Missed expectations can be painful, especially when we've done everything “right.” But even in the waiting, God is still at work. But the greatest missed expectation in human history was the cross. The disciples expected a triumphant king. Instead, they watched their Savior crucified. In Luke 19:37, they praised Him; days later, they scattered in despair.In that gap between what we hoped for and what we received, we often wrestle with fear, frustration, or confusion. But it's there, right in the void, that God meets us.When our expectations are shattered, our reactions often fall into two extremes:Resignation: We lower our expectations to avoid disappointment, but in doing so, we risk losing hope altogether.Control: We force outcomes, striving and manipulating circumstances to regain a sense of stability.Neither path leads to peace. Instead, God offers a different way: waiting, but not the passive, idle kind.Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” Biblical waiting is an active stance of trust. Pastor Kevin Queen once said, “The work God wants to do in us while we wait is as important as what we are waiting for.”Sometimes, unmet expectations reveal that our desires need to be realigned. Other times, God uses the delay to do work in us or others that couldn't happen any other way.Practical Steps for Seasons of WaitingDrawing from the book of Habakkuk, here are three practical steps for navigating seasons of waiting:Acknowledge God is at work – Even if you can't see it. Habakkuk 1:5 reminds us, “I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.” Change your perspective – Ask God to help you see things from His perspective. Sometimes, hope is just a matter of viewpoint. Worship in the waiting – Worship reorients our hearts. It reminds us who God is and keeps us anchored in His character rather than our circumstances.For those walking through disappointment today, remember that God is not absent in your waiting. Do Everything for God's Glory 5 G Living – Do everything you do… For the Glory of God For the Good of your fellow man To get the Gospel to non-believers For the Growth of your fellow Christians With a Grateful heart Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. - 1 Corinthians 10:31 Whatever you do, from the simplest things to the most important, in private and public, at home, work, school, church, and in your spare time, do it all for the glory of God! The primary O.T. Hebrew word for glory is Kabod (Strong's 3519). It is best translated as glory, honor, or splendor. Some scholars have noted it includes the idea of weightiness, of importance worthy of reverence (a big deal!). The primary New Testament word is Doxa (Strong's 1391), from which we get our word doxology. It is also best translated as glory, honor, splendor, with the clear idea of praise included. In His temple everyone says, “Glory!” -Psalm 28:9 “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!” - Isaiah 6:3 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. - Psalm 19:1-2 The heavens declare His righteousness, and all the peoples see His glory. - Psalm 97:6 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. - Habakkuk 2:14 The nations shall bless themselves in Him, And in Him they shall glory. - Jeremiah 4:2 Arise, shine; For your light has come! Acknowledge God as the source of what has been entrusted to you Adore Him for who He is and what He has done in your life Applaud Him in thought, word, and deed Then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.' And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth…” - Deuteronomy 8:17-18 So on a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat on his throne and gave an oration to them. And the people kept shouting, “The voice of a god and not a man!” Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died. But the word of God grew and multiplied. - Acts 12:21-24 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.- 1 Corinthians 10:31 To seek one's own glory is not glory! - Proverbs 25:27 Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth. - Proverbs 27:2 God gives grace to the humble so they can turn from pride, in which a person glorifies themselves, to the real opposite of pride, which is glorifying God!

One of my favorite passages in the Bible is found in Luke 12:16-21, the Parable of the Rich Fool. While most of us don't have barns today, Jesus' warning about storing up earthly treasures is just as relevant now as it was then. So, what does it mean to be “rich toward God,” and why does it matter? Let's dive into this powerful lesson.The parable begins with a wealthy man who has a problem many might envy—his land has produced so much that his barns aren't big enough to store it all. His solution? Tear down the old barns and build bigger ones. He says to himself, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry” (Luke 12:19).At first glance, this sounds practical, even responsible. But Jesus reveals the man's tragic mistake. God calls him a “fool” because his life will end that very night, and all his possessions will be left behind. Jesus concludes with a warning: “So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God” (Luke 12:21).What Does It Mean to Be Rich Toward God?“Rich toward God” is a striking phrase, and while Scripture doesn't define it explicitly, we can infer its meaning through contrast. The Rich Fool's mistake wasn't his wealth but his heart. He prioritized his possessions over God, finding his security and satisfaction in material abundance rather than in his Creator.Being rich toward God means:Acknowledge God as Your Source – Recognize that all you have belongs to Him.Treasure God Above All – Count Him as your greatest riches, above money or possessions.Use Wealth for God's Glory – Invest in His Kingdom by giving generously to those in need.Had the Rich Fool done this, his wealth could have been a tool for eternal good instead of a trap for his soul.The story of the Rich Fool reminds me of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Like the Rich Fool, Ebenezer Scrooge was consumed by wealth and self-interest. But Scrooge was given a second chance to change—and so are we.Jesus teaches that the way we use money is evidence of our faith. While works don't save us, they reflect our relationship with God. Holding onto wealth for ourselves reveals a heart that treasures possessions more than the Giver of all good things.Money as a Tool, Not a TreasureIt's important to note that money itself isn't bad. It's a powerful tool that can be used for good or bad, depending on how we handle it.The danger lies in letting money