The longer you create mokuhanga, the more your individual tastes reveal themselves in your own  work, your style, your ideas, and your unique way of seeing the world. These are the qualities that make a mokuhanga artist or craftsperson shine, and they represent the place many practitioners aspire to reach. On this episode of The Unfinished Print: A Mokuhanga Podcast, I speak with someone who has spent decades refining his style, developing his ideas, and defining his relationship with mokuhanga at the same time exploring a variety of printmaking mediums. Daniel Kelly lives and works in Kyoto, Japan, and for many years his work has been exhibited in galleries all around the world. It can also be found in private collections and in some of the world's most important museums. We discuss Daniel's studies under Tomikichiro Tokuriki and the lasting influence Tokuriki has had on his work. Daniel explains his preference for papers from outside Japan and why he generally avoids using Japanese washi. He also details his creative process, discusses his use of multiple printmaking mediums alongside mokuhanga, and he reflects on the advantages each brings to his practice. We also talk about galleries, selling work, and Daniel's views on tradition—and how, in some cases, it can hold artists back. Synchromism, meaning "with colour," sought to construct painting through colour alone, treating it as the primary driver of form, rhythm, and spatial depth rather than line or traditional representation. Drawing parallels with musical composition, Macdonald-Wright and Russell aimed to create visual "harmonies" where colours functioned like chords, building dynamic and structured relationships across the canvas. The result was one of the earliest American contributions to abstraction, grounded in a systematic exploration of colour as an expressive and structural force. © Popular Wheat Productions logo designed and produced by Douglas Batchelor and André Zadorozny  Introduction music while working - Lester Young / Oscar Peterson  Disclaimer: Please do not reproduce or use anything from this podcast without shooting me an email and getting my express written or verbal consent. Guest intro: Mayumi Pachkoski is a U.S.–based aesthetician and energy-healing practitioner who blended Eastern and Western skincare to build a thriving six-figure studio in Maryland. A former flight attendant who pivoted in her 30s, she now helps practitioners grow healing businesses rooted in purpose and service. 3 Power Takeaways Leap early; build skills on the way. Use "no-brainer" offers to get in the room and learn from pros. (20:07–22:36) Let purpose lead the model. When work sits at the intersection of talent, joy, and need (ikigai), consistency becomes easy. (37:26–38:24) Grow through connection, not discounts. Reward referrers; keep pricing strong; become the story people share. (28:55–31:13) Main Topics, Timestamps, Explanations & Notable Quotes Bold reinvention & "no-brainer" apprenticeships — 20:07–22:36 What it means: Proximity compounds. Offering flexible, unpaid assisting to a top practitioner compresses the learning curve, reveals real-world systems, and creates industry credibility faster than solo trial-and-error. Quote: "You don't have to even pay me… I will clean, vacuum… It's a win-win, a no-brainer offer." Mayumi Ikigai as a business operating system — 37:26–38:24 What it means: Aligning work with what one loves, does well, and what people will pay for transforms effort into enthusiasm; sustainable energy becomes a competitive advantage over hustle-based growth. Quote: "Work doesn't feel like a job… I wake up every morning excited about who I'm going to serve. That's ikigai." Mayumi Referral engines beat discounts — 28:55–31:13 What it means: Paying clients (via generous thank-you credits) to advertise outperforms cutting prices for newcomers; it preserves brand value, attracts ideal fits, and turns great results into free marketing. Quote: "New clients come with the regular price… but for you, as a thank you for the referral, I give 50% off next time." Mayumi Extra Gems (quick hits) Test the move with logistics smarts: Pre-paying six months' rent to secure housing without local job history shows how creative terms remove gatekeeper friction. (10:01–10:32) Mayumi Courageous partner talk: Ask the life-defining question early—"What do you really want?"