On Sunday, October 17, 2021, Heidi Planck, a 39-year-old divorced mother of one left the townhome that she rented in the Palms area of West LA near Culver City and got into her silver Range Rover. She brought along her Labradoodle dog, Seven, and set out for her son, Bond's football game in Downey, California, about 17 miles away. But Heidi left the game early, and after texting with her son that evening, suddenly went radio silent. Her last known whereabouts were at a luxury high rise residential building called the Hope and Flower in downtown LA at 6:30 that night and then Heidi Planck simply...vanished. Her dog was found by residents of the Hope and Flower building on the 29th floor wandering aimlessly. Heidi Planck has never been heard from or seen again. Joseph McStay and his wife, Summer, along with their two little boys, Gianni and Joe Jr had just moved into a new house in November of 2010. On February 4, 2011, Joseph left to go have lunch with a business partner and friend named Chase Merritt in the early afternoon. By February 13, when Joseph's mother had not heard from him, she had his brother, Michael, go check on the family. What Michael found in their home was fruit rotting on the counter and a half eaten bowl of popcorn on the table. The family's two dogs were out in the yard. It was as if, on that day, February 4, 2011, the whole McStay family had simply...vanished.Show Notes:https://blood-money.simplecast.com/https://dateline-missing-in-america.simplecast.com/https://www.oxygen.com/killer-motive/season-2/episode-1/the-mcstay-family-mystery

Send us a Text Message. As a teenager, Joe Vargas Sr. immigrated from Mexico to Orange County, CA and started his life there. After working various jobs, he learned English and received his high school diploma. He got a degree in Police Science and eventually joined Stranton PD after eventually ending up at Santa Ana PD. Being it's first Hispanic officer, his unconventional approach to policing earned the respect of the local Latino population. This method later became known as "community policing" and has been adopted by many police agencies throughout the United States. Joe Sr. left a legacy in his community but also in his family, where two of his sons and two of his nephews also served careers in law enforcement. In this episode, I interview Joe Jr. about his father's amazing life and about his own career with the Anaheim Police Department. If you have any questions, comments or ideas for future episodes, please contact me at: RememerMyNamePodcast@gmail.com

In this series, I explore how the significant influences and archetypal events experienced in our first 14 years of life set the stage for what is most meaningful throughout our adult years. In times of transition, a voice wonders: who am I at the soul level, at my essence? Our earliest resonant moments of awe–what lit us up–offer direct access into the root system of our original belonging. In episode three, I share my story of learning the meaning of love as I grew up alongside my brother Joe Jr., who was born with Down syndrome in the 1960s, and how our relationship has evolved over the years. I am joined in conversation with Molly Nocon, CEO of Noah Homes, a groundbreaking residential community in San Diego that provides exceptional care and choices for adults with developmental disabilities, the home where my brother Joe resides today. In the 1960s, a movement swept the nation challenging the stigma around so-called “mental retardation.” For decades, parents were guided to place their children with special needs in institutions–but no more! I discuss how my mother found her voice in advocating for those born with intellectual disabilities as did my otherwise stoic father, a special agent for the FBI. Joe Jr. held the magic key to open peoples' hearts. He exemplified an unfettered sense of joy. Witnessing his love, yet knowing he was deemed “the other,” I felt compelled to share Joe's story. My brother, who loved to sing but could not speak, taught me that we communicate in many ways. He inspired my coming-of-age memoir FBI Girl, a love story about family that felt like a part of my personal, divine contract. In this episode, I also speak with Molly Nocon, CEO of Noah Homes in San Diego, California. Molly is also a sister to a brother born with Down syndrome. She shares stories of her early years and family dynamics and how these through-threads inspire her work today. Noah Homes, set on a beautiful, peaceful campus, exemplifies leadership and caring. It is also groundbreaking in its visionary role around memory care, as many adults living with Down syndrome are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in their later years. Molly speaks to the importance of family and community support and advocacy at the governmental level to maintain the commitment to caring for an exceptional population. With continued heart-centered advocacy, this episode is an inspiration to how we all can contribute to a more loving future for all citizens. We don't normally think of Philadelphia as being an oil town, but the Point Breeze refinery in South Philadelphia, easily visible from the Pratt Bridge on your ride to the airport, dominated the skyline for many decades with its storage tanks and distilling towers. Born in the middle of Pennsylvania's Titusville oil boom in the northwest corner of the state, J. Newton Pew established Sun Oil in 1890. After its move to Philadelphia, Newton's sons Howard and Joe Jr. ran the company for decades and established a refinery at Marcus Hook and the Sun Shipbuilding Company in Chester. The Pews are known today for their charitable contributions throughout the city. The Pew Mausoleum at Laurel Hill West holds several generations of this prosperous philanthropic family. Learn about oil, crude and refined, shipbuilding, philanthropy, and even some political intrigue in this month's episode of “All Bones Considered: Laurel Hill Stories – Philadelphia and Oil” from wherever you listen to podcasts.

It started with Jennifer, the third child of Marybeth and Joe, joining siblings Barbara and Joe Jr in December of 1971. Little Jennifer was not a healthy child and died from meningitis on January 3, 1972. This news hit Marybeth and Joe hard, especially Mary, who had just lost her father in October. Perhaps the stress ignited a slow-burning fire into a firestorm, or maybe it was always inside and had not yet appeared until now. Whatever the reason, there would be a trail of death with one person responsible for them all. Yet time and time again, the person was left to do it again and again.
