The behind the scenes stories of two films some time in the making come together in this episode, starting with 1993's Jurassic Park. A film made at a point when Steven Spielberg's box office touch was being questioned. A movie that, had a battle for the rights gone the other way, could have been made by one of Tim Burton, Joe Dante or Richard Donner. As it was, Universal and Spielberg made the movie, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger-headlined Last Action Hero was set to go head-to-head with it. 2019's Booksmart meanwhile took ten years to get made, even though its budget was well under $10m. First time director Olivia Wilde had quite the pitch to earn the job behind the camera - but then had a battle to get audiences to the movie once she'd made it. Stories of both are told in this episode... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Lots of money was spent and expectations were sky high, but the movie turned out to be a box office dud. The film has gained a cult following in the years since. Screenwriting legend Zak Penn talks about how he got so savvy in the business of show.  We talk about how coming to LA and scouting out the city geared him up for his big move after college and his sale of “The Last Action Hero” started him on a 35 year journey of being one of Hollywood's most sought after writers. We talk about the good times with Speilberg, JJ Abrams, Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, & Dwayne Johnson and we talk about the bad times with others. Bio: Zak Penn's career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.Penn's shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director's attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn's second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Penn directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios.More recently, Penn adapted the New York Times bestselling novel READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film was released in 2018. Penn also co-wrote the script for the action comedy FREE GUY, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and was released in August of 2021.

Do you have a golden ticket? Do you want to sing about it? Danny (Austin O'Brien) has been given a magical one. It was originally from Houdini. While watching a midnight screener of his favorite action star, Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger), Danny is transported into the film. Now, he serves as a comedic sidekick in a zany fantasy world based on Hollywood tropes. Benedict (Charles Dance) gets his hands on the ticket and uses it for strange and somewhat undefined purposes. All of this spills back into the real world while Jack learns bullets and punching things hurt. There might be other lessons, but that's not what it's all about. RTS get some valuable insight from Death (Ian McKellen). He makes a mean Old Fashioned. Jeremy, Collin and La-Mar hang with Whiskers (Danny Devito) and get the end of the year party started. Let's celebrate with this underrated flick everyone has been asking for. Cheers!

Welcome to this week's episode of our Deep Dive spin-off, where we are taking a deep dive into the 1993 action-packed film, "Last Action Hero." Starring the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger, along with Austin O'Brien, this movie was way ahead of its time with its meta approach to the action genre. Join Gaius and special guest Dustin Rybka of the Sex Party podcast as they discuss all the reasons why the movie may have failed to connect when it was released in 1993 but all the reasons why it has achieved a cult following today. From the celebrity cameos, including appearances by some of Hollywood's biggest stars, to the film's multiverse inspired storyline that we're currently seeing in some action films today. We'll also explore the minds behind the film, such as director John McTiernan and writers Shane Black, Zak Penn, and Adam Leff. Despite being considered a cult classic, "Last Action Hero" is often underrated in Schwarzenegger's filmography. So grab your popcorn and settle in as we break down all the reasons why this film deserves a spot on your must-watch list. Don't miss out on this fun and witty discussion.  Other: Where To Watch Last Action Hero

It's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but it's full of 80's and 90's action movies. Many will say this movie was ahead of its time but it's more like, it could've been better. A movie so bad it sent Arnold into a mini-depression. We talk about the highs, lows and stupid of this flick.

John McTiernan back with the Die Hard franchise after the spectacular flop of Last Action Hero. Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson back together after Pulp Fiction. Die Hard with a Vengeance is definitely part of the “we are so back” canon. Shea Serrano (who owns every McTiernan movie on VHS) joins us to chat about this explosive action threequel that features a surprising amount of New York theater actors and a bunch of childhood games and riddles. Paul Scheer & Jason Mantzoukas join us once again for a clock-busting, rip-roaring time, and we're unpacking all of this movie's meta madness.  Is John McTiernan able to parody his own work?
