In Finlay's first episode as co-host, he's donning his sports scientist hat to discuss the high fat low carb approach to fuelling endurance sports - a topic he's studied and practiced over his years racing Ironman triathlon as well as coaching athletes. This episode sifts through some of the myths, misinformation and grey areas around fuelling for endurance sports, favouring a balanced, logical approach: the appropriate food to fuel the appropriate session. Finlay also talks about what got him into running - from golfing injuries, to spectating Ironman UK as a teenager, and going on to study sports science and run his first marathon. Training talk begins at: 28:43.If there's a particular topic you'd like us to explore, or you just want to get in touch, email: thepod@run4it.com.
Vegan was all the rage for a while and now carnivore is going gangbusters -2 ways of eating that are at either end of the diet spectrum, at least philosophically. However, if we look at the reason humans eat food it really is a different conversation. If we measure diets based on the micronutrients that they provide then maybe vegan and carnivore are no longer opposites but in fact the difference between… 1st and last. There is no doubt that carnivore has been helping heal and cure people of health problems since it first kicked off and it's a diet that, for a change, most people actually feel happily satiated with eating. Not feeling hungry on a diet and getting all your micros… What is this unicorn? On today's show, we chat with someone that went on the journey herself and is now an expert in the carnivore world. On Today's Episode We Cover:Why removing carbohydrates could be beneficial for youWhere do carnivores get their vitamin C and Calcium fromIs meat consumption killing the planet***Join the Busy Mum's Facebook Group here: https://mattylansdown.com/BusyMothersFBgroup ***SOCIAL MEDIA--AMBER WENTWORTHWebsite: https://lone-star-keto.com/InstagramFacebookYoutubeCarnivore & Fasting coaching: https://meatrx.com/product/amber-w/--MATTY LANSDOWNJoin the Busy Mum's Facebook Group >>HERE
Today, I am blessed to have here with me an investigative science and health journalist and co-founder of the non-profit Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI.org), Gary Taubes. He is the author of The Case Against Sugar (2016), Why We Get Fat and What to Do About It (2011), and Good Calories, Bad Calories (2007), published as The Diet Delusion in the UK. Taubes is the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research and has won numerous other journalism awards. These include the International Health Reporting Award from the Pan American Health Organization and the National Association of Science Writers Science in Society Journalism Award, which he won in 1996, 1999, and 2001. (He is the first print journalist to win this award three times.) Taubes graduated from Harvard College in 1977 with an SB degree in applied physics and received an MS degree in engineering from Stanford University (1978) and in journalism from Columbia University (1981). In this episode, Gary Taubes joins the show to speak about his work shining a light on bad science in the nutritional realm. After publishing What If It’s All Been A Big Fat Lie?, Gary faced loads of backlash. However, that didn’t stop him. Gary has published countless books about why we need to ditch carbs, stop eating sugar, and start eating fats. Gary speaks about the inspiration behind his book, The Case For Keto. After interviewing 120 doctors from around the world that recommend the keto lifestyle, his book talks about why the established rules about eating healthy might be the wrong approach to weight loss. Tune in as we talk about why calories in, calories out is a terrible way to lose weight. ⏱️ The Art of Fasting Webinar. Register For Free: http://www.benazadiwebinar.com ▸

The ‘Deep Dive Data Driven Weight Loss Program’ we’ve been running over the last couple of years has revealed important variations as to what works best for most people. The flagrant falsehoods that Keto marketers use, such as fatty coffees, are a great way to start your day have encouraged me to dig deeper on the value or inappropriateness of having high fat as a constant in your diet. The Key is to know what your objective is, your purpose, to implement a ketogenic way of living. Lets talk. So as the year 2020 has an ever-changing landscape with COVID 19 and race events cancelling globally I felt the need to react accordingly with the Podcast. I know we will eventually get back into the race season; we just simply don’t know when and because of that it may be disheartening and difficult to find motivation to put in those long hours preparing for an IRONMAN. Not only that, but in a time where a virus runs ramped in our society I think the last thing we want to do is put anymore pressure on our immune system by risking over-training. Therefore, one of the shifts in the podcast I wanted to introduce is incorporating more health and wellness information across the platform so that we as endurance athletes can get the longevity out of our passions. This means I’d like to start having on experts across the health and wellness scene talk about ways we can best supplement our current endurance training, whether its alternative training advice, health advice, supplement education and more. That’s why I am excited to have on Jonathan Levitt from Inside Tracker. One thing that’s really bothered me about the health and fitness industry is that I can never get a definitive answer on what is the right way to train or eat for optimal performance and health. To be honest it’s stresses me out a lot being told that High Fat/Low Carb is the way to go, then Vegan is the