This week is part 2 of our series on Timing, Tempo, and Time where we step into the nuanced terrain of what it actually takes to begin the work of repair. Whether we're the ones who caused harm, were impacted by it, or are caught in a mutual fracture, repair requires initiative—and initiative often requires courage.   We explore how clarity about our role, our responsibility, and our relational context shapes how we move first (or why we hesitate to). But repair isn't just about the decision to start—it's also about the pace we keep. Some fractures can begin mending in a single moment; others need months of faithful return.   This episode invites us to consider the rhythm of healing, the emotional resistance that can surface, and why repair is not a performance to rush but a process to honor. When we learn to initiate repair at a sustainable tempo, we become people who actively resist disintegration—and participate in the restoration of what's been broken.   Episode Links and References Genesis 3:15 – The first mention of God's promise to repair rupture. Parenting Through Betrayal: Helping Children When You're in Chaos   In this episode of the Human Intimacy Podcast, Dr. Kevin Skinner and MaryAnn Michaelis discuss one of the most challenging aspects of betrayal—parenting while navigating your own trauma. When betrayal shakes a relationship, children often experience the ripple effects, sometimes without fully understanding what's happening. The conversation explores the deep shame that both betrayed and betraying parents often feel, the impact of unspoken emotional tension on children, and the long-term effects of parental betrayal on a child's development.   Dr. Skinner shares personal experiences and insights on how betrayal influences family systems, emphasizing the importance of open, age-appropriate communication with children. MaryAnn highlights key strategies for disclosing difficult truths while prioritizing a child's emotional well-being. The episode also offers guidance on avoiding parentification, navigating parental shame, and maintaining connection despite emotional overwhelm.   The conversation underscores the importance of not only individual healing but also addressing the broader family system to foster resilience and long-term healing.   --- Recommended Resources   Books & Articles: 1. Jeff received four degrees at MIT (Physics, Math, Mech E and Robotics). He hosted “Time Warp” on the Discovery Channel about the wonders of science, and made large-scale art for 15 years.   By external measures, he was incredibly successful. But inside, something was missing. This disconnect led him to a deep depression in high school, and chronic pain for almost 20 years after that.   Jeff learned quantum mechanics before learning about his emotions. He marvels at the fact that we can measure the external universe to 10-decimal accuracy, but most of us don't learn about our insides: our emotions, what leads to flourishing, how to take great care of ourselves. Years of personal exploration transformed him, leading to a determination to not have the road to joy be difficult for others to find.   He has spent the last 15 years training in meditation, personal development, and group dynamics for well being, facilitating high school students through a 3-week intensive and adults through an 18-month program. How can you heal a damaged mind?'The Body Keeps The Score' by Bessel Van Der Kolk is a book focused on mental health plus the what/why's of PTSD and trauma. It's split into 5 parts dealing with history, brain science, child abuse, memory and healing strategies. It has a mix of case studies, hard/soft science and personal opinion.I summarised the book as follows. "It's a dense read that was more scientific than not. The tone was empathetic and despite being about heavy topics it focused on the positive of how trauma could be overcome. I didn't learn much new information but it did make me grateful for my upbringing and understanding of why other people behave how they do."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. Delving into the nuanced landscape of trauma, this talk redefines its contours. Beyond the apparent shockwaves of accidents or abuse, the lens of somatic experiencing unveils trauma as an entity residing within physiology, spanning tissues, nerves, and interactions. The ebb and flow of trauma's grip unfolds as dysregulation within one's system. Manifesting either as rigid fixity or graceful flow, this analogy likens it to a dam obstructing water's natural course.Peeling back the layers of identity, the interplay between personality and individuality emerges. Molded by adaptive responses to societal norms, authentic individuality can languish in the shadows. Yet, some craft safeguarding personalities – a guise concealing pain, as seen in comedians wielding humor as armor. Unlocking healing's door, the crux lies in fostering incremental capacity. Analogous to mastering a new skill or language, the journey entails nurturing the ability to navigate emotions, sensations, and responses. Nervous system regulation transcends mere emotional release. It's a symphony of physiological cues – trembles, tears – incrementally knitting the tapestry of healing and resilience. --- This session was recorded as part of the "Holistic Psychotherapy Summit" in January 2023. Welcome to a new season of Therapy and Theology, where we explore relevant topics related to faith, feelings, and spiritual formation. This season we are diving into exploring the term embodiment and its importance in our lives emotionally, relationally, and spiritually.  