Free Range with Mike Livermore
S2E16. Jessica Locke on Buddhism and Environmental Engagement

On this episode of Free Range, host Mike Livermore is joined by Jess Locke, an associate professor of philosophy at Loyola University, Maryland. She studies Buddhism, Western psychology, and cross-cultural philosophy. Locke's interest in Buddhism is both personal and scholarly. She has a longstanding contemplative practice, and when she began her PhD program in philosophy at Emory, her goal was to engage with Buddhism from a Western philosophical perspective. Locke discusses how her work as a philosopher working with Buddhist ideas differs from how scholars in religious studies departments approach some of the same material. For Locke, religious studies scholars often take a historiographical and anthropological perspective on religious traditions, whereas she is interested in using philosophy to interrogate the ideas in a more general way. (0:00-10:59). Locke then discusses the difference between cultural appropriation and cross-cultural engagement when approaching Buddhist traditions. Over the past several decades, a mutual process of exchange across Buddhist and non-Buddhist traditions -- especially in the West -- has opened up. This exchange has created a new frontier in the long history of Buddhism, which has spent centuries traveling, adapting to and blending in with different histories and cultural contexts. One important recent thread in Buddhism focuses on social engagement and how Buddhist principles like interdependence and impermanence to contemporary social issues like environmentalism. Some see this as distorting traditional Buddhism, while others argue Buddhism must adapt to new circumstances. (10:59-38:50). The conversation wraps up with the contrast between Western and Eastern ethics. Locke explains how in Western culture, there is a larger focus on obligations and rights. For Locke, Buddhism is more concerned about ethical reflection and transformation than articulating a set of universal rules of conduct. In the environmental context, that might mean focusing on the relationship humans have with the environment rather than specifying the correct way to approach any given environmental problem. That said, Buddhism does not automatically lead to ethical behavior, as seen in some historical and contemporary examples like Japanese Zen nationalism and the persecution of Rohingya in Myanmar. There can be gaps between doctrine and how ideas manifest in society. Overall, Buddhism offers resources for rethinking the relationship between humans and nature, but does not represent a magic solution to ethical issues (38:50-1:02:06).

Outside of the land of the long white cloud, The Beths were somewhat of a well-kept secret up until about this time last year. With the release of their debut album, Future Me Hates Me, the Auckland band became an international commodity and one of the quickest rising indie-rock bands of 2018. They now have support slots with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and Bloc Party under their belts, not to mention a string of sold-out gigs both at home and across the pond. Before all of that, though, Liz Stokes and Jonathan Pierce were just awkward indie kids trying to figure out where they fit in. They tell stories from all across their still-blossoming career here, before taking to the stage at the Lansdowne in Sydney. The Beths are touring nationally in March and April, playing theatre shows with The Smith Street Band and headliner club shows with Jess Locke. This is a very special episode for us as it features songs from Jess Locke, High Tension, Smith Street Band, during the legendary ‘Gig of The Century’ fundraising show for the #keepcommunityradio movement that took place at Crowbar in Brisbane on the 5th of June, 2016. a very big thank you for everybody who got involved in this show. The bands who dedicated their time, the venue who dedicated their business, and the patrons who donated their money. As you may be aware, The Federal Budget contains cuts of $1.4 million p.a., funding that currently keeps community radio stations like this one, broadcasting on digital radio in 5 capital cities. The good guys at The Smith Street Band helped organise this fundraising event and implemented a ‘pay what you feel’ payment model at the door, with all proceeds going to community radio. They managed to raise $3,500 on the day, and more importantly highlighted an important issue in our industry. The Smith Street Band: In only 5 years of existence The Smith Street Band have made a tremendous impact on the Australian music scene by revitalising the long forgotten genre that is a staple of our cultural identity; Pub Rock. Their raw punk rock sound with intelligent lyricism delivered in vocalist Wil Wagner's instantly recognisable, prominent and sharp Australian tone have made The Smith Street Band our new Pub Rock icons. High Tension: Coming from Collingwood in Victoria, High Tension are a brutal four piece that have been hitting it hard since their beginning in 2012. Fronted by the outright terrifying Jakarta born Karina Utomo, High tension will leave you in a dizzying state of disaster which is amplified ten fold during their live performances. Sounding like they’ve taken an influence from every possible style of heavy music and fused it together to make High Tension stand out in their own. They’ve released two albums so far through the Cooking Vinyl label, 2013’s ‘Death Beat’ and 2015’s ‘Bully’, both of which have received critical acclaim including ARIA award nominations, flawless reviews from music publications, and even the tick of approval from master of hardcore himself, Henry Rollins. The powerful thud behind the drum kit, with pounding fuzzed out bass lines, sharp erratic guitar, and the unpredictable howls, screams and slurs on the vocals make High Tension a band worth checking out. Jess Locke Band: Starting off as a solo project in 2009 and consisting of only her voice and acoustic guitar, Jess Locke recorded her first album ‘In the Bedroom’ literally in her bedroom, true DIY style. Over the years since, she has released another four DIY acoustic albums as well as a live album from The Old Bar in Melbourne. But in 2014 Jess decided to switch up her playing styles and bring in a few other elements like drums, percussion, bass, ukulele and even some good ol electric guitar. The lo-fi sounds of her DIY recordings, simple and effective melodies and blissful delivery of her sad girl lyricism create a powerful sound of her own that makes for very comfortable listening. Her latest track ‘Paper Planes’ was released at the start of June and is the first taste of her next album due for recording later in the year. All sets were Recorded at Crowbar on the 5th of June, 2016 by Branko Cosic. All sets mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 3rd July 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.

Avoca Beach is a quaint little hideaway on the central coast of New South Wales. It's where Jess Locke was raised and subsequently began playing music, leading her through open mic nights, grindcore shows, dog parks and roundabouts. It seems wherever Locke goes, she's got a whole new group of admirers watching on - and when you write songs as sweet and charming as hers, it's easy to see why this happens. With some time to kill before the final day of the Poison City Weekender, Jess had a quick and informative chat about her music and her DIY ethics.
