The Gospel from the Hebrew ScripturesActs 28:23 (ESV) When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.A young Jewish woman, Rachel, has been depressed and counseling as well as medications from physicians have not helped. She has questions about God and seeks out Rabbi Mordechai Klein to answer her questions.This is an imagined conversation. Scripture quotations are from the New King James Version of the Bible.Rabbi Klein, thanks for meeting with me. I feel a burden constantly on my shoulders. I don't know where it's coming from. Could it be coming from God? I've been reading the Torah and I see judgement in some sections, especially in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Am I seeing things correctly, Rabbi?Hi Rachel, it is a pleasure to meet you. Let's talk about what concerns you. Adonai spoke to us through Moses several thousand years ago and warned us, the Jewish people. He told us what would happen to us if we obeyed Him and what would happen to us if we disobeyed Him. There is no statute of limitations on these warnings. Let's read together. I see that you have your Tanach with you.Leviticus 26:2-5 You shall keep My Sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary: I am the LORD. 'If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments, and perform them, then I will give you rain in its season, the land shall yield its produce, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. Your threshing shall last till the time of vintage, and the vintage shall last till the time of sowing; you shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.Leviticus 26:14-18 'But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments, and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant, I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. I will set My face against you, and you shall be defeated by your enemies. "Now, Rachel, you know that the vast majority of our people have been disobedient. And we have suffered greatly. We have gone through the crusades, the inquisition, pogroms, Hitler's Holocaust, and more. Since our Nation was reborn in 1948 we have been through multiple wars and intifadas. And most recently the October 7 massacre by Hamas. More Jewish people lost their lives on that day than on any other single day since the Holocaust. And of course it isn't over. War continues and hostages are still held by Hamas.OK, Rabbi. You've explained a lot. But hasn't God made a way for this endless cycle of judgment to stop?Yes, He has. But first, God must forgive the sins we have committed against Him and we must obey His Law. Here is a summary of the Law:Deuteronomy 6:5 NKJVYou shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.andLeviticus 19:18 NKJVYou shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.But Rabbi, how can I do these things? I don't always feel love for God and I often bear ill will toward my neighbor. What can I do?A change deep within yourself must occur, Rachel. But you cannot do it. Only God can do it. Your heart must change. You must become a new person. It's as if you must be born again. You can't do this on your own. It's a supernatural thing. Listen, please:Deuteronomy 30:6And the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.Ezekiel 36:26I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.And Rachel, when God gives you this new heart you will immediately recognize that you are a sinner, a terrible sinner, and you will repent and ask God to forgive you. Rachel, I think the burden you are carrying now, the heavy weight you feel on your shoulders, is the knowledge of sin. God can relieve you of this burden and your depression will lift.But Rabbi, as an orthodox Jew, I know that there must be a payment, a sacrifice, for my sins to be forgiven. We no longer have a Temple in Jerusalem where sin offerings can be made. How then can payment for my sins be made?Rachel, we must look at another passage from the Hebrew Scriptures.Isaiah 53:3-5 NKJVHe is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.Rachel, there was a Man to whom this passage applies. An actual historical figure. He told us that He was the Messiah, sent by God. He told His followers that He would lay down His life for His friends. And He did. He sacrificed His life and shed His blood on a Roman cross 2,000 years ago. That blood is paying for our sins today.Rabbi, you don't mean Yeshu, do you? Yeshu is an acronym of contempt, Rabbi. Surely you don't believe that He was the Messiah, do you?I do, Rachel. Our Scriptures are clear. He fulfills all of the prophecies about our Messiah. And His name is not Yeshu. It is Yeshua which means salvation. Rachel, this Man was and is the Son of God, the Messiah. You see, some of our Rabbis think there are two Messiahs: the suffering Servant of Isaiah 53 and the conquering mighty One of Isaiah 9. Let's read from Yeshayahu:Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.Rachel, there is one Messiah and two comings. Isaiah 7:14 tells of the Messiah's first coming. Immanuel means God with us, and that is exactly what He was. He came to die to pay the debt for our sins. This already happened. And now, listen to this