Julia Aoki hosts a discussion with Dr. Sibo Chen and Dr. Cary Wu on anti-Asian racism during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Chen, assistant professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, discusses his research on media narratives, political polarization, and disinformation. Dr. Wu, an associate professor at York University, highlights the rise of anti-Asian racism and its impact on mental health. Sibo emphasizes the importance of bringing together diverse voices, including scholars, community practitioners, and journalists, to discuss and address the long-lasting impact of anti-Asian racism, which intensified during the pandemic. The conversation also covers the importance of understanding different perceptions of racism within Asian communities and the need for transdisciplinary research to address these issues effectively. “You can re-imagine anything.” This was life advice that fashion designer Phillip Lim was given by his mother. His family escaped the Khmer Rouge and came to America as refugees. They had no resources and had to start over from scratch. Somehow, Phillip rose to become one of the most successful fashion designers in the world. He started his label 3.1 Phillip Lim with his business partner when they were both just 31 years old.In this heartfelt episode of House Call, we catch Phillip in a moment of evolution, surprising the fashion world by stepping away from his company and starting a new, unknown chapter in his life. As he opens up about his continuous journey of becoming, of re-imagining his life, Phillip and the Surgeon General ponder: how do you distinguish between success and fulfillment? How does being part of a community help our mental health? Why is creativity and sense of play so important? What is the connection between beauty and the values we live? While they come from very different worlds of medicine and fashion, Phillip and the Surgeon General are both guided by love of community, a desire to help others, and the inspiration of their mothers.(02:46) What role has Phillip Lim's mom played in his life?(06:20) How did Phillip Lim maintain a sense of optimism in his early life?(09:20) How did curiosity and creativity put Phillip Lim on an unexpected path?(15:27) How did Phillip Lim navigate the competitive world of fashion?(18:54) What practices does Phillip Lim use to stay grounded?(23:02) What is the difference between success and fulfillment for Phillip Lim?(26:33) How can we find the courage to make big life changes?(31:58) How is Phillip Lim building community and advocating for mental health?(42:32) What message does Dr. Murthy have for Phillip Lim's mother?(48:05) Phillip Lim asks Dr. Murthy for advice on empowering others to be seen, heard, and show up for each other. We'd love to hear from you! March 16th, 2021, 21 year old Robert Long opened fire in three different massage parlors in Atlanta, Georgia. Claiming he was fueled by sexual addiction and wanting to rid the world of those temptations, he went to spas he previously had paid for sex and killed 8 and injured 1 other. Although he claimed it wasn't a racist attack, the media ran with that narrative at a time when Covid-19 was causing resentment against the Asian community. Welcome to Season 4, Episode 6. Father Jun is one of our favorite characters on Warrior… so we were so unbelievably excited to have a conversation with Perry Yung! With about 30 acting credits to his name for TV and Film, Perry has also worked on stage and in music. We also love how he merges his activism and beliefs into his acting and music. In this conversation, we talk a little about his love of music, the shakuhachi flute, the SLANT Performance group that he co-founded, his journey as an actor, the special experience on Warrior, his directorial debut with the Stop Asian Hate! Love One Another short film, Grace Lee Boggs (we did an episode on her for S01E04), creative agency, and so much more. Warrior was not renewed by Max (Boo!), but the first three seasons will be released on Netflix on February 16th (Yay!). To get a season 4, it's essential for Netflix to understand what Warrior means to the Asian American community and the world of diverse stories. Supporting Warrior supports stories for all underrepresented groups. So if you have Netflix, please support them on February 16th and beyond! And If you don't have Netflix… maybe you should get it just to watch Warrior. We begin this episode by talking about the Asian Classical Music Initiative (ACMI), and the upcoming 2024 ACMI @ MSMU International Conference. It's going to be held on April 13th and April 14th, 2024 at Mount Saint Mary's University in Los Angeles, and it's open to the public. Please check out ACMI and their upcoming conference. If you're a performer, composer, or scholar, you can apply to present… or you could just attend and learn. For more info, go to www.kuacmi.com/2024-conference-call. Again, please support Warrior when it releases on Netflix! And if you want to see more of Perry Yung, visit his acting site, his Yung Flutes site, follow him on Instagram @perryyungofficial, follow his band Judo Club, and look out for the short film Stop Asian Hate! Love One Another at the DisOrient Asian American Film Festival in Eugene, Oregon Live March 8-10 and Virtual March 11-17 (and hopefully many other places). Allyship is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as “the quality or practice of helping or supporting other people who are part of a group that is treated badly or unfairly, although you are not yourself a member of this group. One of the most important ways to practise allyship is just to listen. Allyship means using your power, position, or privilege to uplift others.” It is also an acronym for Action, Listening, Learning and Yielding (A.L.L.Y.).From #BlackLivesMatter, #StopAsianHate, #LGTBQIA+rights to the #warinGaza and the #warinUkraine, there have been numerous global incidents over the last few years that have garnered attention and highlighted the