way to go, and then see guys like Joe Rogan and Chris Kresser debunk the game changers and say you should consume meat. There are so many influential people out there recommending such opposing information it’s no wonder we struggle! It’s hard to know what’s right for you and coming from a medical background I am a firm believer in analytical data and that’s why I’ve reached out to the team at Inside Tracker to give us the definitive answers. Inside Tracker works with you to give you exact data on your health through your blood, your DNA, and your habits. From here they combine the data to generate individual nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle recommendations, customized to your body. Why is this so intriguing? Well, for starters people make over 200 food-based choices per day. So Inside Tracker gives you insight on what foods work best for you and which foods you should avoid. They also give you insight on things like how much and when you should eat these foods; based off your data. The biomarkers they test can range from identifying a comprehensive panel of glucose levels, cholesterol, vitamin and mineral levels, inflammation levels, your liver function, Complete blood count and more. WAY more detailed then what you could receive from a doctor. From this data set, they can provide you information on over 8000 different food items to improve specific biomarkers your deficient in. On TOP of that they also give you advice on hundreds of supplements, lifestyle and exercise suggestions to help you reach your optimal zones in all the biomarkers. Subsequent to this is your DNA. Learn about your body’s potential for certain traits like sleep, performance, predispositions and food sensitivities. Add this information on top of your biomarkers and you can truly tap into your peak human performance. It’s Customizable. It’s Simple. It’s based on you. And here is Jonathan from Inside Tracker. Let’s get into it.
Here’s a run-down of the main differences between ketogenic and HFLC diets: Ketogenic Main goal – induce ketosis Primary fuel source is fatty acids and ketone bodies from fat Requires strict breakdown of macronutrients to maintain ketosis Very little carbohydrate – usually 5-10% of total calorie needs Moderate amounts of protein – about 20% of total calorie needs and NOT a free for all! Lots of healthy fats (think avocado, nuts, olives, coconut, oils, and grass-fed butter and meats) – about 70% of total calorie needs HFLC – high-fat low-carb Main goal – reduce carbohydrate intake, but not necessarily induce ketosis Primary fuel source is usually glucose from carbs and/or protein No precise breakdown of macronutrients – less strict and many variations Typically includes moderate amounts of carbohydrates and protein Carbohydrate sources shift from refined and starchy, like pasta and sweets, to complex, like sweet potatoes Whether you choose to follow a HFLC diet or the more rigid ketogenic diet, decreasing carbohydrate intake and increasing fat intake are linked to the following health benefits: Weight loss Improved blood sugar and insulin levels Decreased blood pressure Improved HDL/LDL cholesterol ratio

HVMN Podcast: Evidence-based Nutrition, Fitness, & Biohacking
The broad field of nutrition and health is rife with myths, misconceptions and frequently posed yet seemingly fundamental questions that we intuitively feel should have simple answers. Is a calorie a calorie? Is obesity due to eating too much or doing too little? Is breakfast actually the most important meal of the day? When looking through the lens of insulin resistance, breakfast has often been seen as a "problem" meal that leads to the largest blood sugar spikes...especially for Type 2 diabetics. This is largely due to the typical "healthy" Western breakfast foods that are high in carbohydrates: Cereal, oatmeal, toast and fruit. A recent study aimed to explore if eating a low-carb and high-fat meal first thing in the morning is a simple way to prevent this large insulin spike, improve glycemic control throughout the day, and reduce other diabetes complications. This is the paper Dr. Brianna Stubbs will be diving into in this episode of the Research Roundup. Born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1949, medical doctor and professor Tim Noakes has spent a lifetime studying the intersection between athlete performance, diet, and health, focusing primarily on carbohydrate metabolism. But it hasn't always been easy, and after decades of promoting a high-carb diet as the key to heightened and sustained power output, Noakes had to do what every good scientist must: admit he was wrong when faced with evidence that contradicted what he'd believed to be true. Shortly after, he received a diagnosis of type II diabetes, which he without hesitation attributes to his own adherence to a high-carb diet for so many years. In 2012, Tim Noakes founded The Noakes Foundation, which funds quality research on low-carb diets and their role in type II diabetes reversal. The foundation has also started the Eat Better South Africans campaign, which allows South Africans in even the poorest communities to adopt a high-fat, low-carb, extremely healthy diet for just three dollars per day. Most recently, the foundation has developed The Nutrition Network, which is a certification and training program for doctors who want to prescribe a high-fat, low-carb diet to their patients, but don't know how to go about proving that such diets are truly safe and effective--especially for those suffering from type II diabetes. Noakes has a wealth of information and insight to offer, and decades of experience from which to draw. Tune in for all the details, and visit thenoakesfoundation.org to learn more.
