Hey, hey, hey! This is episode #2 of the series that I’m that I’m running over at the Midlife Schmidlife podcast called “Now More Than Ever” where I’m holding Facebook Lives on topics that I feel are important during this time of shelter in place and in turn turning them into a podcast. This week, I’m introducing you to two of my favorite humans - Lara Heacock and Jo Casey. We are in a business mastermind together and have been meeting for over two years. But this conversation isn’t just for business owners - what I’m hoping that you get out of this conversation is the fact that real connection can be made even in these trying times and this mastermind is proof. The three of us share what a mastermind is and offer ideas on starting one even if you don’t have a business. We talk how shelter in place has affected connection in our daily lives but also ways we are getting through. Plus we really dive into having connection with ourselves and what we need during this roller coaster of a time. You can find Jo Casey over at https://www.jocasey.com/ Lara Heacock at https://laraheacock.com/ and https://kindovermatter.com/. Lara also has a book on Amazon, Practical Kindness: 52 Ways to Bring More Compassion, Courage and Kindness into Your World.

On today's episode of the Business NOT as usual podcast, I'm joined by Lara Heacock.Lara is a Leadership Coach, Lara Heacock helps leaders and corporations leverage kindness to gain powerful results. Lara helps leaders lean into kindness to unlock blind spots, increase self-awareness, and improve their performance – even when it's difficult. She's a speaker, trainer and leadership coach with almost 20 years' experience in corporate America, leading multi-million dollar projects. She's also an award-winning writer, engaging speaker and innovative trainer.Kindness and corporate America perhaps don't seem like obvious bedfellows – but kindness is the difference that makes all the difference. Far from being an easy way out, kindness helps us to do the hard stuff. It helps build resilience, increase engagement and reduce turnover. It helps to foster loyalty, creativity, and innovation – in other words, it impacts our emotional bottom line as well as the financial one.In our conversation today, Lara and I discuss the challenge (and opportunities) for Lara as a leadership coach who does a lot of her work in person. We discuss how she's been able to move many of her in-person events online and how she sees this time of enforced home working leading to a more flexible approach from many companies in the future. We also have a discussion about surrender and dealing less than pleasant feelings of lockdown - from frustration to boredom, fear to stress. Here's what she says:"Last week I was sitting in my house (because that's what we do now) and I realized that I'd pretty much adjusted to being quarantined. In my state, I'm currently in week 4, so this was just about 3 weeks in. Huh, I thought. I guess I just don't leave the house anymore and I'm living a little life in these 4 walls. Please know that I share all of this with DEEP awareness of the privilege I have to be in 4 safe walls. Somehow I hit surrender. What came before it? Exhaustion. Fear. Worry. Laughter. Sadness. Confusion. Anger. What will come after it? Exhaustion. Fear. Worry. Laughter. Sadness. Confusion. Anger. That's the thing about surrender, or honestly any of these ways of being. They're not permanent. It took 3 weeks and a lot of work (regular walks, daily meditation, online connection, quiet time, lots of cooking, snuggling with kitties, extra sleep) to reach surrender; and I know that it's not going to stay with me until this quarantine ends…but I do know it's possible. I know now that I can experience surrender, and joy, and laughter, and connection. I also know that I'll feel sadness, and exhaustion, and confusion, and frustration…and that they will also pass."You can read the full blog post hereConnect With LaraKind Over MatterLaraHeacock.comInstagramLinkedInFacebook