take God's place in our hearts. As Jesus warns in Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” The Rich Fool's failure wasn't his wealth but his attitude. Instead of viewing his abundance as a gift from God, he saw it as an opportunity for personal indulgence.Imagine if the Rich Fool had responded differently. What if, instead of building bigger barns, he prayed, “God, this is all Yours. You have made my fields prosper. Show me how to use this blessing to glorify You and help others”?He might have used his wealth to feed the hungry, clothe the poor, or support God's work. He could have shared in the joy of giving and discovered that, as Jesus said in Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”Lessons for Us TodayThe Parable of the Rich Fool is a sobering reminder to examine our own hearts. Are we building bigger barns, accumulating wealth for our own comfort? Or are we using God's blessings to invest in eternal treasures?Here's how we can strive to be rich toward God:Trust in God's Provision – Avoid placing your security in money.Give Generously – Use your resources to bless others and advance God's Kingdom.Focus on Eternity – Remember that worldly wealth is temporary, but treasures in heaven last forever.The Rich Fool learned his lesson too late, but we don't have to. With these final verses of chapter one Paul explains more of the horrific results of idolatry and God's righteous wrath in response. There is a clear progression downward; first idolatry impacts one's worship, then their body, then their mind. Here we also find Paul's longest list of specific sins in all of his letters which are the fruits of a debased mind. The only reason why this passage doesn't describe who all of us are today is because of the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

The late Tim Keller once said, “Just because you can't see or imagine a good reason why God would allow something bad to happen…doesn't mean there can't be one.”When something bad happens to your finances, it's tempting to wonder if God really knows what he's doing. Well, He does! Today, we'll find God's comfort in the midst of financial trials.1 Peter 5:7 reminds us of God's love for us in the midst of life's troubles: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” It's a reassuring verse, but you must know the context to understand God's comfort fully.The Context of Peter's MessageThe Apostle Peter wrote his letters to Christians scattered throughout Asia Minor. Many of them were being persecuted, discriminated against, and even murdered because of their faith in Jesus. In these hardships, Peter told his readers to: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” - 1 Peter 5:6Life can be challenging. It certainly wasn't for first-century Christians and may not be for you right now. But Peter's words contain the secret of God's comfort. It begins with humility.You can probably think of a time when you were going along just fine, and out of the blue, something awful happened, like the death of a loved one, a business failure, a car accident, or a job loss. These tragedies can have severe emotional, physical, and financial consequences.Our Reactions to HardshipsHow do you usually react when bad things happen? Maybe you feel anxious and say, “That's not how things were supposed to go!” Or, you might feel angry and discouraged, thinking, “Nothing good can ever come from this!” If this sounds like you, you're in good company. Whether you read the book of Psalms and see David praying laments before God or see Job questioning God during the unfair trials he faced, we leave with this beautiful truth: God can handle our raw, honest emotions.Like David and Job, in these difficult circumstances, we need to continually be reminded that God is mighty, loving, and perfectly capable of running the universe. As worshipers, we're not called to deny our pain but instead offer it to the only One who can do anything about it. When we bring our grief into God's presence, we gain perspective. It's a perspective that rises above the storm. It's a perspective that sees the Son of Man standing alongside you in the fire.Trusting God's TimingAnother idea in this passage can help us when we struggle. It's the part that says God will lift us up in due time. In other words, God is sovereign, and there is always hope. We can trust God's timing, even if it doesn't match our expectations. God is working things out for our good and his glory.Sometimes, it's not enough just to listen to a radio program. The struggles in your life hit you hard, and you need more. I hope you'll spend some extra time reading God's Word. Pray. Find out what God wants to teach you through your struggles. Spend time with other believers, encouraging each other.The next few verses in 1 Peter 5 explain why these spiritual disciplines are so important. 1 Peter 5:8 reads: “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith.” This passage reminds us of the spiritual battle going on all around us. Suffering can make us even more vulnerable to Satan's attacks. He tries to make us believe we can “do life” without God. But Peter tells us to resist his lies. Bible study, fellowship, and prayer will help you stand firm in the faith.Practical Steps for ComfortTrust the Lord that he has a good reason for what you're going through right now! I have not mastered human wisdom, nor do I know the Holy One.” These verses express Agur's humility and recognition of his limitations in understanding. Seek wisdom not from human sources alone but also from God's Word, which is the ultimate source of wisdom and understanding. Recognize that true wisdom comes from acknowledging our limitations and seeking God's guidance in all aspects of life. Now, let's explore verses 4-5. “Who but God goes up to heaven and comes back down? Who holds the wind in his fists? Who wraps up the oceans in his cloak? Who has created the whole wide world? What is his name—and his son's name? Tell me if you know!” These verses highlight the greatness and sovereignty of God. How can we understand the greatness and sovereignty of God in relation to our pursuit of wisdom? Reflect on the greatness and sovereignty of God, who holds the entire universe in His hands. Recognize that God alone has the power and authority to govern the heavens and the earth. Acknowledge God's role as the Creator and Sustainer of all things, including the laws that govern the natural world. Trust in God's wisdom and guidance, knowing that He alone has the answers to life's most profound questions. Seek to know God more intimately, through His Word and His Son, Jesus