I get a LOT of questions about macros, and staying on track, and what to do if things aren't exactly like they "should be", and of course what to do when you go on vacation or to a party...In this episode I talk about this idea of perfectionism in the weight loss industry. Do you really need to stick to your plan perfectly in order to see results? What happens if you "mess up"? Plus, last week I went to THREE Cardinals baseball games... and I share with you exactly what I ate, and what I did. Let's dive into the messy and complicated world of FOOD – sorting out fad diets, dogmatic food rules and discussing the different food camps that are currently popular in 2018. As registered nurses, we're not nutritionists or dietitians - but we are human. So we've had many of our own experiences around food. Plus, we've each fallen victim to the peer pressure at different stages of our lives based on our goals & we've each had our own personal journey around the discovery of the nutrition hiding in our food & the way of eating that works best for us individually. In this episode - we discuss how we got to where we our today – what our opinions are on all of it – while trying to uncomplicate it for you to understand it all better and make the best decisions for yourself in regards to food. We get personal – telling you which fad diets and dogmatic food rules we’ve subscribed to in the past and how that worked for us long term. Spoiler alert – it never works long term – it always comes back around to one basic, simple rule. Not any one single way of eating is perfect for everybody. Vegan, Vegetarian, Keto, Paleo, Macro, High Fat – Low Carb, High Carb – Low Fat, Weight Watchers, Atkins, Whole 30, 21 day fix…. The list goes on and on. But the answer is simple. Eat Real Food. Mostly Plants. Not too much. - Michael Polan said it best, and we’ve come to realize – that no matter which dogmatic food camp you may be subscribed to – we can all agree that REAL FOOD is at the core of our ultimate health and well being. Did you know….. Oreos and Coca Cola are vegan? – our point being …. No matter what group you belong too – you still need to take personal responsibility for the daily food choices you’re making while understanding the long-term effects of the foods your choosing to consume and WHY. Understanding the why behind the food we're eating will ultimately allow you to simplify your food choices long term, walk away from the rules, remove the emotional entrapment you’ve most likely felt at least once in your life around food – and we hope to allow you to begin enjoying food and the way it’s making you feel at your core – quite possibly for the first time in your life once you discover the 'why' behind our passion on this topic. He’s back! World renowned dietitian and exercise physiologist Bob Seebohar joins us again to delve deeper into the growing research surrounding his two concepts of metabolic efficiency training (MET) and nutrition periodization. If you listened to Bob’s last interview with us, you know that together these concepts increase the body's ability to use fat as fuel during exercise and thus optimize both body composition and performance - a hard balance to strike for most distance runners. If you missed that episode and like what you hear today, be sure to go back and give it a listen here for some better context. Bob is a registered dietitian, exercise physiologist, NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, USA Triathlon Level III Elite Coach. He also traveled to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games as a sport dietitian for the US Olympic Team and the personal sport dietitian/exercise physiologist for the Olympic Triathlon Team. This time Bob’s back to answer YOUR questions and, in so doing, discuss everything from MET’s relationship with paleo and plant-based diets all the way to how you can go about determining your own metabolic efficiency. Questions Bob is asked: 4:08 What do you do? 6:10 Can you remind us again about your concepts of Nutrition Periodization and Metabolic Efficiency Training? 10:21 Can you describe intuitive eating and how you help athletes attain that in combination with Metabolic Efficiency Training? 14:00 Can you describe what the Crossover Concept is? 23:41 How does the Metabolic Efficiency Test work? 28:20 Listener question from Yusef: Will I keep burning 60% fat at HR 150 bpm, at hour 28 of a 100miler? 39:55 Listener question from Diana: As someone who eats a ton of almond and peanut butter. Is this a carb, a fat or a protein? 48:14 Listener question from Chelsea: How does being vegan affect my metabolic efficiency and are there any tips for how can I improve this without giving up my lifestyle? 54:04 How do the Paleo Diet and High Fat / Low Carb diets fit in with Metabolic Efficiency Training? 57:13 Is it correct to assume you should increase carbs when in the thick of marathon training? 