Today's episode seeks to provide a definition for the exploration of Embodiment as the interactive perspective of personhood that seeks to reclaim the body as a central aspect of humanity. In this introduction to the season, we ask some initial questions: Why does it Matter?  What makes it difficult?  What are we to do?  My prayer for this season is that we would seek to attune to our bodies and remind our bodies that healthy attachments with others and God are built on authenticity and communication. I hope this episode invites you to join me on this journey of what it means to connect to our bodies and learn from it again.  Sources:  The Wisdom of Your Body - Hilary McBride  The Body Keeps the Score - Bessel van der Kolk Mind Sight - Daniel Seigel  Strong Like Water - Aundi Kolber  ASK CARLEY!Do you have a question or topic you want to be discussed on a future Q+A episode? He is founder of the Trauma Center in Boston; past President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School. He regularly teaches at universities and hospitals around the world. His most recent 2014 New York Times Science best seller, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Treatment of Trauma transforms our understanding of traumatic stress, revealing how it literally rearranges the brain's wiring—specifically areas dedicated to pleasure, engagement, control, and trust. He shows how these areas can be reactivated through innovative treatments including neurofeedback, mindfulness techniques, play, yoga, and other therapies.I remember I first encountered Dr. van der Kolk's work in graduate school. I came across his article, The Body Keeps The Score, and thought to myself, "Oh my God, this is it. This makes perfect sense. This is what I want to do."I went on to read his other book, Traumatic Stress: The Effects of Overwhelming Experience on Mind, Body, and Society, and was equally inspired by that. Now, of course, his most recent work, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Treatment of Trauma, has been informing and inspiring not just trauma workers, but individuals who've been impacted by trauma, as well.In This EpisodeBessel van der Kolk's site The Body Keeps The Score siteThe Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Treatment of Trauma, by Bessel van der Kolk M.DThe Silk Roads: A New History of the World, Peter FrankopanThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5739761/advertisement

Sopha Rush is an author, online influencer and encourager, and professional promise proclaimer. Her book 100 Days of Living Deeply Rooted is such an encouraging word for life in the trenches of trying to unpack past narratives about yourself, believing what God says is true about you, and learning to trust Him more wherever you are walking in life. In our conversation today, Sopha shares a little bit of her family's powerful story of fleeing the Cambodian genocide and starting their family in Chicago. Her Mom became a single parent after a tragedy at a very young age, and she and her siblings grew up under the umbrella of incredible strength, and resilience, but also so much grief. There is much to unpack growing up as the helper when you become a parent, isn't there? Learning to find value in yourself and just being who you are, not what you have to offer, seeing the value in taking care of and holding space for yourself to just be but also to heal. Sopha shares about how God has met her in all of these places, showing her what a good and trustworthy Father He truly is, and how He heals and redeems, and when we are deeply rooted in Him, we can come to know Him and find life. I felt like this was a message for those who need to know the heart of God is for them. The wrestling of standards of the world, and feeling like you are never enough, and those who struggle to understand who God is and who He is not. Our deep fears that came from how we grow up, and how we misunderstood Him, can hold us back from seeing who He has always been. Take the risk, friends. There is so much life, goodness, and hope for you in Him. If that's you today, I hope you know that you matter, and your story matters.   Connecting with Sopha: Book: 100 Days of Living Deeply Rooted Facebook Instagram (Living Deeply Rooted) Instagram 2 (Sopha's!) Six out of ten Americans have been diagnosed with one or more chronic illnesses, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. While this statistic may seem shocking, even more astounding is the lack of research into common diseases, such as Lyme Disease, that Oakley's client lives with every day. Many people don't know that inflammation in the body can create overwhelming anxiety. Because of a lack of understanding of the connection between these symptoms, people with chronic illness diagnoses are often left untreated or even worse, gaslighted about the very real nature of what they're experiencing. As Oakley reminds her clients and listeners, the physical body is intimately connected with the mental, emotional and spiritual health of an individual. In this episode, she digs deeper with her client into some of the familial patterns that may have played a role in the physical expression of her disease. Healing generational trauma begins with awareness. This resilient young woman was able to identify unhealthy patterns such as body shaming, codependency, and emotional manipulation within her family relationships and has made choices to set appropriate boundaries. Taking back control