In this episode of Hangar Flying with Smokehouse Pilots, host Gabe Muller interviews Sam Sessler, creator of the Hangar app. Sam shares his aviation background and the inspiration behind Hangar, a social platform for pilots inspired by the running app Strava. Launched in March 2024, Hangar combines flight tracking, social sharing, and safety features, gaining around 4,500 users. Sam discusses the challenges of developing the app without prior coding experience, emphasizing the importance of user experience and onboarding. He outlines future goals, including widespread adoption among general aviation pilots and continued feature improvements. The app has partnered with Log10 for logbook integration. Sam reflects on his entrepreneurial journey and the app's potential impact on the aviation community, particularly in connecting new pilots. The episode provides insights into the fusion of aviation and technology, showcasing innovative ways for pilots to connect and share experiences. Key Takeaways: The Hangar app combines flight tracking, social sharing, and safety features for pilots. Sam developed the app without prior coding experience, learning as he went. The app has gained approximately 4,500 users since launching in March 2024. Hangar has partnered with Log10 for logbook integration. User experience and onboarding have been crucial challenges in developing the app. Sound Bites: "It's kind of like a Life 360 for pilots or like a Find My iPhone for pilots." - Sam Sessler "I would like to see most GA pilots in the nation on it, at least the ones... I know my grandpa would never use it." - Sam "If I were to show myself the app back when I was working in a totally different industry, doing nothing like I'm doing right now, didn't know how to build an app... I would be blown away." - Sam "The user experience of how people come onto the app... it's almost like a, there's a science to it. And if you don't have it right, people are instantly going to stop using your app." - Sam "I think it's really neat because again, at the end of the day, there's a lot, as you know, of pilot communities and forums and things out there where it's just flooded with stuff that it's kind of hard to cut through the noise." - Gabe Muller Important Information: Website: FlyHanger.com Instagram: @FlyHangerApp Sam's personal Instagram: @SuperCubSam The app is available in app stores Hangar offers a free version and a $5/month pro subscription https://www.smokehousepilots.com/

In many respects, Franzi Sessler and Tony Gui, are typical DMBAs. They traveled from far and wide to get to San Francisco to join a program and community that they hoped would help them redesign their lives. Typical right? But, like ALL DMBAs, Franzi's and Tony's stories are so much more than typical! In this episode -- newly minted as "Everything is a Prototype: The DMBA Podcast" (thank you for the suggestion Anita Chordia!) -- Franzi and Tony talk about their lives before the DMBA and just how much their experiences in the program changed them...and, of course, how they built a thriving business, called Kreatives, by prototyping everything along the way. Enjoy!

"What you made a choice on does not determine where your life is going to go. It might have an impact on it but you can choose. -Dylan Sessler We've all been prisoners to our own darkness at some point in our lives. Maybe it was abuse, maybe it was addiction, maybe it was trauma—whatever your worst nightmare might be, there's a way out! It doesn't matter how far back your darkest moments are—you can use them as an opportunity for growth. If you're stuck in a rut, it's not just because you don't have enough energy or motivation—it's because you haven't figured out how to harness the power of your past experiences yet. Join me as I sit with mental health coach, author, social media influencer, and veteran, Dylan Sessler. You may find relatable moments as Dylan and I talk about what living in darkness feels like and how we can defy the darkness so that we can live life the way it should be lived. We also discuss what empathy involves, how ego affects our ability to reason, how we can change our narrative, why we should start valuing ourselves, and how we can protect the sanctity of our relationships. He is a veteran of the US Army, as well as an author, mental health advocate, speaker, and survivor. He has survived various adverse life events in his life and is now trying to help people overcome their own adversity. Dylan wrote a book entitled "Defy the Darkness: A Story of Suicide, Mental Health, and Overcoming Your Hardest Battles," which mainly tackles the things he had to go through in life and how he was able to survive them. Aside from a book, he also has a podcast and a TikTok account. At such a young age, Dylan had a traumatic event with his dad, who passed away by suicide. That event left him filled with guilt and regret. Growing up, he experienced physical and emotional trauma at the hands of his mother's boyfriend. He suffered silently, bearing all the pain on his own. When his mother found out about how he got hit, they immediately left the house. Aside from that, he also suffered from bullying in school. Episode 217 of the Beyond Adversity Podcast is for those people who are in need of help due to their adversities in life. This could inspire and help them overcome their challenges in life. All the traumatic events that happened in Dylan's life led to his choice to enter the military. He had developed principles which contributed to the choices he made in life. Dylan experienced more challenges in life as he got older. He eventually realized that he was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Little by little, he tried his best to overcome the challenges in his life. In this episode, Dylan discusses the trauma, challenges, and choices he made in his life and how he was able to change his life for the better. He also talks about some important points that he included in his book. When it came time for Lesley to begin looking for a school for her son, she was saddened by the lack of schools that fit the bill for progressive education in the state of Indiana. After a visit with their local public school, Lesley was also dismayed by the lack of diversity in the staff of the local school system. And then, Covid hit. Lesley decided that homeschool was now the most viable option. Little did she know she would find herself down the beginning of a rabbit hole of life learning. After hours researching various homeschooling methods and philosophies, Lesley stumbled across the match for her family: the self directed learning community. In This Episode In This Episode Lesley and I explore the lines of school, homeschool and unschool. We break down: Vocabulary terms in education- What is the difference between traditional vs progressive schooling? We discuss the Traditional viewpoint of - Authority, Lack of choice, Teaching to the test and drill and kill. Versus Progressive Education- Multi-age teaching, flexibility, hands on and child directed. Child Led Learning vs Self Directed Learning within Progressive Schools- Are they one- in- the same or is there a difference? Do both happen in progressive education? Lesley shares examples of what learnings look like in their home The power of "letting go" in unschooling Is it harder for educators to let go and unschool? We discuss her Deschooling process and how she shuts down negative self talk- ( you know that little voice of doubt and fear that we can all experience, coming from within and the outside? ) The two types of naysayers- and why understanding those types helps us to choose our response or reactions (or lack of) to them Having an accountability partner and advocate- why her sister is the biggest gift to their unschooling experience Lesley's advice to educators that are considering homeschooling Resources Reach out to Lesley through her blog- Watch Monkey Mama or on Instagram- @watchmonkeymama How To Be An Awesome Homeschooler Summit- https://howtobeanawesomehomeschooler.com/ Patreon Community- Become a patron~ https://www.patreon.com/honeyimhomeschoolingthekids (Don't forget that starting this May, you can join the community for monthly live meet-ups through Zoom) Other episodes mentioned- Building Literacy At Home See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dylan is an outspoken advocate on Tik Tok for bettering mental health, opening the conversation about suicide, and informing people about the causes and effects of trauma. As a mental health coach, Dylan has developed his work to be the safety net for the over-burdened and controversial mental health system that can leave people feeling isolated, misunderstood, and even drugged. Dylan is attempting to bridge the gap between lived experience and professional mental health support to keep people from falling through the cracks. His diverse experience from losing his father to suicide at 6 years old, the child abuse and bullying that followed, his wartime experience in Afghanistan, and the life-changing injuries that followed brought him to the brink of taking his own life at 25. Since that day in March 2015, Dylan has learned to overcome suicide ideation and PTSD in his own way, and more importantly, he has learned how to enjoy life even through the ever-present adversity that life delivers. https://dylansessler.com/home https://youtu.be/bdyHowtCRS4 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/support