58:45 Listener question from Darlene: Is the Metabolic Efficiency lifestyle suitable for people with type 1 diabetes who use insulin pumps? 1:02:05 You offer personal consultations - what all do these entail and how can people work with you? 1:04:45 Where can listeners get a Metabolic Efficiency Test done? Quotes by Bob: “Nutrition periodization is basically aligning your daily nutrition to support your physical training needs.” “Metabolic efficiency is basically how efficient your body is at using its stores of carbohydrate and fat. Those are the two main stores of energy we have in our body, and you can actually train that.” “The point where the body crosses from higher to lower fat burning and lower to higher carbohydrate burning - where those two macronutrients cross - is the ‘crossover point’, and in research, they found that to be between 63-65% of max intensity.” “Metabolic efficiency is a great lifestyle nutrition program no matter what distance you’re training for.” “It will be more difficult - not impossible, certainly - but it will be more difficult to balance blood sugar following a pure vegan diet than it will when you enter animal proteins, and it’s just because you’re having more carbohydrate than protein.” Want more awesome interviews and advice? This week's episode is dedicated to learning more about how a ketogenic diet can improve and even reverse cognitive diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia and also mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. This is an important subject to discuss, not only to help those we know who have already been diagnosed, but also in prevention for ourselves and loved ones. To do so, I enlisted the help of Amy Berger, MS, CNS, NTP and author of The Alzheimer's Antidote, as a guest on the show to bring her knowledge on the topic and so much more about her low-carb journey. We even have differing opinions on a few subjects as it relates to keto vs. low-carb! TOPICS: How Amy got started with a low-carb, ketogenic diet Why she loves eating a low-carb diet Our differing opinions on amounts of dietary fats and carbs The "paralysis by analysis" effects of a keto diet in today's world Alzheimer's as type 3 diabetes Why the keto diet works in Alzheimer's patients Keto for depression and anxiety The role exogenous ketones can play in these diseases IMPORTANT LINKS: The Alzheimer's Antidote by Amy Berger, MS, CNS, NTP More from Amy Berger Find Amy on Twitter @tuitnutrition More from Shawn Mynar Shawn's Instagram Shawn's Facebook Precision Xtra Blood Ketone Meter Precision Xtra Blood Ketone Test Strips Learn more about your ad choices. The "expert" claims that it’s not sugar that’s responsible for the growth of cancer cells but rather insulin. They conclude from this that we should not be avoiding carbs. Maybe it’s just me but isn't this "expert" just shooting themselves in the foot by drawing this conclusion? If insulin is supposed to be the culprit in causing cancer and carbohydrates are the primary instigator in these raised insulin levels, then wouldn't lowering carb intake then be a wise strategy decrease insulin? Ummm, hello? The conclusions of this "expert" are really poorly thought out and even contradictory. This type of thinking completely boggles my mind. Hello Jimmy and Adam, I've been keto for about 6 weeks after eating Paleo for eight years. My wife and I are measuring our blood glucose and blood ketones every morning and keeping track of it. I will occasionally experience a lump in my throat since starting keto and my Google searches about this show a lot of theories about what it is, including acid reflux. We eat a very clean low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet with no processed foods and plenty of fresh leafy greens, grass-fed meats, butter, coconut oil, avocado, cheese, and more. Do you know what might be causing this because it seems to be a common problem reported by low-carb/ketogenic dieters. Love your show! Erik JIMMY AND DR. ADAM NALLY’S KETO LIVING SUPPLEMENTS – STUDY: Visceral adiposity and metabolic syndrome after very high–fat and low-fat isocaloric diets: a randomized controlled trial 1. Why would someone eating ketogenic experience very intense stomach pain and unbearable acid reflux? What can be done to resolve this issue? Jimmy and Adam, I love your podcast and have been on keto for six months. I am now inspired to help others start their own keto journey. Unfortunately, one of the people I’ve tried to help is a close friend who started keto about a month after I did and she has been experiencing some very intense stomach pain and unbearable acid reflux. Her doctor ran all the GI test and it all came back clear. The only solutions mainstream medicine has to offer is pills, pills, and more pills. She did suffer from bulimia for seven years and this is likely