Ephesians 4:10-13 God speaks thru prophets and apostles. Jesus loves you so much that he gave the church gifts. “The One who climbed down is the One who climbed back up, up to highest heaven. He handed out gifts above and below, filled heaven with his gifts, filled earth with his gifts. He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christ's followers in skilled servant work, working within Christ's body, the church, until we're all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God's Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ.” – Ephesians 4:10-13  The Message by Eugene Peterson “And he (Jesus) himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God's Son, growing into maturity with a stature measured by Christ's fullness.” – Ephesians 4:11-13  CSB 1. Prophets God speaks. Prophecy – speak on behalf of God before others Prophet – one who speaks inspired utterances on behalf of God “The name ‘prophets' (in Eph. 4:11) is given to those who, having received the Spirit of God, spoke beforehand of Christ and his advent. These were the prophets who “were until Christ.” But after he arrived, was there no reason for any further prophecy? What prophets does Paul speak of here? It is obviously those who being full of the Spirit spoke of God after his coming, continuing to expound the divine teaching.” – Marius Victorinus 280-363 Old Testament prophets spoke the message God gave them, and many pointed to Jesus Christ. “Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet.” – Matthew 1:22  CSB Some New Testament prophets: John the Baptist, Anna in Luke 2:36, Agabus in Acts 11:29, 21:10,  Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen in Acts 13:1-2, Silas & Judas Barsabbas in Acts 15:32, 4 daughters of Phillip in Acts 21:8-9,  John in Revelation “the spirit of prophecy” – Revelation 19:10 “This means that prophecy at its very heart is designed to unfold the beauty and loveliness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” – John Walvoord Training, Discernment, and Accountability:  “Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should evaluate. But if something has been revealed to another person sitting there, the first prophet should be silent. For you can all prophesy one by one, so that everyone may learn and everyone may be encouraged. And the prophets' spirits are subject to the prophets, 33 since God is not a God of disorder but of peace.” – 1 Corinthians 14:29–33   CSB  “many false prophets will appear and fool many people,” – Matthew 24:11    Elijah school of the prophets in 1 Kings 19:18, training people in understanding the Scripture, discerning God's voice, and speaking it. In 2 Kings 2 we see groups of prophets interacting with Elijah and Elisha. Paul & Barnabas – described as “prophets and teachers” then commissioned, sent in apostolic ministry “Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.' Then after they had fasted, prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them off.” – Acts 13:1-3  CSB 2. Apostle – an envoy of Jesus, a representative messenger sent, a “special” messenger (having been commissioned by Jesus Christ for a particular task or role, invested with the authority to speak on his behalf)   …borrowing and changing a Greek term for, emissaries, one who is to carry a message and is commissioned to extend the kingdom (military or naval) a commander of a naval expedition (generally restricted to the immediate followers of Jesus Christ, but also extended, as in the case of Paul, to other early Christians active in proclaiming the message of the gospel) – Louw, J. P., & Nida, E. A. (1996). In Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament “Paul, chosen by God to be an apostle and sent out to preach his Good News.” – Romans 1:1  (possible reference to a Jewish embassy in Rome that required travel by sea) Denotes God-given spiritual authority, mission and message, to be recognized by others (including leaders) Influence in more than one local church Alignment > Heirarchy  God speaks. God had spoken. God is speaking. God will speak. “This is a house set up and ordered by Jesus.… He does not do this in a casual manner. It is with the utmost discrimination and discretion: One is assigned to the rank of an apostle, one to the place of a prophet, others to look after the flock of Christ and to work at the divine instruction of others for those saints who are prepared to learn.” – Didymus the Blind a Biblical scholar 313-398 What are prophets & apostles? Gifts from Jesus to his church. Representatives and messengers. They speak when God has given them something to say. The church leaders recognize it and the church receives it. Each of the 4 Gifts function when recognized and received. What are prophets & apostles NOT? Free to do what they want, however they want. Not dictators. Not celebrities. Not gurus. What is the purpose of our interactions with the 4 Gifts? Sent to equip the church for ministry. Sent to build up the church. Sent to help the church learn about Jesus and become more like Jesus. Sent to help the church grow stronger spiritually, able to refute wrong thinking. Equipping – making, preparing, training, perfecting, making fully qualified for service, (in classical language the word was used to describe setting a bone during surgery – The Great Physician is now making all the necessary adjustments so the church will not be “out of joint”) What should we do? 1.       