need for allies. In this episode, we discuss allyship, what it is, the challenges of it, why it is necessary, how to properly inform oneself and encourage participation in some causes. We also delve into allyship on the ground level as Zimbabweans, dissecting patriarchy and how men can be allies against it. This is truly a layered topic which evokes a myriad of emotions and questions. How can you be an ally? What should you read to be properly informed when seeking to be an ally? What is the best way to be an ally? Delve deeper with us into allyship and how complex yet necessary it is. This is the fifth episode in our ongoing #StopAsianHate series where we explore the intersection between anti-Asian hate and the film and television industry. May is Asian Heritage Month, and to paraphrase Sandra Oh, it's an honour to celebrate the depth and breadth of what it means to be Asian. Asian is a big word; Asia is comprised of nearly 50 countries, billions of people, thousands of cultures and languages and ways of life. So when we celebrate Asian Heritage each May, we are celebrating billions of threads that weave together to become the dazzling, storied, and vast continent that is Asia. But for those of us in the diaspora, Asian Heritage Month is tinged with the knowledge that it can be dangerous to be Asian. During the pandemic, hate crimes against Asians in Vancouver rose nearly 3000%. So when we in the diaspora celebrate our Asian heritage during this month, we do so with defiance. We want to revel in our cultural heritage. We want to claim our joy.Joy – and joy as a form of resistance – are central in the music video for Different Than Before. The song was written and performed by Amanda Sum and the video was directed by Mayumi Yoshida (Amanda and Mayumi visited the podcast in 2020 to talk about their first collaboration, the video for Groupthink). This new video features an Asian family out for dim sum and karaoke, celebrating the engagement of the their older daughter. There's lots of laughs, until they're heckled by a white family. The dad wants them to just ignore the racism. The daughters want – something different.Different Than Before stars Amanda Sum, Olivia Cheng, Tzi Ma, Sachin Sahel, and Amanda's mom Linda, and premiered on May 20 on Amanda's YouTube channel. Amanda and Mayumi join Sabrina for a contemplative conversation about pursuing joy in the face of hate, and how art can change the conversation. NOTE: This is our spring season finale! We'll return with new episodes in June. Thank you for getting us this far!Episode sponsor: UBCP/ACTRA

Sean: Hey, Dave. Just want to say you're a modern-day hero to a lot of people. Dave: I'm not a hero. I'm just someone that's trying to give back in a really small way. And it's really one of the prongs of my efforts around helping the community, particularly the Asian-American community. I would say, you know, we can talk more about it, but there are really three things I'm really focused on. One is helping Asians get more economic power. And unfortunately, not all of us will be Jerry Yang or Eric Yuan of Zoom. Most of us will work in companies, and most of us will need to figure out how to rise the corporate ladder. And so this book is really my gift to people trying to better themselves economically by rising the corporate ladder. Dave: The second major area of focus for me is really around policy and politics, but from a new standpoint. So I'm the vice-chairman of one of the leading Asian-American news sites in the U.S. called Asia AM News, ASAMNew.com. And we're a volunteer network. We're nonprofit, but we want to keep reporting stories that are important to the Asian community. And if you have been tracking, for instance, #StopAsianHate before, some of the more tragic events with Michelle Go and Christina Euna Lee, before those events, the mainstream news had actually stopped really reporting on Asian hate crimes. And I think there was a general perception among non-Asians that the Asian hate crimes have subsided. And in fact, that's not true at all. In fact, they've actually gotten worse. And we were one of the few news outlets that continue to report on it. So it just illustrates to me that we need a source of news for our community that will continue to report on the news that's important to us when all the other mass news outlets have gone away. So that's kind of the second major focus of mine. Dave: And then the third is entertainment. So I'm a big believer that we need to get more Asian faces and more Asian voices in the media. Otherwise, particularly in America, we will continue to be viewed as the other, will continue to be viewed as a foreigner. And so I've been working with media production companies that are primarily founded by Asian-Americans. I've helped finance them. I've helped advise them as well as I just started a new company called Reel 8 - Reel8.com where we've effectively built an NFT marketplace for Asian filmmakers to help Asian filmmakers further monetize their films. So that just kind of gives you a more holistic sense of the things that I'm focused on. And you can get a sense of the commonality is that I'm trying to help the Asian community, and that's a big focus of mine, not the least of which is because I have two boys and I want to make the world a little bit better for them when they become adults and grow older. Sean: For sure. For sure. And by the way, thank you so much for doing the work for me. I have two boys as well and I'll just ask them to read your book when they grow up. But I'll get a copy for sure. I want to read it. I'm very interested in it. - - - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/leadershipstack Join our community and ask questions here: from.sean.si/discord Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leadershipstack
In recognition of the one-year anniversary of the Atlanta spa shooting, Peter and Suah have a conversation about what it means to be Asian in America and how that experience has evolved during the pandemic.