"Grace" has always been more than just a word or a name for me. This week, I wanted to go into a bit of storytelling to share a few things on the topic of Grace and how it resonates with me in life. How do we show grace to other people? Do we grant ourselves grace when we need it the most? Or in the process of self-doubt and growing insecurities, have we forgotten about it? My Name is Amariah… The biblical definition of Grace is “unmerited favor”. This means that even though you don't deserve it, someone can give you an act of kindness beyond what is due or usual. My full given name is Amariah Grace. It means God has promised you Grace -- which is extremely ironic because if you take grace in the sense of walking with ease, I am a bit of a klutzy. That’s just not me. I fall all the time. I could get really emotional thinking about my name and what it means. I often ask, “Why would I deserve to be loved in the way that I get kindness that I don't deserve?” It sticks in my craw. It’s easier for us to do that for other people, but it's just so hard for us to do it for ourselves. We are all so mean and so critical on the inside that we tend to treat other people better than we treat ourselves. And so, I want to share this poem that I found by Lara Heacock which speaks about giving ourselves grace: When you’re doing hard things. When you’re going through change. When you’re noticing old patterns creeping back in. When you don’t feel like you showed up at your best. When you’re lost in the whirling dervish of busy. When your heart feels heavy. When your mood feels flat. When you pick a fight for no reason. When you lose your temper. When you make a mistake. When you are having a very human experience, give yourself grace. The Gift of Grace I named my third daughter Grace as well. She doesn’t fall as much as I do -- more graceful, if I may say so. My great grandmother's name was Grace, and so was my father’s biological mother. The point is, I have this legacy with this word “grace” and it needs to be part of my journey. Especially this year when I've declared that the words of the year for me are healing and abundance. And if I am to achieve those, I absolutely need to include grace for myself and grace for other people. I still fall, and I know that I will fall in the future. But there is grace to be found within us. As the poem teaches, we have to find those places in our bodies, minds, spirits where we feel so tightly wound and give ourselves ease in those areas. “When you are having a very human experience, give yourself grace.” And if you need help doing it, please reach out and we’ll talk about it over coffee: https://riahgonzalez.com/contact --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app · Trainual: Trainual is a software that helps you document what you do, so you can easily delegate and train others. https://trainual.com/freemonth/ Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/amariah-gonzalez/support

Two words you never hear together: corporate and kindness. They are practically oxymorons – but not so fast. Lara Heacock works with corporations on kindness to combat overwhelm and burnout. Now according to Lara, corporate kindness is different from interpersonal kindness. Corporate kindness isn’t about hugs and singing choruses of Kumbaya. It’s about corporations extending Website: www.kindovermatter.com Book: Practical Kindness
In today’s podcast, we’ll talk about how you can leverage kindness to realize powerful results. Our guest today is Lara Heacock, a self-professed “kindness ambassador.” Lara is a certified personal and professional coach who focuses on kindness as a key to success. Before she went into coaching, Lara spent 13 years as a professional recruiter and leader. She holds a psychology degree as well as an MBA. She is the author of Practical Kindness: 52 Ways to Bring More Compassion, Courage, and Kindness into Your World.
We could all use a little more kindess in our lives. Being busy is a cultural norm that leads many women feeling exhausted and out of control in their lives. Lara Heacock has experienced that unending pressure to do more, be more and have more. And the subsequent burn out that is the inevitable result. We get it. Jo-Anne has talked previously about how she reframed the word 'busy' to 'full' in her vocabulary. Our language is important and we want to make sure we use it to help us own our lives fully. Lara suggests we stop saying "I don't have time" and get clear by saying, "I didn't make time." Let's take responsibility for the things we have done or not done. And for how we talk about our choices.Lara shares her story starting with committing to Self-Care Saturday - a weekly commitment to spending time doing things that would help her restore balance in her life. This commitment changed everything for her.And kindness extends beyond self-care - it involves how we treat each other personally and professionally. Lara works with her corporate clients to help them develop a kinder aproach to how they work together. Imagine being part of a corporate culture where kindness is a value! If you've ever wished you responded with more kindness OR wished you had been treated more kindly this episode will inspire you!If you are new to Reframe Your Life after you listen to this episode we suggest you listen to Episode 70 - Practical Ways to Practice Self-Care.