where her problem started. Do you have any suggestions on what she should do to resolve this? I’m guessing it’s a gut bacteria/enzyme issue and she’s been taking apple cider vinegar and cold water to no available so far. Thanks for al the info you are puting out! Travis 2. For someone who is skinny fat, how do get body fat percentage into a healthy range without getting too skinny? Hello Jimmy and Doc Nally, I found your podcast three weeks ago and am finding it very informative in my ketogenic journey. I’m 61 years old and could be considered skinny fat. I’ve been ketogenic for 18 months and got down to 115 pounds, but still with a body fat of 30%. I ordered a Ketonix to test breath ketones, but urine ketone testing strips show I’m in ketosis. So my question for you guys is this: Should I be concerned if I continue to lose scale weight but the body fat percentage is not getting into a healthy range? My rheumatologist is concerned that I’m losing too much weight and wonders if I'm eating enough. How do I convince my doctors that I'm doing okay? Also what body fat percentage should I be shooting for? Thanks so much! My husband and I have learned so much from you and he’s down 25 pounds while getting off his blood pressure medications. We will never go back to the SAD diet ever again. Thanks for your help, Mary HIGH-FAT LOW-CARB, PERFECT MACROS NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 3. Can a ketogenic diet help to heal some very painful hemorrhoids? Hi Jimmy and The Doc, I'm a big fan of your podcast and it’s been a fabulous resource for my keto journey this past year as it has healed my eczema and IBS completely. My question for you is about my husband who is experiencing some very painful hemorrhoids. He eats what he thinks are “healthy choices,” works out six days a week, doesn’t smoke, and drinks on occasion. He also had gallbladder surgery a couple of years ago. I've been trying to get him on board with keto in the hopes it could give him some relief from the hemorrhoid pain. Can a ketogenic diet help him with this? Your input is greatly appreciated! Shirin KETO TALK MAILBOX – Is a lowering of the basal metabolic rate (BMR) from eating a ketogenic diet actually beneficial to longevity? Are “normal” BMR levels too high based on SAD dieters? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Nally, I love the inspiration and support I receive from Keto Talk. Prior to going keto, a dietitian had me on a weight loss diet that included low-fat and calorie-counting. Predictably, I was constantly hungry despite losing weight eating that way. But I couldn’t maintain it and the regain was rapid. The dietitian told me that my metabolism had slowed down meaning I needed to eat less and less calories to start losing weight again. Dr. Nally has said many times that eating too few calories will lower your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and the benefits that come from the restriction of carbohydrates in the context of a well-formulated ketogenic diet. This is probably a much more complex system than we even know, but I wonder if what we regard as a “normal” BMR is different for Ketonians vs. SAD dieters since the BMR test ranges is based on mostly people eating non-keto. This might sound controversial, but what if the ketogenic diet lowers BMR and that helps improve longevity? Could it be that lowering BMR below what is considered “normal” is actually the real normal range for healthy living? I hope this question provokes a potential knowledge spill. South African exercise and sports science professor Timothy Noakes is our guest today in Episode 1289 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore! Imagine if you will growing up with a love for running and later writing what is widely considered as the Bible for runners in your country. You’ve run in marathons and ultramarathons and even delved deeply into the science behind what you believed about endurance exercise. But then you come across the science supporting high-fat, low-carb diets and all of a sudden everything you thought you knew about nutrition was DEAD WRONG! Well, for Professor Timothy Noakes, he doesn’t have to imagine this scenario because this is precisely what happened to him after he read a copy of The New Atkins For A New You! And although he released his 1991 classic Lore Of Running book with multiple editions ever since, Professor Noakes is now recommending people who buy his book to rip out the section he wrote about diet because he no longer believes it is true. WOW! That’s pretty big stuff and the nation of South Africa is taking notice of what this running legend is saying. A full-fledged low-carb, high-fat revolution is underway like what is happening in Sweden right now and the momentum this way of eating is receiving is raising the eyebrows of the nutritional nannies there. “…that’s what medical school