God always comes to Lesley through people. She is a firm believer that God created us to connect with others, and we do that by sharing our stories and finding pieces of ourselves in one another. She used to fill up with alcohol and through a divine, almost "other-wordly" experience with God she is now sober and fills up with connection; it's where God lives. Lesley is a wife, mother of three, entrepreneur, and follower of Christ. She is the owner of Traveling Pendants, a brand built on the idea that connection is the one one thing that, without fail, can give our lives meaning and purpose. This episode will follow Lesley as she found her strength for the journey, what led her to create Traveling Pendants and the beautiful gift of hope they can provide to those who receive them. The pendants will be available at the Women in Christian Leadership Lydia's Boutique and which you can find by clicking HERE. You can also visit Lesley's website which is currently getting a facelift and will be available in September. 10% of each customized Women in Christian Leadership pendant will be donated back to the organization!
In our latest episode of Then Again, Marie interviews Lesley Jones, the Collections and Archives Manager of the Northeast Georgia History Center, about séances. More specifically, Victorian seances in late 1800s London, which is the focus of Lesley's recent Master's thesis titled Home is Where the Haunt is: The Cultural History of the Domestic Séance in Victorian London. Generally, when we think of seances our mind sends us to spooky corners, filled with evil spirits. But Lesley is here to offer a different perspective, that of the Victorian age, where people sought to communicate with loved ones who had passed. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Educators Turned Unschoolers Do you like the idea of homeschooling but have a few doubts? Not sure if you are up to the task? Feeling under-qualified? Or maybe you are hoping that a progressive education will equate to the same thing. Now if only you can find the right school...... My episode guest, has many years of experience working in progressive education. Lesley Jones-Sessler is an educator and a former school administrator now turned unschooler. You can find her on her blog, Watch Monkey Mama to learn more about her family's unschooling journey. When it came time for Lesley to begin looking for a school for her son, she was saddened by the lack of schools that fit the bill for progressive education in the state of Indiana. After a visit with their local public school, Lesley was also dismayed by the lack of diversity in the staff of the local school system. And then, Covid hit. Lesley decided that homeschool was now the most viable option. Little did she know she would find herself down the beginning of a rabbit hole of life learning. After hours researching various homeschooling methods and philosophies, Lesley stumbled across the match for her family: the self directed learning community. In This Episode In This Episode Lesley and I explore the lines of school, homeschool and unschool. We break down: Vocabulary terms in education- What is the difference between traditional vs progressive schooling? We discuss the Traditional viewpoint of - Authority, Lack of choice, Teaching to the test and drill and kill. Versus Progressive Education- Multi-age teaching, flexibility, hands on and child directed. Child Led Learning vs Self Directed Learning within Progressive Schools- Are they one- in- the same or is there a difference? Do both happen in progressive education? Lesley shares examples of what learnings look like in their home The power of "letting go" in unschooling Is it harder for educators to let go and unschool? We discuss her Deschooling process and how she shuts down negative self talk- ( you know that little voice of doubt and fear that we can all experience, coming from within and the outside? ) The two types of naysayers- and why understanding those types helps us to choose our response or reactions (or lack of) to them Having an accountability partner and advocate- why her sister is the biggest gift to their unschooling experience Lesley's advice to educators that are considering homeschooling Resources Reach out to Lesley through her blog- Watch Monkey Mama or on Instagram- @watchmonkeymama How To Be An Awesome Homeschooler Summit- https://howtobeanawesomehomeschooler.com/ Patreon Community- Become a patron~ https://www.patreon.com/honeyimhomeschoolingthekids (Don't forget that starting this May, you can join the community for monthly live meet-ups through Zoom) Other episodes mentioned- Building Literacy At Home See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When you've spent your life in the school system, as a student, then as a parent and educator, making the shift to self-directed learning can be challenging. Whether the move is how you educate your kids, or your students, it requires a lot of unlearning and a radical shift in perspective.Your experience of school, as a student, parent and teacher, might be the driver behind your change in approach. Seeing the impact that schooling had on you, your own kids, or on the children you teach might be WHY you want to try something different. To focus on what works best for the child, rather than the system. But that doesn't mean it comes easy. Years of conditioning and training need to be overcome. And they CAN be overcome. You became an educator because you want to inspire children to be the best they can, and to show them a path to joyful learning. You want the same for your own children. THAT is entirely possible when you embrace Self Directed learning, and become a facilitator and mentor for children's learning, rather than an authority figure passing on knowledge.Former public school principal, Lesley Jones Sessler has over 30 years of experience in the K-12 system as an assistant superintendent, teacher, assistant principal, and nearly every role in between. Lesley currently runs her blog, WatchMonkeyMama, as a mom, educator, and homeschooler. She is joining Galileo co-founder Kelly Davis to share what her journey has taught her about learning, education and parentingIn this discussion, Lesley will shareHer experiences as a principalHow to trust what your child is interested in and to let goHow children become readers without an expected reading age andHow important it can be for parents to deschool, in order to trust the SDE processLet's keep the inspiring discussion going! After reaching the age of 18, 20 percent of children who were in foster care will become instantly homeless. Less than 3 percent of children who have aged out of foster care have a chance to earn a college degree. My guest today is fighting to change that. On this week’s episode of Soapbox Diaries, our guest is Lesley Jones Sessler, a nationally recognized and award winning educator and regional specialist with Foster Success. This is the third episode in our Women’s History Month series. We discussed her fight for children on the margins.

Episode Notes Hold onto your hat (or your pipe-weed and elf-cloak) as we go on a deep dive into J. R. R. Tolkien and his works. The mythos and worlds Tolkien created have been celebrated in their own right, have influenced numerous other authors, and inspired some of the most popular fantasy/action films ever produced – but what’s really cool is the essay he wrote on Beowulf that redefined the way it’s taught and understood! In this episode Ken and Glen – in the first of who knows how many as they’re kind of obsessed with Tolkien – discuss Tolkien’s life, influences, WWI service, work as a linguist, love of trees, surprise at fame, love of beer and pipe smoking, being bitten by a baboon spider at age two…well, the list just goes on.Fun note! The lovely cross stitch art on our episode cover was made by the History Center's own Lesley Jones! The center tree is the White Tree of Gondor, a symbol of the High Kings of Middle-Earth. It reads:Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind themThanks for listening! Dr. Holmans is head of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Unit at the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics at Cardiff University, and has over 25 years' experience in the statistical analysis of complex genetic traits, both in data analysis and developing novel genetic methodology. He has led the statistical analysis of large multicentre collaborations in genome-wide linkage of schizophrenia, and association in Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia. Of particular relevance to HD and other repeat disorders, he led the pathway analysis of the two GeM genetic modifiers GWAS (2015, 2019) and also the genetic analysis of HD progression (Hensman-Moss et al. 2017b), implicating DNA repair pathways as modifiers both of age at onset and progression in HD. He has also led the pathway analyses of HD RNA-seq expression data in myeloid cells (Miller et al. 2016) and whole blood (Hensman-Moss et al. 2017a), implicating immune pathways as relevant to HD pathogenesis and uncovering shared susceptibility pathways with other neurodegenerative disorders. Currently, he is interested in discovering genetic modifiers associated with other phenotypes (particularly psychiatric) in HD. Dr. Holmans is married to Lesley Jones and they live in Cardiff with three cats He is a keen bridge player, fond of watching cricket and also a die-hard St Louis Cardinals fan.
