In Malachi 3:13-18, the Israelites complained that God was blessing wicked people and righteous people were struggling. Because of this, they concluded that serving God didn't matter. We are exploring Malachi 2:13-16 and Proverbs 5:15-19. In these scriptures, God admonishes older married men to enjoy the wife of their youth and not to divorce them for younger women. The insight we are processing is that our wives will physically change as they age, and regardless of their age, we should still see them just as beautiful as the day we married them. Office hours started with a discussion about adjusting the schedule for office hours due to Pastor Amos's conflict with Morehouse College, with the group leaning toward moving to Tuesday at 7 p.m. Pastor Amos shared his thoughts on possibly restarting a weekly Bible study and developing a pre-engagement or pre-marriage course, with input from Anya, Stephanie, and others on naming and marketing the program. The group discussed challenges in relationships, the impact of social media on marriage, and the importance of addressing pain points in dating and marriage preparation. Genesis 1–3 reveals God as the purposeful Creator who formed the world in an orderly way, declared His creation very good, and created mankind in His image to live in relationship with Him and steward His creation. Mankind was given meaningful work, marriage, companionship, and responsibility as part of God's original design, with obedience to God at the center of life and flourishing. However, Satan introduced deception and doubt about God's Word, leading the woman to be deceived and Adam to knowingly disobey God. Through sin came spiritual death, separation from God, shame, fear, broken relationships, difficulty in work and childbirth, corruption in creation, and ultimately physical death. Yet God's response to the fall revealed both justice and mercy: He cared for Adam and Eve in their fallen condition, prevented them from living forever in that condition, and promised that the offspring of the woman would ultimately defeat Satan. Office hours began with a discussion on biblical perspectives about marriage. Stephanie asked about friends who were considering having a wedding ceremony without going through the government, which led to an extensive conversation about the importance of legal marriage documentation and avoiding living in falsehood. The conversation then shifted to spiritual topics, including whether demonic spirits can inhabit inanimate objects. Pastor Amos explained that, while Scripture provides no precedent for demons possessing objects, evil spirits can influence people and may become associated with or follow certain objects. For Christians who desire marriage, a healthy relationship can move from dating to engagement within a year through intentional discernment. Begin with three months of exclusive dating focused solely on getting to know one another without making marriage commitments. If the relationship shows clear potential, continue with six weeks to three months of premarital counseling with a trusted pastor or counselor to evaluate biblical, emotional, and practical compatibility. At the conclusion of counseling, make a mutual decision about whether to pursue marriage. Once both people have agreed, set a wedding date, and then the proposal can serve as a joyful celebration of a decision that has already been made together—not as the moment the decision is first introduced. Pastor Amos provided insights on focusing on one's calling, referencing 1 Corinthians, and shared his experience using AI to design a course. We are exploring Mark 5:35-42. In this passage, a 12-year-old girl dies while Jesus is on His way to heal her. After the father hears the bad news, Jesus tells him, "Be not afraid, only believe." The main revelation we are going to process from this text is that when we receive bad news about our vision, we are to not be afraid, but only believe. Fear often rises when obstacles threaten the vision God has given us. For example, Jesus told His disciples to go to the other side of the lake by boat, but they allowed the storm to overshadow His promise and questioned whether He cared for them. Their fear exposed a lack of trust in His word rather than the size of the storm. Jesus demonstrated His authority by calming the wind and the waves, reminding them that faith is anchored in who He is, not in favorable circumstances. Marriage often brings moments of deep joy, but it can also bring disappointment when our spouse falls short of meeting our expectations or fulfilling their responsibilities. Applying this principle to marriage, we see that our faithfulness to the marriage covenant is not determined by our spouse's behavior but by our obedience to God. Believers are required to remain committed to loving, serving, and honoring their spouse despite disappointment, following the example of Christ, who suffered without retaliation and entrusted Himself to the Father. Jesus borrowed Peter's boat to teach the crowds, and after preaching, He instructed Peter to launch into deep water and let down his nets. Everything Peter knew as an experienced fisherman—and all the data from that night's failed efforts—told him it was pointless. They had fished all night, caught nothing, and were already cleaning their nets to go home. From a natural perspective, Jesus was a carpenter, not a fisherman, and His instruction contradicted both experience and expertise. Yet Peter chose obedience over evidence, saying, "Nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net." His obedience produced a miraculous catch that exceeded