Revisiting “Done” in Agile: Why a Clear Definition Matters More Than You Think

Develpreneur: Become a Better Developer and Entrepreneur

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 14, 2025 25:41

In this episode of Building Better Developers with AI, Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche revisit their earlier discussion on defining ‘done' in Agile – how to stay on Track and Avoid Scope Creep. They explain why “done” must mean more than “I finished coding,” and they show how a shared Definition of Done (DoD) keeps teams aligned and projects on schedule. What Does “Done” Really Mean? In Agile, “Done” extends beyond writing code. It often includes: Passing unit and integration tests Receiving QA approval Deploying to staging or production Updating documentation Securing acceptance sign-off Without a clear, documented DoD, each team member may interpret “done” differently. As a result, projects risk rework, delays, and frustration. “If we ask, ‘Is it done?' we should get a clear yes or no—no ‘sort of' or ‘almost.'” – Rob Broadhead Why Ambiguity Leads to Trouble Michael points out a common problem: a developer finishes their code, marks the ticket as done, and passes it to QA—only for testers to find gaps in the requirements. A login screen ticket might say “Allow users to log in with username and password.” But does that mean: Username is case-insensitive? Special characters are allowed? Do error messages display on failure? If these details aren't defined, both the developer and tester may interpret “done” differently, leading to frustration on all sides. The Link Between “Done” and Scope Creep Rob and Michael agree: unclear definitions open the door to scope creep. Without a firm DoD, features get stuck in an endless loop of revisions: Developers feel QA keeps moving the goalposts. QA feels developers aren't meeting the requirements. Clients think the delivered feature isn't what they expected. Over time, this erodes trust and pushes delivery dates further into the future. Lessons from the Field Michael contrasts two scenarios from his career that highlight the power of a strong Definition of Done. Before an acquisition, his team worked with a crystal-clear DoD. Every ticket had precise requirements, clear acceptance criteria, and well-defined testing steps. As a result, tasks finished on time, testing followed a predictable pattern, and rework was rare. The team knew exactly when work met the agreed standards, and stakeholders trusted that “done” truly meant done. After the acquisition, the situation changed dramatically. Tickets became vague and massive in scope, often resembling open-ended “make it work” directives. Multiple teams modified the same code simultaneously, resulting in merge conflicts, inconsistent results, and unpredictable delivery schedules. Without a clear DoD, developers, testers, and stakeholders all had different ideas of what completion looked like, and work frequently circled back for revisions. The difference between the two environments came down to one factor: a clear and enforceable Definition of done. In the first scenario, it acted as a shared contract for quality and completion. In the second, the lack of it created confusion, wasted effort, and missed deadlines. Building a Strong Definition of Done The hosts outline key components every DoD should include: Code complete and reviewed – Ensures quality and shared understanding. Automated tests passing – Reduces regressions. Documentation updated – Prevents future confusion. Deployment verified – Proves it works in the target environment. Acceptance criteria signed off – Confirms alignment with the original requirements. Pro Tip: Keep your tests fresh—don't just update them to pass without meeting the real requirement. Who Owns the DoD? One person doesn't own the DoD—it's a team responsibility. Product owners, Scrum Masters, and developers should collaborate to create and update it, reviewing it regularly to adapt to evolving project needs. Making “Done” Part of the Process Once defined, your DoD should be visible and integrated into your workflow: Add it to user stories during sprint planning. Track it in tools like Jira, Trello, or GitHub. Use workflow stages that match your DoD steps—coding, testing, review, deployment, and sign-off. Michael emphasizes that personal accountability matters just as much as team accountability. Great developers hold themselves to the DoD without needing reminders. Your Challenge: Define “Done” This Week If your team doesn't have a documented Definition of Done—or if it's been more than three months since you reviewed it—set aside time this week to: Write down your current DoD. Identify where ambiguity still exists. Get agreement from the entire team. Update your workflow so that every ticket must meet the DoD before it is closed. This single step can prevent months of wasted effort and ensure your work delivers exactly what's intended. The Bigger Picture A well-defined DoD is more than a checklist—it's your guardrail against wasted effort and shifting goals. It ensures the final product matches what the client truly needs, not just what was coded. Your Definition of Done is your “why” for each task—it keeps your work focused, aligned, and valuable. In this groundbreaking episode of Menopause Mastery, Dr. Betty Murray sits down with Dr. Daved Rosensweet—a physician with 55 years of experience who has been fighting for women's hormone rights since before most of us were born—to break down the game-changing FDA meeting that happened last week. For the first time in decades, the FDA is considering removing the black box warning from estrogen that has terrorized women and doctors for over 20 years. Dr. Rosensweet calls it "the biggest healthcare mistake of our time," and he's not wrong—this false warning has kept millions of women from life-saving hormone therapy. But here's what the media isn't telling you: the science has ALWAYS shown that women on hormones have LESS risk of breast cancer, heart attack, and stroke than women who go untreated. Yes, you read that right—LESS risk, not more. Dr. Rosensweet and Dr. Betty dive deep into why compounding bioidentical hormones are the gold standard, how to find the right provider, and why every woman—regardless of age—deserves to investigate hormone therapy. They also tackle the controversial topic of testosterone for women and why it's not a "male hormone" but a human hormone essential for muscle preservation and brain health. This is the Progress Powering Tomorrow. Allen Hall: Jeremy, welcome back to the show. Thanks for having me. Well, the recent changes in the IRA bill are. Pushing a lot of projects forward very quickly at the moment, and as we're learning, there's a number of safe harbor blades sitting in yards and a rush to manufacture blades to get them up and meet the, uh, treasury department's criteria for, for being started, whatever that means. At the moment, I think we're gonna see a big question about the quality of the blades, and it seems to me. The cheapest time to quickly [00:01:00] look at your blaze before you start to hang them is while they're still on the ground. And to get some n DT experience out there to make sure that what you're hanging is appropriate. Are you starting to see that push quite yet? No, not not at  Jeremy Heinks: the level we'd like to see it. Um, as far as getting the inspections in, yeah, we have been seeing the push to get the, get these blades out. Uh, but, uh, the, the, the few that we have been able to get our eyes on aren't looking good. The quality definitely down. And we've just had a customer site come back with some, some findings that were surprising for a brand new blade that hasn't been the up tower yet and in use. So, um, it is much easier for us to get the, uh, technology and the personnel to a blade that's on the ground. It's cheaper, it's quicker. We can go through many, many more blades, uh, with inspections. Uh, it's just access is just easier. Always comes down to access.  Joel Saxum: That customer that you had there, like what was their [00:02:00]driver? Right? Did they feel the pain at some point in time? Did they, did they have suspicions of something not right? New factory? Like, I don't know. Why would some, why is someone picking that over someone? Not because like you said, overwhelmingly. The industry doesn't really do this. You know, even just getting visual inspections of blades on the ground before they get hung is tough sometimes with construction schedules and all these different things, moving parts. So you had someone that actually said, Hey, we want to NDT these blades. What was their driver behind that?  Jeremy Heinks: So we, uh, we had done a previous, uh, route of inspections on some older ative of theirs that were,  Speaker 5: um,  Jeremy Heinks: getting. Kinda along in the tooth, if you will. Uh, so they've added some experience. They saw what we could bring to the table as far as results and, and, and information and data on those blades. Uh, and it all turned out to be, um, pretty reliable. So, um, you know, we educated them on, you know, if you have new blades coming in or even use the blades coming in for replacement, that it's not a bad idea to get at least a, a sample it. And, uh, [00:03:00] basically that's what they call us in to do. They had some brand new blades come in. For some new turbines they're putting up. And, uh, they wanted the sampling. We did a sampling and the sample showed that, uh, they have an issue of these, these brand new blades.  Joel Saxum: So, okay, so what happens then? Right?

