Catherine Connelly's entrepreneurial path wasn't without personal cost. While building and scaling MyYearbook during high school and college, she faced the intense pressure of balancing academics with executive responsibilities. This relentless pace eventually took a toll on her health, leading her to prioritize boundaries and self-care. Her experience highlights the often-overlooked emotional and physical demands of entrepreneurship, especially for young founders navigating expectations and legitimacy in fast-moving environments. Throughout her journey, Catherine encountered the challenges of gender bias head-on. Despite being a co-founder of a major platform, she was frequently underestimated—first by high school peers and later in professional spaces dominated by men. Rather than let these experiences diminish her drive, she used them to fuel her advocacy for systemic change in the startup ecosystem. She emphasizes the need to normalize female leadership in tech and to create inclusive, accessible pathways for underrepresented founders. For those inspired by Catherine's insights and experiences, she's offering a free virtual copy of her book Designing Success exclusively for YBA listeners.

Bruce Omar Yates discusses with Ivan six things which should be better known. Bruce Omar Yates was born in London to an English father and an Indian mother. Bruce grew up in the South of France before returning to London to study Literature and Film at King's College London. Bruce is principal songwriter for the cult rock groups Famy, who released their album We Fam Econo in 2014, and Los Porcos, who released their album Porco Mio in 2016. The Muslim Cowboy is his first novel and is out now from Dead Ink Books at https://deadinkbooks.com/product/the-muslim-cowboy/. English Milk Punch: a delicious low-ABV punch made from brandy, tea, spices and milk. It was popular in Victorian times - Dickens would drink it - as it is shelf stable. After refrigeration came along it lost popularity. I Cantautori Genovesi: Fabrizio De Andre, Gino Paoli, Luigi Tenco (and others) - a group of arty, literary songwriters from Genoa in the 1960s. They would enter songs to compete against each other in the Sanremo Music Festival. Deep romance. Luigi Tenco shot himself after losing the competition one year. Martin Maloney: A lesser celebrated but wildly influential painter from the YBA generation. His painting style is deliberately crude but makes deeply educated references to the canon. Sickle Cell Disease: One of the most common inherited diseases in the world, very cruel and life threatening, and particularly rife in West Africa and India. The Gulag Archipelago: Not exactly unknown, but not enough people have read it. The subject of Soviet war crimes is neglected relative to their scale, the book had a big historical impact, and Solzhenitsyn was a really great writer. Parenting: Discussion in the culture might make you think that parenting is exhausting, stressful, financially burdensome, and so on, but it's not, it's just wonderful. Well, it is the end of March, spring has sprung, and April showers are coming in fast and furious. We're back with the monthly Art Angle Round Up, where we focus our attention on three headline-making stories that have made the rounds in the last month. This week, Art Angle hosts Ben Davis and Kate Brown are joined by Artnet brand editor William van Meter. First up is the latest from controversy-machine Damien Hirst. The former YBA enfant terrible is back in the news for fudging the dates of his signature formaldehyde animal series, which itself follows the news from a few years ago that those same sculptures "leaked noxious gas." Next up is a conversation about the International Center of Photography (ICP), which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Ben's story, titled "How Do You Tell Photography's History? ICP's Big Birthday Show Embodies the Struggle" and William's "The Exquisite Life of Photographer David Seidner" broach larger questions about what ICP's vision is as a photography museum and more broadly address the state of photography today. Finally, it's our birthday! In February, we marked 10 years of Artnet News, and the trio revisits some of the biggest stories published over the last decade, and the future of art media.

Sotheby's Principal Auctioneer Oliver Barker joined Sotheby's in 1994 moving to the Contemporary Art department in 2001, rising to Chairman, Sotheby's Europe, Senior International Specialist in 2016. He is a key figure on the rostrum at the major auctions in both London and New York. Barker oversaw the iconic sale of Banksy's "Love is in the Bin," famously shredded by the artist moments after hammering for $1.04 million in 2018. Additionally, Barker participated in the livestream hybrid auctions – The Webby Awards introduced during the pandemic. Notable achievements include the sales of Francis Bacon's "Triptych Inspired by the Oresteia of Aeschylus'' for $84.6 million, Botticelli's "Portrait of a Young Man Holding a Roundel" for $92.2 million, and this year, the sales of Impressionist, Modern, and Contemporary art that brought $597 million in a single night. He and Zuckerman discuss three decades in a career, representing the company and the vendors, relationships with objects, the aesthetic experience, how should one start a collection, art as a place of solace, long term relationships, the YBA and the London art world of the early 1990s, the work that happens outside of the sales, the profound influence of art, and little know aspects of how he spends his personal life!

