This week in our history of rock music, the UK in the mid '50s is swept up in the skiffle craze, and in the USA, Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis follow in Elvis's footprints.
There's an echo in the well of Americana and it reverberates from tradition and some of the early songsmiths and blues masters who delivered the blues proper through the depths of the past century of America's music. We'll be pulling some of the classic blues covers of songs composed by just a small collection of the great blues masters: Charley Patton, Muddy Waters, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lonnie Johnson, Blind Blake and beyond in this week's episode. There is seldom enough time to make a dent in only two hours but we'll do our best with covers from some of the inheritors like BB King, Carl Perkins, Bob Dylan, Jorma Kaukonen and a couple dozen others. We're excavating some deeper roots this week and then tilling the airwaves with freshly turned songs of the earth; a landscape of blues cutting a deep swath across the musical landscape of the past 100 years. Celebrating blues and those who brought it home this week on KOWS Community Radio.
Author Jeff Apter joins us again to discuss his excellent new book, Carl Perkins: The King of Rockabilly. In the annals of rock history, Carl often gets overlooked as colleagues like Elvis, Jerry Lee, and Johnny take center stage. He'd probably be fine with that. But his story is fascinating. Writing "Blue Suede Shoes" and being a key influence on the Beatles kept him viable his entire life. Jeff tells a beautiful story of a wonderful man with a fascinating history that many of us may not know that much about. Enjoy! www.jeffapter.com.au
This episode contains: Daylight savings hit, and we're all just trying to cope. Real Life (or Whatever That Is) Devon Saw Apocalyptica in Dallas—three cellists and a drummer, blasting Metallica covers. It was energetic, intense, and apparently, the drums were a standout. Nita Strauss opened, because Devon only goes to shows with legendary guitarists involved. Also, he went to a production of Cheaper by the Dozen, which was… a different vibe entirely. Steven got into Marvel Crisis Protocol, which he describes as similar to Shatterpoint. More importantly, he won his first game against his friend Greg, which obviously means he's an expert now. Devon saw Wicked and was deeply underwhelmed. (Expect fan outrage.) Ben went to a production of Million Dollar Quartet, which tells the story of a legendary jam session between Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. If you don't know what that is, here's a Wikipedia link: Million Dollar Quartet. Future or Now (Depends on Your Perspective) Remember Me! Steven presents a real-life prequel to Fallout. Sweden is burying its radioactive nuclear waste in sealed bedrock for 100,000 years. The challenge? How do we make sure future generations don't dig it up and think, “Oh cool, ancient glowing rocks!” Scientists have some ideas, and they range from the practical to the deeply sci-fi. Check it out: Science Daily | Highly radioactive nuclear waste: how to keep it from oblivion A PDF of the actual Key Information File CALM DOWN, JEEZ Ben brings us a podcast from NPR and the TED Radio Hour about how we handle emotions, featuring insights from neuroscientist Ethan Kross on managing emotional overwhelm. Science-backed coping mechanisms? Yes, please. An example: talking to yourself in the second person to coach yourself. Listen here: NPR - Ethan Kross on Managing Emotions Also, Ben's dog has got Diabetes insipidus, which, despite the name, has nothing to do with regular diabetes. More on that here: Diabetes Insipidus Book Club: Continuing coverage of the novella To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers. This week, our crew traveled to Mirabilis (also the name of the chapter we read)—a planet of ice, deep-sea creatures, and they brought with them some existential dread. Some key themes: Survival of the fittest (but at what cost?) The emotional toll of killing an animal for survival Missing communications from Earth The sheer terror of the unknown Devon asked, “Are they vegan?”—a question inspired by his recent reading of Animal Liberation Now. Also, sometimes Devon's not in the mood for fiction, but Becky Chambers' writing is worth it. Next week: the chapter “Opera” (same book, different planet).

Today, we’re celebrating what would have been the 90th birthday of Elvis Presley. There’s been a lot written and said about The King over the years, but in this episode, we’re going to let Elvis do a lot of the talking. We have some amazing audio from the early years. Most of these clips are from the mid to late ‘50s – and they capture a lot of the excitement – and the freshness of Elvis Plus we have clips from the people who were there… - his label mate Carl Perkins talks about touring with Elvis and Johnny Cash before any of them were well known. - Dick Clark describes how Elvis was seen as a sort of villain compared to the likes of Pat Boone - Ed Sullivan explains why Elvis could only be shown from the waist up on his third visit to his show. - His collaborators in the late ‘60s explain the stories behind his comeback hits. All of these clips are from around the time that these events happened – so they capture history as history was being made. Plus, we’ll hear from some of the people who worked with Elvis over the years who will tell the stories behind some of his biggest songs. Also, Tom asks Christopher to explain how a trip to Graceland in 1987 with a bunch of Elvis fans led to the creation of “Black Velvet”, which of course was a massive worldwide hit for his musical partner and friend Alannah Myles. And best of all, we hear from the two people who knew Elvis best – his daughter Lisa Marie (in a 2005 chat) and his widow Priscilla (from 2006). Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. It is in the Top 20% of worldwide podcasts based on the number of listeners in the first week.