YULA students last week were treated to a Purim spiel mocking Shalhevet, the other LA-based MO school, for its students' progressive stances on racial justice and gender and sexual equality, displaying signs with slogans like, “Don't Misgender Me,” “#BlackLivesMatter,” “#StopAsianHate” and “Free the gays.” This week, Uri and Rivky ask, does this mean anything bigger about the state of modern Orthodoxy, and its education? Is this a Jewish thing? A frum thing? A high school boy thing? Is this just representative of the country?

*** Check out the https://amerex.substack.com/ (America Explained Substack newsletter) for a few free written posts a month on the big issues in U.S. politics and foreign policy and no extra spam *** Over the past year, more and more attention has been focused on an issue which has long been submerged in mainstream discussions of American politics - racism and discrimination against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders. A wave of scapegoating and hate crimes related to the Covid-19 pandemic and the tragic spa shootings in Atlanta have made it clear how much work there still is to be done to fight this scourge. My guest today, Jeff Le, has been at the forefront of doing that work. A former policymaker who served at the highest levels of California state government as a Deputy Cabinet Secretary and deployed to Afghanistan to serve his country, over the last year Jeff has been speaking out not only about anti-Asian violence but also the structural barriers which face Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders in American politics and workplaces. Today we are talking with Jeff Le. Today's episode is a long one. Normally, I would break this out into two episodes, but I decided to give these critical and timely topics the respect they deserve, to release this episode in its entirety and let you listen to it at your leisure. I want to thank Jeff for joining me on the show and sharing his rich insight and experience with us today. In this episode of the SISU Journey podcast, Jeff Le talks about his incredible story of resilience in the face of discrimination. He shares just how important it is to have conversations about standing against Asian hate. Stay tuned! Here are the things to expect in this episode: People treat you based on what they think your perceived value is. Racism is not an innate thing, rather it's a learned thing that comes from somewhere. How he went from not owning a coat to working and traveling to about 85 countries. People who have the least always give the most. It's hard being in politics as an Asian American. Having a rank doesn't protect you from who you are if you are inherently treated as less there. It's important to have an engaged citizenry, which is really hard in a time where people don't talk to others and just stay in their little corners. Horrible things happen when good people decide not to do something. If you speak with clarity and honesty, people will take it seriously. What are some things we can do to support the Afghan people? And much more! - About Jeff Le: Pronouns: He/Him Jeff Le has had a career at the highest levels of public policy and politics at the state, federal and international levels. As the cannabis industry is booming and on the precipice of federal legalization, it must figure out how it will traverse and address racial and gender equity in its workforce. While folks who have been incarcerated for non-violent cannabis offenses are overwhelmingly people of color, those getting funding and attention in the legalized cannabis industry have often been white men. STIIIZY is a brand changing that paradigm. A Los Angeles-based cannabis company in 5 states, women of color are at the heart of STIIIZY's continuous, pivotal success. The company breaks the "white bro in weed" mold - the vast majority of its employees are people of color, women are in leadership at all levels, and the brand has critical partnerships to support the #STOPASIANHATE movement and other community-led social justice initiatives. Today on the podcast are STIIIZY executives Jackie Kim and Charmaine Chua. They discuss what it's like to be women of color in the industry, what they feel a diverse perspective brings to the market, how we can rectify the historic damage done to communities of color in the "war on drugs," why it's so important to them that their company is involved in social justice issues, and what they see as the future of the cannabis industry. LINKS: STIIIZY products are available to individuals over the age of 21 in California, Nevada, Washington, Michigan, and Arizona.