Coach C. Collins is back at it to help give his experience of coaching methods and tactics that can hopefully help you to grow in the game of basketball along with talking any other issues or video reactions that he wants to discuss. Todays topic do governing bodies like, CIF San Joaquin section, in California and other states have to much power over the future of high school athletes? In this episode Coach Collins will talk of the story and former YBA player Kiku Parker and his battle to play his senior year of basketball at Grant high school. C.I.F(California Interscholastic Federation) has been in power for a very long time and govern most if not all high schools in the state. There is story after story of the legendary corruption the members and former members of CIF, so it begs the question who is holding them accountable? A discussion with artist Glenn Brown. Finding inspiration in works from art history as well as science fiction, Brown creates beautifully crafted paintings built from layers of fine brush strokes and thin glazes. The process can take years, but yields paintings that captivate the viewer with sublime colors and intertwining strokes that invite the viewer's closer inspection. The conversation dives into Brown's artistic mindset and methodology, as well as a discussion about his current exhibit “We'll Keep On Dancing Till We Pay the Rent” at Gagosian's 24th Street location in New York - his first show in the city since 2014. https://gagosian.com/exhibitions/2022/glenn-brown-well-keep-on-dancing-till-we-pay-the-rent/https://glenn-brown.co.uk/

Another hour in conversation with artist Sarah Morris. Sarah was first on the program for Episode 51. In that conversation, we spent the hour trying to get inside the head of the noted painter and filmmaker. In contrast, this episode's conversation is more story time. Sarah shares a number of stories from the span of her career, including her entry into the New York art scene in the late 80s, her time in London during the reign of the YBAs, trying to shoot a sleep-deprived Kate Moss for Vogue and combating a museum's power play.
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Gavin Turk (@thisisnotgavinturk) Gavin Turk (b 1967) is a British born, international artist. He has pioneered many forms of contemporary British sculpture now taken for granted, including the painted bronze, the waxwork, the recycled art-historical icon and the use of rubbish in art. Turk's installations and sculptures deal with issues of authorship, authenticity and identity. Concerned with the ‘myth' of the artist and the ‘authorship' of a work, Turk's engagement with this modernist, avant-garde debate stretches back to the ready-mades of Marcel Duchamp. In 1991, the Royal College of Art refused Turk a degree on the basis that his final show, ‘Cave', consisted of a whitewashed studio space containing only a blue heritage plaque commemorating his presence ‘Gavin Turk worked here 1989-91'. Instantly gaining notoriety through this installation, Turk was spotted by Charles Saatchi and was included in several YBA exhibitions. Turk's work has since been collected and exhibited by many major museums and galleries throughout the world. Visuals: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/2022/01/21/episode-36-justin-tindall/Dead cats, sharing a flat with Damien Hirst, painting your toenails purple in Cannes…just when you thought'd you'd heard it all, along comes podcast number 36 with Justin Tindall.Amazing stories…some of which were actually about billboards ;-)Of course Justin is much more than dead moggys, friend of YBA's and dodgy pedicures. He is one of the world's most awarded creatives and ECD's - winning big at every show in the world during tenures at FCA!, DDB, Red Brick Road, Leo Burnett and M&C Saatchi. This success can be put down to many things (working in a creative team with Adam Tucker for one), but his level of craft is astounding. Justin is up there with another obsessive we spoke to on episode 13, Alexander Taylor - rivalling her casting of 33 scissors for Silk Cut with his own exhaustive search for the perfect beans on toast for Harvey Nichols, shooting (with @James Day) 30 different plates for the calendar campaign. God and Justin are in the details. Thanks again for coming mate. It was brilliant to see you again looking so fresh and ready for all that 2022 has in store for your exciting new agency @Platform.

