HVAC School - For Techs, By Techs

In this powerful episode of the HVAC School podcast, Bryan sits down with Nate Agentis, third-generation plumber and author of Get Shit Done: How to Build a Strong Team, A Profitable Business, and a Lasting Legacy. Their conversation explores the intersection of personal health, business success, and meaningful leadership in the trades industry. Nate's journey from technician to business owner wasn't easy. After his grandfather built the family plumbing business from nothing, only to lose it to the IRS, and his father rebuilt it from scratch, Nate found himself thrust into leadership at age 33 when his mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The tragedy of losing his mother while simultaneously taking over the business created a perfect storm that eventually led to burnout and a period of deep reflection during COVID-19. This experience became the foundation for his leadership philosophy and his book. The conversation delves into the generational divide in the trades, where older workers view younger employees as lazy while younger workers see their elders as slaves to their jobs. Nate argues that healthy leadership requires bridging this gap through understanding and practical solutions. His approach centers on five pillars: healthy owner, sticky culture, skilled technicians, efficient operations, and clear metrics. However, he emphasizes that without the foundation of personal health and self-awareness, the other pillars crumble. Perhaps most compelling is Nate's emphasis on humility and accountability as twin keys to success. He challenges the "self-made man" mentality prevalent in trades culture, arguing that true leadership requires vulnerability, community, and the willingness to seek help. This philosophy extends beyond business into his nonprofit work with Hope for the Trades, which provides educational resources, retreat opportunities, and humanitarian mission trips for tradespeople seeking both professional development and personal renewal. Key Topics Covered Generational Business Transitions - Navigating the challenges of taking over a family business during crisis and the unique pressures of third-generation ownership The Burnout Epidemic in Trades - Understanding why skilled tradespeople burn out and how to create sustainable career paths that don't sacrifice family and personal health Bridging Generational Divides - Addressing the tension between older workers who prioritize work ethic and younger workers who emphasize work-life balance The Five Pillars Framework - Healthy owner, sticky culture, skilled technicians, efficient operations, and clear metrics as the foundation for sustainable business growth Humility and Accountability in Leadership - Why admitting weakness and seeking help are actually signs of strength and keys to long-term success The Balance Wheel Concept - A practical tool for evaluating different areas of life (marriage, parenting, health, spirituality, etc.) and identifying areas needing attention Community and Isolation in Trades - Addressing the epidemic of loneliness among tradespeople and the importance of genuine relationships for personal and professional growth Metrics Without Depression - How to implement business measurement systems as tools for clarity rather than sources of shame or discouragement Hope for the Trades Nonprofit - Educational resources, retreat programs, and humanitarian missions designed to support the whole person, not just the business owner Legacy vs. Profit Mentality - Shifting focus from purely financial success to creating lasting positive impact on employees, families, and communities Practical Life Planning - Applying strategic planning principles to personal life, marriage, and parenting with the same intentionality used in business planning   Sign up for Hope for the Trades at https://hopeforthetrades.com/ and get a free copy of Nate's book. On today's episode, we have a segment, in which Mark presents his presentation titled "Core Drivers of a World-Class Organization" at the Dental Success Summit 2024, he delves into the essential qualities that distinguish exceptional organizations. With over 5,967 years of collective dental experience in the room, Mark underscores that not all experiences are created equal, emphasizing the value of collaboration and a positive attitude over mere longevity in the field. He contrasts the downbeat energy of a larger, less proactive conference with the spirited, abundant mindset found among the attendees of the Dental Success Summit. Reiterating the infectious nature of negativity, he praises the smaller but mightier group before him, capable of enacting real change in the face of dentistry's myriad challenges. Mark discusses the importance of an abundance mindset versus scarcity, illustrating how the latter can stifle growth and collaboration. He moves on to the pivotal concept of personal accountability, touching on Jocko Willink's teachings on extreme ownership, which align with the summit's ethos of taking responsibility for one's actions. The talk then shifts to prioritized focus, where Mark cites Sam Altman on the power of focusing on the right tasks rather than merely being busy. He redefines the Mastermind Group's battle cry from "Get Shit Done" to "Get the Right Shit Done," stressing the significance of working smart over working hard. Wrapping up, Mark presents the stark disparity between the world's wealthiest individuals and the bottom billions, questioning the allocation of their most valuable resource—time. He closes with a powerful reminder that success and problem-solving at a high level are contingent upon effectively managing one's time, encouraging attendees to apply these principles within their practices and personal lives for unparalleled success.

