My guest this week is Dr. Jeannie Constantinou, back with us once again to discuss her works on Andrew of Caesarea's commentary on the Book of Revelation. Andrew is a Church Father, and his commentary on Revelation is the go-to work on the Apocalypse for the Orthodox Church. Since the late 1800's, there have been a lot of misconceptions and misrepresentations regarding the Book of Revelation. There have been movies and books like "The Late Great Planet Earth" and the "Left Behind" series that falsely tell of a pre-tribulation rapture. And now in pop culture, many use out-of-context quotes from the book and fit their own predictions and ideas into them. Jeannie explains how Andrew of Caesarea studied the Book of Revelation, his interpretations of it, how he arrived at various explanations, and more. Why isn't the Book of Revelation read liturgically in our Church? We get into that and a lot more. Yet few Christians have a good grasp of the first-century historical and religious context in which the Crucifixion took place, nor of its true significance for the people of that time-and hence for our time as well. Biblical scholar and attorney Dr. Jeannie Constantinou puts modern readers in the center of the events of Christ's Passion, bringing the best of modern scholarship to bear while keeping her interpretation faithful in every particular to the Orthodox Tradition. Having explained the grace we receive in the Mystery of Holy Illumination in Romans 6, St. Paul is nonetheless completely honest about the reality of Christian life and the continuous spiritual struggle required. He expresses the experience of all of us. Too often we do what we do not want to do, and what we actually want to do is not what we end up doing. Why is this the case and what can we do about it? Dr. Jeannie Constantinou explains.

Except for reciting the Lord's Prayer, written prayers are virtually unknown in non-liturgical Christian churches. Isn't it cheating, or somehow unspiritual, to use “canned prayers”? In this episode, we explore a few drawbacks of spontaneous prayer, and with help from some AFM content contributors (Dr. Jeannie Constantinou, Fr. Barnabas Powell, and others), we consider the benefits of praying with the wisdom of the Church. It's not an either/or proposition, but both/and.