Talk Art exclusive! Russell & Robert meet legendary British artist Dame Rachel Whiteread DBE for an intimate studio visit where we view her new works prior to installing her new exhibition ‘Internal Objects’. In Rachel Whiteread’s sculptures and drawings, everyday settings, objects, and surfaces are transformed into ghostly replicas that are eerily familiar. Through casting, she frees her subject matter—from beds, tables, and boxes to water towers and entire houses—from practical use, suggesting a new permanence, imbued with memory. We discuss childhood, experimenting with numerous materials as a student, the joy of sharpening pencils, studying with Richard Wilson, her now iconic artworks 'House' (1993) and 'Ghost' (1990), further early works made by casting a wardrobe and household furniture and her large permanent Holocaust Memorial (2000) in Vienna's Judenplatz. We learn about her ‘Shy Sculpture‘ series installed in unexpected international locations and hear of her experiences during the YBA years, and subsequently being the first woman to win the Turner Prize in 1993.We explore the new works made during lockdown including two large cabin-like structures 'Poltergeist' (2020) and 'Döppelganger' (2020–21) which now form the central part of a new exhibition at Gagosian’s Grosvenor Hill gallery, made of found wood and metal, meticulously overpainted in white household paint. The exhibition also features a new body of sculptures in resin and new works on paper, as well as recent cast sculptures in bronze, similar to works in bronze Whiteread made in 2000–10, and exhibited at a major retrospective at Tate Britain in 2017. Finally, we discover her interest in cinema, admiration for Italian Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca and living with contemporary artworks by Bridget Riley, Christopher Wool, Kiki Smith and Rebecca Warren and why Kenwood House in North London is worth a visit! Rachel Whiteread’s new solo show ‘Internal Objects’ opened this week at Gagosian in London and runs until 6th June 2021. Follow @RachelWhitereadOfficial and @Gagosian on Instagram. View exhibition views at Gagosian's website: https://gagosian.com/exhibitions/2021/rachel-whiteread-internal-objects/ A fully illustrated catalogue, including a short story by John Steinbeck and an essay by Richard Calvocoressi, will be published to accompany the exhibition. For images of all artworks discussed in this episode visit @TalkArt. In June of 2019, I asked now 17 year old Michael Xu to help me prepare for my interview with his bridge mentor/hero, Michael Rosenberg. This sparked his progression from The Setting Trick helper, to The Setting Trick intern, and finally to The Setting Trick guest. One year after I first reached out, Michael co founded the Youth Bridge Association, a nonprofit organization based on the idea of youth teaching youth bridge. As co president, Michael has helped host multiple classes as well as a tournament that drew 140 juniors! Michael has generously agreed to share the below letter, which upon reading, Kevin Rosenberg, Michael Rosenberg's son said, “it sounds like you're trying to date my dad!” Fabled “dating” email Dear Michael, A few months ago, when asked by my college counselor who would be the best person to write a letter of recommendation, the first and only person that came to mind was you. Before bridge, before SiVY, before you, I never thought I would come to identify so strongly with a community. If you asked me back then whether I believe that I will have such a robust relationship with a non-family member, I would have scoffed at that idea. Yet, over the span of 4 years, I have developed a truly extraordinary connection with you. From our first encounter in Toronto, to the first bombardment of emails, to the first in-real-life post mortem (@Atlanta), to the first dinner together (@Dennys), to the first time playing against you, to the first time hearing a "well-played" from your lips, and finally to the latest email, you have seen my growth from a completely clueless youngling to a now still slightly clueless and learning adolescent who knows some things. Michael, you are the only one. You saw me at the Trials, going past midnight to review boards. You saw me at WuJiang, China, where even at the World Youth Team Championships, I was more preoccupied with learning than sleeping/eating. You saw me flood your inbox with emails, and when you think you answered them all, I 'rewarded' you with countless follow ups and more new emails. In short, you saw my relentless pursuit to learn, my unprecedented level of insanity, my unrestrained intellectual vitality. Throughout my journey, you were my ultimate mentor, answering my plethora of questions, elucidating mysteries, and even providing me with life advice. Given our lengthy, special history, I feel that you are unique in your capability to vouch for me. Genuine intellectual curiosity is highly coveted by colleges, and I think you are most suited to testify about that on my behalf. Just as you had strongly advocated for me back in 2018 for the U16 team, I hope you will be able to advocate for me for college. Would you be willing to write me a strong and unique letter of recommendation for my college application? If you have any follow up questions or need any further information, please don't hesitate to let me know. Sincerely, Michael Episode highlights: 1:50- Is YBA for college application resume stacking??? 