This week, I’m delighted to have Lara Heacock joining me for the second installment of the Friendpreneur Series. This series focuses on conversations with friends, who are entrepreneurs. Many of the people are friends I’ve met either through the show (and have been on before!) or through contacts in coaching. I’ve found that starting and running a small business is something very new to many of us, who have grown up without examples of people who are entrepreneurs in our day-to-day. I had the pleasure of meeting Lara in coach training over three years ago in the Courageous Living Coaching Certification program. She’s so full of life and joy and I have loved getting to know her better, and seeing her grow her coaching practice. She’s joining me this week for the Friendpreneur Series to share about her new book - Practical Kindness, and balancing a 9 to 5 job with her coaching. We laugh, we share lots of entrepreneur tips, and I know you’ll love getting to know her. Lara and I talk about: Bringing kindness and joy to corporate settings and work Recognizing that there will always be fear in pursuing our dreams How to work with fear Holding ourselves accountable for kindness Lara’s experience in writing her new book, Practical Kindness The courage of being imperfect Creating boundaries and having difficult discussions The rise of the gig economy and how it ties in to 9 to 5 jobs Masterminds and the importance of connections as an entrepreneur Tips tricks and tools: finding a mastermind, figuring out what works for you energetically, don’t pick up your phone first thing in the morning when you wake up, and getting in touch with what you need in each moment Resources Lara Heacock’s site: Kind Over Matter Practical Kindness by Lara Heacock (on Amazon) Amazing alarm clock on Amazon Gretchen Rubin’s four tendencies framework test Emilie Wapnick’s “How to Be Everything” on Amazon Past Friendpreneur Series: Christy Tending on Self Advocacy, Going Beyond Self Care
How many of us view self-care as selfish? And how many of us are suffering from burnout from putting our careers and other relationships before our own self-care? Notice how these questions go hand-in-hand? That’s where my guest Lara Heacock found herself in her mid-30’s and what led to her becoming a life & leadership coach with a focus on kindness. In our conversation, Lara shares her journey as a high-achieving woman and what led to her realization that self-kindness needed to be brought to the top of her to-do list. We dive into bringing forth projects into the world and celebrating our journey of self-awareness. Lara’s mission is to end burnout by using kindness and she hopes to shift the culture that glorifies burnout to one that believes self-kindness and self-care as a vehicle to success. During a 365 day challenge to bring more kindness into the world, she realized she needed to start with herself and Self-Kindness Saturday was born. WOW - who else wants to begin that practice??! Lara and I are both graduates of the 9-month intensive Courageous Living Coach Certification (her in 2014 and me in 2015). Now we are members of the Leadership Team for the program and get to hang out quite a bit throughout the year. Lara also just released a book, Practical Kindness: 52 Ways to Bring More Compassion, Courage and Kindness into Your World. The book is set up in four sections with and easy to read chapter to read each week. I can’t recommend it enough as a way to create weekly practice of bringing more positive action into your life. If you are someone who feels she constantly needs to be “on” and needs to be doing all the things, you will love this interview. Hello Courgemakers and welcome to episode 71 of The Couragemakers Podcast. Before we dive into this week's episode, I want to share with you something pretty epic I've been working on lately. So, as you might know from previous episodes where I've shared parts of my story, a big catalyst in my story has been burning out and leaving the nonprofit and activist world. Since leaving that world, I feel like I've been on a huge journey of finding work that sustains me, brings me joy and changes the world at the same time. While I've learned so much during that journey, the biggest [something] that I've come to believe is that we're all capable of finding work we love, that aligns with our values and makes the world a brighter place. And the most important part of that lesson? We each have work that only we can do. In the past couple of years, I've been doing a lot of reflecting. My background is in community development work, activism, one to one client work and working to develop world-changing projects. And I absolutely loved the foundations of that work. I loved working on a grassroots level, I loved bringing projects to life and working with the people behind them, and I loved seeing dreams become reality. But somewhere along the line, the depth of my frustrations specifically with the sector and the internal structures completely blinded me to the parts I loved. And the strangest part was, that the work that I loved? It's never stopped. Whether it's the work I do here on Couragemakers to encourage and rebel-rouse you to do the work you love and find a life you love, the back and forth emails with lovely listeners who are trying to find a way to do the work only they can do, or the massive reams of blog posts, weekly newsletters and heart warming conversations I have - it's become all too clear to see that that work never ended. And I don't think the activist in me will ever go away, even if it is now different than marching on the front lines! So, there's been a question floating around in my head. I wondered: is there a way of properly combining the parts of the work I loved and excelled at, with That Hummingbird Life and Couragemakers? But the base of my question was this: What is the work only I can do, that really sets me on fire? The answer came a couple of years ago, sat in a coffee shop. And it was