does – it teaches you to treat symptoms; it doesn’t teach you to treat a larger cause; it doesn’t teach food as medicine.”Garth Davis, MDThis week marks the return of Garth Davis, MD — a veteran weight loss surgeon who took it upon himself to determine exactly why so many people are plagued by obesity. A quest that led him down a deep research hole to identify the ultimate human diet to maximize and maintain weight loss; optimize human health; and prevent (and even reverse) lifestyle disease — both for himself and his patients (tune in to RRP 50 for our first conversation).About 7 years ago, the good doctor became his own patient. At the time, he was suffering from high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a fatty liver. In other words, he was downright sick; headed towards a future plagued by obesity and chronic illness. Ironic, yes. But not surprising given the demanding hours of the surgeon lifestyle, lack of exercise, a preference for salty, fatty foods, and the convenience of fast food options in the hospital cafeteria. In fact, there was a Wendy's in the University of Michigan hospital where Garth did his internship and residency, resulting in a daily dose of double cheeseburgers — a habit he maintained for years.Let's just say I can relate.Current conventional wisdom in his field is that overweight patients should adopt a very low carb, low to no fruit, high protein diet — hop on board the ketosis bandwagon. Like many, and without inquiring further, Garth simply bought into this idea as truth. He even wrote a book in 2007 advocating this approach to food, called The Experts Guide To Weight Loss Surgery*.The only problem? This approach to diet failed him and many other friends, colleagues and patients. He knew there had to be a better solution. And his patients needed help beyond knee-jerk surgery. Finally ready for a personal change, he took it upon himself to research — truly research — nutrition for the first time. His study became an obsession. The more he delved into the peer reviewed work, the more convinced he became that there is absolutely no legitimate science to back the long-term health claims surrounding the strongly held belief that if we want to be thin and healthy we should eat a high protein low carbohydrate diet. What did he find? If we want to prevent obesity and disease; attain and maintain ideal weight management; and achieve true optimal health and long-term wellness, we need to embrace our inner herbivore.Sound far-fetched? Before you balk, understand that (much like me) adopting a plant-based lifestyle absolutely revolutionized Garth's health beyond what he could have imagined. Not only did he drop the weight that plagued him for years, all of his blood markers suddenly and quite magically normalized. His allergies vanished. His sleep improved, his energy levels skyrocketed and he got off his statin medications. In short, he finally began to walk his talk. As his life began to turn around, he wanted to be an example to his patients. For the first time in his life, he began exercising. Then he did the extraordinary. Despite never having been an athlete, in 2011 he completed Ironman Texas in 12 hours and 6 minutes. His personal results nothing short of extraordinary, Garth has become a crusader intent on teaching people real nutrition. I encourage you to peruse his Facebook page for a litany of highly entertaining and informative r... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Is a low carb, high fat diet the answer for Hyperemesis Gravidarum? Diana had 3 full-term pregnancies with Hyperemesis Gravidarum before her current pregnancy. During this current pregnancy, she was not free of nausea but she has not taken any medicine or vomited even once. The difference? She stuck to the low carb, high fat diet from before conception through to today. There is a lot of controversy about using a ketogenic diet during pregnancy. Some say it's unwise, impossible, and not worth the risk. Others, like Diana, have found it to be a lifesaver. In fact, she said that this pregnancy was the first pregnancy that she did not fear being pregnant and found herself feeling happy. That sounds like a win. I plan to continue to explore this idea. I don't know that it's for everyone and there is very little research done at this point, but some women are trying it out of desperation. Logically, I think the risk is small, but I know that many will disagree with me. I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Audio Question from Jenny: Triathlete with hip dysplasia. Not severe but it does effect her training. She feels a pinching in the front. Squatting over 90 degrees hurts. It effects her all the time (sitting for a long time hurts) even on a rest day. Any particular stretches or exercises that might help. She does the hip flexor stretch and uses a rumble roller (despite it