passage:Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.This passage has not been fulfilled yet. Yeshua will come a second time and He will reign on earth from Jerusalem for a thousand years. Notice that in Isaiah 9 He is called Mighty God. There is only one Messiah. Rachel, the Messiah is the Son of God. He is divine and equal to God. That's why His sacrifice on the cross - His shed blood and death - provides once and forever atonement for all of our sins, provided that we accept Him as our Lord and Savior.But Rabbi, are you saying that God loves the Jewish people so much that He sent His Son to die for us on the cross? That's a criminal's death.Yes, Rachel. It is. He died as a criminal on a cross and not just for us, but for all people. Rachel, listen to the words given to the prophet Jeremiah.Jeremiah 31:31-34 "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."Rachel, God couldn't make this New Covenant with us without giving us a new heart first. And He will do that; He will circumcise the heart of every living Jewish person at the end of a time of terrible trouble for the world, and then the entire Nation of Israel will be saved. This terrible time is called the Time of Jacob's Trouble or The great Tribulation.Jeremiah 30:4-7 Now these are the words that the LORD spoke concerning Israel and Judah. "For thus says the LORD: 'We have heard a voice of trembling, Of fear, and not of peace. Ask now, and see, Whether a man is ever in labor with child? So why do I see every man with his hands on his loins Like a woman in labor, And all faces turned pale? Alas! For that day is great, So that none is like it; And it is the time of Jacob's trouble, But he shall be saved out of it.But Rabbi, isn't there anything I can do now? I want my heart to be circumcised now and I don't want to go through the time of Jacob's Trouble.Yes! I believe that God has already circumcised your heart, Rachel. Listen to the prophet Joel:Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, As the LORD has said, Among the remnant whom the LORD calls.Rachel, Joel is speaking of a future time but I believe that the Lord has a blessing that is in place for us now. And that blessing is this: if we call upon the name of the LORD He will save us. That applies to individuals. It applies to you, Rachel.May the Lord bless you, Rabbi. This is a public episode. When you bring up the words "end times," people have a lot of different opinions about what this means. Though the end times are important for Christians to consider, many have taken this idea to create false Messiahs and damaging theologies. The aim of Jesus' Olivet teachings in Mark 13 is not to create speculation for tomorrow, but to fuel faithful obedience today. The overarching idea is that Jesus' future return shapes how we live now.

In this episode Al Fadi and Bro. Mel discuss more titles that the Quran refers to that are Jewish; example 1. Jaloot /Galoot (Sura 2:251), which is a Jewish Exilarch; a Jewish leader of the diaspora. 2. Illiyun/ a reference to the Jerusalem Talmud. 3. Sijin (Sura 83:7) a reference to the Babylonian Talmud. In the seventh century Mehmed was a Messianic title, and in the seventh century the Jews believed in two Messiahs ; Messiah bin Joseph( a suffering servant who dies for the Jews . the other is Messiah bin David who is a triumphant king who will destroy Israel's enemies. Also In the seventh century the Jews had a chain of Messiahs/ Mehmeds . So could've the title Mehmed started as a historical name and with lots of distortions ended up being the Muhammad of Hijaz? Jesus tells us to expect false messiahs. But how will we know when they're false? Let's find out together as we read Luke 17:22-25 and Jeremiah 27:1-11 and 28:1-17.

In chapters 24 and 25 of Matthew we have "The Olivet Prophecy". The first of these chapters is today's reading and centres on signs answering the three questions of verse 3. Chapter 25 is more about readying ourselves for our Lord's return. Note the link to the end of chapter 23. The leprous house was to be thrown down stone by stone. Disciples would be confused by claims made by false Messiahs and these would be accompanied by betrayal and persecution. A great sign to believers would be the desolation of Israel caused by the Roman invasion which had been foretold by Moses in Deuteronomy 28 and to Daniel in his ninth chapter. Opportunity would be provided for disciples to flee; this happened as Robert Roberts pointed out in "Ways of Providence" on five occasions. But those failing to heed Jesus' warnings would perish in the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple. The "Sign of the Son of Man in heaven" related to the presence of Rome's armies in the incipient fulfilling of those words and later, to a larger degree, to the restoration of the state of Israel. Next followed the parable of the fig tree (representative of Israel), and tells us why desolation had to come. Despite the signs none could know exactly when. Preparedness would be essential and disciples need to be ready by demonstrating patience by two traits - wisdom and faithfulness (verse 45). Chapter 25, in tomorrow's readings, will explain this through parables.