Welcome to From Woke to Work, the Anti-Racist Journey, a podcast created and hosted by Kamala Ávila-Salmon, with the mission to make an impactful dent in people's understand of how to actually combat racism. Whether you're an ally ready to take action or a black person with a bunch of ally-related questions, this podcast will draw a clear path for you to follow towards true anti-racism. Kamala is back at the mic, sooner than anticipated, to do her part in helping us have the conversations we need in order to advance racial justice. “Enough is enough!” and #StopAsianHate. To be clear- what is happening to Asians and Asian-American people in our country right now is not okay. While this podcast centered stories around Black experiences and anti-Blackness specifically, the goal is anti-racism and effective allyship and that applies to ALL of us. This is a goal that is truly universal because White supremacy attacks all people of color for the purpose of advancing and elevating Whiteness, period. To share the mic and have a discussion, she invited some really extraordinary guests. First up is Marla Teyolia, a first generation Mexican woman who is the CEO and Founder of Culture Shift Agency. Next is Kim Trin, her friend and former colleague, who is the embodiment of a co-conspirator and a practitioner of cross-racial solidarity and advocacy. Finally, we are beyond privileged to have Dr. Jennifer Ho, the daughter of a refugee father from China and an immigrant mother from Jamaica; she is the director of the Center for Humanities & the Arts at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she also holds an appointment as Professor of Ethnic Studies. Enjoy this powerful, necessary discussion. Jump straight into: (00:45) - The spike in violence and discrimination against Asians and Asian-Americans - “White supremacy attacks all people of color for the simple purpose of advancing and elevating whiteness.” (04:11) - Cross-racial nuances: 3 important facts you NEED to understand - “We have a common enemy and it is not each other. That is yet another one of the lies of white supremacy.” (07:09) - Asian-hate is old news: Why is it getting media attention now? - “It's always going to be a matter of keeping us obedient and ensuring that if we knew that we were important enough to have an opinion that should be heard, we would become too loud for white supremacy to be able to drown us out.” (13:31) - Why is it so hard to stand with Asian-Americans? - “White society has such a limited attention span and so if they're not talking about black people anymore then we're forgotten, and now they're talking about this other group.” (20:23) - The Model Minority Myth is not a compliment, it's a disservice - “The model minority myth is trying to drive a racial wedge between Asian-American and Pacific Islanders and black indigenous and Latin X people.” (24:51) - The reasons we don´t know about the historical cooperation and coalition between black and Asian communities - “We have bought into this idea that Asians and Asian-Americans are good, they are accepted, they are where we're trying to get to and they're blocking us.” (33:33) - White people need to do the work about racism at the workplace - “What you're actually afraid of is not the rejection of people of color, you're afraid of the rejection of white people.” (42:22) - What's it like living in this moment being an Asian American woman - “I'm just worried. My mother goes out to get her morning cup of coffee, will she return? Will she be harassed?.” (47:38) - Flex your antiracist muscle: The interconnectedness of the Black Lives Matter movement and the Stop Asian Hate movement - “If you're going to really show up and roll up your sleeves and do this work, it is painful, uncomfortable work, and mistakes will get made.” (52:45) - How to un-drown ourselves from the...

In this episode, I sit down with three of my fellow food Instagrammers, Michelle from @nomnompaleo who is Chinese American, Alice from @hipfoodiemom who is Korean American, and ChihYu from @iheartumami.ny who is Taiwanese American. It was such an important conversation, in light of the unthinkable level of racially motivated violence Asian Americans are experiencing in addition to decades of micro-aggressions and xenophobia. They share their own stories from a very vulnerable place, and I was honored to be a part of this heartfelt and deeply personal level of sharing about current events as well as what it was like to be an Asian American child growing up in the United States and living in a predominantly white area. Please take a moment to give this unique episode a listen and learn how to help. Find out the Five Ds of intervention by @ihollagram and how to use our collective voices to educate and illuminate. Let's do this.In addition, I feel so grateful that Michelle @nomnompaleo took the time to compile a list of resources for those looking to learn, grow, and make a difference right now. Absolutely set aside some time to click here, check them out, and share.