Experiment with themed events (e.g., “Foam Olympics” fundraisers). Adjust your branding and messaging to match the target demographic. 7. Lessons in Entrepreneurship: Balancing Family, Passion, and Business Kori's journey is a testament to the power of reinvention. After 20 years as a teacher, she pivoted to entrepreneurship during the pandemic, seeking flexibility and joy. Key Lessons Follow your happiness:** Don't let fear of judgment hold you back. Seasonal balance:** Bubble Bash is full-time from May to October, allowing Kori to “hibernate” and recharge in the off-season. Family first:** Kori proudly identifies as a mom above all, structuring her business around her children's needs. Expert Insight:   Entrepreneurship is about designing a life that fits your values. Don't be afraid to pivot, and keep your options open for future opportunities. 8. Actionable Tips for Hosting a Memorable Foam or Bubble Party Ready to bring the Bubble Bash experience to your next event? This episode reveals how fasting is the most powerful tool for preventing cardiovascular disease and reversing metabolic dysfunction that affects 88% of Americans. Dr. Scott and Tommy explain why fasting goes far beyond weight loss to address the root cause of heart disease: insulin resistance and dangerous blood sugar variability. Discover how consistent fasting protocols can dramatically reduce your risk when every 1% increase in A1C levels raises heart problems by 12%, major cardiovascular events by 8%, and heart-related kidney issues by 17%. Learn why diabetics with the highest blood sugar swings face 2.5 times higher heart disease risk - and how fasting flattens these dangerous glucose spikes. The hosts break down how fasting reverses metabolic syndrome (affecting 25% of the population) and helps the 70-80 million undiagnosed pre-diabetics who have normal A1C but dangerously high fasting insulin levels. Understand how fasting prevents the "rust on a bumper" effect of cardiovascular disease that develops slowly over decades. Get specific fasting strategies for reducing glycemic variability, controlling insulin spikes, and using intermittent fasting as cardiovascular protection. This episode reveals why monitoring fasting insulin during your fasting journey is more important than cholesterol panels, and how consistent fasting protocols reverse the inflammatory cascade leading to heart disease, stroke, and metabolic syndrome. If you—or someone you know—are training hard 6–7 days a week but not seeing the progress you expect, this episode is for you. Andrew explains why piling on more volume or sessions can actually stall your progress, especially when recovery and quality are overlooked. He breaks down the principles of general adaptation and supercompensation, reminding us that adaptation only happens when training is paired with adequate recovery. In today's world of well-rounded training programs, adding more often leads to redundancy and overlapping stressors that the body can't effectively adapt to. The solution? Focus on quality over quantity and make sure every session has purpose.Whether you're an athlete, coach, or serious about performance, this episode challenges you to reframe how you approach your workload. Progress doesn't come from doing more—it comes from doing better and recovering smarter. Tune in to hear Andrew's insights and apply them to elevate your training game. Enjoy the episode!

Episode Overview Andy reads Chapter 1 from his new book, "The Inappropriate Guide to Buying An Engagement Ring" - a no-bullshit diamond and ring buying guide for guys who'd rather be anywhere else than a jewelry store. This episode covers the single most important piece of advice for buying an engagement ring without getting screwed over. Key Takeaways The Golden Rule: Find a jewelry store where you feel comfortable going. That's it. That's the secret. Why This Matters: Walking into most jewelry stores feels unnatural for guys Everything's behind glass, salespeople hover like vultures You suddenly don't know what to do with your hands It's a special kind of hell for men who've fallen in love Finding Your Unicorn Jewelry Store: Ask friends who actually know you and get your style Search for independent jewelers online Check their reviews, website, and social media Look for their vibe - stuffy/formal vs. laid back/approachable How to Find Your "Guy on the Inside" Three Methods: Email the store - Tell them you need help. If the response feels too formal or generic, move on. Call them - A good jeweler on the phone is like a good first date - there's either chemistry or there isn't. Walk in and get down to business - Most terrifying but nothing beats face-to-face. You'll know within 5 minutes if it's your place. What Your "Guy" Should Do Ask questions about her taste and what you want to give her Address your budget head-on (it's part of the equation) Guide you like that bartender who remembers your drink and steers you toward the good stuff Make you feel like a human being, not a walking wallet with commitment issues Andy's Controversial Advice When it feels right - buy it. Don't do the "I need to look around" dance that fear makes you think you have to do. When it clicks, it clicks. Pull the trigger and be done with it. Why this works: Saves weeks of second-guessing Prevents comparing minute details that won't matter in 5 years You don't need to become a diamond expert - you need someone you trust who does this for a living The Bottom Line Find a jewelry store where you don't feel like you're standing there with your zipper open (but check that before you go in, just to be safe). Connect with someone who speaks your language, not "diamond-ese." When it feels right, trust your gut and pull the trigger. About the Book "The Inappropriate Guide to Buying An Engagement Ring" is available on Amazon. Andy is creating an audio version while keeping the podcast going by reading chapters on the show. At the point of common coupling. Allen Hall: That's correct. And your prior experiences with ge, which is now GE Renova down in South Carolina, that's correct. But you were involved, maybe give a brief description of the things you're working on because when electrical people talk, um, kind of gets lost in translation. You were knee deep, maybe waist deep, maybe eyeballs deep and electrical  Joseph Chacon: power at GE Renova? No, not, not knee deep, not weight deep, waist deep. I was baptized, completely immersed all the way in. I came shortly after the Enron acquisition. Um, I was one of the electrical engineering managers at the time. We had, uh, I think two or three at the time. Um, this was pretty early on. Uh, I got out of that because, uh, I'm, I like management, but I, I like electrical engineering, so I wanted to go back to being an individual contributor. Um, so I've touched just about [00:02:00] every electrical thing you can think of in a wind turbine. And also in solar  Joel Saxum: as well. You know, a little bit of a sidebar here 'cause I want, we want to definitely get into this deep technical conversation, but Joe, you touched on something that happens to people, right? You're a really good engineer, you've run a team, you've solved some problems. So now you get promoted to management, but you don't get to engineer as much anymore. So you get, like, you get, you start being leadership and like doing all these things, how to manage people, how to run a team, this, that, and that's great. We need that. The industry, every industry globally, we need to be able to do those things. But for engineers that have engineer at heart, and I'm, I'm also looking at you, Alan Hall. Uh, they, they wanna be able to engineer, right? They wanna be able to do stuff to make a difference to, to, to get hands on with a problem. So, so you, so you've done that though, right? That that's you, you are now, uh, Josh Shahan is, uh, pad LLC and  Joseph Chacon: pod is short for Padre, which is what my kids and grandchildren call me. They just shortened it from Padre to podge. 'cause saying two [00:03:00]syllables was too much and I liked it.  Joel Saxum: Yeah, I like that. Okay, so, so, so like we said, uh, you, you, you guys, you're getting deep into harmonics and other issues. You get called in by Solar Farms to solve problems and, and this is the thing Alan and I were kind of talking about off air a little bit is.

Allen Hall: ONYX Insight's ecoPITCH monitoring system has become crucial for wind farm operators facing blade root insert failures. These failures start invisibly but can end catastrophically with blades detaching completely. This week we speak with Forrest French Senior Project Engineer, and Martin McLarnon, sales Director for North America at ONYX Insight. Their ecoPITCH system detects dangerous movements before visible signs appear as Forest notes in the interview. By the time you can get a feeler gauge measurement, it's probably too late. So join us to discover how data-driven monitoring is helping operators make smarter maintenance decisions preventing million dollar disasters and keeping turbines spinning safely. Welcome to Uptime Spotlight, shining Light on Wind. Energy's brightest innovators. This is the progress powering tomorrow. Allen Hall: Martin and Forest. Welcome to the [00:01:00] show. Hello. How's it going? Thanks for letting us. Yeah, we're really interested to, to talk to you today just because there's so many blade root issues from pitch bearings and blade bushings or inserts as they're called sometimes, and a number of other issues. And when we talk to operators, what they tell us is, oh, we, you use ecoPITCH. And they love that system. But I want to, I wanna back up first and talk about what are some of the operators experiencing out there in the field And ecoPITCH system was originally developed to look at pitch bearing problems and forests. What are some of those pitch bearing problems you're seeing out in the field today? Forrest French: Yeah, so it, it, it's a funny story. It was originally developed for pitch bearing, uh, applications. Um, the industry as a whole started experiencing this root insert issue, so we were able to, we were kind of in a perfect position, right? It was, it was a, it was a [00:02:00] really serendipitous thing that we, we had just developed this product and we could easily pivot. To measure both the pitch bearing and this root insert issue. Uh, the, the pitch bearing issues are admittedly the, the more difficult, uh, issue, right? To measure. Um, there's, there's some, some great opportunities for value and there's also some really good challenges to come along with that. Um, pitch bearings, uh, they, they don't rotate quickly. Right. Uh, when, when we talk about typical CMS typical vibration monitoring, you're looking at a very, very fast rotating, uh, shaft or bearing, et cetera, and you're able to pick up on those frequencies as they revolve. You don't get that with a pitch bearing. It's a very slow moving, uh, slewing bearing. Um, so picking up. Noise through vibration can be very difficult, uh, because again, you don't get that frequency of that [00:03:00] rotation, so you're left with nothing but uh, a bunch of noise. Right. And you're hoping that that noise floor is low enough that you might capture a bit of crunching of cage material or anything like that? Right. The alternative in what, in what we use ecoPITCH for is it's very simple. We, we point a an inductive displacement sensor right at the pitch bearing itself. Typically the inner ring, depending on the type of turbine. And what we're looking for is any kind of slop or displace...

Benjamin Netanyahu's government may have announced plans to intensify its Gaza offensive and call up thousands of reservists – but "many Israelis, and especially the IDF top brass, are actually hoping that President [Donald] Trump will again intervene and reach some kind of deal," Haaretz senior security analyst Amos Harel said on the Haaretz Podcast. Pressure from the American president will be the only way Netanyahu can resist the "huge political pressure to proceed" with the escalation and a long-term military presence in Gaza placed on him by far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, Harel said. "Unless Trump decides to intervene, we might be facing a massive military operation, and in my view, that would be a disaster." Speaking with podcast host Allison Kaplan Sommer, Harel assessed the war's multiple fronts in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iran, emphasizing that in nearly every case, the will – and whims – of the U.S. president plays a decisive role. "It's quite clear that Trump is less interested than before and talks less about the Palestinian conflict and the Gaza Riviera idea – it may be because he fears failure there. He seems to prefer to invest his time and efforts in the Saudis, Emiratis, and Qataris who are offering him trillions of dollars in deals in weapons or technology. This is what Trump is focused on."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