Read Ephesians 3:14-21 and 4:1-16. 2.       Pray, asking God for guidance. 3.       Think about what we are reading. 4.       Write down elements of God's purpose for us. 5.       Write down ways in which we should interact with the 4 Gifts. Extra notes: “the spirit of prophecy” – Revelation 19:10 Worship God, because the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” – Revelation 19:10  CSB The word “testimony,” or witness, references someone who has seen or experienced something to be the case. John and his brothers are therefore witnesses and the bearers of testimony to the plan and purpose of God for redemption in Jesus. Consequently, God is the only appropriate object of worship. This is explained by the somewhat enigmatic statement, “For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Here the word “prophecy” (proph?teia), which arises from a combination of “speak” (ph?mi) and “before” (pro), an important use of the word essentially meaning “speak for God before.” Before what? is an appropriate question. One sense of the preposition (pro) would be to speak about an event before it happens. Another sense would be to speak before listeners of the purpose and acts of God. Likely in this case both of these senses are paramount. In any event, the meaning is actually reasonably clear: The spirit of both the proclamation and the telling of the future is bound up in the testimony of Jesus. Jesus the Lamb—and not just a chronology of last things—is the theme of the Revelation. As Walvoord succinctly declares, “This means that prophecy at its very heart is designed to unfold the beauty and loveliness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” – Patterson, P. (2012). Revelation (E. R. Clendenen, Ed.; Vol. 39, pp. 345–346). B&H. Evangelist – one who announces the Good News of Jesus (in particular a function rather than an office) …such as Philip in Acts 8:4, 12, 35, 40, 21:8 and Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:5  1 Thessalonians 3:2  Philippians 2:22  and two women in Philippians 4:3  Titus in 2 Corinthians 8:18  Epaphras in Colossians 1:7  NT Evangelists – Paul/Phillip NT Church – 1 Tim 3:15, 5:1-2  1 Cor. 12:16-17 Note: not all evangelists were apostles, but all apostles were evangelists “Then he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.'” – Jesus in Mark 16:15-16  CSB All disciples – “Make disciples,” – Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20  “How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.” – Romans 10:14-15  CSB Preachers: Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors/Teachers will preach. Ephesians 4:11-13 “Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. Topical Sermons / Speaker:Berry Kercheville “And He Gave Evangelists…” (2) Introduction: What would you say are the top four greatest needs in God's kingdom today? I'm sure we could all come up with good answers to that question. I will give you my top four: The first is obvious: Christians who are passionate about knowing God, loving God, and loving lost souls.  Moms and Dads who raise their children to pursue the one true God and bring all other pursuits in service to him. Elders who equip and shepherd the flock, not “exercise authority of them” (Matthew 20:25, 1 Peter 5:1-4). Evangelists who actually “do the work of an evangelist” as outlined by Paul in 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus. Paul told us that these last two needs, along with the apostles and prophets, were gifts Christ gave to the church for the equipping of the saints, to bring them to maturity in order to cause the growth of the body (Ephesians 4:11-16). These lessons are about gaining a better understanding of  the need for evangelists in God's kingdom and what we can do to encourage a desire to do this work.  Recap from the First Lesson When we study Paul's letters to Timothy and Titus, we cannot miss the challenge and the extensive nature of the work. Just as God set aside the tribe of Levi to spend their lives teaching Israel, so he gave “evangelists, shepherds and teachers” to the church to equip and grow the body. The failure of the Levites to fulfill their purpose led to the failure of the whole nation to live up to God's purpose. Today, God did not appoint a whole tribe, he appointed individuals who give their lives to bring the gospel message both to equip Christians and to spearhead reaching lost souls. But the shortage of evangelists is becoming more and more apparent.  Paul's Overview of the Work: 1 Timothy 4:6-16  Vs. 6: “…trained in the words of faith…”  7-8: “…train yourself for godliness”  11: “Command and teach these things.”  