Before the mainstreaming of Ellen and the hit show Will and Grace, soaps did their best to bring tenderness to LGBTQ+ storylines. That's the nature of the form: It gives room for anyone and everyone to be complex, fleshed out, loved and hated all at once. From supporting roles to legacy characters to complex depictions in their full humanity, from respectability politics to sometimes making missteps, soaps have found ways to evolve their depictions of queer life. Ryan Phillippe played a gay teen in the 1990s on One Life to Live. Eden Riegel played Bianca, Erica Kane's gay daughter in the 2000s on All My Children. Today, progress looks like a villain, according to Days of Our Lives actor Greg Rikaart. “I came on as the ‘gay villain,' if you will, and to me, that felt like the ultimate equality, in that I didn't have to just say the right thing and follow the rules in order to be palatable to the audience,” he said. “And when I would get blowback from some people … I would just argue all those things: That that is further pushing the envelope open by saying, ‘Yeah, we can be multifaceted. We don't all have to be good guys.' ”
Did you go out and see SINNERS yet? The Film School Janitors certainly did! (Well, half of them certainly did!) This is their review of Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's latest collaboration. Did you know that Michael B. Jordan got his start on TV's "All My Children"? It has nothing to do with this review, but it was something I just found out.

From Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee on The Guiding Light to the first Black super-couple, Jesse and Angie on All My Children, Black soap actors have been on the canvas. According to an executive at CBS, Black women overindex as soap watchers, which has led to the first new daytime soap in decades. Beyond the Gates debuted with a core Black family in February 2025. It's an exciting time to be a Black soap fan. Even though there's been Black representation, Black writers and actors have often had to push to be more than sidekicks, according to soap writer Shannon Peace. “You see the faces; they're there,” Peace said. “But what are the storylines? Why do we still feel often like they're being backgrounded or there being support staff, to prop [up] other characters or other families? And when I say other characters or other families, I mean white characters or white families.” Peace said she doesn't see that problem in primetime television, but it still exists in daytime. “I feel in primetime mode, for the most part, they've done away with a Black sidekick, with a Black friend — that Black best friend — and you have Black characters in meaningful front-facing roles that are driving story. I don't see that in daytime.” You can listen to this podcast episode by following “Making: Stories Without End” on Apple, Spotify, Pocket Casts, NPR One or wherever you get your podcasts. Episodes drop every Tuesday for six weeks starting April 8.

Irna Phillips created the cliff-hanger in broadcast storytelling and perfected the serial drama, first in radio, then on television. She mentored the creators of All My Children, One Life to Live, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. The latter two remain on television today. Phillips also created the television vixen, an archetype first seen on soap operas that still endures. Agnes Nixon and married couple William and Lee Phillip Bell worked for Phillips in Chicago. Nixon was head writer of The Guiding Light. In 1962, she wanted to do a cancer storyline, about how uterine cancer is curable if caught in time. Doctors said women proactively asked for pPap smears after watching the character Bert Bauer struggle with her health. The Bells also ushered the sexual revolution into soaps in the 1970s, with glitz and glamor and pushing the envelope on sexuality. Soap operas created complex and groundbreaking women-centered storylines. In 1964, Another World ran an abortion storyline. In 1971, All My Children's biggest vixen, Erica Kane, was a married pregnant model who didn't want to be a mother. That abortion storyline was disruptive because the character was not seen as the “right” woman to tell an abortion story. Rape storylines on soaps have played out for decades because the form allows real-time nuance with storytelling. Nothing is ever wrapped up in one “Very Special Episode.” The uniqueness of soaps, airing five days a week, allows for pioneering storytelling.