of her life has increased her self-esteem and given her the confidence she needs to move forward with healthy relationships with friends, her partner, and most importantly, herself. Main Topics Oakley's client discusses her chronic illness diagnoses of Lyme, Labisia, and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) (2:06) The definition of gaslighting and how to validate your own experiences (12:30) The connection between disease and anxiety (18:55) Trigger Warning: Oakley's client shares about her early teenage years when she felt suicidal and struggled with self-harm (23:03) How caretaking can easily become a person's identity, leading to codependency (31:05) Education about sexual health and various strains of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) for female-bodied individuals (40:50) Conscious coping mechanisms and setting boundaries (49:10)   Episode LinksThe Body Keeps the Score- Bessel van der KolkBetterhelp.comPsychologytoday.com Want to learn more or apply to be a guest on Sex, Drugs and Enlightenment?Check out the website!https://www.sexdrugsandenlightenment.comConnect with Oakley:https://oakleyogden.comhttps://www.instagram.com/oakleyogden/https://www.linkedin.com/in/oakley-ogden-7a86b112/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxn6BnlaAAK_i9utOIg2KOQListen, rate, and subscribe!

Childhood. It can be one of the best times of your life. No real responsibilities. You are just learning, growing, and becoming the person you were meant to be. While some of us wish we could have stayed little forever and avoided adulting and big responsibilities, others couldn't wait to grow up. They couldn't wait to be able to go out on their own, provide for themselves, make their own decisions, have control, and start a new life. Not everyone grows up in a home with a perfect family with a white picket fence. Family trauma is real. And if you have experienced family trauma and have the opportunity to start your own family, breaking the cycles of family trauma can feel like a heavy process. Today, we have Libby Ward from Diary of an Honest Mom on our show. Libby is all too familiar with this topic. She's a digital creator, speaker, and mental health advocate with a deep commitment to breaking the cycles of family trauma. Libby knows that being a mom is hard and wants other moms to know that it's normal to feel that way. She wants to change the narrative on what it means to be a "good mom" and remind others that taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your kids. We couldn't agree more. In this episode, Libby is sharing with us how to break the cycles of family trauma and move forward. She knows firsthand how important it is to heal from the past and become the mom you want to be for your own family. With her words of wisdom and advice, we feel like you will leave this episode knowing good steps to take to move forward and break the cycles of family trauma that you may have experienced. Mushfiqa Monica Jamaluddin is an Embodied Futures Researcher and Leadership Coach whose curiosity and sincerity are as invaluable as her perspicacity. Her clients have called her their trusted advisor, vision-holder, and midwife for their dreams, but she thinks of herself simply as a partner in exploration.    She is fascinated by relationality: how the ways we relate – to ourselves, to others, and to our environments – can shape, heal, and expand us. Her work is guided by her core desire to move the needle on a world that operates from fear, scarcity and contraction to one that operates from love, enoughness, and expansion.   Mushfiqa has supported clients in getting clear on their greatest visions and bringing them to life, and in the process stepping into their fullest expression as leaders across all domains of life. She does this through 1:1 coaching, group coaching, and workshops that support individuals and organizations navigate interpersonal challenges, manage in times of transition, and create space for integration. On today's episode of the Soul Connection Duo Podcast, Alexa and Sydney connect with certified Grief Coach, Laura Kay! Laura came to realize that life was far too short following the loss of her brother in 2014 and her mother in 2018. She decided to start leveraging her grief experience, and completely transformed her life by fulfilling her life's mission of helping others navigate life after loss and experience true growth through grief. Laura shares some of the tools she uses to help her clients navigate through the messy (not linear) grieving process, including how to alleviate the awkward scenarios that we so often experience following the loss of someone close to us. We chat about the importance of setting boundaries, creating rituals and game plans in grief, as well as preparing for anniversaries, deathversaries, and holidays. Laura's process includes having different plans in place ahead of time, so that if Plan A doesn't work, Plan B or C are ready as backup! This can assist anyone who is grieving to be able to manage interactions in a way that feels right for them. The more we can start talking about grief and empowering ourselves to become comfortable with it, the more we can empower others to become comfortable with these conversations too, as we are not meant to navigate this difficult journey alone. Laura works with individuals at different stages of the grieving process and reminds us that everyone's journey is unique as no love, loss, and grief journey are the same. Her grief coaching sessions help clients to