12: “Set the believers an example…”  13: “Devote yourself to the public reading of the Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching”  14: “Do not neglect the gift…” 15: “Practice these things, immerse yourself in in them…”  16: “Keep close watch…Persist in this…” Conclusion: These are not things that can be done by men who hold a secular job.  Why Not Be Content with the Men Preaching? “Preaching” is not “doing the work of an evangelist”  It was not God's design (Ephesian 4:11-12) Who will go out at night to teach the lost? Who will teach the lost in the daytime? Who will train and equip the church to do their part in evangelism efforts? Who will train more men to be evangelists? The Result: whole churches are being trained to neglect the lost and be content with the “99” (Matt. 18)  What Keeps Men from Preaching? First, the increasing wealthiness of our culture, which is enticing to young, college age men. The possibilities of living a comfortable and prosperous life are all around them. In conjunction with the above, relying on a church for wages feels uncomfortable and unstable to a man who plans to be married and raise a family. This is especially true when these same young men have repeatedly witnessed churches discharge a preacher every few years. (Of course that is not exclusive to preaching!) Relying on churches for support to work at a church that is not self-supporting. I have had preachers tell me they could never do what I have done and be in a church where they needed outside support. “How can I be confident that the support won't be dropped on a moment's notice?”  Second, preaching is often not a draw to younger men when they consider the whole church can become their “boss and critic.” Further, they have often seen preachers mistreated. Talk to any older preacher—their greatest trial will have come from their own brethren. Therefore, there are many who have decided to work a secular career job while utilizing opportunities to “preach a sermon” as the need arises. That certainly shouldn't be considered wrong, but it does contribute to the lack of evangelists. Third, preaching is not a “job,” it is a passion. Paul said it well in 1 Corinthians 9:16-17, “For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship.”  I trained one man who had wanted to preach from the time he was 14 years old. He went to FC and majored in Bible (not a good idea), and then asked to train with me. I had known him from childhood, and therefore accepted him. After six months I said to him, “I think you would be happier doing something else. What do you think?” He agreed, and went back to school for a secular job. The problem wasn't that he couldn't preach a sermon. It was that it wasn't his passion. Frankly, he hadn't even learned what it meant to love God with all his heart. Too many young men see preaching as a job. Another young man possibly could have become a good evangelist, but he submitted to his wife's insistence that his working hours be only 9 to 5.  Which brings up another hindrance: wives must be passionate about their husband's work.  Fourth, embedded in preaching are hardships and choices we would rather not make: There is a very interesting “American culture” problem that has seriously affected preachers and potential preachers. When a preacher is looking for a church, it is natural to do “background checks” on the church and how they have treated former preachers. We certainly do not want to go to a place where the elders or members are abusive. On the other hand, if you were a preacher, would you want to go to a church like Corinth? No, no! Paul sent Titus to “churches” on the island of Crete who were, “…always liars, evil beasts, and lazy gluttons.” Paul basically said, “Titus, I want you to go a fix that!” Oh my. Consider “the Law of the Lid”  How many churches today are in the category of needing good elders and a good evangelist to “put in order the things that are wanting?” There is certainly a great need, but who wants to do that!!! The first place I preached, there was one faithful member, a lady named Bernice. I was told by elders that I would be foolish to go there. “It's a retirement community and no one is interested in the gospel. And besides, over the past seven years, 50 men have gone out there and preached sermons, to no avail.” But in the first three years we baptized 60 people, and one of the same elders then said to me, “Well, it must just be fertile ground.” For seven years, Bernice could not get a preacher to go and live there and do the hard thing (not just go preach and sermon and go home). Fifth, parents rarely prepare their sons to consider preaching or talk to them about the importance of the work in God's kingdom. I'm not suggesting that parents badger their sons to preach; that is not appropriate. Instead, I would recommend two approaches: Instill in your boys and girls our identity as disciples of Christ. Instill God's love for all people and his desire for them to be saved. And help them feel the weight of our responsibilities as Jesus' disciples — Jesus appointed us, only us, to bring the saving gospel to the world. If we don't do it, no one else will! (Parable of Lost Things & our identity as the Offspring of Abraham) Prepare them, and not just your sons, but also your daughters.  