2 Samuel 8 continues the enacted parable which commenced in chapter 6. After the promise of chapter 7 David strikes against his surrounding foes. David in Psalm 110 describes the role of Messiah - the king-priest after the order of Melchizedek - who would commence his rule among his enemies: Psalm 110 verse 2. Some of the victories recorded in 2 Samuel 8 are placed by the author of this segment of Samuel's second book, although these are deliberately placed out of chronological order. This is to develop the symbolism of the enactment. Teaching through the parabolic form is an important part of Scripture as it takes our minds along with the developing story. The Moabites were severely dealt with and the Syrians defeated and garrisoned to prevent them from uprising. Syria's king's crown was sent to David and placed on his head. The king of Hamath after hearing of the Syrians defeat sent tribute to king David. Verses 11-12 name the nations subdued by David and the collected tribute dedicated to God - no doubt being collected for the building of the temple in Solomon's reign. Next David subdued Edom and placed troops there. Verses 16-18 speak of the nation's officers set over his kingdom's administration. Chapter 9 tells of David's kindness to Mephibosheth Jonathan's lame son. David enquired of Ziba one of the servants of Jonathan's house, possibly appointed by the previous king Saul, as to whether there were any survivors of Saul's household to whom David could show kindness. David is told of Mephibosheth who is now raised to sit with David at the king's table. Mephibosheth shows reverence to David and declares his unworthiness of such an honour. Ziba is given the responsibility of managing Mephibosheth's estates; whilst Jonathan's son goes to Jerusalem.    In Jeremiah 13 verses 1-7 the prophet is told by the Almighty to go to place a dry loincloth around his waist. Many days later Jeremiah was asked to to the Euphrates River and put the cloth in a safe place in the cleft of a rock near the river. The clothing was buried and Jeremiah returned to Jerusalem. What a long journey God had asked him to take! The lesson must have been important. Later again Jeremiah is sent back to where he had buried his clothes and God asked him to find his clothes. Then as would have been expected the prophet recovers his ruined clothing. Two return journeys each of about a thousand kilometres for each of these trips. In verses 8-11 Yahweh tells Jeremiah what all this signified. It was the LORD's expectation that His people would cling closely to their God. They should have been an adornment to the God of Israel. Instead the nation proved to be worthless for the purpose to which their Sovereign had called them. In verses 12-14 Jeremiah is told of the parable of the many wineskins which were to represent the people of the LORD filled with His teachings. Instead Judah had imbibed every wine that was contrary to the ways of Yahweh. They had become drunk with the wine of Babylon - from the leaders to the common people. And so their Omnipotent Maker would not spare His people. The language describing their destruction is reminiscent of Psalm 137 verse 8 which tells of Babylon's destruction. Verses 15-17 tell of the coming exile of Yahweh's flock. There are three very strong allusions in these verses which are picked up by our Lord Jesus Christ in the raising of Lazarus in John 11 verses 1-10, 35. Pause and reflect on why our Lord would use this chapter from Jeremiah when he is under siege from the rulers of the Jews. In Jeremiah 13 verses 18-19 the rulers of God's people are told that the Almighty would soon send them into exile. Verses 20-22 explain the nation's immorality for which Judah's husband was to discipline His wife. Verse 23 says that their behaviour was true to type just as the Ethiopian's skin would always be dark. From the Maccabean revolt (167 BC) to the destruction of the Temple in AD 70 by the Romans, other men rose up and claimed to be the Messiah, the long awaited savior of Israel. But something else happened long before this in Jewish history that was more significant. Study 29-Luke 23:26–24:12 The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus. All history pivots on the events described in these verses. The story is told with striking simplicity and absence of comment. We read Luke 23:26 – 43. Many people play a part in the judicial murder of Jesus. In order from Luke 22:47 on we read about:Judas, the arresting squad, Peter, the men guarding Jesus, the council of the elders, Pilate, Herod, the soldiers, the crowd in front of Pilate’s house, the soldiers leading Jesus to his death, the watchers and rulers at the place called a Skull and the criminals on their crosses. For each of these we might: Consider what their motives, if any, were for what they did. Think of a present day situation where the same motives might be apparent. Wonder which of these motives we might sometimes have ourselves. Question 1: Select 3 people or groups of people from that list and consider the motive, present day equivalent and personal reflection for each of them. The arresting squad, the men guarding Jesus and the soldiers were all obeying orders so motive doesn’t really come into it except for those who mocked Jesus rather more vigorously than they might have done. The problem of when to disobey orders is still with us. No one