“The roles I've played on soap operas are infinitely superior to any roles I've played anywhere else. They are about women and women's stories. The men are just there to screw you -- or screw you over.” -- Dorothy LymanJust three chicks sitting around talking...Susan and Sharon clean house -- and air some dirty laundry -- with The Nanny director and Emmy-award winning actress Dorothy Lyman. You may know her as Opal Gardner from the long-running soap opera All My Children or as Naomi Oates Harper from Mama's Family. And it wasn't funny at all.” THERE'S THE DOOR: After directing three seasons of The Nanny, Dorothy says, “I never got another job directing a single moment of television. I spent many years thinking I'd done something terribly wrong. But it was because I was over 50 -- and I was a woman.”What do you do when Hollywood directing gigs go away? You buy a chicken farm in upstate New York and start writing plays, of course!ON CHANGE: “Change is where it's at. Nothing stays the same. Today's Guest is Meredith Patterson and she happens to be a very good friend of Scott's. They met another lifetime ago…waaaaaay back in December 1996 and got to perform together 8 shows a week on the US and Canadian tour of Singin' in the Rain. When the record button for this interview was pressed and when Meredith and Scott popped up on each others screens, they were so happy to see each other, they wound up talking and reminiscing for a while before they even talked about Meredith's career and the Disney stuff. Since they talked for so long about so many things, and since people have asked what doesn't make the Final Cut - what gets edited out of these interviews - what's going to happen is this - Part 1 is released today, Part 2 will come out next week, and the week after, a bonus episode of some of Meredith and Scott's personal conversation will come out, with Meredith's blessing. You'll hear these two friends laugh, reminisce about their time together, etc. On Broadway, Meredith is known for her incredible skills as a dancer both in balletic grace and tap dancing, and the New York Times compared her to the legendary Ginger Rogers. How's that for a compliment? She made her broadway debut in the Julie Taymor directed play The Green Bird. For those not familiar, Julie Taymor directed the Broadway musical, The Lion King. Meredith then lived the classic understudy's dream come true when she took over the starring role of Peggy Sawyer in the Tony Award Winning Revival of 42nd Street, where she made her Broadway musical debut. Meredith was also the first non-original principal to be recorded for posterity with the Lincoln Center Archives. When her Broadway contract was up, Meredith went on to star in the groundbreaking Moscow production of 42nd Street, where she was the first American actress to perform in an English-speaking production in Russia. Also on Broadway, she originated the role of Judy Haynes in Irving Berlin's White Christmas. Other theatre credits include A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden and The Boy Friend where she played the Julie Andrews role of Polly Browne under the direction of Julie Andrews. Her national tour credits include starring as Judy Haynes in White Christmas, Polly in Crazy For You, and Kathy Seldon in Singin' in the Rain. Her television career began with her hilarious role on Boston Legal in a 5 episode arch opposite Candace Bergen and Tom Selleck for Disney owned ABC. She also guest starred on Law & Order SVU opposite Marissa Hargitay, The Good Wife, and Made in Jersey. She played Francesca on All My Children and is featured as one of the last 3 girls for the role of Val in the critically acclaimed A Chorus Line documentary, Every Little Step. Meredith made her feature film debut as Marilyn Monroe in Paramount's Company Man. Some other film credits include Broken Flowers, where she played opposite Bill Murray and was Lady Alyssa in Disney's The Princess Diaries II: Royal Engagement with Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway, and Chris Pine. Meredith now lives in Montana with her husband and two children where she runs her own production company. She's written two books and she has her own podcast, all of which we'll be talking about...in Part 2 so stay tuned! This episode picks up at the end of Meredith and Scott reminiscing. Enjoy Part 1 of Scott's conversation with the lovely...the talented...Meredith Patterson! Talking points: mindset, purpose, military, masculinity A sincere honor to chat with J.R., and I'm blown away by his perspective and honesty on the hardship he's faced—and overcome. We cover a lot of ground: the importance of male friendship, the struggles veterans can go through, the importance of vulnerability AND accountability. Throughout it all, J.R.'s outlook shines through. Listen in, team. (00:00:00) - JR's defining moment (00:11:45) - What happened to JR during his deployment (00:23:58) - How men and veterans get stripped of purpose and identity, what contributes to that, and how we can do better (00:38:04) - What JR would say to men who see the state of things and retreat into isolation, and the importance of building emotional for yourself (00:55:50) - What JR would teach the next generation of men J.R. Martinez's life story is one of resilience and transformation. A Louisiana-born Army veteran and Iraq War survivor, Martinez faced tragedy early in his military service when a roadside bomb explosion left him with severe burns covering over a third of his body. His recovery included 34 months of treatment and 33 surgeries, a challenging journey that revealed his strength and inspired a new purpose. Martinez began sharing his story, quickly becoming a sought-after speaker, captivating audiences at military bases and for major organizations like Delta and Wells Fargo. His personal mantra, “Adapt & Overcome,” resonated deeply, embodying his commitment to resilience and gratitude. He's also become an advocate for organizations like the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors and Glasswing International, earning awards like the Ivy Award and the National Red Cross Spirit Award. In 2008, Martinez ventured into acting with a role on All My Children, which opened doors in entertainment. He won the 2011 season of Dancing with the Stars, capturing audiences nationwide. His memoir, Full of Heart, became a New York Times bestseller, and he later pursued higher education, a milestone for his family. Today, Martinez continues to inspire through speaking engagements, acting, and advocacy, sharing his journey of strength and hope with audiences worldwide while balancing family life with his wife, Diana, and their children.