How to answer commonly asked questions using the scripture (Why does worship matter? Salvation, etc. Teach them to open their mouths and explain biblical texts! That is done far better by parents than it is in our Sunday/Wednesday classes. Teach them to give a speech, not a biblical speech, just a speech. [story of Dad and the speech of Spartacus to the Gladiators]  Sixth, a lack of training and mentoring.  In other words, how many churches and preachers are intent on obeying 2 Timothy 2:2 or followed the pattern of training that we see Paul doing?  Erik, Brent, Andy, and I have all turned down young men who desired to preach because they didn't understand the extent of the work. “I didn't know I'd have to work this hard.” “I don't like you telling me what I'm doing wrong in my preaching. I just want encouragement.”  In many cases, there are those who can preach a sermon, but the work described in Ephesians 4:11-16 and the “pastoral epistles” is not being done, and therefore understandably intimidating. Why shouldn't it be? It is often not seen/practiced among evangelists, shepherds and teachers. I personally cannot count the number of young preachers who have come out of one–two year programs, moved to a church, but haven't the slightest idea what to do other than “preach.” What about reaching the lost? What about engaging the church in the effort? What about moving the church to maturity? What about equipping the saints?  The need for patience on the part of the elders and the members, and humility to learn on the part of the preacher. The amazing salvation that God the Father planned, the Son procured, and the Holy Spirit predicted. In other words, God has been planning throughout time to redeem and save us from our suffering through Christ. Peter writes about the work of the prophets of old to record the direction of the Holy Spirit that we might know the long-planned promise of God. They were there at the dawn of radio, with the first commercial broadcast of music being played around Christmas in 1906, and the gospel of Luke was read. A similar story is true for television. Evangelists loved the new medium, with preachers like Oral Roberts using it to spread their brand of Pentecostalism. Pentecostalism was made for television. Where many denominations featured calm worship services, it seemed like anything could happen with Oral Roberts' brand of Pentecostalism. He healed, he made big claims, and he made a lot of money. Roberts' format was followed by people like Jim Bakker and Pat Robertson. Pat Robertson created the Christian Broadcasting Network, which later functioned as his platform for launching the political careers of politicians and, eventually, himself. Robertson's influence is all over evangelicalism, from the ubiquity of consumerism and prosperity ideology to our involvement in political movements. He formed the Christian Coalition and was a leader in the Council for National Policy. Robertson attended many of the seminal meetings of the Religious Right. And his message was amplified by his powerful television platform. That's the honest picture we draw as we pray over the global church and unpack a vivid dream on a bridge in Berlin: the waters of revival rush where honor flows, and they stall where apostles and prophets are sidelined. We carry a bold conviction—God is ready to add billions—yet many congregations stay busy without breakthrough because we mislabel gifts, resist biblical roles, and treat apostolic offices with suspicion instead of faith.We walk through scripture with clarity and courage. Paul identified as an apostle without flinching, not to boast, but to name his assignment. Ephesians outlines the fivefold ministry—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—not as a hierarchy, but as a complete ecosystem for the perfecting of the saints and the work of ministry. Evangelists gather, pastors guard, teachers ground, prophets guide, and apostles govern and pioneer. When we honor all five functions, grace flows in proportion to our reception. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Christians faced 2,211 hate crimes in Europe last year Christians and churches are facing increased attacks in Europe. The Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians in Europe released their latest report on Monday.  Christians faced 2,211 hate crimes across the continent last year. The number is slightly down from 2023, but last year saw a rise in violent crimes like physical attacks and arson.  The countries with highest number of anti-Christian incidents were France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, and Austria. 