Christ, who reveals the fullness of God's wisdom and love. And finally, let's turn our attention to verses 6-9. “Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection. Do not add to his words, or he may rebuke you and expose you as a liar. O God, I beg two favors from you; let me have them before I die. First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.” These verses emphasize God's Word's trustworthiness and contentment's importance. Ask not what your finances will do to you in 2023 ask what you will do with your finances! That, of course, is a play on a famous JFK quote, but it describes the need to take a proactive role with your finances in the New Year coming up. Mark Biller joins us today to tell us how to do that. Mark Biller is executive editor at Sound Mind Investing. At the end of each year, SMI compiles a list of tips to prepare for the ahead. You'll find this year's post, Your 10 Most Important Financial Moves for 2023, SoundMindInvesting.org. Biller explains that it's a round-up of planning suggestions for the year ahead. Rather than providing a one-size-fits-all type list, they instead serve up a broad range of ideas. The reader then picks their own personal Top 10 for 2023 list from the 70 or so suggestions discussed. Doing that and then following through on those specific items will make you a better steward of your resources and help you move closer to your long-term goals. The suggestions are broken into several categories: SPIRITUAL AND FINANCIAL FUNDAMENTALS Here are a few of the spiritual and financial fundamentals on the list: - Acknowledge God as the Lord over your finances. That's the starting point of Christian stewardship and an important ongoing aspect of a deepening relationship with Christ. - Make a plan for your financial journey. On these programs together, we frequently discuss the need to develop a biblically sound, personalized money-management strategy that informs your spending, saving, investing, and generosity. - Resist financial temptations. Handling money well takes more than learning the rules of good financial management. You also have to practice and develop self-control. Thankfully, self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit! So as we draw closer to Christ, that fruit should become increasingly manifest in our lives. STRENGTHENING YOUR FINANCIAL FOUNDATION If your foundation isn't fully in place, you should concentrate your 2023 efforts on the suggestions in this section. - Take advantage of the world's most effective personal finance tool: a budget. Unpopular perhaps, but a well-planned and executed budget is the single best tool available for effective money management. - One new one to the list this year is to comparison shop for higher interest rates on your savings. Interest rates have moved from near zero a year ago to the 4.0% range today. So moving your money to a savings account at an online bank can meaningfully move the needle on the amount of interest you can earn. - Similarly, consider putting some of your savings in U.S. Government I-Bonds. We've talked about I-Bonds a number of times together in recent months because they are paying inflation-adjusted rates well above any other savings vehicle. They have some restrictions but can be extremely attractive in the right circumstances. DEVELOPING YOUR INVESTING PLAN There is a lot in this section 26 suggestions! But here's the most important big idea: Scripture encourages us to prepare for the needs of tomorrow without becoming hoarders. So these suggestions can help you invest as a faithful steward who acts with prudence and wisdom. - Identify obstacles that are holding you back from saving for retirement and start moving them out of the way. Common roadblocks include auto loans, expensive housing, and generally poor money management. But often the biggest obstacle is simply not having a financial plan or any measurable goals. - Get familiar with the foundational biblical precepts related to investing. The Bible offers many timeless principles related to investing and wealth. Studying them and allowing them to become part of your thinking will help you apply those ideas to the investing decisions you face. - Become a better investor by using an inside-out approach. But the big idea here is to make investment decisions based on your personal inside-out needs and circumstances, rather than on outside-in expert opinions or market news. BROADENING YOUR PORTFOLIO Once you become an experienced investor, you can broaden your portfolio either to reduce risk or take advantage of market conditions. A few examples from this section include: - Learning about investments beyond stocks and bonds. We just had the worst year for traditional 60-40 stock/bond portfolios in decades. Fortunately, there are other options available today, and learning about things like commodities, real estate, and gold, just to name a few, can help add some additional diversification to a core portfolio. - On a similar note, learning about some easy ways to hedge market downside may be worthwhile. SMI has discussed several of these techniques and products this year. One that you may have to grapple with whether you go through our list or not is understanding the new investment options coming to many employer-based retirement accounts. Not all of these are necessarily good options, so it's important to be informed. LOOKING FORWARD TO RETIREMENT - Take advantage of the current bear market to convert Traditional IRA money to a Roth IRA. With investment account values down this year, it can be an attractive time to consider a Traditional-to-Roth conversion in order to have more tax-free income in retirement. - Another example from this section is assessing how much money you'll need to maintain your standard of living in retirement. SMI has some helpful pointers on how to do that for those with that transition on the horizon. And the most important category of all YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD First and foremost, Invest time in it. The most important goal of a Christian steward is to know Jesus the One who IS the pearl of great price. Valuing your relationship and communion with Him above your wealth and investments is a key cornerstone to keeping all this financial stuff in perspective. This has been a tough financial year for a lot of people. But if we trust in Jesus and bring our concerns to him, Christ will deliver us through the difficulties of life. We can live in hope because we serve a God who is too strong to lose control of any situation, He's too wise to make mistakes, and He's too loving to ever abandon us.
