The Drop Set: Bodybuilding Discussion on training, nutrition, motivation and more
This week I’m covering what happens after the show — and why the post-show period is one of the most important and most neglected phases of the entire prep cycle. Reverse dieting isn’t just eating more. It’s a structured process of restoring metabolic function, managing the psychological shift that follows a major goal, and setting up the next improvement season correctly. I’ll break down what’s actually happening physiologically after an extended deficit, why the rebound happens and what drives it, and what a well-managed post-show period actually looks like. Then I’m getting into something I see constantly on social media — the reflexive “just steroids” accusation that gets thrown at anyone making real progress. Most physiques people are calling enhanced are completely achievable naturally with good coaching, smart programming, and enough time. I’ve coached people there. The ‘roids card’ has become a lazy way to dismiss hard work from people who have no accurate reference point for what enhanced actually looks like versus what years of dedicated training produces — and I’m going to make that case directly. In this Q&A episode of Life Rewired, Kristina answers some of the most common and relatable questions she receives from her community, covering everything from frustrating fat loss plateaus to hormonal shifts in your late thirties to the ins and outs of reverse dieting and calorie cycling. She also shares her honest take on popular fiber sources like chia seeds and flax seeds, and why she recommends both for gut health, hormone clearance, and blood sugar stability. There were so many great questions submitted that Kristina could not get to all of them in one episode, so stay tuned because a part two is coming. In the meantime, her takeaway throughout this episode is the same one she comes back to with every client. It is never just about the food. It is about understanding your body, building sustainable habits, and giving yourself enough grace to stay in the game for the long run. Are you being told to eat more food to lose weight… but deep down you're confused how eating more could lead to weight loss when you've already gained weight? Reverse dieting, which involves intentionally increasing your calorie intake, is one of the most talked-about yet misunderstood strategies in the fitness space right now. That's exactly why in today's solo episode I'm answering a listener question from Kayla about reverse dieting and whether it's actually necessary for your fat loss journey. We'll cover what reverse dieting is, when it may be appropriate, who it's truly designed for, and why it's not the right approach for everyone. Most importantly, you'll learn whether you actually need to "reverse diet" to lose body fat or not. My goal is to cut through the confusion surrounding this popular trend so you can understand exactly what reverse dieting is and determine whether it makes sense for your goals. Should you bulk, cut, or try to recomposition your body? In this episode of the Mind Pump Podcast, Sal, Adam, and Justin break down one of the most confusing decisions in fitness: when to bulk, when to cut, and when body recomposition actually makes sense. They explain why most people struggle with fat loss long term, why starting with a bulk or reverse diet can actually make fat loss easier, and how building muscle creates the metabolic "runway" needed for sustainable results. The guys discuss the psychological challenges of dieting, the mistakes many trainers make when cutting calories too aggressively, and why recomposition is often a "black belt level" strategy that requires patience and discipline. If you've ever wondered why fat loss plateaus happen, why people regain weight after dieting, or how to structure your nutrition phases properly, this episode breaks it all down. They also explain the reverse dieting process and how gradually increasing calories can rebuild metabolism, improve strength, and set you up for a much more successful fat loss phase later. In this episode of Mind Pump, Sal, Adam, and Justin break down why cutting body fat isn't always the best strategy; especially for women already around 22% body fat, and explain why building muscle often produces a leaner, healthier physique. They discuss the physiological effects of dieting too lean, including hormonal disruptions, reduced metabolism, and performance declines. The conversation also explores strength gains, muscle memory, recovery, sleep optimization, and the surprising cognitive benefits of creatine. Later, the hosts highlight the impact of good coaching and education in the fitness industry while sharing stories from clients seeing life-changing results. In the listener Q&A, they help callers with physique competition prep, weight-loss plateaus, strength programming, postpartum training, and balancing fitness with a newborn. The episode wraps with practical advice on building muscle, improving metabolism, and creating sustainable long-term fitness habits. March Sale ! Samantha Rux joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to talk about broken heart syndrome, reverse dieting to maintain weight loss, and the importance of male friendships for men. OSF Healthcare is highlighting topics vital to community health this month. As February marks Heart Month, OSF St. Luke is urging people to recognize symptoms of “broken heart syndrome,” which can be triggered by intense emotional or physical stress. The hospital's cardiology experts are available for consultation and diagnostic testing, including outpatient exams. OSF is also releasing features on reverse dieting to support sustained weight management after weight loss, with guidance from local dietitians. Another focus is the importance of male friendships in overall well-being, addressed through OSF's behavioral health experts. Further details and stories are available on the OSF Healthcare website and Facebook page.
Research shows over 50% of competitive bodybuilders report body dissatisfaction - and it's strongly linked to disordered eating symptoms. So yeah… we're starting there. In this episode of Boss Bitch Radio, I'm breaking down the real truth about reverse dieting - what it actually is, when it works, when it absolutely does NOT work, and the mistakes I see coaches making over and over again. I'm a retired competitor, an IFBB Pro, and I've been in this world since 2010. I've hired coaches. I've coached competitors. I've watched women completely lose themselves post-show. And I've also BEEN that girl trying to figure out who the hell I was without a competition on the calendar. Because listen… bodybuilding is not real life. And you can still feel hot, strong, and confident without being stage lean.
In Part 2 of this conversation, we're clarifying an important distinction: chronic undereating that leads to biological binge responses is not the same as biblical gluttony.Gluttony is a heart issue — replacing our need for God with food. But many women are not struggling because they love food too much. They're struggling because they've been under-fueling their bodies for years. In this episode, Rachel unpacks:The difference between gluttony and biological survival responsesWhat chronic calorie restriction does to hormones and metabolismWhy restriction often backfires for fat lossWhat reverse dieting is and how it worksWhy slowly increasing calories can restore metabolic trustHow maintenance phases actually support long-term fat lossWhy reverse dieting can be a worshipful act of stewardshipIf you've believed the lie that you must restrict forever to see results, this episode will reframe everything. What You'll LearnWhy gluttony and biological binge cycles are not the same thingHow leptin, ghrelin, cortisol, and thyroid hormones respond to chronic dietingSigns your metabolism may be suppressedWhy eating more strategically can reduce binge urgesHow reverse dieting increases metabolic capacityWhy maintenance is not failure — it's foundationalHow to cycle between maintenance and deficit wiselyScripture Referenced1 Corinthians 6:19–20“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you… You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. This episode features health coach and nurse Michele Miller in conversation with Dr. Erin. They discuss why eating less isn't always the path to better health, how metabolism adapts to prolonged calorie restriction, and the concept of “reverse dieting”—gradually increasing food intake to support energy, hormone balance, and body composition. The conversation emphasizes practical strategies, like eating breakfast and fueling around exercise, while addressing common fears about eating more.
Are reverse diets only for people who've dieted before? Not even close. In this episode, we unpack how reverse dieting supports fat loss, metabolism health, and sustainable weight loss—even if you've never been in a traditional calorie deficit. If you're tracking macros and feeling stuck in a plateau, or wondering why your metabolism seems to have hit the brakes, this is for you. You'll learn the two most common scenarios I see when women need a reverse diet, how metabolic adaptation can sabotage your results, and why reverse dieting might be your most powerful step forward.
If you've been eating “clean” and focusing on high-protein meals but still feel stuck in your weight loss journey… this episode is for you. You'll learn how to support metabolism health, balance hormones, and actually see results using science-backed strategies that go far beyond grilled chicken and sad salads.
Ever wonder if that weekend wine or happy hour cocktail is ruining your progress?