a pretty bloody obvious answer: how about helping multi-passionate, creatives and fellow dreamers to do the work that only they can do? And that work only they can do? Well, that's their epic shit. Since being in that coffee shop, sketching out the basics of what would become The Epic Shit Sessions, they've developed into a series of sessions designed to help you on every stage of your dream chasing journey. They are now four standalone mentoring/coaching sessions for multi-passionate doers, makers and world shakers who want to want to get their shit rolling, make it happen and generally just get shit done. Basically, taking you from from Ahh I'm drowning under post-it notes, to holy shit I can do it They include a 90 minute brainstorming session to develop and refine your ideas and take you from overwhelmed to shut-the-front-door excitement (aptly named Get Shit Rolling) a 1:1 month long experience for turning your project into an action plan so you can walk away with your creative roadmap called Make Shit Happen and an email accountability service, which will give you the gentle kick up the arse you need to get your show on the road ,which helps you, as the name suggests, Get Shit Done! Oh, and also possibly my favouritely named one ‘Fuck This Shit', a 90 minute session designed for creatives with no fucks left to give, to drag your enthusiasm back from its gap year and focus on what really matters and how you can do your work in a way that lights you up as well. Think part coaching, part mentoring and part cheerleading without the cheesy pom-poms, but with the music. Behind the scenes I've been working with clients on these sessions since May and now I'm so excited to officially bring them out into the world! So, just wanted to let you know the latest in my mission to stop dreamshitters and get you doing the work that matters! You can find out more about the sessions by going to thathummingbirdlife.com/epicshit. Now onto today's show! This week I'm thrilled to share with you my conversation with Lara Heacock. I was introduced to Lara by the lovely Jo Casey who's been a previous guest on Couragemakers. I've long been a fan of Lara's work over on the online magazine Kind Over Matter and it's fair to say that we bonded not only over our aligned values but also our shared love of goats! Lara Heacock is an Executive Life Coach based in suburban Philadelphia and She brings a 15 year background in recruiting and leadership, an MBA and a life coaching certification, as well as her experience running an online business. Lara is passionate about empowering professionals to feel more confident, achieve goals and enjoy the lives they work so hard to build. Lara is an INFJ Myers Briggs personality type and is a travel lover and self confessed total animal nut. In this episode we're really diving into kindness, reclaiming the world selfish and the standards we hold ourselves and others to. Lara shares her journey to running online magazine Kind Over Matter and becoming an executive life coach, the year that changed everything for her and fantastic advice for saying no and setting boundaries. We have so many great conversations about holding our truths and other people's truths simultaneously, how self kindness doesn't always look like self kindness and also the power of making gutteral, intuitive decisions. This is such a wonderful, practical episode, and the And/Or method Lara mentions in this episode is seriously changing my life! In a world full of so much confrontation, angst and polite conversations over dinner with family avoiding politics, I know you're really going to love what Lara has to say about parallel truths and being able to hear each other without denying your own truth. You might need a notepad and pen for this one! Enjoy the show! The intention behind this podcast is to inspire and encourage creative and mission-driven women to live a wholehearted life and follow the beat of their drum. I love when I get recommendations for podcast guests from my friends. I feel they know me enough to know who I will click with and who will be great for the show. So when my friend Lara Heacock of Kind Over Matter introduced today’s guest to me, I knew immediately that Tracie and I would have a wonderful conversation. Tracie Nichols is a nature-loving poet, mother of three adult children, amateur photographer, speaker, facilitator and career and leadership coach. She has an incredibly eclectic career path, a deep curiosity about and love for people of all kinds and a deep commitment to nurturing a quiet revolution toward compassion, equity and inclusion. She also holds a masters degree with a ridiculously long name: M.A. in Transformative Learning and Change with an emphasis in Human and Organizational Transformation. Tracie also says that she is multipotentialed (another term for being multi-passionate), introverted and identifies as an highly sensitive person (HSP). Never heard of HSP? Well if you’ve ever wondered why the evening news seems overwhelming, you can “feel” the energy of others, are deeply moved by the arts and maybe even can hear the buzz of neon lights...you may be an HSP. But even if you can’t relate to her qualities, this is a wonderful interview about living your giftedness as being truly you. Tracie shares her story and how she supports people like herself find a career they love and aligns with who they are. We have many laughs and share many stories in this episode. What Tracie and I Talk About Dispelling myths around being multi-passionate. The downfall of how society sees a multi-passionate person. The challenges that a highly sensitive people face in society. Why it’s important to live a life as a person who is being true to yourself. Why it can be overwhelming to learn that you are a multipotentialed person. How multiapotentialed parents are helping their multipotentialed children. Her connection with nature and why she feels it’s an important part of who she is. Who Tracie loves to work with.
