Lee didn't listen to his family or teachers and quit law to pursue an acting career. As someone of Asian heritage and not seeing himself represented on Australian screens, Lee packed his bags and headed for bright light and relocated to the Hollywood of the north, Vancouver to try and make it in this world of acting. In this episode we discuss all sorts such as how far the pendulum has swung regarding diversity and that it's actually harder now than it was before. We also have a really interesting discussion around the O1 visa and some of the restrictions. It turns out its really not as easy as just having an O1 and being able to work. Lee is a super nice bloke and is now trying his luck in Hollywood. His credits include Supernatural, Arrow and a recurring role on The man in the high castle. Lee Shorten is an actor and a filmmaker who brings a unique perspective to both of those roles. As an actor, Lee digs for nuance and authenticity. We saw it in The Man in the High Castle. We saw it in The Terror: Infamy. And we saw it in It's Not You. It's Not Me, a short film about sexuality. As a filmmaker, Lee is sensitive and fearless. He wrote and directed Parabola, a moving short starring Hiro Kanagawa as an aging Yakuza assassin, and Mayumi Yoshida as his emotionally fraught daughter. Before that, he wrote and starred in a short film – The Day We Met – that was funded by Storyhive, co-directed by Mayumi and Nach Dudsdeemaytha, and inspired by his own adoption story. And he co-wrote and co-directed The Chaddening, a comedy short that gleefully mined horror film tropes. And Lee hasn't slowed down during COVID-19. He's still creating work – at least three films, at last count. In this thoughtful interview with Sabrina Furminger, Lee Shorten reflects on his films, his popular role on The Man in the High Castle (and lessons he learned from co-star Joel de la Fuente), and how he's pushing himself to stay creative during “The Quar.” Episode sponsor: UBCP/ACTRA

Doomfist main, Slytherin, and the actor behind Walt Yoshida AMC's The Terror, Lee Shorten sits down to talk about his experience on the show and more. The Terror: Infamy, the second season of AMC's horror anthology, centers on a series of bizarre deaths that haunt a Japanese American community, and a young man's journey to understand and combat the malevolent entity responsible. In addition, the series is one of the first depicting the internment of Japanese Americans on such a massive scale – complete with authentically recreated camps in scope and scale as post-WWII. As Walt, Shorten plays Chester’s oldest childhood friend and a Japanese American struggling to protect his family and friends amid the horrors of WWII and the Japanese American Internment Camps. When it comes to his character, Walt represents a personality between Chester and Ken who are polar opposites. Shorten came into The Terror's cast after working on Man in The High Castle, as well, another Yoshida, and was looking to work on another project with the same producer. A big fan of horror, take a listen to hear about why he loves the genre and how The Terror: Infamy uses both the monstrosities of the United States and a Japanese ghost story to tell a relevant story while also shedding a light on an often-ignored part of our history. While there were technical difficulties with the beginning of the interview, the audio picks up as Shorten describes what it's like to play Walt and how he got into character to film one of the most devastating scenes of the season so far in episode two.
Lee Shorten is an Asian, film, television and theatre actor. Lee grew up in Tamworth, Australia, where he was raised by his adoptive parents Merv and Judy. Lee is best known for playing Sergeant Yoshida on Amazon's 'The Man in the High Castle' and Walt Yoshida on AMC's 'The Terror: Infamy'. In this episode Lee chats with your favorite host Galaxy about his love of comics and being a Geek. One of Lee's cool moments on the Terror was acting along side George Takei aka Sulu and James Saito aka the Shredder from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie. Lee graduated from Law School (University of Newcastle) in 2009 and worked as lawyer for several years before he decided to pursue a career as an actor. Lee also guest starred on Van Helsing as Master Tsui, a role specifically written for him by the Van Helsing team and recurred as on Supernatural as a fan favorite Demon. Lee has been nominated for a Jessie Award, for his portrayal of Jung in Pacific Theatre's production of 'Kim's Convenience'. In 2018, Lee made his directorial debut with the award winning Ultra Short 'J'adoube'. Lee is committed to telling inclusive stories and continues to be a strong advocate for representation.
