Joe Penny, Lecturer in Global Urbanism at the UCL Urban Laboratory in London, talks with Álvaro Sevilla-Buitrago about his alternative history of capitalist urbanization through the lens of the commons. Against the Commons underscores how urbanization shapes the social fabric of places and territories, lending awareness to the impact of planning and design initiatives on working-class communities and popular strata. Projecting history into the future, it outlines an alternative vision for a postcapitalist urban planning, one in which the structure of collective spaces is defined by the people who inhabit them. Álvaro Sevilla Buitrago is Associate Professor of Planning History and Theory, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (http://multipliciudades.org/). Blending critical spatial theory and urban history, his research traces the role of planning in the genealogy of capitalist territorial formations, understanding it as a device for the dispossession and reconfiguration of autonomous modes of social reproduction. This interview is a part of the 2023 Festival of Urbanism Book Club Podcast series

Quaid returns to period pieces in Our Winning Season, not that you'd necessarily know from the production. This failed attempt to combine a Porky's-esque sex farce with a high-school-sports roman a clef AND the blight of Vietnam isn't so much bad as airless and dull, and on top of that, it's both not very Quaidy and TOO Quaidy somehow. Tonal whiplash and fern-bar soundtrack cues: it's Episode 5! SHOW NOTES Want to help defray the costs of the pod, like getting a print of that Baretta episode made? On this edition of Off the Clock, producer Emily Aiken visits the Pennytown Freewill Baptist Church, a small rural churchhouse that holds a world of history and memories of the families who formed and lived in Pennytown. The town was founded by freed slave Joe Penny in 1871. Today, family members like Virginia Huston congregate at the church to reflect on their past and keep the spirit alive for their descendants. You can see the full story here . Also, on this edition: Producer Olivia Love wandered through campus and discovered that the quads and crannies were packed full of Missouri high school musicians competing at the 68th annual music festival of the Missouri State High School Activities Association, or MSHAA. She captured the sounds in an audio postcard.
