Durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana de 2025, nos inspiramos en el liderazgo, los logros, los legados y las experiencias vividas de los latinos en todo Estados Unidos. De esta inspiración surgió la iniciativa Liderazgo Arraigado de la serie de podcasts Latina Today, con el invaluable apoyo de la Cámara Hispana de Cincinnati. Ani proviene de una familia de siete hijos, seis mujeres y un hombre. Su padre, gerente general de una compañía de productos lácteos, les inculcó valores como el liderazgo, la empatía y la innovación. Bajo su dirección, la compañía, que inicialmente solo producía mantequilla, se consolidó como una de las más importantes del sector lácteo en Perú. Ani considera que su padre, con su arduo trabajo y dedicación, fue una gran fuente de inspiración. Se siente afortunada de haber crecido con esos valores. El liderazgo que Ani describe la llevó a convertirse en escritora y a obtener el International Latino Book Award con su primer libro, “Nos vemos en el purgatorio”. Este logro marcó el inicio de una nueva etapa en su vida. Si bien Ani siempre ha escrito en diferentes áreas como relaciones públicas y periodismo, la ficción era un terreno nuevo para ella. La experiencia ha sido muy positiva, especialmente porque ha abierto oportunidades para otros escritores que escriben en español en Estados Unidos. Durante los últimos quince años, Ani se ha dedicado a promover el talento de escritores hispanos en este país. Para Ani, uno de los aspectos de los que se siente muy orgullosa, además de los demás, es que desde el principio, hace aproximadamente quince años, identificó la falta de apoyo para quienes escribimos en español en Estados Unidos. Acuñó el término “literatura de fusión” o el concepto de literatura de fusión, refiriéndose a quienes escribimos originalmente en español, no a quienes han sido traducidos. Observa una diferencia muy marcada entre estos escritores: hemos creado algo completamente nuevo con nuestra escritura, que no es peruana ni estadounidense, sino una escritura de emigrantes. No traemos nuestra cultura y la mezclamos con lo que experimentamos en Estados Unidos. Ya no somos solo peruanos, por ejemplo, en mi caso, tengo muchas más cosas en común con alguien de Venezuela que con alguien de mi país. Después de treinta y siete años en Estados Unidos, Ani considera relevante este tipo de literatura. En ocasiones, deseamos emular a alguien de nuestro país de origen; sin embargo, nuestra identidad se ha visto enriquecida por la interacción con diversas culturas, no solo en Estados Unidos, sino también a través de nuestros hijos que crecen en este país y nos influyen. Mi literatura refleja esa influencia multicultural, similar a la deliciosa comida fusión peruana que combina elementos de la cultura china y japonesa, explica Ani. Ani agradece a Lorena Mora-Mowry por la entrevista, ya que “es muy difícil. A veces, cuando uno se siente solo, no siente que está empujando el Titanic. As Stephen Greenblatt argues in his new biography, Dark Renaissance: The Dangerous Times and Fatal Genius of Shakespeare's Greatest Rival, virtually everything in the Elizabethan theater can be seen as “pre- and post-Tamburlaine.” Shakespeare learned from Marlowe, borrowed from him, and even tried to outdo him. Beyond his theatrical innovation, Marlowe was a poet, provocateur, and likely spy whose turbulent life was cut tragically short. You may know Al Letson as a journalist—he's the host of the popular investigative podcast Reveal. Before that, he created and hosted the public radio show State of the Re:Union. But Letson is also an actor, writer, playwright, and poet. His play Julius X: A Re-envisioning of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare kicks off Folger Theatre's 2025-26 season. Julius X isn't an adaptation of Julius Caesar — it's a new play that borrows from Shakespeare's language, characters, and plot to tell a different story. In Letson's play, Julius X is a fictionalized version of Malcolm X. The play mixes lines from Shakespeare with Letson's original poetry and songs. It expands the roles of Shakespeare's female characters, as well as that of Cinna the poet. Letson discusses the origin story of Julius X - a hint: it involves an audition, his lifelong love for Malcolm X, and the lessons he learned as an artist from Bill Moyers' series, The Language of Life: A Festival of Poets. Born in New Jersey, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, at age 11 and, as a teenager, began rapping and producing hip-hop records. By the early 1990s, he had fallen in love with the theater, becoming a local actor and playwright, and soon discovered slam poetry. In 2000, Letson placed third in the National Poetry Slam and performed on Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam, which led him to write and perform one-man shows. In Letson's travels around the country, he realized that the America he was seeing on the news was far different from the one he was experiencing up close. In 2007, he competed in the Public Radio Talent Quest, where he pitched a show called State of the Re:Union that reflected the conversations he was having throughout the US. The show ran for five seasons and won a Peabody Award in 2014. In 2015, Letson helped create and launch Reveal, the nation's first weekly investigative radio show, which has won two duPont Awards and three Peabody Awards and been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize twice. He has also hosted the podcast Errthang; written and developed several TV shows with major networks, including AMC+'s Moonhaven and Apple TV+'s Monarch; and DC Comics recently released his series Mister Terrific: Year One.

250 years after her birth, Jane Austen is more popular than ever, with the publication of new editions of her novels and numerous new film adaptations in production. But what does it mean to read and edit Jane Austen today through the lens of colonialism, cartography, and race? Scholar Patricia A. Matthew, who recently edited new editions of three Austen novels, joins us to explore the ongoing fascination with Jane and share new research about the Regency era. How wealth from Caribbean sugar plantations and slavery shaped the world depicted in Austen's novels—and how today's readers can confront the economic and imperial histories embedded in Regency-era fiction. During her fellowship at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Patricia Matthew examined archival materials, including legal texts, maps, travel logs, and legal documents, to gain a better understanding of colonial sugar plantations in the Caribbean. She looked at how empire and enslavement wealth from the new world, slavery, and race informed (or didn't) the literature and visual culture of the 18th– and 19th–century Britainies.
