Welcome to another episode of The Round Table! This week, Daniella, Kassandra and Kassandra sit down with Kelly Davis, the Vice President of Peer and Youth Advocacy at Mental Health America. In her role, Kelly focuses on expanding peer support mental health programs and championing policies driven by lived experiences. In our conversation, Kelly sheds light on how peer support functions and emphasizes the critical need to break down barriers that limit access to mental health assistance. While acknowledging the challenges that remain in addressing youth mental health, we also highlight the range of treatment options available through schools and how they can serve as a foundation for progress. Our discussion takes a deep dive into the multifaceted nature of mental health. We explore generational stigmas, the influence of social media and online mental health spaces, and the persistent disparities in mental health support for men and women. Additionally, we examine the unique challenges faced by immigrants and first-generation children, offering insight into how cultural backgrounds shape their relationship with mental health. Kelly shares practical ways for youth to engage in mental health advocacy through local and national organizations, highlighting how passionate young people are driving much of today's progress. We close by reflecting on our hopes for the future: greater accessibility to support, more open conversations breaking mental health taboos, and leaders prioritizing this critical issue. Thank you for listening!

Readers, we have celebrated birthday milestones here on the podcast before, and today Anne is talking with a guest who designed the ultimate book party for her recent 50th birthday. Kelly Davis lives in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where she works for her alma mater and enjoys caring for her garden and listening to audiobooks. For Kelly's recent 50th birthday, she planned a big celebration at her local beignet company, and in lieu of other presents, she asked guests to bring a book that they loved. Kelly's goal was collecting 50 books for 50 years, and her party was a great success. But the fun didn't stop there. In a project that would speak to many nerdy reader hearts, Kelly created a master document to analyze the books she received, including lots of charts and graphs. Today, Kelly is here to get Anne's help in creating a plan and choosing which of these titles to reach for next. Find the list of titles mentioned today and let us know which titles you'd recommend for Kelly at our show notes page, whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/442. Learn more about your ad choices. Kelly Davis joins Yo to discuss THESIS, an independent podcast, created by a group of international students who are currently in a Masters Program in Higher Education at the University of Oslo in Norway (the podcast is not affiliated with the University of Oslo). The theme for their first season, which just recently ended, was to discuss geo politics and the use of higher education as a form of soft power in autocratic regimes. Their second season which began June 7 and will focus on first generation students and higher education on a global level. Kelly is also a special guest because she was in Girl Scout Troup 2136 which Yo led. During the episode Kelly and Yo explored higher education trends and how it's changing. Here are the 3 Takeaways: 1. We can expect a drop in enrollment in the years to come due to a declining birthrate. 2. The reasons for not going to college cannot be easily defined and we can question if the motivation and role of higher education leads to more social mobility. 3. Our views on higher education are U.S. centric and outside the U.S. it's a different story - if we think higher education has no value we should look outside the U.S. We hope you'll enjoy this inspiring episode! For the longest time, education has always been inside the four corners of a classroom. But as we continue to evolve and uncertainties happen, people have learned to be creative, flexible, and adapt. If there's a remote-first setup in the workplace, there are forward-thinking schools for self-directed learners. In this episode, I'll be chatting with Kelly Davis, she is the co-founder and Chief Education Officer of Galileo, a new and innovative self-directed online school for world schooling and unschooling families. The newly re-launched Galileo Edupreneurs Academy is back in full swing! In this episode, Galileo's Kelly Davis chatted to Academy leader, Mary-Ellen Fimbel, about what's going on in the Academy as well as her advice for those embarking on a self-directed education journey. The Edupreneur Academy is a space for parents, educators, and anyone interested in learning experiences to understand how to support learners in discovering and following their interests and passions. The Edupreneur Academy offers a number of different programs that are all related to upskilling in the field of education and self-directed learning. Mary-Ellen has been involved in the self-directed learning and unschooling space for several years, as both a student and a teacher. She noticed that the most common hurdles experienced by families starting on this journey is that they don't have a realistic idea of what to expect from the self-directed learning experience.Mary-Ellen says: “Many parents who are new to self-directed learning think that they can work on deschooling or unschooling for a little bit after leaving school and then all of a sudden their kid will be interested in science and everything takes off and is perfect.” However, this couldn't be further from the truth. Mary-Ellen wanted to design an applied self-directed learning course that helped parents and educators to understand what it takes to go through a self-directed learning process so that they can better support their children. “For kids who've been in school for a long time, there's a lot of anxiety that comes with being able to choose whatever you want to learn about. One thing that we talk a lot about in the course is how we can support kids in this, but also how we can be empathetic to the fact that when you can choose literally anything, sometimes you do need a little bit of direction to help spark ideas and interests.”This episode unpacks why it's important for parents and educators to have this perspective for transitioning into self-directed learning environments, as well as some of Mary-Ellen's top tips. Imagine a gender-equal world.A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. Unfortunately, even in the education space, we still have a long way to go in terms of gender equality. In celebration of International Women's Day, we celebrate Galileo's resident female entrepreneur powerhouse, Kelly Davis. Kelly is the co-founder as well as the Director of Education for Galileo. Her teaching experience began during an off-the-grid experience in a remote village in Fiji in a 3 walled-schoolhouse and it was this adventure that compelled her to continue teaching. During a study abroad experience in Australia that enabled her to travel to Fiji, a series of incredible opportunities to teach in small villages and various countries throughout Asia have fed her desire to make the most of an opportunity to travel and teach.Kelly will be hosted by Heidi Conway, the co-founder of Changemaker Teens Global. The organization works with mothers and alternative learning educators to be the catalyst for positive change by holding the space for young people, on their learning journey.Changemaker Teens offers young people to follow ‘The Changemaker Way' programme, which is an independent or facilitated coaching pathway for young people to discover, create and live their purpose or passionHeidi is a qualified Life Coach, trainer, speaker, best-selling author, and edupreneur. At least five people were killed and at least 48 more were injured when an SUV plowed into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The police chief said the suspect is facing five counts of intentional homicide with more charges possible. Kelly Davis was at the parade where two of his children were marching. One of his kids was just barely missed by the SUV as it barreled through the crowd. He joins AC360 to describe the horrific scene and gives an update on how his children are doing. Plus, the January 6 committee issued new subpoenas for five Trump allies, including Roger Stone and Alex Jones. Carrie Cordero is a CNN Legal Analyst and a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security. She tells AC360 it's “unlikely” they'll be persuaded to cooperate but she thinks the committee is “doing everything” within its power to try and get that cooperation.