heal, grow, transform, and live life as their truest, most authentic selves. Laura's passion for the subject truly makes learning about grief FUN! In this meeting of the minds discussion, we're joined by three of the world's leading experts on addiction: Dr. Gabor Maté, Dr. Richard Schwartz, and Professor Marc Lewis. Although their backgrounds vary widely, with Gabor initially training as a medical doctor, Richard as a family therapist and Marc as a developmental psychologist and neuroscientist, all three of them have reached similar conclusions in their understanding of, and approach to treating addiction. In a lively and wide-ranging discussion, we explore: - Why do we need to approach problems with addiction not by asking: "what's wrong with it?", but instead by asking, “what's right with it?" - Why both the ‘self-indulgent' and ‘disease' models of addiction are both fundamentally flawed and harmful (from a scientific point of view) - The root causes - How the internal family systems (IFS) model can improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying addiction - How Gabor Maté's Compassionate Inquiry approach can help heal addictions by simply asking the right questions from a place of compassion and genuine curiosity - Why IFS therapy may be one of the most effective approaches out there for working with addictions. This got me interested in the possibility of having a mystical experience of my own on psychedelics. I also learned about the potential mental health benefits of psychedelics and hoped they could be used to treat depression. In this episode, I describe some of my experiences using psilocybin, edible cannabis, and ayahuasca. In this episode, we're joined by Emotional Wellbeing Coach Rosie Withey. Rosie has spent her whole life on and around horses: competing, training and simply spending time with them. They have supported her through some of her darkest times and accompanied her on some of her most exhilarating experiences and she has learned (and continue to learn) so much from them. Rosie trained as a Riding Coach, qualified as a BHSAI in 1986 and built Hartley Riding Centre from scratch. In 1999 a life-changing opportunity came her way. Rosie was offered the role of Show Jumping coach to the British Pentathlon team and trained the team to Olympic success. At about the same time Rosie became interested in complementary therapies and trained in Reiki, Radionics, Hypnotherapy and Life Coaching. In 2003 she sold the Riding Centre and took some time out to consider how to bring together all her skills. In 2006, having moved to a lovely new home with her partner Andy, Rosie bought a new horse, called Jack and with him came my answer to what next! Rosie's personal journey with Jack led her to Arizona to train and qualify in Equine Facilitated Learning in 2010. What she learned about the importance of congruence and authenticity now forms the basis of her work. The philosophy that underlies all of Rosie's work, is that your relationship to yourself, and the ability to be who you really are, is the foundation from which all relationship springs – with your loved ones, your professional colleagues, and your wider community. In 2017 Rosie also began to transfer some of the emotional intelligence and mindful elements of my EFL work into online coaching. Rosie now has a variety of work which includes online coaching; 121 equine facilitated learning sessions with Jack and Bramble and 3, 4 and 12-day workshops at her venue near Monmouth. In this episode, we explore: emotional wellbeing suppressing emotions what message our emotions are conveying fear vs vulnerability working with horses congruence masking emotions congruency vs authenticity envy and loads more. IIC 67:  Catholic and UnCatholic Sex in Catholic MarriagesSaturday, May 8, 202110:27 AM The Windup – our common ground, a quick summary of where we are today Let's get down to it.   Most of us Catholic married folk have deep desires within us for authentic, loving, joyful, intimate sexual sharing with our spouses  We want to be loving our spouses, we want to make love to our spouses in ways that are healthy, ordered, and holy.  We want to know our spouses and be known, to accept our spouses and be accepted, to be loved and to love.  And at least intellectually, we know that God  wants that for us too.   The Hurdle:  The shared problem Or at least, we all had those desires in the past.  Maybe we've given up on them.  Maybe we're discouraged, disheartened. So many Catholic spouses are.  It's common and it's tragic.  But it makes sense to me.  Why?   Because Sexuality is usually the trickiest and most difficult part of the marriage relationship. Let me say that again.   We want  deep, loving, joyful, intimate sexual sharing with our spouses But often there's pressure, shame, guilt, anger, conflict, tension, frustration, disagreement, disharmony, sullenness, withdrawal, disconnection, feelings of helplessness, avoidance, resignation and dozens of other painful experiences.   We are wounded in a lot of different ways, and those attachment wound, those integrity wounds impact how Catholic spouses related to each other sexually.   Sex is the most sensitive barometer God wants Catholic couples not to just have sex -- animals can and do copulate but ordered, healthy sexual intimacy.   Stakes are high.  