Sync into the Earth
12. Embrace your wild side - Rewilding cities

Sync into the Earth

Episode produced by Maia Mortimer, Victoria Mushka, and Annika Wong In this episode of Sync into the Earth, we discuss the concept of “wild cities” and what it means for the future of conservation. As urban sprawl continues to cover our Earth, we need to start thinking about how we can incorporate conservation into cities rather than treating it as a separate issue. Wild cities, an idea based on “rewilding”, aim to redesign urban infrastructure to support coexistence with nature. We delve into numerous studies as we try to answer the question, “What's so great about wild cities?”. We discuss wild cities' importance for both human and environmental health. We talk about the major challenges that come with creating wild cities, and how they can be addressed. To help us dive deeper into this topic, we speak with Usman Haque, a renowned architect and artist whose work incorporates the natural environment, urban technology, and human interaction. Haque talks about strategies to incorporate nature into the city through his experience working as the creative director of Re: Wild Royal Docks, where he seeks to connect people and nature (like with talking trees!). In episode 260 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked back in with journalist, presenter and DJ, Amber Haque. We first checked in with Amber in JCIP #177 to discuss her brilliant and powerful BBC documentary series, 'Hometown: A Killing', series two, which focused on the murder of teenager Yousef Makki. We also discussed her workplace anxiety and ADHD symptoms she exhibited in childhood and adolescence. Since then, Amber has been a very busy bee. She has just joined as the new co-host of an existing true crime podcast on BBC Sounds called 'Bad People'. She has also presented another fantastic documentary, this time a one-off programme on Channel 4 about the rise in diet pills in the UK, as part of the channel's UNTOLD series. Since we last spoke, Amber is working with a life coach to manage her ADHD symptoms and work out positive coping strategies and tools so she can thrive as a journalist alongside it. In this episode we discuss: the state of the journalism industry and how it's even more precarious and unstable than it was before Covid-19, a deep dive into her film on diet pills through a mental health lens, some of the stories she's covered on Bad People and the possible psychological reason why women in particular seem to love the true crime genre! For Amber's continued mental health journey, she got married in 2023 and we discuss the joys of it and the challenges of organising it. We also discuss her continued self-awareness around her ADHD and how she's trying to manage it better, as well as the stigma she still feels around disclosing it in the workplace. The last remaining Denny's in San Francisco has shuttered after nearly 25 years. The 24-hour diner chain's 816 Mission St. location closed Aug. 1, franchise owner Chris Haque told SFGATE. As of Aug. 12, the Denny's sign has been painted over. “We're the only store left, and we operated until the last day that we could,” Haque said. “The cost of doing business is tremendous. There's vandalism, and people come and eat and walk away, and there's no one to stop them.” Haque claimed that dining and dashing was a big issue at the Denny's near Union Square, which he said cut into the restaurant's profit margins. He also pointed to the lack of conventions in San Francisco over the past few years, which the restaurant typically depended on for business. Haque used to be the franchise owner of a Denny's location in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf as well, which closed in 2019, and still runs a Denny's in Tacoma, Washington.

Martin Luther King Jr. spoke during three known visits to Minnesota. King touched on topics ranging from colonialism to the war in Vietnam. The first of King's speeches in the state happened more than 70 years ago, but the messages still resonate in the places he visited.A sermon to pastors in St. Paul Martin Luther King Jr. first came to Minnesota on Jan. 22, 1951, at the request of Clifford Ansgar Nelson, who was serving as head pastor of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in St. Paul.  The current pastor, Bradley Schmeling, says he imagines it was a tight fit when 1,400 people came to see the civil rights activist.“We have a picture of his presence here that hangs right outside of our sanctuary,” Schmeling said. “Knowing our sanctuary, I can't imagine how that many people crammed into that room to hear him speak at the time.” The impact of King's 1951 sermon, delivered to a crowd attending the Minnesota Pastors Conference, still resonates.“Lutheranism is the whitest denomination in the country,” Schmeling said. “White supremacy still shaped so much of our experience here in Minnesota.” While the congregation is still majority white, Schmeling says King's legacy has informed the Church's work in social justice, especially when it comes to reconciliation work with Native communities. “If the church isn't working on this, speaking about it, it's hard to say that we would be preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.”A full schedule in Mankato King's next visit to Minnesota was on Nov. 12, 1961, when he delivered multiple speeches in Mankato.King delivered two sermons at Centenary United Methodist Church, as well as a speech at Mankato West High, focusing on the need to end the notion of superior or inferior races, calling out those using the Christian Bible as justification.“It's a strange thing how men often believe things that are evil in context,” King said, according to a transcript from his speech at Mankato West High School. “They go to find some religious and biblical justification for it. And so, they lift things out of context and try to argue or to justify a particular belief that they have.”MNSU Mankato professor Jameel Haque was involved in a documentary about King's 1961 visit.  “A delegation of pastors from Mankato were at a national conference where they met Martin Luther King Jr,” Haque explained. “They were very impressed by him, and they really wanted somebody to come to Mankato to bring a different kind of message.” Haque added King's speech in Mankato came at a time when the Civil Rights Movement was picking up steam.  “Having this legacy here in town,” Haque said. “It's a big deal.” A lovely April day in St. Paul The last known time King visited Minnesota was in 1967. The civil rights leader spoke at the University of Minnesota about his opposition to the Vietnam War. It was a year before he was assassinated.“As he moved further through the movement, he really did become more radical,” said G. Phillip Shoultz III, who is the Associate Artistic Director of “Vocal Essence” choral group. “Maybe radical is not even the right word — more pointed and direct in expressing opposition to things that he thought were fundamentally wrong.”Shoultz has curated the University of Minnesota's Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemoration program for six years, and the university's celebration of the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington.Shoultz says he takes this time of year to revisit the teachings of King, which he believes are especially important today. Shoultz points to King's theological belief of the “Beloved Community”.It is a “world where I can see you and you can see me and we don't have to agree on all issues, but I can hear you, you can hear me,” Shoultz said. “But at the heart, we both want what's best for each other.” Shoultz wonders what role King might have played in current national conversations and in moments of divisiveness.“I think he would find a way to bridge that gap with his words,” Shoultz said. “Inviting everyone to come in and listen and to consider how we are all complicit in some of the problems that we face.”

In this episode, we are excited to introduce our guest, Dr. Sapna Shah-Haque, a board-certified Internal Medicine physician. She was born and raised in Kansas and attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at KU-Wichita as well. After experiencing burnout herself and witnessing other physician colleagues go through similar struggles, she developed a passion for investigating the different aspects of burnout in the healthcare industry. While she acknowledges that the system is broken and needs to change, this podcast is a way to reach out to physicians and bring attention to what is, unfortunately, not an isolated situation.   In this episode, you will hear:  What burnout is and how it is defined by doctors and the WHO.  The ways in which the medical system is counterintuitive.  Reasons physicians do not seek help for mental health.  The epidemic of physician suicides and how the system is built against doctors from medical school.  Listen to the nurses, doctors, and other healthcare workers. They will tell you what they need. It is up to the institutions and hospitals to listen and understand.  Advice for medical students and residents to avoid burnout.  Pros and cons of technology to physician burnout.  Better supporting physicians as patients, friends, family, and members of society.      Dr. Sapna Shah-Haque, MD, is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician.
