks the latest education news you might have missed over summer break. Huntsberry discusses the misuse of Associated Student Body funds in San Diego Unified schools, new developments in the district's 2016 graduation rate controversy and offers his take on what makes education reporting in San Diego unique. The crew also discuss teacher misconduct and the slow-moving state system that allowed two Poway Unified teachers to continue working in education even after being forced out of schools for having romantic relationships with students. What's Working Immediate Access: It's a new program at San Diego State University that allows students to access course material, such as e-textbooks, for free by the first day of school. If students decide to stay in the class for the rest of the semester, they can buy the material at a reduced price. SDSU officials estimate the new program could save students close to $2 million. Number of the Week 10 percent: That's the percentage of educators who rent out their homes on Airbnb. In San Diego alone, educators reportedly made $2.7 million using Airbnb. Nine years ago today, we launched the Pickens Plan. We knew we had a great idea, and people across the country agreed. We'd held focus groups and found that Americans knew about the problem, but saw that the country lacked an energy plan. They were hungry for something that would work, a specific energy plan that included a little bit of everything -- solar, wind, and natural gas. For the final podcast on the history of the Pickens Plan, I talk with Peter McCollum, strategic communicator and Partner at Whistle Lake Public Affairs, and Jason Huntsberry, President & CEO of Schenck Foods Co. Although they referred to themselves as "little cogs in a big machine," they were a major part of the tight-knit team that makes the Pickens Plan tick.

I sat down on vacation and had a little chat with animal behaviorist, Mary Huntsberry. We talked about how she started her business and some hot tips on how to pick out a new pet for your home. Mary is an adorable little treat to talk to. You will seriously want to stick her in your back pocket and take her home after hearing this.
For today's Crizzlecast, I went to a friend's house to talk to the guests for this particular episode, Indy Week staff writers Vernal Coleman and Will Huntsberry. As we all gathered around a table, drinking Maxwell House vanilla caramel international coffee with some Evan Williams bourbon in it, we pretty much lost our gotdamn minds. Just here are some of things we discussed: journalism, women, raccoons, smoking crack, cross-dressing, the meaning of the term "caking," Keith Carradine, Dallas, New Journalism, New Orleans, light-skinned black people vs. dark-skinned black people, messing up on-camera, race and a particular actress who may or may not be a guest on this podcast soon. At some point, the actual owner of the house showed up at the end to throw in his two cents. I did this one just a couple of days ago, and I couldn't wait to post it. You'll hopefully find out why. Yeah, this episode is pretty epic!