Our Lady of Fatima on Sexual Sins  Jacinta later revealed that according to Our Lady, “The sins which cause most souls to go to hell are the sins of the flesh,” or sins against chastity. For many Catholic spouses, the sexual situation can seem impossible 28% of Catholic marriages end in divorce, and it's probably safe to say that the sexual intimacy isn't great in those relationships  Many, many others suffer from significant problems and issues in the sexual relationship.   There is no other area of Catholic life so fraught with complexity, nuance, so sensitive to disorder and dysfunction in the married life.  Why?   Because sex is so often wrenched out of context Procreation  Union, the bond of the spouses  Catholic spouses often look to their sexual relationship to solve problems that do not originate there.  Misuse of sexuality in the service of trying to get deeper needs met -- attachment needs and integrity needs.  Episode 62 But you know what?  There are solutions.  There are ways out, even for spouses who are really jaded, really disheartened and discouraged.  And we are going to talk about those ways out, the promise of solutions.  We're going to talk about the Good News of Catholic sexual married life today. All things, all things work together for good for those who love the Lord.  Romans 8:28.  All things.  No exceptions.  All things, St. Paul tells us, there is no asterisk or footnote that excludes your particular sexual situation.  All things.  The caveat -- for those who love the Lord.  That means childlike trust, great confidence.   So many Catholic couples could have such a better life of sexual intimacy.  That is so possible, even though it may not seem believable, because of a history of disappointment, false starts, and discouragement. If you feel like you're Charlie Brown and I'm Lucy, holding a football for you, about to yank it away when you try one more time… I get that.  Stay with me, listen a while longer, and see if you find some new ideas, new ways of looking at things.  I know it may be that you've been married 20, 30 years or more -- but some and see what I have to say.   I am clinical psychologist Peter Malinoski, your host and guide This is episode 67 of the weekly podcast Interior Integration for Catholics  And it is titled: Catholic and UnCatholic Sex in Catholic Marriages  Thank you for being here with me   Interior Integration for Catholics is part of our online outreach Souls and Hearts at soulsandhearts.com Which is all about your human formation, all about shoring up your natural foundation for a solid Catholic spiritual life  We are doing a whole series of episodes on Sexuality in Catholic Marriages   We are using the image of a Catholic canopied marriage bed.   And today, we are focusing on the the Fitted Sheet, the top sheet and the blankets Fitted Sheet -- Eros, the sexual attraction, the intensity of sexual passion, the actual physical, sexual contact  Top Sheet -- Communication between the Catholic spouses  Blankets -- Heartfelt warmth and affection, the emotional connection.   The Vision  -- The inspiring option, the way over the problem Four Major point -- Four central concepts.   The human and spiritual formation of the spouse influence the quality of their sexual experience.  Sex always happens in a relational context The relational context influences the quality of the sexual experience between the spouses Sexual intimacy is a great good, but there are time when it may not be best.   Repeat the four points.   The human and spiritual formation of the spouse influence the quality of their sexual experience.   Human formation of the husband and wife are two of the four legs of the bed.   Focusing in here again on interior integration -- how integrated are we in the sexual sphere That sexual integration is going to depend on our human formation -- and on all the aspect represented in the Catholic canopied marriage bed check out Episode 58.   Another leg of the bed is understanding ourselves and our spouse from an Internal Family Systems perspective, which I think is so helpful.   As living human being, we have a unity -- each human person is one But also each human person has parts.  within each person are separate collections thoughts, emotions, attitudes, impulses, desires, abilities, interests, relational styles, body sensations, and worldviews that are not just transient emotional states, but rather constitute discrete “parts,” subpersonalities or distinct modes of operating within the person's larger internal system -- they seem like selves within us.  Each part within us can phenomenologically seem like its own little person, with its own particular range of emotion, style of expression, abilities, desires views of the world.  Modes of operating Subpersonalities Orchestra model Focus is on integration.   Get forced into extreme roles -- attachment injuries and relational traumas   And each part has a different position or attitude about sexuality and sexual intimacy.   When they are disconnected from the core self, each part has an agenda, each part is trying to pursue some perceived good for the whole self.   Parts -- embody the voices.  Unintegrated parts always get what they don't want.   Deep assumptions held by different parts of a somewhat scrupulous young married Catholic woman High Moralizing Critical Part --  God doesn't really want us to have sex.  Sex is dirty, bad --   So I shouldn't enjoy it.  Plus, we should be punished for the fooling around we did before we were married.   Dependent Part I need have sexual relations with my husband so that he won't abandon me emotionally because I can't bear it when he is cold and distant.   