In recent weeks, you may have caught wind of my concern for the population of people who are chronically under-eating to the detriment of their health and longevity. On this episode, I welcome my wife Crystal to the podcast, as well as repeat guest Kim Howerton, to discuss reverse dieting and its metabolic benefits in addition to the newly debated topic of vitamin A toxicity and liver consumption.

Listeners can find Kim Howerton at her website kimhowerton.com, on Facebook @theketonist, and on Instagram @theketonist. Robert Orion Sikes is a lifetime natural, competitive bodybuilder. He formulated his own approach to contest prep nutrition leveraging keto, and earned his pro-status with bodybuilding in 2017. Robert has since dedicated his life to learning and teaching others the benefits of following a well formulated, ketogenic lifestyle. The lessons learned led to his creation of the Keto Brick, a 1,000 calorie, ketogenic performance meal. Robert now works alongside his wife Crystal and their amazing team to continually create content and add a ton of value within this community. His mission is, and will continue to be, empowering others to believe in themselves and truly tap into their full potential by optimizing their body and mind. Kim Howerton struggled with her relationship with food from the time she was 8. As the years went by and her health problems mounted, she felt at the mercy of her body and out of control with her weight. A dedicated seeker of pleasure, she realised that life in a body that was always in pain was no way to live; that a pleasurable life starts by living in a body that feels good. Enter Keto – a life that has brought together her love of satisfying, delicious foods in a way that makes her actually feel good. In this episode, Rachel, Robert and Kim dissect the concept of metabolic flexibility, today’s dietary pitfalls, metabolic IN-flexibility, food guilt, carbs on a spectrum, keto treats and more! "There's going to be groups of people that do better with moderation and groups of people that do better with elimination. I don't think one is right or wrong...I think it's just very individualized." Robert Sikes "I think one of the enemies of sustainability is dogmatism. I think probably all of us would agree that you have to be at least mentally flexible enough to say, 'Hmm, I wonder if this is still the best thing for me to do?'" Kim Howerton "You have to be very careful when you're tipping this seesaw of moderation because in this day and age, it's just so hard to moderate the hyperpalatable crap that's all around us." Rachel, Kim, and I take turns discussing metabolic flexibility on today's podcast. We talk about things like whether or not women need carbs, carb cycling vs. targeted carbs, and what metabolic flexibility means to each of us. We also talk about being too restrictive, and how to moderate your environment. Enjoy!
In this Part II Podcast with Kim Howerton, we dive into everything to do with metabolic flexibility. We talk about what it is, our worries with it, and the confusion about it among most people in the Keto Community. We talk about whether or not there are truly any benefits from it, and why people usually want to experiment with it in the first place. We are definitely speaking the same language on this topic, I hope you enjoy!
Kim and I dive into things like reverse dieting, eating at a deficit, and how to get the correct macros for starting the Keto diet. We talk about her past and how she got started with the diet, and how she sets up her clients to ensure success. We talk about striving for better health, not just a lower number, and how to optimize reverse dieting! Enjoy!
Join us for a crossover catch-up with Kim Howerton, Daisy Brackehall and their friend Terri Lance as they have a heart to heart over 2019 and what's coming in 2020.
Kim Howerton struggled with food and her weight since she was 8 years old. Raised in the low fat diet culture of the 1980’s and 90’s, a time when we were constantly told, “Eat less and exercise more!” was the solution to all our woes. (Yeah, ok we are still told that). Her guilt and shame about her inability to follow this “simple” advice was ever present. A member of Weight Watchers from the time she was 13, she dieted. She worked out. She was miserable, hungry and tired. And, she was overweight. College brought some short term success, but she gained the weight back plus some, which ushered her into the over 200 lbs club… where she remained a member for the next 2 decades. And then she found Keto. Go here to read her story: https://www.theketonist.com/about “I can live the rest of my life not looking great in a bikini, but when I hit 40 I realized I didn’t want to die.” - Kim Howerton
Carl and Carrie talk to Keto coach Kim Howerton about the top mistakes she sees people making when embarking on a ketogenic diet.
This episode is also another talk fro the Low Carb Cruise. One given by Kim Howerton on Habit Change! I loved this talk and it was honestly my favorite talk! Kim struggled with food and weight since she 8 years old. Raised in the low fat diet culture of the 1980’s and 90’s, a time when we were constantly told, “Eat less and exercise more!” was the solution to all our woes. Decades of struggle left her sure there was no solution besides acceptance of what is. But all that changed when she found Keto, and all the health gains she thought were out of her grasp became her reality. Already a successful life coach, she added Keto to her toolbox and watched so many people have the kinds of transformations (inside and out) that they’d almost given up hope seeing. A quick sneak peak into the new podcast featuring Neisha & Ken Berry and Carrie Brown in weekly keto chats with Kim Howerton.
In this episode, I speak with Kim Howerton on the sustainability of long-term dieting! We dive into how she controls her eating habits and how low she recommends taking carbohydrates. We talk about the metabolic damage of chronic under eating and the psychology of reverse dieting. She gives us some insight on how to prepare ultra low carb recipes. We talk about the mindset behind staying true to your goals and your health for the long-game! I really enjoyed this conversation, Kim is incredibly intelligent and full of personality!
Hang out with the dudes and their keto friends Brenda Zorn, Kim Howerton, Daisy Brackenhall, and Nick Mailer.
Daisy’s latest extraordinary woman, Kim, talks about her passion for Keto and living a life fuelled by pleasure and ketones.
Richard Morris and Carl Franklin are joined at the 2 Keto Dudes Annual Holiday Party by previous guests Brenda Zorn (#21 & #32), Kim Howerton (#32), and L. Amber O`Hearn (#44) for a very special nearly 2-hour-long party version of the show. Don't spend the holidays alone! Hang out with us! And, don't forget to check out our new Ketogenic Forums!
Richard Morris and Carl Franklin hand over the mics this week to Brenda Zorn and Kim Howerton, both admins on the 2 Keto Dudes Facebook group. Brenda and Kim are here to talk about the unique challenges that women face around the ketogenic way of life. Hormones, periods, PCOS, fertility, pregnancy, menopause, weight loss, and more. This is the first of what we hope will be many more 2 Keto Dudes shows where Brenda and Kim talk about these issues in depth. Errata: The podcast that Kim refers to that discussed how women lose weight slower than men is a lecture by Dr Robert Cywes at the Cape town LCHF conference - see the show notes. Also, Carl said that if a mother eats a high carb diet while pregnant the baby may have a predisposition toward insulin sensitivity. He meant insulin resistance. Also, many people thought Brenda said "Dr. Fung says women shouldn't fast." She was actually echoing the myth that Fung refers to that women should not fast. She may have not chosen her words correctly, but that was her intent, to refer to the myth pointed out by Dr. Fung.
