In which The Curmudgeons travel back to sleazy, sweaty streets of Los Angeles to celebrate the music emanating from the City of Angeles. On one end, you had the burgeoning glam metal scene, a parade of excess and depravity in leather, chains and spandex--and some glorious, decadent riffage. On the other end, you had the DIY punk underground, led by hardcore punk stalwarts Black Flag and their SST label. You also had quirkier bands like The Minutemen and X lurking beneath the surface. A rockin' time was had by all. We explore it all intensely.    Enjoy the music of early '80s L.A. by accessing our special Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/61bZCVO8Mu2WVJE2Q7NyZO?si=3ffe4c45856b48b7   Here's a handy navigation companion to this episode.   (00:52 - 03:59) - Arturo Andrade sets the parameters for our discussion of Los Angeles rock in the early '80s   (06:24 - 18:00) - The Parallel Universe, featuring reviews of new music from Zzzahara and Mdou Moctar   (18:59 - 53:02) - Christopher O'Connor covers the glam metal scene of the Sunset Strip, placing emphasis on Ozzy Osbourne and Randy Rhoads, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue and Rattt   (54:09 - 01:46:37) - Arturo covers the L.A. punk underground, placing emphasis on Black Flag, The Minutemen, X and The Gun Club   Join our Curmudgeonly Community today! facebook.com/groups/curmudgeonrock   Hosted on Podbean! curmudgeonrock.podbean.com   Subscribe to our show on these platforms: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-curmudgeon-rock-report/id1551808911   https://open.spotify.com/show/4q7bHKIROH98o0vJbXLamB?si=5ffbdc04d6d44ecb   https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/5fea16f1-664e-40b7-932e-5fb748cffb1d/the-   Co-produced and co-hosted by The Curmudgeons - Arturo Andrade and Christopher O'Connor

Roestig. Hoe debieler hoe beter! The Tuareg singer and guitarist Mdou Moctar is from Niger, and his music career began with his songs being shared across mobile phone trading networks in West Africa. Now, as an ambassador of the Agadez sound, he plays his songs on the world's biggest music stages, including Coachella, and, coming soon, Bonnaroo and Glastonbury. Moctar and his band combine rock and psychedelia, often in the "Desert Blues" style of loping and sometimes accelerating threes. Mdou Moctar's latest album is called Funeral for Justice, and features his most fiery guitar playing yet. He and his band are here, to stretch out and play this perhaps trancey music for staying lifted, in-studio.  They play at Bowery Ballroom on June 25 and at Warsaw in Brooklyn on June 26.  1. Mdocu Moctar's “Funeral for Justice” is a blend of desert blues and sociopolitical commentary about his West African home country of Niger.  French President Emmanuel Macron has called for snap elections after far-right victories over the weekend. What's behind his risky strategy? An Orange County judge temporarily halted University of California academic workers' strike. They walked off the job in response to the UC system's response to pro-Palestinian demonstrations. The U.S. has spent millions on counterterrorism in West Africa since 9/11, but poverty and unrest are leading to military takeovers and the growth of Al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates.

On the May 3 episode of New Music Friday, NPR Music's Hazel Cills and WRTI's Nate Chinen discuss the week's essential new albums, including Radical Optimism, from the dance-pop superstar Dua Lipa. The songs on Radical Optimism are mostly in the vein of Dua Lipa's earlier work, but that itself might be reason to keep a militantly sunny attitude: A parade of hits from her last album, Future Nostalgia, proved to have incredible staying power — "Levitating" hung around in the top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 chart for nearly a year — and she contributed to last year's cultural juggernaut Barbie with "Dance the Night." Still, Hazel and Nate say the new album offers hints of a few surprising artistic developments in her sound.Radical Optimism isn't the only album out this week that demands attention. New records by the inimitable folk songwriter Jessica Pratt and the always ambitious jazz maestro and saxophonist Kamasi Washington focus their own sounds in new and highly rewarding ways. Steven and Ian begin today's episode by catching up with "Euphoria," the diss track that Kendrick Lamar unleashed on Drake this week. Did Kendrick really confuse The Sixth Sense star Haley Joel Osment with Texas televangelist Joel Osteen? Looks like it! (0:30) They also check in with the buzzy Sabrina Carpenter pop hit "Espresso," which has signaled the annual (tiresome) conversation about the song of the summer. (11:14)Then they transition to a conversation about Local Natives, the LA band who recently lost one of their founding members. Steven and Ian recap the group's career and comment on the enduring popularity of early 2010s indie stars. (17:26) From there, they discuss three artists who Steven's Fantasy Albums team — Jessica Pratt, Mdou Moctar, and Kamasi Washington — who put out new albums today. Sessa - "Vento a Favor" a 2023 single on Mexican Summer São Paulo-based musician Sessa returns with his first new single since last year's enchanting LP Estrela Acesa. The track is co-produced by Brazilian artist Biel Basile and American musician Mikey Coltun, who also plays bass in Mdou Moctar.  "'Vento a Favor' started as a track meant to be on Estrela Acesa," he tells Stereogum. "It was recorded, mixed, and mastered in the same sessions as the whole LP but somewhere along the way, when putting the pieces together, I started to feel that its energy was different from the story I was trying to tell with the record. The track was a bit too sure of its force and movement forward, outwards, while Estrela Acesa's gesture was something more of an inward look, a whisper to the soul. But you know, nothing wrong with that, breathing goes both in and out." Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