Intellectual Part:  Christopher West in his TOB books discusses how beautiful Catholic Sexuality is, so there has to be beauty and goodness in it somewhere and so we can't just refuse to have sexual intimacy.     Approval seeking part I should be enjoying sex more than I do  To make my husband happier with me so that he is kinder to me and more likely to meet my needs.   In the next episode, episode 68,  I will get into stories of Catholic married couples and how their parts interact to illustrate how complex all this can be.   Sexual acts always happens in a relational context  Wait a minute, Dr. Peter.  Example of masturbation "Solosexuals"  Command to "Love your neighbor as yourself."  Parts have very different attitudes about masturbation.   Also, as a baptized Catholic, you are a member of the body of Christ, and all your actions impact the rest of the body, the rest of the members of the Church   Example of pornography Clicks being counted, demand being noted, ads being sold  Your time being used up.   Alienation from God and others.  The relational context influences the quality of the sexual experience That relational context strips away superficial ways of coping, exposes deeper vulnerabilities, issues.   We need to be working on the relational context The rest of the bed.  (Review)   The sheet alone will not support us.  So many people hope that the sheet will support their weight, suspended in midair It's easier to hope that you can just find quick solutions   We need the rest of the bed This is a harder and longer road, but it is much more sure  The rock-solid floor in the bedroom is the Foundation -- The presence of God -- and an active belief in God's Providence   Four legs -- now more in the natural realm Leg 1 -- the husband's commitment to his own interior integration, his own human formation, his psychological health, his emotional wellbeing -- removing the beam from his own eye  Leg 2.  the wife's commitment to her own interior integration, her own human formation, her own psychological health, her own emotional wellbeing -- her taking on her own personal responsibility for her natural life  Leg 3.  Attachment theory -- Attachment theory is really important because it addresses ways to really address the unmet psychological, relational, and emotional needs that we discussed in the last episode, episode 57 as The One Main Psychological Reason Why Catholic Marriages Fail.   Leg 4.  Internal Family Systems approaches -- really understanding how the human person is both a unity and a multiplicity -- like we have One God in Three Persons, each of us is also one, but with many parts.    The Frame  and the Box Spring -- this holds the whole bed together and it represents the firm commitment between the husband and the wife, the upholding of the marriage vows,  I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life.  It's the charity.  Willing the highest good for one another The Mattress -- Empathetic attunement -- really knowing the spouse, really being able to enter into the phenomenological world of the spouse  The pillows  empathy for the Spouse -- Five kinds -- Episode 65   Many sexual problems have their roots in childhood.   Not really sexual problems per se -- relational problems, attachment problems, integrity issues That manifest themselves through sexual symptoms.   Main Psychological Reason Why Catholic Marriages Fail -- Episode 57,  Parts with unmet attachment needs.  Deep relational needs, often unconscious Old stuff gets activated by sex.   Some sexual problems have their roots in the relationship Unresolved tension about premarital sexual activity  Issues around expectations   Issues around boundaries Disagreements about what should happen and how in the marriage bed.   Issues around dignity   Abstaining before marriage -> Now it's legal!  a deep sense of entitlement, setting up false expectations  You are not entitled to great sex Where is that in Catholic teaching?  According to the world, you are entitled to great sex.   That is a gift, not a right - 1998   You're not entitled to "Sex your way."  Have it your way, Burger Kind 1974   Expectation of everyone knowing the choreography In reality, this takes time to learn, there's a learning curve quick transfer   Communication -- top sheet Five love languages Gary Chapman.   Words of affirmation Quality Time Acts of Service Gifts Physical Touch I can't breathe when you are on top of me.  Blankets -- the warmth, the relational affection. We need this to be complete   Sex is so embodied The Body Keeps the Score -- Bessel van der Kolk  Deep unmet relational needs, deep unmet integrity needs held in our bodies.   Things we are holding in our bodies, outside of awareness, can be activated by sex Marlboro men -- tough guys -- can regress -- don't need anything, anyone, but they need sex!   Body changes Endocrinology -- so extreme  Neurophysiology  Huge impact of body processes  All in relationship with another person.   So much self-absorption  Idolization of sex Traumatized via sex -- seek to be redeemed by sex.  But sex does not heal trauma wounds.  That is not it's role.  Sex as a symbol -- a parts wants to believe that we are solidly grounded  Physical closeness implies real relational intimacy, connection.  Similar to tattoos PB Husbands essentially masturbating in sex with their wives So caught up in their own needs, their own parts taking over.   Animals have sex.  They don't "make love."  And when human merely have sex, we're acting worse than animals, because we could know better.   Idea of the "marital debt." Vows -- the gift of the body to each other.  