The group, led by Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret, promoted a doctrine focused on the idea of achieving spiritual enlightenment and preparing for a cosmic transformation. In 1994 and 1995, a series of mass suicides and murders occurred in Switzerland and Canada, resulting in the deaths of over 70 members. This week, Vee covers The Order of the Solar Temple, a lesser known doomsday cult responsible for the deaths (murder/suicide) of more than 70 people. We find out what happens when "harmless" becomes harmful and money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you chalets, lasers, holograms, and a lot of drugs and guns.

Episode 188: In early October of 1994, during a bizarre, nearly simultaneous sequence of murder / suicides, in Quebec, and across the Atlantic in Switzerland, 53 members of the Order of the Solar Temple were found dead in burned out buildings. The deaths fulfilled what the cult's leaders claimed was the group's “final transit” or return to Unity with God required before the impending end of the world. Even though it appeared to be over, more cult members were yet to die. Over a year later, in December of 1995, sixteen members of the cult died in France. More than a year after that, in march 1997, another five cult members died in Quebec bringing the death toll to 74.  The cult's two founders, Luc Jouret and Joseph Di Mambro, were among the dead in 1994, however, some fear there may be future related mass murder / suicides by followers still practicing in secret. The Children of God(1968) A group formed in the late '60s in Hunting Beach CA buy their leader David Berge who preach a mixture of believing in Jesus and the 60s era free love believing of course that the end times were near. At one point the group had over 15000 members including many now-famous families of Joaquin Phenix and Rose McGowin. What was really going on when the encouragement and practices of abuse of its younger members. This lead to both famous families leaving and relocating out of the Us before returning in the late 70s. Even. In the end, after both of its leaders passed in 1994 after being investigated by the FBI their then 29-year-old son committed suicide after also dispatching a once nanny who had a hand in his abuse when he was young. The Group is still active but no longer believe the apocalypse is near and still has about 1700 followers in the greater California area. The Order of the Solar Temple Founded in 1984 by Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret, the Order of the Solar Temple and the International Chivalric Organization of the Solar Temple claimed to be based on the traditions and ideals of a Knights Templar. The group believed that the spiritual outweighed physical, and they also believe in the second coming of Christ as a “Solar deity or God-King” and called for the unity of Christianity and Islam. Pulling inspiration from the Order of the East Temple headed by Aleister Crowley, from 1923 until his death on December 1, 1947, as well as the Order of the Golden Dawn, the Freemasons, and other Rosicrucian groups. The Order of the Solar Temple had lodges all over the world including Switzerland, Canada, and France. The Order had a level and grading system with the three levels being the Brothers of Parvis, the Knights of the Alliance, and the Brothers of Ancient Times, each containing thee grades in each level. The top 33 members were in a group known as the Elder Brothers of the Rosy Cross. As one increases in level, there would be fees and the purchasing of costumes and regalia, which included a Crusader-Like robe. The Lodges had elaborate alters and rituals and the members were told that Di Mambro had an authentic Templar sword gifted to him over a thousand years ago previous life past life Most notably in October of 1994, Emmanuel Dutoit the three months old son Tony Dutoit was stabbed multiple times with wooden Stakes in a lodge located Morin-Heights Quebec. Allegedly Di Mambro ordered the attack claiming the child was the Antichrist sent to sabotage his spiritual work. Shortly after DiMambro and 12 followers report performed a ritual of The Last Supper after which mass murders and suicide in sued resulting in the deaths of 74 individuals between 1994 and 1997. Raelism Founded in the 70s by Claud Vorilhon (aka Rael) in France. The Church believes that the Elohim, an alien race, created humanity in their likeness. Rael claimed that on December 13, 1973, that he was visited by the Elohim and gave him these teachings. They claim that the Elohim were mistaken as angels and gods and were worshiped by early humans. Raelians believe that the Elohim will guide the earth to scientific enlightenment and have us join the creators in space. They believe in free love, scientific discovery, and cloning. The True Way Cult (1955 Taiwan) Was formed by a former professor who was clearly nuts. Its beliefs are that the universe is only 4.5 million years old. The solar system was created by a Nuclear War. We all have 3 souls.

Amanda was a normal teen who loved her family and listening to classic rock. She adored animals and like many others who age enjoyed socializing at parties with friends. On the night of September 20, she headed out to go have some fun with her friends. They got someone to buy them a few bottles of whiskey and rum and then they headed to a house party in North Tonawanda, New York. Afterwards, they tried to get into a bar in Buffalo but were turned away because most people in the group were minors. At around 1:20 AM, friends saw Mandy get into the vehicle of an 18-year old male student from their high school. The friends saw the car drive off onto Oliver Street and that was the last time anyone ever saw Mandy alive again. 5 weeks later when two men were out looking for mushrooms near Bond Lake in Lewiston they discovered her lifeless body. By that point it was badly decomposed and It was determined by authorities that she had been strangled and also received several blows to the head that caused two fractures in her skull. #2 Order of the Solar Templar Based on the ideals promoted by the Knights Templar, the Order of the Solar Templar (Ordre du Temple Solaire or OTS in French) was and still continues to remain one of the most secretive cults in the world today. Founded by Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret in 1984 Joseph convinced his members that he was a reincarnated member of the Knights Templar and that his own daughter, Emanuelle, was "The Cosmic Child." He explained to them that a better life awaited them and that they would be taken to a planet orbiting the star Sirius when they died. Joseph was the son of a construction worker and raised as a Catholic. By the 1950s, he began practicing occultism and joined The Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis. Afterwards, he established The Golden Way Foundation in hopes of making money as well as creating a connection with those who were interested in the occult, and It was here that he met Luc Jouret.

Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret founded The Order of the Solar Temple. They told their followers that the world would end in 1995, but if they killed themselves, they would be reborn on the star Sirius. Then one night in October of 1994, 48 members of the Orders of the Solar Temple died across two continents. How were Di Mambro and Jouret able to convince so many followers to die for something they likely knew not to be true? 

Joseph Di Mambro was no stranger when it came to new religious movements. He had joined a few of them as a young adult, and when he decided to start his own, he had a hard time getting followers. With the help of Luc Jouret, the two founded The Order of the Solar Temple. Their goal was to unlock the secret knowledge of the universe, but it ultimately would lead to their deaths.