Lou, Mark and Perry talk drummer Hal Blaine and listen to Carl Perkins playing "Matchbox" plus Wanda Jackson rocks the place and talk of the remix of "Goats Head Soup" from The Rolling Stones and music trivia and some funny vocal styles and lots more fun stuff
Support Breaking Walls at https://www.patreon.com/thewallbreakers It's a cold, rainy Sunday evening on January 8th, 1956. We're heading south on Riverside Drive in Manhattan's Upper West Side. On the air is NBC's Monitor with a New World Today discussion about the differences in American life in the past twenty years. The United States is changing. Psychiatry is on the rise as the cold war rages onward. The internal Red Scare has subsided, but Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said this week that the U.S. won't stop testing nuclear weapons, despite pleas from Pope Pius XII on Christmas Day. While nuclear fears are understandable, the U.S. government thinks the USSR's presence in emerging nations means they can't be trusted to follow suit and stop their own testing. In Ecuador today, five evangelical American Christian missionaries were speared to death by members of the Huaorani people after attempting to introduce Christianity to them. Meanwhile, Algeria is in the midst of a war for Independence between France and the Algerian National Liberation Front. It began in November of 1954 and by now it's considered the world's only active war of note. It's a complex conflict characterized by guerrilla warfare and the use of torture. Gunsmoke is far and away radio's highest-rated dramatic show. It airs on CBS Sunday evenings with a Saturday afternoon repeat broadcast. The combined rating of 6.5 means somewhere between six and seven million people are still tuning in from their homes. When factoring in car and transistor radios, nearly ten million people are listening. CBS remains the home for the top-rated prime-time shows. Our Miss Brooks is pulling a rating of 4.3, and both Edgar Bergen and Two For The Money are pulling a 3.9. Meanwhile, on daytime radio, CBS has the twelve highest-rated programs. So where am I heading? I'm a roving CBS producer. I've worked on both coasts, including with Norman MacDonell on Gunsmoke in Hollywood, but last year programming directors Guy Della Choppa and Howard Barnes sent me back home to New York. I'm heading to the City Center at 131 West 55th street. I'm to cover a preview of Shakespeare's King Lear starring Orson Welles. It features Viveca Lindfors and Geraldine Fitzgerald and begins at 8:30PM. I helped with Welles' Omnibus production of Lear on CBS-TV in October 1953. I had drinks with him last week. He kept raving about two things: Carl Perkins' new hit, “Blue Suede Shoes,” and friend Jack Johnstone's production of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Johnstone directed Welles' Almanac series from the west coast during World War II. I phoned Jack yesterday. He had this to say. Jack was sure to mention that this week's upcoming Dollar story would take place in New York. If all goes well, Orson might be interested in returning to network radio in some capacity. Welles is once again a father. His daughter Beatrice was born last November 13th. He's been looking for more stable projects and wants to get dinner after the performance. Lear doesn't officially open until Thursday the 12th. The City Center was built as The Mecca Temple and opened in 1923. It's part of a small section of galleries, apartments, and performing spaces, but development is possibly encroaching. Last April, The Mayor's Slum Clearance Committee, chaired by Robert Moses, was approved to designate the area just west in Lincoln Square for urban renewal. The residents, many of them Hispanic, have been protesting the decision, but Robert Moses usually gets his way.