By virtue of the marriage, wives and husbands possess each other's bodies.  In other words, you owe yourself to your spouse.     Sex as a gift of self  Primary responsibility to your own well-being.  Sexual relations should never degrade or harm either of the spouses.  If that happens, both spouses are harmed.  One flesh.   Husbands as debt collectors --guys, is that how you want to be seen by your wives -- as Hector the marital debt collector? Boom, boom, boom Creepy and weird -- where's the gift, where's the love? Wife is God's beloved daughter Knew a man who demanded sex twice per day from his wife.  Didn't matter where she was.  No excuses.  Threat of masturbation The debt is a lot more than just sex -- it is our whole selves.   Eve -- from Adam's rib, not his skull, not his foot -- equally yoked.   Think of the anatomy -- woman allowing not just part of man, but all of the man inside her.   Symbolism  Intrusion Rape    “Rape is about power, not sex.” Understand the intention behind the statement -- more than sex.   Rape is always about sex Because it is expressed, manifested sexually.   Is God present? -- He is, whether you want him to be or not.   The sacredness of sex Sacramental aspects of sex Furtive sex in a hidden zone Ways that sex can be un-Catholic  The matter -- the act itself -- ordered, oriented to the bond of marriage, oriented to procreation? Is it really?  The foreplay card.   Why does this thing bring me to orgasm -- why am I attracted to it. If we can't symbolize it in works, we're likely to enact   Oral sex  Anal sex   The intention / motivation / orientation To get my needs met   Sex will not resolve deep unmet attachment needs or deep unmet integrity needs (Episode 62) Just like food won't or drugs won't  That's not what sex is for.   Heartset, Mindset, Soulset Fantasies about another sexual partner  -- Christ's words: MT 5:28  But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  Violations of dignity  What a husband saw in a pornographic movie.   Sexual intimacy is a great good, but there are time when it may not be best.   Sometimes it's impossible Injuries, medical conditions  9 months pregnant, immediately post-partum.   Sometimes it's inadvisable Health reasons  Trauma  Body image issues  Shame, grief, rage, abandonment issues, guilt.   Near occasion of sin  -- Fr. "Acts of kindness are more important than anything we can imagine." CW: Abuse, Adverse Childhood Experiences, Trauma Fritzi Hortsman's life turned around when she started to learn about trauma, and adverse childhood experiences. The insight into something which had flavoured her entire life, and the ability to now address this that that had laid dormant and unacknowledged for so long, also formed part a great compassionate drive and inspiration to start the Compassion Prison's Project. Fritzi's understanding that we can be almost exclusively shaped by adverse childhood experiences, and that this is far more present in society that we would care to admit, coincided with her visiting a prison for the first time. Instead of seeing what we are trained to see, (ne'er-do-wells) she saw kindred spirits. Fellow human's also suffering, also weighed down, also living in a state of constant fear created by the experience of many great traumas. Her work has allowed so many to access emotions for so many men and women who are suffering imprisonment, to find forgiveness for themselves so that they can move beyond living in the moment of trauma that they are in. Her extraordinary film Step Inside the Circle shows how the impact of trauma shapes our society, how many of those we imprison are actually some of the most traumatised people, and that becoming a trauma aware culture has unlimited transformational potential. My guest today is a testament to the value of good support and investing in yourself. To hear a strong woman articulate her trauma, to see and hear that she is not broken and is using her experiences as a conduit for others’ growth – well, that’s just my happy place. I will never tire of this privilege – what it means to receive these stories and have people trust me with them. Rachael Rose is a full spectrum Dynamo doula hell-bent on bringing down toxic birth culture and supporting women to reconnect to their resilience and strength. Rachael is such a calm, sunny presence. I know this is a big topic, but you’ll walk away from this conversation feeling expanded rather than contracted. We talk about what happens when a birthing person ticks that box and says “yes. I’ve had experience of sexual abuse”, and, in Rachael’s case what happens when it’s never spoken about again. What can we be doing to better serve people and give them choices, make them the expert in what they need to feel safe. Sexual abuse, assault, molestation or whatever language we put to it must exist within a spectrum. It must never be about getting into comparisons and expecting people to qualify “does this count?”