every expectation. This example teaches that while data and past experiences can inform us, they should never have the final authority over God's word. God revealed a clear and specific vision for Abraham and Sarah: they would become the parents of many nations through a son born to them together. Even after reaffirming His covenant and changing their names to reflect their future, Abraham allowed his natural limitations—his age and Sarah's barrenness—to shape his expectations. Instead of embracing God's promise, he suggested that Ishmael fulfill the vision, attempting to reduce God's plan to something that seemed more realistic. But God refused to lower His promise to match Abraham's doubts. He affirmed that while Ishmael would be blessed, His covenant would come through Isaac, the promised son. This example reminds us that God's vision is not determined by our limitations. God's calling on your life requires unwavering trust in His timing and direction. Abram's failure reminds us that the advice of your spouse should never take priority over the clear direction God has given you. While a spouse's counsel is valuable, it must always be tested against God's will. Samuel's journey to anoint the next king reminds us that God's calling often begins with clear direction but unfolds one step at a time. Although God told Samuel to go to Bethlehem, He did not immediately reveal who the next king would be. Samuel had to trust God through the process, resist relying on his own assumptions, and patiently wait for God's confirmation. This example teaches that following our calling requires obedience before clarity, a willingness to let go of past disappointments, and confidence that God sees beyond outward appearances to the heart. I am a strong believer of staying focused and not deviating from your calling, because focused pursuits over time bring success. Whereas, deviations from your path slow down your calling to a standstill. However, we also have Holy Spirit inside us who knows how to navigate the ups and downs of a calling. This means that there may be seasons when Holy Spirit will direct you to take an anointed deviation that may appear to break your focus. The difference between an anointed deviation verses a self-appointed deviation is that an anointed deviation does not slow down the success of your calling. God gives us assignments that are for a moment, season, or lifetime. As we are doing an assignment, we may not know which time frame it falls into. Therefore, it is important to stay connected to Holy Spirit and not assume an assignment from God is forever so that we can be open to hearing if (or when) a change in assignment comes. Many married people are frustrated because their spouse doesn't believe in or support their vision. Why? Because God gave you the vision, not your spouse. Your faith has been activated to see something that doesn't exist yet, so you can believe the vision without seeing proof. However, your spouse may not have received a word from God about it, so they don't have a basis for faith yet, which means they will need to see some tangible proof. In John 7, Jesus demonstrates the importance of discerning the right time, season, and place for your calling. Although His brothers pressured Him to go publicly to Jerusalem and prove Himself, Jesus refused to be influenced by people who did not believe in His assignment, recognizing that His time had not yet fully come. He did not recklessly put Himself or His mission in danger just to prove a point. In the same way, just because God has placed something in your heart does not mean you should immediately pursue it publicly or at full force. Some assignments require you to remain in the background, move quietly, or pivot as the Holy Spirit leads until the right time comes. Your calling unfolds through many decisions, both small and large, making it essential to clearly hear and correctly interpret the voice of God. While God may initiate extraordinary forms of communication through audible voices, visions, dreams, angels, or other people, believers can consistently recognize His direction through their born-again spirit as their minds are renewed by His Word. Learning to hear God requires distinguishing His simple, God-honoring voice from our own complex, self-focused thoughts, trusting His provision rather than interpreting His direction through scarcity, and patiently allowing Him to confirm what He is saying. It also requires proper theology and a biblical worldview, because wrong beliefs and worldly thinking can cause us to misinterpret even what we have clearly heard. Everything recorded in the Bible is truthfully reported, but not every statement spoken by people in Scripture should be accepted as doctrine. The book of Job demonstrates this principle. Job and his friends made many sincere statements about God, yet God later rebuked their words as lacking understanding. By comparing Job's statements with the broader teaching of Scripture, we discover that Satan is the one who steals, kills, and destroys, while God is the giver of life, healing, mercy, and restoration. Biblical truth is found by studying all of Scripture rather than building doctrine from a few isolated verses. At times, certain passages may seem to support an idea when read alone, but a broader study often reveals a different conclusion. The Bible's teaching on slavery illustrates this principle. While some passages instruct slaves on how to live within their circumstances, other passages reveal God's condemnation of man stealing, His desire for freedom, and His view of believers as brothers and sisters in Christ.
