It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. Moisés Niñez Llegó a inicios de 2025 como refuerzo extranjero, y aunque ha sido parte de la selección nacional de Venezuela en tres ocasiones, en Francia encontró un nuevo desafío: jugar en un país donde la pelota caliente no es común. “Para mí significa orgullo”, dice, “porque llevamos esa pasión desde pequeños, porque nos la inculcan nuestros padres y abuelos. Y traerla a un país que no tiene esa cultura es muy importante para mí”. Entre dos mundos En Venezuela, Moisés estaba acostumbrado a estadios llenos. “Allá en cualquier juego pueden haber 150 o 200 personas. Aquí, no”, cuenta. La diferencia cultural la vivió de inmediato. Mientras que en Venezuela el béisbol es el deporte nacional, en Francia la pasión está en otro lado: el fútbol, el rugby o el ciclismo. Cuando el PSG ganó la Champions League, el país entero celebró durante días. En cambio, los partidos de béisbol en Savigny pasan casi en silencio. El béisbol en Francia no es profesional, pero sí está organizado. Desde 1924 se juega una liga nacional, con equipos repartidos en distintas ciudades. Hoy, según la Federación Francesa de Béisbol y Softbol, hay unos 13 mil jugadores registrados. De ellos, el 15% son latinoamericanos, y la mayoría, venezolanos. “No siempre fue así”, explica Elliot Fleys, director general de la Federación. “Hace unos años había más estadounidenses y asiáticos. Ahora la nacionalidad más representada en la liga es la venezolana”. Para equilibrar la competencia y garantizar el desarrollo local, existe una regla: de cada nueve jugadores en el campo, al menos siete deben haber sido formados en Francia. El objetivo es claro: que los clubes aprovechen la experiencia extranjera, pero que los jóvenes franceses tengan espacio para crecer. El proyecto de los Lions Los Lions de Savigny son un ejemplo de cómo los clubes se han adaptado a esa realidad. “Desde siempre intentamos contratar uno, dos o tres extranjeros cada temporada, según los recursos que tengamos”, dice Tom Dou, jugador del club. “Es una forma de perfeccionar el equipo y poder competir por el campeonato”. En la liga francesa nadie recibe salario: ni jugadores locales ni organizadores. La excepción son los extranjeros, a quienes los clubes cubren viaje, vivienda y un pago que puede parecer poco comparado con las grandes ligas, pero en un país donde el béisbol es minoritario y se debe a la autogestión, ese esfuerzo es significativo. Además de jugar con el equipo mayor, los refuerzos extranjeros también son contratados para entrenar a las divisiones menores. Así, jugadores como Moisés no solo refuerzan al club, también transmiten su experiencia a los niños franceses que empiezan a conocer el béisbol. “Los venezolanos llegan con otra mentalidad”, agrega Tom. “Para ellos el béisbol es la vida. En cambio, un estadounidense viene a Europa por un año, casi como un paréntesis antes de volver a una vida normal. Por eso creo que aquí apostamos más por los latinos porque dan todo por el deporte”. Iván, el puente En 2019, Iván Acuña llegó desde Venezuela para jugar con los Lions. El club lo apoyó con los trámites de una visa de talento y decidió quedarse. Hoy es entrenador principal y jugador del equipo. “Cuando llegué no sabía nada de la gente, solo lo que veía por redes sociales”, recuerda. “Pero gracias a Dios todo salió como tenía que salir y aquí estamos desde entonces”. Desde 2021, Iván se convirtió en un vínculo entre Francia y Venezuela. “Ese año trajimos dos venezolanos y un dominicano. En 2022, otros dos venezolanos y un dominicano. En 2023, dos venezolanos más y un americano”, dice. Entre esos peloteros está Moisés, con quien el club adelanta trámites para que pueda quedarse en Francia más allá de esta temporada. Iván conoce bien lo que sus compatriotas aportan al béisbol francés: talento, intensidad, otra forma de jugar. Pero también reconoce lo que ellos aprenden aquí. “En Venezuela muchas veces entra el negocio, el dinero, las firmas. Aquí en Francia la gente juega por amor. Lo hacen porque les encanta, y eso es muy bonito”. La diferencia, dice Iván, resume el intercambio: los venezolanos traen su experiencia y ambición, mientras que en Francia descubren otra manera de vivir el juego, más ligera, más apasionada. Esa mezcla se siente en los entrenamientos. Antes de empezar, venezolanos y franceses se reúnen en el campo. Entre bromas y risas, algunos franceses se animan a hablar en español, y la barrera del idioma se rompe en medio del juego. Para Moisés, esas escenas significan más que un simple partido. “He aprendido a tenerle mucho amor al juego y ahora le tengo muchísimo más gracias a ellos”, dice. “Porque ellos están aquí por amor. Al final, en Savigny, entre voces en francés y en español, el béisbol se convierte en un idioma común. Ani proviene de una familia de siete hijos, seis mujeres y un hombre. Su padre, gerente general de una compañía de productos lácteos, les inculcó valores como el liderazgo, la empatía y la innovación. Bajo su dirección, la compañía, que inicialmente solo producía mantequilla, se consolidó como una de las más importantes del sector lácteo en Perú. Ani considera que su padre, con su arduo trabajo y dedicación, fue una gran fuente de inspiración. Se siente afortunada de haber crecido con esos valores. El liderazgo que Ani describe la llevó a convertirse