. It’s not a cognitive experience, it’s a bodily one. Sometimes it’s not until you are a much older, or go through pregnancy and birth that you begin to think about some of the experiences you’ve had as a child. Applying the label of ‘sexual abuse’ is complex. Rachael and I will talk about the impact of the abuse she experienced, but not go into detail as we are mindful of re-traumatisation. We talk about navigating all the bodily things - vaginal exams, stretch and sweeps, catheters, suppositories, language that is used, positions the body is put in. Having hands-on from other people when you’re learning to breastfeed. And then some of the anxieties that happen postpartum. Those intrusive thoughts that happen that are totally normal but no one ever wants to talk about. As I’ve said before, the goal needs to be establishing safety, not getting the information. You are more powerful than you know. If birthworkers and the people they serve remember that they are powerful, then we will change the world. In this meeting, we continued our discussion of How we create or even curate our reality by what we bring forward to the situation. We consider some additional quotes by Marcus Aurelius from his work Meditations. In the second part, we branched off into discussing the impacts of trauma on our perceptions and experience. Discussing both small t and big T traumas and the all-important resources to meet challenges that life inevitably brings.   Quotes mentioned in this show: " I used to live in a room full of mirrors; all I could see was me. I take my spirit and I crash my mirrors, now the whole world is here for me to see." - Jimi Hendrix Quotes by Marcus Aurelius from his work Meditations: “Today I escaped anxiety. Or no, I discarded it, because it was within me, in my own perceptions—not outside.” “It’s silly to try to escape other people’s faults. Just try and escape your own.”  ”Ask: What is so unbearable about this situation? Why can’t you endure it? You will be embarrassed to answer.” Reading Recommendations: The Four Agreements - don Miguel Ruiz The Body Keeps the Score - Bessel van der Kolk, MD

As women, it is so important for us to tap into our creative resources for problem-solving, ideation and creation, but because we live so much of our lives in the busy “beta” brainwave state it can be really challenging to do so. In this episode, we talk about the brainwave states associated with manifesting and practices we can do to bring ourselves into those states. We talk about how important it is to be more open and receptive to the world around us and we share a discussion about the stories and labels we give to creativity - which may be hindering our creative journey. What would you do right now if you believed you were more creative? This episode focuses on a topic that I have not yet covered on the blog or podcast to date; autism and being a survivor. So when Kelli Gettel contacted me and wanted to share her story of living with Autism, PTSD, Narcolepsy, and being raised by a Narcissistic parent, I knew this was going to be an episode that would be as educational as much as it will be inspiring. Kelli is an entrepreneur living in the central Pennsylvania area, and a parent of 3 children, including a 4 yr old who also was diagnosed with autism. As you'll hear on the podcast, Kelli has overcome tremendous odds in her life, as so many survivors do, and wants to help others understand life with the challenges she faces. By doing so she wants to educate others that these are not reasons to stay silent, isolated, and living in fear or shame. Rather, by utilizing the power of research and learning about your situation, you can find ways to adapt and overcome, and reach others with a positive, stigma fighting message. Some of her challenges we discuss on the show include: Life as a female, living on the autism spectrum; including when she was diagnosed, the struggles of non-verbal communication with others. How Narcolepsy affects her relationships, and how Narcolepsy can be a form of Dissociation. Sensory Struggles; the challenges of not being able to filter out surrounding sounds and distractions to be able to focus on a single event or conversation. Social Rules & Protocols - how she had to, and continues to learn how to interact in a social setting. Things that come natural to others have to be learned and adjusted too, which can cause struggles in relationships of all types. Her ability to think in pictures; in her mind she sees life in the form of pictures and moving images, so trying to translate that into words and communicate her thoughts can be a huge challenge. We also touch a bit on her life growing up with a parent who had narcissistic tendencies, and how she's learning more about understanding her alters and using the IFS model to help. As you'll also hear how Kelli is so proud of her youngest son, who, diagnosed with autism, taught himself to read before the age of two and is a huge Beatles fan, knowing every song they've ever written and nearly everything about the band. Which also leads into our chat about some of the things that she wants to share about how she's adapting to the daily struggles that multiple diagnoses can bring: Education has been so important to Kelli; especially reading books to help understand what she's experiencing, and make sense of the challenges in her life. She shares some of the books that she has found especially helpful; some of which you might recognize: The Body Keeps the Score - Bessel van der Kolk Neuro Tribes, The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity - Steve Silberman Boundaries - John Townsend & Henry Cloud In Sheep's Clothing - George K. Simon This was such an incredible podcast, and as you'll hear there was no way we could fit in everything that Kelli wanted to share, in just one show. So be on the lookout for future episodes with Kelli as we dive a bit deeper into particular areas of her life. If you'd like to connect with Kelli Gettel, you can reach her on Facebook. If you would like connect with her, she requests that you please be sure and let her know that you found her via the Beyond Your Past Podcast. Thank you again Kelli for joining me!