—then build the plan around it. (05:24–06:22) Mayumi Permission to start messy: Feeling nothing in early energy-work classes didn't stop the pursuit; the right modality (Access Bars, then Quantum Touch) clicked later. The wildly talented multi-hyphenate Mayumi Yoshida returns to the YVR Screen Scene Podcast to discuss her long-awaited feature film directorial debut, Akashi, which is inspired by Mayumi's own experience of living in the space between cultures. Ten years after moving to Vancouver, struggling visual artist Kana (that's Mayumi) returns to Tokyo to attend the funeral of her beloved grandmother. Arriving in Japan, she rekindles a tentative flame with her bashful ex-boyfriend, Hiro, an aspiring thespian who vanished from her life a decade prior. As Kana digs deeper into her grandmother's past, she uncovers a family secret that prompts her to reconsider everything she thought she knew about love, duty, and belonging.Akashi – which Mayumi wrote, directed, and starred in – has its world premiere this week at the 2025 Vancouver International Film Festival. The feature began its life as a Fringe Festival play in 2016, before evolving into a Storyhive-funded short film in 2017 (the latter for which she earned a slew of awards, including the award for Best Female Director at the 2018 Vancouver Short Film Festival, and the Outstanding Writer Award at the NBCUniversal Short Film Festival). Although it's been a long road to bring Akashi to the screen in its current feature-length incarnation, Mayumi hasn't been idle in the intervening years: between directing short films – including the music video for Different Than Before, which won the SXSW Music Video Jury Award in 2023 – and working as a dialect coach and cultural consultant and advocating for diversity and inclusion in our challenging industry, Mayumi has been fighting to get this film made. This included, in 2021, taking on Telefilm, Canada's major funding provider, for their outdated language requirements that didn't take Canada's purported commitment to diversity and inclusion into consideration. In this riveting conversation with Sabrina Rani Furminger, Mayumi reflects on her journey to this moment, how Akashi changed over the years, and how Akashi changed her as an artist. Send us a textImagine transforming your energy healing practice from a passion project into a thriving six-figure business. That's exactly what Mayumi Pachikoski helps spiritual practitioners achieve through her proven methodology that combines Eastern wisdom with Western business strategy.Mayumi's journey began unexpectedly when clients receiving her facials reported profound healing experiences that went far beyond skincare. Despite initial skepticism about Reiki (despite being Japanese herself!), she eventually embraced energy healing and built a successful salon business by combining holistic skincare with energy work. What makes Mayumi's approach unique is her deep understanding of the specific challenges energy healers face in business. Many practitioners feel guilty about charging appropriately for spiritual work, struggle to articulate their value, or try to serve everyone rather than identifying their strongest niche. Through her coaching program, she addresses these obstacles with remarkable results – some clients triple their income after just three sessions. The wellness industry, including energy healing, is projected to reach a staggering $395 billion globally by 2030. This expanding market means abundant opportunities for practitioners who position themselves effectively. Contrary to the scarcity mindset many healers operate from, there are plenty of clients seeking healing services who are willing to pay for transformative results.A powerful mindset shift Mayumi teaches is reframing how healers view money: "Money is just one form of energy, and there needs to be a healthy exchange with your value." This perspective helps practitioners overcome guilt while recognizing that greater financial abundance allows them to help more people, including offering free workshops to those who can't afford their services. From website development to niche clarification to technology integration that reduces administrative overwhelm, Mayumi's comprehensive approach helps energy healers build sustainable businesses without sacrificing the quality of their work. Her success stories include practitioners who have purchased property, created location-independent lifestyles, and found genuine fulfillment in their work.Whether you're an established energy healer looking to scale your practice or just beginning your journey, this episode offers invaluable insights on combining spiritual gifts with business acumen. Born on the eastern edge of the Eurasian continent, in Hokkaido, Japan, Mayumi Nakabayashi has now spent 24 years on its western end, in the Republic of Ireland. While Mayumi's primary medium of expression is Land Art, which is art that's made through and with natural materials in the environment, she also works with voice. This means that the materials she creates with are diverse and ever-changing. From the delicate nature of working with spider webs to the dynamism of working with the human body, the contrasts and internal contradictions of Mayumi's work give her cause to think deeply about the nature of each piece she interacts with. Through Land Art, Mayumi creates geometric patterns using petals, twigs, leaves, stones, and other natural materials in her environment. While her materials inevitably come in diverse shapes and sizes, they do follow the rhythms of the sun and moon, have innate geometries in their beings, and behave collectively according to the principle of emergence. Rhythms, geometries, and patterns seem to bring harmony and connection in the natural world, and Mayumi's work is greatly inspired by these aspects of nature.