189 university evangelists gathered in Spain The Fellowship of Evangelists in the Universities of Europe held their 17th annual meeting in Spain recently. Evangelical Focus reports 189 university evangelists from 39 countries attended the conference. Evangelists are committed to the public proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the universities of Europe.  The article noted, “A strong theme of the conference was the renewed spiritual openness emerging across the continent, particularly among young people.” Romans 10:15 says, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!” Trump lifted tariffs on 200 food products In the United States, President Donald Trump lifted tariffs on over 200 food products last Friday. The products include coffee, beef, bananas, and orange juice.  The move comes as Americans face rising grocery prices. Listen to comments from President Trump aboard Air Force One.  TRUMP: “For the most part, the foods, when we cut back a little bit on those tariffs, will get the price down. But they're not competitive in this country, like tomatoes and bananas and things we don't make in this country. So, there's no protection of our industries or our food products.” President Trump also suggested sending $2,000 tariff rebate checks to most Americans next year. House to release Epstein Files without redacting perpetrators' names The House of Representatives, in a near-unanimous vote, passed a bill on November 18 that would require the Department of Justice to release more files surrounding the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, reports The Epoch Times. The final tally was 427–1. Republican Congressman Clay Higgins of Louisiana was the sole lawmaker who voted against the measure. Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota said he will take up the bill. The Epstein Files Transparency Act, introduced by Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna of California and co-sponsored by Republican Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky, would order the Department of Justice to release “in a searchable and downloadable format all unclassified records, documents, communications, and investigative materials” tied to Epstein no later than 30 days following the enactment of the bill. The legislation would prohibit the Justice Department from withholding, delaying, or redacting records for reputational and political reasons. Oregon to pay 2 teachers $650,000 over their objection to biological boys entering female bathrooms A school district in Oregon recently agreed to a $650,000 settlement for wrongfully terminating two teachers who opposed transgender ideology.  Back in 2021, Grants Pass School District terminated two teachers named Rachel Sager and Katie Medart. The two had voiced objections to allowing biological boys to enter female bathrooms and locker rooms.  Alliance Defending Freedom represented the teachers in the case.  Attorney Mathew Hoffmann said, “Teachers don't give up their First Amendment rights when they set foot on school property. Public schools can't retaliate against speech simply because they disagree with what's said.” Deaths by in vitro fertilization surpass abortion deaths Live Action reports the number of lives lost to in vitro fertilization now surpasses those lost to abortion. In 2023, 3.8 million embryos were created through in vitro fertilization. Of those, 1.9 million embryos died or were deliberately killed. Another 1.7 million embryos were either miscarried, destroyed, donated to researchers, released for embryo adoption, or frozen indefinitely. Only 95,860 babies were born through the process. In comparison, there were one million abortions in the U.S. in 2023. Live Action noted, “In vitro fertilization is not about creating life but about controlling it, determining which lives are accepted as valuable and worthy and which are automatically destroyed for being deemed ‘subpar'.” Only 49% of Americans say religion important to daily lives A new report from Gallup found that the U.S. is experiencing one of the largest drops in religiosity in the world. Forty-nine percent of U.S. adults say religion is an important part of their daily lives today, down from 66% in 2015. The only countries with greater drops in religiosity, over a 10-year period, are Greece, Italy, Poland, Chile, and Turkey. However, Americans still have medium-high levels of Christian identification. The report noted, “The U.S. increasingly stands as an outlier: less religious than much of the world, but still more devout than most of its economic peers.” Revelation 3:15-16 warns, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” Last penny was just minted last week And finally, the United States Mint struck its final penny last Wednesday. The penny was authorized under the Coinage Act of 1792. At the time, a penny could purchase items like a biscuit, a candle, or a piece of candy. Not anymore. In fact, it costs nearly four cents to make a penny now.  The U.S. Mint has struck the penny in its current form since 1909, featuring the motto, “In God We Trust.” U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach struck the final penny last week.