being scary at times). Audio Question from Andre: He has mild left knee pain around the joint. Ran an ultra marathon in Feb and ever since then the pain has gotten better but hasn't gone away. Has runs a lot in the past and never had this issue before. Has a chronically tight IT band. Had an MRI that only detected a tiny Baker Cyst. He wants to do squats and lungs but can't do them or the knee flairs up again. Every time he races it hurts a lot again. He has a few races coming up and wants to get healed. Audio Question from Ty: On the ingredient list, how do you differentiate between a simple and a complex carbohydrate? ~ Ben's Top 10 Healthy Packaged Foods Eve asks: I train for and do Olympic/5150 triathlons. I seem to do well with a hard training efforts over lunch, but if I do a track interval training in the evening for 50-60 min, or even swim intervals, I often mess up my sleep (elevated heartrate, chestpain and restlessness during the night). I'm assuming I have an unfavourable hormonal response - T3 crash, adrenaline to mobilize glycogen etc. I love group training (track and swim) in the evening, but if I cannot get the sleep issue sorted, I have to get back to morning and lunch training. Do you have any ideas on how I can increase my "tolerance" for evening training, except lowering intensity? Kate says: I have been suffering from a pain in my hips and knees whilst running for the past year and have recently visited a Sports Therapist in order to get to the bottom of the problem. He used Muscle Activation Techniques to reduce tension in my body and I could definitely see an improvement after just an hour. I found this technique very strange as he worked on an area in my neck to activate a muscle in my leg. I was wondering whether you have had much experience of MAT and what your thoughts on the technique are? ~ In my response, I mention my MAT podcast interview. Ben writes: What type of milk would you recommend for a child and would that recommendation change based off age? I'm curious about raw milk vs. goats milk vs. almond milk vs. coconut milk. Nadaleen says: I've been trying to follow a low carb high protein diet in order to lose weight (unsuccessful thus far). I did a 4 mile running race this morning and noticed my breath began to really smell during it, and afterwards my husband commented that I needed to brush my teeth. Reading up on it, it seems that it could be either dehydration, ketosis, or someone said if your body doesn't burn fat well, it could be that I'm burning muscle and not fat. I often get shaky during long rides as well, and feel that whatever I eat is not being absorbed by my body. I have noticed as I've switched to protein from carbs that I get less shaky and am also less hungry on long rides. So my body is shifting, I'm just not sure how, whether it is shifting in the right direction, and if I should be more patient with fat loss. Kenny says: Two questions: 1) huub wetsuits - marketing seems like a perfect fit for me. Is it all hype? 2) testosterone - I am 42 year old male and my level's slightly below normal. If I take an over the counter cream or supplement is this going to give me more energy? Make me stronger? Is it considered cheating in my training? Paige asks: Is it possible to cycle ketogenic periods? For example, fasting all night, exercising and then waiting until dinner to break your keto state. If so, would it be beneficial? Or would you benefit just as much from a fasted workout? Would this kind of cycle cause fat gain since you are eating an increased amount during keto state. Also, how could you monitor to know you are in this state? Would the strips be enough or should you monitor other things as well? ~ In my response to Paige, I mention http://www.lowcarbtriathlete.com Jim asks:I have a question about a machine a friend uses - the ENG3. They swear by it (says it helps their lungs and recovery time) but when I looked it up I don't really know what to make of it (except that it's expensive). If you have any info that would be great. They said I could give it a try but I always like to know what up before I jump in. I welcome powerhouse Melanie Avalon to the show for a memorable conversation about all things relating to eating, weight loss, fasting, macronutrient ratios, and much more. One of the most interesting revelations from this episode is that a high fat/low carb diet and a high carb/low fat diet are actually both effective for fat loss, and Melanie explains what it is that makes these two opposing approaches work while being so seemingly different. We also talk about the danger of hyperpalatable foods, and you'll learn what foods to specifically avoid when trying to lose weight. Melanie then offers illuminating commentary on the controversy surrounding excess protein intake: is it dangerous? Is it really going to restrict your lifespan and increase cancer risk?
