In this episode of the Captains Collective Podcast, I sit down with artist and lodge owner Vaughn Cochran for a thoughtful conversation that moves from destination fishing to life design. We talk about building lodges, creating art, navigating failure, and the small decisions that shape a meaningful life. Vaughn shares perspective from decades of blending creativity, business, and time on the water—and why paying attention matters more than forcing outcomes. This episode isn't a how-to guide. It's a reflection on playing the long game and designing a life you actually want to live. Send us a textThink you've hunted remote? Try flying 90 minutes past the last road into a world where the only planes you see are coming for you, the ice is six feet thick, and the silence makes your ears ring. We sat down with Kevin from Blue Sky Outfitting to unpack what it takes to guide both baited timber wolf hunts in Alberta and spot-and-stalk Arctic wolf hunts on the tundra, plus the grit behind running a fly-in lodge network that's hundreds of air kilometers from the nearest town.We trace Kevin's path from dry-field waterfowl in the Peace River region to a full-time year-round operation pursuing moose, whitetail, black bear, wolves, muskox, and world-class lake trout. He explains how to choose and run a wolf bait the right way—reading sign, building daylight confidence, and avoiding the tiny noises that send wolves nocturnal. We get real on pack behavior, color phases, and why any wolf is a trophy when success demands hours of stillness and a mind that won't wander. Then we head north of treeline where baiting is illegal and strategy pivots to glassing caribou, following tracks off the ice roads to the diamond mines, and taking quick shots from 50 to 250 yards when opportunity cracks open. This conversation also leans into predator management without the drama. Wolves are built to kill; grizzlies hit calves hard; herds ebb and flow. Balance matters more than myths, and smart hunting is part of that balance. Kevin shares the cold-weather truths most folks learn the hard way—why oversized boots keep you from frostbite, how spare goggles save a day, and which calibers anchor wolves without ruining a mount. Along the way, he paints a picture of the barrenlands—pristine beaches with no footprints, caribou drifting across blue tundra, and wolverines tunneling under carcasses while wolves lounge nearby. If you're curious about ethical wolf hunting, extreme remoteness, or how to plan a serious northern adventure, this one delivers practical insight and honest stories from the field. Subscribe, share with a hunting buddy, and leave a quick review to help others find the show. Then tell us: would you take the baited sit or chase the ice-road stalk?Check us out on Facebook Hunts On Outfitting, or myself Ken Marr.
In this episode of God Is Red, we walk through Chapter 5 of Taylor's book, Rediscovering Turtle Island. Taylor (Omaha / Cherokee) guides us through the sacred site of Pahuk—known to the Pawnee as an "animal lodge" and to neighboring nations as a holy hill. We trace how a place becomes a teacher: a river crossing near a mound that echoes an earthen-lodge, a spring tied to underworld passages, an oak savanna forming a threshold. The landscape isn't backdrop; it's scripture, sanctuary, and archive.Learn more about Taylor's work HERE.Purchase Rediscovering Turtle Island HERE.Learn more about Daniel's work HERE.

The shooting lodges of the Scottish Highlands have beguiled and entranced people from all walks of life for generations. But beyond the romantic facade - the magnificent architecture and breathtaking scenery - lies a complex and at times troubled past that continues to echo down through the centuries.Joining Geoff and Rory on this week's episode is architectural historian, writer and proud Highlander - Mary Miers - who authored a book on 'Highland Retreats' and who is unafraid of tackling the storied past of Scotland's shooting lodges head-on whilst simultaneously celebrating their many delights.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.liveOur special guest this week, David Polansky is a political theorist and commentator who lives in Canada. A frequent contributor to Wisdom of Crowds, he joins Shadi Hamid and Damir Marusic to discuss two excellent recent essays. The first one, titled “Does Canada Exist?” is about Canadian national identity, an issue that has become more relevant since Donald Trump has taken to calling Canada the 51st state, and while some in the western Canadian province of Alberta has floated the idea of seceding from the rest of Canada. Polansky's article was quoted in the New York Times and National Post.David's most recent peace, “Michael Jordan Yes; Winston Churchill No?” is about what makes politicians great and whether political greatness (in terms of impact) can be distinguished from moral goodness. After one hundred days of Trump, it is an important question to ask. What follows is a rollicking and often hilarious conversation in which various politicians — Justin Trudeau, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump — are sized up according to the standards of classical greatness and found wanting. Damir and Shadi nevertheless argue that Trump is the most consequential president since FDR. Polansky argues that Trump's impact is in large part due to the fact that the Left is lost right now. It is lost, he argues, because it cannot create a new identity, and instead tries to forge unity around “niche issues,” like the Palestine question. In our bonus section for paid subscribers, the gang muses on Trump's relationship to shame; Polansky distinguishes between courage and guts, and why Trump has the latter but not former; Shadi asks, “What do you think about Stalin?”; Damir explains why Trump is like a character in a science fiction novel; Polansky argues that “there's a grandeur to America, but there's also a ridiculousness to America”; Shadi interrogates Polansky on hierarchy and greatness; and the three men ponder whether Eisenhower was a great president.Required Reading and Viewing* David Polansky, “Michael Jordan, Yes; Winston Churchill, No?” (WoC).* David Polansky, “Does Canada Exist?” (WoC).* David Polansky, “Pundit Don't Preach” (WoC).* David's Substack, Strange Frequencies.* Where the “Worthwhile Canadian Initiative” meme comes from (Paul Krugman's Newsletter). * “What to Know About Alberta's Potential Separation From Canada” (TIME).* Carl Schmitt (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).* Chantal Mouffe on “agonistic” democracy (Pavilion).* Stephen Kotkin talk about Stalin (YouTube).* Isaac Asimov, the Foundation trilogy (Amazon).* “Trump says Houthis showed ‘bravery,' believes they will honor truce deal” (Times of Israel).* Polansky's “Cabots and Lodges” reference (Berkshire Edge).* Analysis of Bill Clinton's 2012 DNC speech (CNN).Free preview video:Full video for paid subscribers below:
