For many years, Penn State was just one college of many with a powerful football program. And then not too long ago, it suddenly became the epicenter of a whole lot of outrage. Screaming students - angry that Joe Paterno, their iconic coach - the "winning-est" college coach ever - had been summarily fired. And then the parents, the politicians, the pundits, enraged as they should be, at allegations of young lives ruined by sexual abuse. Allegedly by a coach who used a locker room as a place to horribly exploit young boys. All of which has caused me to ask this question, "So what is it that enrages you, Ron? Or should?" I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Your Things to Die For." My friend Bob asks, "What are your 'things to die for'?" He confesses that his list has changed. It used to be a list of legalistic "don'ts" that he thought were the causes worth fighting for. Not anymore. God has broken his heart for people who are going to hell instead of people who are breaking the rules. And he's outraged over the devil enslaving and damning people God created and Jesus died for. There's something about us that gets all uptight about things that matter a little and largely complacent about things that break and even enrage the heart of God. We can really get up a head of steam about worship music, or liberals, or Christians who are "different," or the way the culture's going downhill. But then we can be strangely unmoved by young girls who suddenly disappear into the snake pit of sexual slavery. Or children who cry every night for food that never comes. A woman living with a man she thought loved her, and tonight fearing for her life. Innocent kids, unspeakably twisted and scarred by someone who abuses them for their own gratification. Our word for today from the Word of God talks about these outrages in Romans 1:18 - outrages that provoke what the Bible calls the "wrath of God (which) is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men." Things He can't stand; He can't stand for the victimizing of any person He created in His holy image. Proverbs says, "He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God" (Proverbs 14:31). God talks about defending the cause of the poor and the needy and then He asks probingly, "Is not this what it means to know Me?" (Jeremiah 22:16). Above all, the Bible says, "He is not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). And we're surrounded by people who are one heartbeat away from perishing forever and ever, because no one told them about the Savior who perished so they wouldn't have to. God accepts no excuse for failing to (as the Bible says) "rescue those being led away to death...If you say, 'But we knew nothing about this,' does not He who weighs the heart perceive it...Will He not repay each person according to what he has done?" (Proverbs 24:11-12). God is not deaf to the shattered lives, the anguished cries of a world that sin has devastated. God says today as He said to Moses in Exodus, "I have heard them crying out...I am concerned about their suffering...So I have come down to rescue them." Oh good! God's going to do something about all this hurt and lostness. Yes He is, and He has a plan. Listen to the next verse, "So, now, go. I am sending you" (Exodus 3:7-10). So, are the things you'll "die for" the things Jesus died for?

Text: Proverbs 14:31-33 (ESV) 31 Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him. 32 The wicked is overthrown through his evildoing, but the righteous finds refuge in his death. 33 Wisdom rests in the heart of a man of understanding, but it makes itself known even in the midst of fools. HELPING THE POOR IS HONORING GOD Solomon was extremely rich (1 Kings 10:23). Yet, he had compassion for the needy and cautioned that oppressing the poor was a serious sin, even an "insult" towards God. The word ‘oppresses' implies fraud, violation, extortion, or taking advantage of others. To treat the needy in an abusive way offends or assaults God's creative work. The word "insults" means "taunts" or even "blasphemes." The poor, as all human beings, are created in God's image (Gen 1:27) Thus, they are equally valuable before God's eyes(Gal 3:28). Hence, helping those who are genuinely poor financially or materially shows reverence for God as the creator of all mankind (Mat 10:42; 25:40, 45). The wicked will end his life miserably. His evildoings are reasons for God's judgment. When God judges him, he has no defense. This will happen during the great white throne judgment so that all the guilty will find no hiding place. (Rev 20:11–15) In contrast, the Lord promised not to leave or forsake the righteous.[heb 13:5] The Lord is with the righteous even when they walk through dangers and discouragements of life (Psa 23:4). Death is an open door for the righteous to enter in and experience God's splendor. The apostle Paul testifies that for a believer death is gain and to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.[ Phil 1:21, 2 Cor 5:8] Solomon reiterated that a person of understanding has wisdom securely stationed in their heart.[v.33] This implies two things. First, that this wisdom is stable, present, and sure. Second, that wisdom is not in a hurry to draw attention to itself, that is, it is "resting," not "boiling," inside the understanding person. It makes him humble. It manifests itself in his attitudes towards his circumstances and relationships. They are unlike the fools who boast about their knowledge although they have none. Indeed, the wise is like the silent waters that runs deep. Listen and FOLLOW us on our podcast ------------------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram

There's a reason why most sons grow up wanting to be like their dads either for good or ill. God intends for fathers and mothers to serve as examples of wisdom to the malleable minds of children. When the core unit of the family loses wisdom rooted in the fear of the Lord all of society begins to disintegrate. Proverbs frames wisdom not as an esoteric knowledge passed on by a spiritual guru to his devoted followers or a set of abstract principles taught within the confines of a university, but as practical knowledge imparted from a father to a son. Our parents aren't perfect, but they do serve as an analogy of God's fatherhood over us. He disciplines us because he loves us, and unlike our earthly parents, his discipline is always right and perfectly attuned to our need. When we entrust ourselves to the fatherhood of God we become like his son, Jesus Christ who embodies the wisdom of God in the flesh. That's why getting a grasp on the fatherhood of God is so essential to growing our faith and trust in his words. This is Understanding Proverbs. The book of Proverbs is nothing less than a collection of timeless truisms and wisdom for life, but it is so much more than that. The pinnacle of Soloman's wisdom can be summed up in one phrase "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom."In this series, "Fearing Deity and Defying Stupidity" We'll seek to gain wisdom from this book but also dive into how it relates to the embodiment of wisdom... Passing on the Wisdom of God (Proverbs 5-7)
In Pastor Mike Burnette's sermon, he underscores the significance of heeding God's warning signs, as highlighted in Proverbs 4:14-15, urging us to stay within the boundaries set by God. Reflecting on these verses, he challenges listeners to guard their hearts, eyes, mouths, and paths, ensuring alignment with God's direction. Through steps like devotion to Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, and repentance, Pastor Mike guides us in establishing healthy practices and boundaries, urging them to align their lives with God's will and avoid straying into areas of temptation and disobedience.
The passage for today is Proverbs 17:3. It says, "The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests hearts." This verse tells us that God tests our hearts to show us what we are made of. He does this by allowing us to go through difficult situations. When we face these challenges, we have the opportunity to respond in a way that reflects our true character. God tests our hearts to help us grow and become more like Him. When we allow Him to refine us, we become stronger and more resilient. We also learn to trust Him more and to rely on His strength. If you are going through a difficult time, remember that God is testing your heart. He is not trying to punish you, but to help you grow. Trust in Him and allow Him to work in your life. He will bring you through this and make you stronger than ever before. Remember, God is always with you and He will never leave you or forsake you.
The passage for today is Proverbs 15:8. It says, "The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is his delight." This verse tells us that God is pleased with the prayers of the righteous. This means that when we pray to God with a sincere heart, He is happy to hear from us. Prayer is a powerful way to connect with God and to experience His love and peace. It is also a way to ask God for help and guidance in our lives. Let's all make an effort to pray more often. Let's talk to God about everything that is on our minds and hearts. He is always listening and He is always ready to help us. Prayer is a gift from God. Let's all take advantage of this gift and make it a regular part of our lives.
The passage for today is Proverbs 5:21. It says, "For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he watches all his paths." This means that God is always watching us and he knows everything we do. We should live our lives in a way that pleases God, knowing that he is always watching. We should not do anything that we would be ashamed of if God saw it. We should also be thankful for God's constant presence in our lives. He is always there to help us and guide us. We can trust him with our lives and know that he will never leave us or forsake us. Let us live our lives for God's glory, knowing that he is always watching and that he loves us very much.
In Proverbs chapter 2, verses 1-5, we learn how to discover the knowledge of God. The author tells us that we must receive God's words and treasure his commandments within us. We must make our ear attentive to wisdom and incline our heart to understanding. If we do these things, we will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God. The author reminds us that the beginning of knowledge is the fear of the Lord. When we receive God's words and treasure his commandments, we are putting ourselves in a position to understand the knowledge of God. We are also given the opportunity to be a blessing to the people we work with. Let's turn our lives to listening to and trusting God so that we can be his instrument in every interaction we have today.

Hey, it's Mike Henry with Follower of One. Today, I want to read a very convicting verse to me. This is a conviction to me, and that's part of the reason why I want to read it. I think it's a challenge to all of us, especially in business, but in any type of work. Proverbs 16:9, “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” I've been working for the last few days, doing some strategic planning around the growth of what I hope the growth will be for Follower of One, and bathing that in prayer and asking God for his direction, for his wisdom and his guidance. And then I would turn right around and get something- we'd get interrupted. And what I thought I would be spending my time doing X, I ended up having to spend my time doing Y. The Lord directs my steps. He ordains interruptions and circumstances and things that happen in my life, and I often don't like it. I've just become a pouty little child because God's not letting me do what I wanted to do. The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. I pray constantly. I don't pray constantly. That's an exaggeration. I pray regularly. That I would be easier to interrupt, that I would trust God more. My natural instinct is to get angry at interruptions, not to trust God that He would have me do something else. Almost every interruption, almost everything that takes longer than I thought it would take, ends up being a blessing to me, if I would just trust Jesus and do what He says. Today in our workplaces, I would like to challenge you: let's remember the mind of a man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. And now let me say that exactly correctly. I'm reading from the New American standard, the mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. I don't really think that references all that gender-oriented. I think, male or female, we can get all wrapped up in our own goals and objectives and we forget God, but the Lord directs our steps. He's the one directing us. He's the one choosing what we do. I want to plan to do what God has for me to do, and that means my plans must include interruptions. My plans, and my attitude must be good with interruptions, because God is sovereign. He's the one choosing the plan. We have a person on one of the recent mission trips talking about how she had it all planned out that she was going to do her fastest exercise time walking through her neighborhood, but she couldn't get any of her timer apps to work, and she was very frustrated about that. So she took off anyway and she got interrupted a couple of times on the way and had opportunities to interact with her neighbors, that she never would have done had she had the timer ticking. And it was just God saying, no, you're walking around the neighborhood today, but I want you to interact with the people that you come into contact with. I think God does that with my schedule. That I wire it tight as a drum, and I'm always in a hurry, and I always have to hurry up and get to the next thing. And then an interruption will occur, or something will take longer, or something will need to be redone. Lord, may I please have an attitude of openness to you. And I pray that we all do. That openness and that willingness to be God's person in our situation is what makes our faith attractive to the people around us. I hope today that this criticism of myself, this challenge I'm giving myself is beneficial to you in some way. Let's be the people that Jesus calls on today to make a difference in the lives of our coworkers and bank on it, that will require some interruptions. Thank you for being a marketplace minister, and thank you for making a difference with your faith. Don't forget if you're interested in more of this content, check us out at followerofone.org. 192 – Have you ever known someone who worried about almost everything?Or have you ever been that person, that just couldn't help worrying about stuff? This week's episode dives into Jesus's solution to overcoming being a worrywart. It's all about embracing his promise that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Here are some of the key things this week:To quit worrying is about trusting God (Proverbs 3:5, 6, of course)You have to quit trying to manipulate people and circumstances to get what you wantWhat are the consequences of the kingdom of heaven being at hand? How to get rid of the fear that keeps us from trusting GodFind out what my friend Eunice quit worrying when there was no money and she didn't have one crumb of food to feed her family the day before Thanksgiving What does it really mean to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness? You can't just quote Scriptures and think that will solve the problemSome people think they're praying, when actually they're just worryingThe way to stop worrying, is to seek and find the kingdom of heaven at hand, to experience being in God's presence. Jesus would not tell us to seek this kingdom if we couldn't find it. The implication is that we can be conscious right now of heaven's presence and dwell there. In heaven there's nothing to worry about. And that is where you dwell. You have everything you need and God is in complete control. Today's Scripture: PROVERBS 30:18-19 Three things are too wonderful for me; four I do not understand: the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a virgin.
Today's Scripture: PROVERBS 30:7-9 Two things I ask of you; deny them not to me before I die: 8 Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, 9 lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.