en escritora y a obtener el International Latino Book Award con su primer libro, “Nos vemos en el purgatorio”. Ya no somos solo peruanos, por ejemplo, en mi caso, tengo muchas más cosas en común con alguien de Venezuela que con alguien de mi país. Después de treinta y siete años en Estados Unidos, Ani considera relevante este tipo de literatura. En ocasiones, deseamos emular a alguien de nuestro país de origen; sin embargo, nuestra identidad se ha visto enriquecida por la interacción con diversas culturas, no solo en Estados Unidos, sino también a través de nuestros hijos que crecen en este país y nos influyen. Mi literatura refleja esa influencia multicultural, similar a la deliciosa comida fusión peruana que combina elementos de la cultura china y japonesa, explica Ani. Ani agradece a Lorena Mora-Mowry por la entrevista, ya que “es muy difícil. A veces, cuando uno se siente solo, no siente que está empujando el Titanic. But before Shakespeare transformed English drama, Marlowe had already done so—with Tamburlaine the Great and the introduction of blank verse to the stage. As Stephen Greenblatt argues in his new biography, Dark Renaissance: The Dangerous Times and Fatal Genius of Shakespeare's Greatest Rival, virtually everything in the Elizabethan theater can be seen as “pre- and post-Tamburlaine.” Shakespeare learned from Marlowe, borrowed from him, and even tried to outdo him. Beyond his theatrical innovation, Marlowe was a poet, provocateur, and likely spy whose turbulent life was cut tragically short. In this episode, Greenblatt explores Marlowe's audacious works, his entanglements with power and secrecy, and his lasting influence on Shakespeare and the stage. You may know Al Letson as a journalist—he's the host of the popular investigative podcast Reveal. Before that, he created and hosted the public radio show State of the Re:Union. But Letson is also an actor, writer, playwright, and poet. His play Julius X: A Re-envisioning of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare kicks off Folger Theatre's 2025-26 season. Julius X isn't an adaptation of Julius Caesar — it's a new play that borrows from Shakespeare's language, characters, and plot to tell a different story. In Letson's play, Julius X is a fictionalized version of Malcolm X. The play mixes lines from Shakespeare with Letson's original poetry and songs. It expands the roles of Shakespeare's female characters, as well as that of Cinna the poet. Letson discusses the origin story of Julius X - a hint: it involves an audition, his lifelong love for Malcolm X, and the lessons he learned as an artist from Bill Moyers' series, The Language of Life: A Festival of Poets. Born in New Jersey, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, at age 11 and, as a teenager, began rapping and producing hip-hop records. By the early 1990s, he had fallen in love with the theater, becoming a local actor and playwright, and soon discovered slam poetry. In 2000, Letson placed third in the National Poetry Slam and performed on Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam, which led him to write and perform one-man shows. In Letson's travels around the country, he realized that the America he was seeing on the news was far different from the one he was experiencing up close. In 2007, he competed in the Public Radio Talent Quest, where he pitched a show called State of the Re:Union that reflected the conversations he was having throughout the US. The show ran for five seasons and won a Peabody Award in 2014. In 2015, Letson helped create and launch Reveal, the nation's first weekly investigative radio show, which has won two duPont Awards and three Peabody Awards and been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize twice. He has also hosted the podcast Errthang; written and developed several TV shows with major networks, including AMC+'s Moonhaven and Apple TV+'s Monarch; and DC Comics recently released his series Mister Terrific: Year One.

Rosa's directing work spans from Shakespeare to modern classics and contemporary plays. Throughout her career she has created work independently through self-producing, and in 2006 she co-founded upstart crow collective a company that produces classical plays with diverse casts of women and non-binary people. With upstart crow, she has directed King John, Bring Down the House, Richard III, Titus Andronicus, and Coriolanus. She is committed to creating ambitious productions of classical work featuring women, non-binary, and BIPOC artists. As Interim Artistic Director of Northwest Asian American Theatre, Rosa produced a range of Asian American performances, including: A-Fest, an international performance festival; Traces, a world premiere multi-disciplinary, multi-media, international collaborative work. She was also a Resident Director and Artistic Director of the Second Company at New City Theater, where she directed and produced various classical and contemporary plays. Rosa has been a faculty member at Seattle University and has also taught at The Old Globe University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program, Hong Kong University, Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, and Cornish College for the Arts. Rosa holds an MFA in Directing from the Yale School of Drama and a BA in Theatre and Psychology from Bucknell University.