has ever been able to explain why Judas did what he did completely satisfactorily. Peter acted from a desire for self preservation, something we have probably all been guilty of in some small or large way at some time in our lives. The elders, Pilate, Herod and the rulers watching the crucifixion allowed political aims to dominate their thinking. They thought their ideas more important then the life of the most important man who ever lived. Some people still allow purely political aims to lead them to dreadful acts of wickedness. Only the friends watching beside the Cross, of whom the most important, according to John, were women and just one disciple, come out of the story with any credit at all. They had seen something in this man that transcended the danger of being associated with him. May we have the strength and courage to do the same. Question 2: Paul talks about sharing Jesus’ sufferings (Romans 8:17; 2 Corinthians 1:5; Philippians 3:10). For some of us those statements may be reflected in our own lives. What would we achieve by such suffering? Would any such sufferings be in any way redemptive? f course sufferings, by definition, are not pleasant. Such things give us a great sense of solidarity – these would give us a much enhanced sense of solidarity with Christ, of fellowship with him. And apart from our feelings there would be the practical experience of His glory that Paul also mentions. We read Luke 23:44–56. The tearing of the temple curtain symbolises the opening of the way to God to everybody – you and me included. Each and every attempt by men to re-erect a barrier to God by saying that only they have full access, or only in their way is it possible to approach God, is sadly mistaken. After the death of Jesus the action moves to the apparent outsiders:Joseph of Arimathea was not one of the leading disciples and the women were second rate citizens in the thinking of those days. Question 3: Which one sentence of the story of the crucifixion will you take away as the most memorable for you? Different people would give different answers to this. For me, I think it is that brief comment “the centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God” because that mirrors my thoughts as I read about what happened. And so we come to the resurrection. We read Luke 24:1 – 12. This is one of the four accounts of what happened that we have. They do not exactly agree about what happened, differing in the way that eye-witness accounts of any surprising, unexpected, event will do. The women set out to do the obvious, necessary things, for a dead person. They did not agonize in prayer about what they should do (did they leave that to the male apostles?). They were hugely blessed as a result of undertaking the obvious tasks. Is this a lesson for us? Question 4: Why was it women (in those days considered unreliable witnesses to anything!) who were there first? What are we expected to learn from the fact that they were first to meet the risen Lord (according to Matthew and John)? The New Testament challenges the way women were thought of and treated in those days. It does this obliquely, rather than directly in gospel stories like this, in the way Paul refers to women particularly in the last chapter of Romans where Priscilla has a dominant role in what she does with her husband, in what is said of Phoebe, in that Junias, a woman, is called an apostle, and many other women are mentioned and commended, all in this same chapter. The church, like the societies in which it has existed for most of its history has been male dominated. We need to be careful to think about the balance we see in scripture. The most important event in the history of the world was the death of Jesus on the Cross, for that act alone atoned for the rebellion of all men and women, including you and me, against God. That we know this is the correct understanding of what happened is because of what followed – the resurrection of Jesus to the new life of the ages. Had he not risen he would have been just one more of the many failed would-be Messiahs of those days. There would have been no church, no Christian movement. Many people have tried to argue that it did not happen. None of them have given a satisfactory explanation of what did happen. We know without the slightest doubt that there was a Jewish nation there when Jesus was born and that a remarkable movement of people known as Christians started very soon after his death. Something happened in between to cause the move from one to the other. What was it? Only the Biblical account recorded in the four gospels makes any sense of the gap. We – you – have to come to terms with what happened and decide how we – you – are going to respond to it. The next, and last, study in this series considers the two episodes describing what happened when disciples met the risen Christ. These are clearly written to challenge any and every reader or hearer to faith. So, if you are not already a follower of Jesus, you are going to be challenged to think deeply about what you have heard. Will you be prepared to follow Him, whatever the cost may be? Some arguments raised against the Resurrection of Christ seem plausible at first, but actually they are illogical. Meanwhile, the followers of a modern rabbi insist that he is the promised Messiah, not Jesus. But how well does he compare to Jesus of Nazareth?