Author Jeff Apter is back for his third appearance on the podcast. He's just released the book Carl Perkins: The King of Rockabilly. The definitive and fascinating biography of the musical trailblazer who wrote the classic “Blue Suede Shoes” and was the influence behind countless other legendary hits, a rock and roll legend in his own right, and the original rockabilly cat—Carl Perkins. The artists that are primarily covered in this podcast, the classic rock artists and bands from the mid 60s to mid 90s, are standing on the shoulders of the giants before them including Carl Perkins. A true pioneer, a groundbreaking guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Paul McCartney once said, “If there were no Carl Perkins, there would be no Beatles.” Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix performed and recorded his songs and became Carl's friends, collaborators, and champions. We're going to find out about Carl's early life in Tennessee, how music came into his life, his rise to prominence, along with the many tragedies in his life including a fateful car crash that stalled his career.Purchase a copy of Carl Perkins: The King of RockabillyVisit Jeff Apter's website Episode Playlist ---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe

When Chuck Mead was a young boy, he and his sister moved with their parents to Lawrence, Kansas. He got a drum kit as a gift when he was 12, and soon after started playing in the family's band. It was made up of his mom, his dad, his grandparents and uncles who played country and western, and Chuck would also sing songs by Carl Perkins and Elvis. An uncle taught Chuck how to play guitar and by high school, he was playing in bands with friends. He continued to play while attending The University of Kansas, still having a fondness for rockabilly and country, but was also listening to Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Springsteen and even the Ramones. His band, The Homestead Grays, recorded a couple of records and after college, Chuck moved to Nashville. He played in the window of Tootsie's Orchid Lounge and before long, he and Gary Bennett formed BR549. Crowds packed in to see them play Robert's on Lower Broadway. They were an enormous hit, and soon became famous worldwide. A few weeks after seeing him with his current band, The Stalwarts, I had the pleasure of talking with the extremely talented, and very very funny, Chuck Mead.Photo by Joshua Black Wilkins. Listen to the music of Quincy Jones and the masters of Indiana Avenue jazz. Quincy Jones was a legendary producer, musician, composer, and arranger. He died earlier this month at the age of 91. Jones worked with many of the biggest stars in popular music, producing and arranging music for iconic performers, including Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra. As a composer, Jones broke racial barriers in Hollywood, becoming one of the first Black musicians to score soundtracks for major films and television programs. During his historic career, Jones received many accolades, including 28 Grammys, an Emmy, a Tony, and seven Academy Award nominations. During his early years in music, Jones worked extensively, with musician from Indiana Avenue, including the Montgomery Brothers, Freddie Hubbard, David Baker, Pookie Johnson, Virgil Jones, J.J. Johnson, Carl Perkins, Leroy Vinnegar, and more. It's possible Jones himself played on the Avenue. From 1951 to 1953, Jones toured with the Lionel Hampton band as a trumpet player and arranger. During that time, the band played at Indiana Avenue's Sunset Terrace, on Thanksgiving Day of 1952. In the liner notes for the Wes Montgomery anthology “In the Beginning,” Jones recalled sleeping on Montgomery's floor when the Hampton band toured through Indianapolis.

Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Massapequa, New York, Phantom grew up listening to his parents' jazz records and began playing drums by the age of ten. He took lessons with Mousie Alexander, who played with Benny Goodman, studying jazz and working through books by Jim Chapin and Ted Reed. By the late 1970s, he was playing in bands with his childhood friend, bassist Lee Rocker. They soon joined forces with guitarist Brian Setzer to form Stray Cats.[ When performing with Stray Cats, Phantom did not sit behind a standard drum kit like most drummers, but instead opted to play in a standing position with a minimalist set-up of bass drum, snare drum, hi-hat, and crash cymbal. During downtime from Stray Cats, Phantom played in swing, rockabilly, and jump blues combo The Swing Cats with Rocker and ex-Polecats guitarist Danny B. Harvey,[6] as well as rockabilly and glam rock project Phantom, Rocker & Slick with Rocker and guitarist Earl Slick. In 1985, he appeared with Carl Perkins and a host of other musicians including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Dave Edmunds and Rosanne Cash for Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session in London, England. Phantom also played with Jerry Lee Lewis. He later formed Col. Parker with former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke, releasing the album Rock n Roll Music in 2001.[ Most recently, he has been involved in the eponymous roots-rock band Slim Jim's Phantom Trio; rock-and-roll supergroup Dead Men Walking with Kirk Brandon and Mike Peters, and Captain Sensible;[ and rockabilly supergroup The Head Cat with Danny B. Harvey and the late Motörhead vocalist and bassist Lemmy. He also hosts the Rockabilly Raveup show on Little Steven's Underground Garage. In March 2023, Barnes announced the supergroup The Barnestormers, featuring Barnes, Cheney, Phantom with Jools Holland and Kevin Shirley. A self-titled album was released on 26 May 2023. Marty Stuart has dedicated his life to playing and preserving old country music. During his 40-plus years as a solo artist, Marty has released more than 20 albums and racked up numerous honors, including five Grammys, and an induction into the Country Music Hall Of Fame. Marty started his career at the age of 12 playing mandolin in a gospel band. By 21, he'd joined Johnny Cash's touring band, and eventually became a solo artist who combined classic rockabilly sounds with bluegrass and cosmic country. His latest album has a sweeping, spacious feel that's meant to conjure up visions of desert horizons and endless stretches of two-lane highways. For today's episode, Bruce Headlam met up with Marty Stuart at Bridge Studios in Brooklyn. Marty shared stories about first going on the road with the Sullivan Family Gospel Singers, and the very first show he ever played backing Johnny Cash where Marty pretended to know how to play the fiddle. Marty also talks about how a star-studded studio session with Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis gave him the confidence to pursue a solo career in country music.