3:20- How the YBA came to be 4:40- YBA class details 14:00- YBA is about advanced youth players paying it forward and giving back to the community 19:15- Michael Xu = Michael 1(?) 23:10- How Michael came to partner Finn Kolesnik 25:50- The Setting Trick internship = ultimate girls attractor 30:35- Michael's work with Professor Samantha Punch and BAMSA research project 33:10- Michael Rosenberg gets bombarded by Michael Xu with thousands of emails full of questions 36:50- MEAT and Kevin Test 39:30- Michael's attempt at dating Michael Rosenberg 46:20- How Michael learned bridge through SiVY 50:15- How listeners can help out the YBA 54:45- Michael is getting beat in the Life Master race by the younger SiVY generation

In the seventh episode of "Barbara London Calling," Barbara speaks with Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, two London-based artists and collaborators with a background in installation art and the moving image. Music has always played an important role in their work, culminating in their 2014 feature film, "20,000 Days on Earth," a musical docudrama starring the iconic singer/songwriter Nick Cave. Iain and Jane began their fruitful collaboration as students at Goldsmiths in London, where they saw firsthand the good and the bad of the so-called YBA movement of young British artists.
Who doesn't love receiving gifts? Some prefer giving more than receiving. Whether giving or getting, that trip, that rose, that letter, its the thought the counts. What about the gift of SELF? We didn't receive any questions (what's up with that?) so we dove into the flack that Jeannie Mai received for saying that she is willing to submit to her husband. Artfully is BACK after a hiatus and despite a summer dominated by Covid-19, there are still some juicy art world controversies to feast upon. We take on the controversial job losses at the Tate galleries, the drama at the Musee d'Orsay after they refused entry to a woman in a low-cut dress, and the new Mayfair gallery opened by Charles Saatchi's daughter, Phoebe Saatchi Yates. We also share some good news from Christie's, who held an auction of works by Black artists where collectors had to pledge not to flip the works. Finally, from the sublime to the ridiculous: is Art Attack's Neil Buchanan actually Banksy? Elsewhere we select our top tips for exhibitions this Autumn including Edmund de Waal at the British Museum and a girl power gang round-up of Cecily Brown, Chantal Joffe, Katherine Bernhardt, Jadé Fadojutimi and Flora Yukhnovich. Our Artist Focus this episode is British artist Sarah Lucas. Born out of a boozy, party-hard YBA art scene, her profile has continued to rise to meteoric heights. She represented her country at the Venice Biennale in 2015, and nabbed her first American museum retrospective in 2018. We discuss sex, body parts, and those famous fried eggs. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Mat Collishaw. Mat Collishaw was a key figure in Damien Hirst's legendary Freeze exhibition, as well as Charles Saatchi's controversial [at the time] Sensations exhibition at the Royal Academy. Mat has used the latest VR technology to recreate William Henry Fox Talbot's 1839 photography exhibition, even including the Chartist's protest. In this episode Carlo meets Tim Strange in his beautiful beach hut on England's south coast. Tim is an artist, photographer, educator and, notably, one of less than 1800 people to have swum the English Channel. Tim talks with great clarity about how he came to take on the challenge of the Channel swim - a feat that has been completed by less than half the number of people than have climbed Mount Everest. Tim also talks about studying fine art at Goldsmiths in the shadow of the YBA's, his art practice and how he makes his stunning photography, and his love of teaching. A couple of weeks ago the National Gallery of Art (SMK) here in Copenhagen unveiled a bronze sculpture in front of the museum by Gillian Wearing called A Real Danish Family. This is also in conjunction with an exhibition of her works, they are both well worth seeing. We were lucky enough to have the chance to sit down with Gillian to talk both about the sculpture she made about this danish family, and about her work in general. You are indubitably familiar with her work, she is quite well known, both as a YBA - the young british artists, and for her work since. If you have a chance to see the show here at SMK then you definitely should, several of her works are much stronger in person, for example the self-portraits of her as her family are pretty breathtaking in person. Enjoy, and stay tuned for some big news next time around!