Two of my clients inside my program Perfectionists Getting Shit Done (aka PGSD) have given me permission to share this coaching call excerpt with you. In this call we are talking about emotional capacity and how to expand your emotional capacity so that you can do the things you need to do to build your business. If you resist and avoid doing things that are uncomfortable, this is for you. When it comes to taking action we perfectionists get really frustrated when we have all of the knowledge but we aren't able to do the things we need to do. Why aren't we able to follow through? Because there is a difference between your knowledge and what you're physically capable of doing (e.g. typing words on a computer) and your ability to experience the uncomfortable emotions that are required to get shit done. Inside PGSD we support you fully with getting out of your own way and this call is a great example of some of the mindset and emotional work required to become someone who is taking consistent action towards their business goals without burning out. If you find this episode helpful I want to invite you inside my program Perfectionists Getting Shit Done. Break the mold and do what's best for you. Listen in to a conversation with today's guest, who built and rebuilt the businesses that fit her best. From Kelsey: My mission in life is to inspire people to take action, so they live purposefully. Currently, I do that through business coaching and hosting my podcast, Get Shit Done.Prior to coaching, I had my own hair salon. I had found a way to create the income I desired, work with dream clients, and provide only the services I loved, all while maintaining a great work-life balance. I soon realized that many of my business friends did not have the same experience.I started consulting other salon owners in marketing, strategy, and finance. I loved watching the “a ha's” unfold as we restructured their business. And in those interactions, I realized my purpose was beyond hair. Eventually, I closed my salon to focus 100% on business coaching beyond the beauty industry. For the last 3 years, I've combined my personal experience and college education (B.S. in Entrepreneurship from Washington State University) to help people start and scale profitable businesses that they are passionate about.Since starting my coaching business, I have surpassed my salon income and directly helped over 60 entrepreneurs with their businesses. Clients have 3x revenue, pivoted industries, opened new locations, hired their dream team, added in new offerings, launched new businesses, and so much more. I love what I get to do every day and I especially love seeing my clients win!If you are struggling to achieve your business goals. If you are overwhelmed with wearing all of the hats. If you aren't sure you have the right team members in the right seats, I would love to have a conversation with you to see if I can help. Jeffrey, a renowned sales expert and best selling author, believes that the key to success in modern selling lies in understanding the past and building genuine relationships. In a conversation with Vengreso's CEO Mario Martinez Jr. on The Modern Selling Podcast, Gitomer emphasizes the importance of personalization in sales and the value of turning relationships into friendships. He shares how he has made more sales after midnight than anyone else by focusing on being a value provider, not just a product pitcher. Gitomer challenges young salespeople to embrace the depth of personalization and move away from relying on shortcuts like AI. He encourages them to go back to their roots, tap into their family and business values, and invest time in truly understanding their customers' needs and desires. According to Gitomer, sales are made by engaging customers emotionally and proving their credibility socially. By customizing and personalizing their approach, salespeople can build trust and win more deals. The past will predict the future every single time. Study what happened, and it'll tell you what's going to happen. - Jeffrey Gitomer Jeffrey Gitomer is not your typical sales expert. He emphasizes the importance of uncovering the customer's motives and needs before presenting any sales materials. By focusing on the customer's personal goals and challenges, salespeople can build a stronger emotional connection and increase their chances of making a sale. 00:36:05 - Jeffrey's Dream Jobs Jeffrey shares his dream jobs, which include being a Starbucks barista, a Walmart greeter, and a waiter at a high-end restaurant. He believes that these roles provide opportunities to connect with people on a personal level, upsell products, and make a positive impact on customers' experiences. 00:37:24 - Upselling and Emotional Connection Jeffrey discusses the power of upselling through emotional connection. He signs off with a closing statement and encourages good selling. Tap into Cultural Preferences Being sensitive to cultural differences can also significantly enhance the efficacy of the sales process. As Jeffrey points out, cultural nuances can shape the business engagement and preferences of a potential customer. By showing respect and understanding toward these differences, sales professionals can foster positive business relationships and open avenues for prospective sales within different markets. Boost Sales with Personalization Sales professionals can see a remarkable difference in their results with the strategic use of personalization. Tailoring the approach to each prospect's specific needs and circumstances forms genuine connections and stands out in a sea of generic pitches. Jeffrey Gitomer's insights on avoiding generic AI responses emphasizes the need for this tailored interaction, forming a central part of the modern selling process. Build Strong Relationships and Trust Establishing and nurturing trust with prospects plays a pivotal role in sustainable sales success, as emphasized by Jeffrey. Not only does this foster long-lasting business relationships, but it also facilitates in-depth understanding of customer needs and motives for buying. The interaction that follows, therefore, becomes less of a sales pitch and more of a consultation - a collaborative process aimed at effectively addressing the customer's needs. Things will go differently than planned.  And a strong mindset is key to handling launches (no matter the outcome!) and finding success (however that looks for you!).  Today, we're gonna talk ALL about it!! More specifically, I'm talking about the FIVE things you can do today to get into the right mindset for your next launch.  But I won't stop there. I'm also giving four tips on what NOT to do on your next launch, with examples from my lessons learned and some clients.  These tips and examples will equip you mentally for what's to come so you can build the mental strength necessary to set your launch (and yourself) up for success right from the start!   Are you ready for this? Because I am. So hit that play button, and let's go!!!   Leave a 5 star review on iTunes!    Episode Highlights: Four things to not do when you're launching The benefits of always having a plan Why posting and ghosting doesn't work Five things to do to get in the right mindset for your launch Define what launch success looks like Why you should always take care of yourself first How to mentally prepare yourself for different launch scenarios The importance of truly believing in your offer Why having a strong mindset is so important for your launch   Need help getting shit done? https://www.facebook.com/groups/getshitdoneclub  Send us podcast ideas at info@kelseymarieknutson.com    Links: Show notes: https://www.kelseymarieknutson.com/podcast   Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kelseymarieknutson/  Hangout on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/getshitdoneclub  Try my favorite greens! Change is inevitable. Yet, it's one of the things that we as human beings struggle with the most. In this episode of The Fit Mess, we'll share some of the major changes we've experienced in our lives, and four things you should know to help you manage the stress that comes along with any change in yours. We open up and get really vulnerable with you about the pains that we face and what we do to manage that pain and still, despite it all, try and live a happier, healthier life. Something is going to change in your life too. Things might be great right now, things might suck. The good news is that it's going to change, but the way you manage it, and the way you respond to it, is the critical difference between thriving and being overwhelmed by it.  Topics discussed in this episode: How to accept that change is inevitable Why it's important to feel all of the feelings Your story can be a tragedy or a comedy Why better self-care is key to managing stress from change Why a support system can help you get through change Your struggle with change is actually less about the changes happening and more about how you think or respond to them *This episode was originally published in November of 2022 ---- MORE FROM THE FIT MESS: Get bonus clips and additional resources in our newsletter!
