On this Sixth Sunday of Easter, as we celebrate Mother's Day and Jesus's abiding love for us, the Rev. Carol Duncan leads us on a visualization into the “elemental love of parents for children and of God for us”. Today's readings are: 1 John 5:1-6 Psalm 98 John 15:9-17 Readings may be found on LectionaryPage.net for the Sixth Sunday of Easter, Year B. Transcript: [Introductory music] [The Rev. Carol Duncan] Please pray with me. Holy One, here we are to bask in the glow of your mothering love you have given us life. Open our ears and our hearts to your invitation to abide as your children in the endless outpouring of your love Amen. Please be seated. So nice to see so many people here; I just love it! Mother's Day gives us space to talk about love. Mothers may feel more freedom to talk about love than is generally considered polite in european heritage culture. Mother's Day is such a simple holiday. We sometimes diminish it to a greeting card, but all of us entered life through being born of our mothers. Our mothers bore us. Our God sustains our lives and gives us meaning and purpose. I want to celebrate the elemental love of parents for children and of God for us. This morning I am inviting us to revel in Jesus's love poured out in today's Gospel. Open your imagination to the invitation to join Jesus's disciples at their last gathering. The space and time of this morning is sacred and holy. Allow your mind's heart to enter the presence of Jesus the Eternal One. Take a deep breath and let it out. Let your shoulders fall. Close your eyes if that helps you imagine. Jesus's true words come to us in scripture so that with the company of saints we, in our time, and our children and our children's children can find the true vision faithfully over the years. Discover yourself now in your mind's heart. Discover yourself in a room whose thick walls block out any outside sound. We are seated at a table. It is night. Feel your clean, bare feet that earlier this evening Jesus has knelt down before you to wash. Feel your stomach satisfied from a simple meal with unleavened bread and several cups of wine. Hear the gentle interweaving of conversational threads. Mention of Jesus works of healing, mourning the rejection of him by some, a bit about the frantic Passover preparation that got us here, amazement at the throngs of worshipers in Jerusalem. Feel as well a backwash of discomfort from the sudden departure of Judas which reminded us how closely the authorities are tracking our movements. They want to accuse us of sedition, or worse. Lean in now, close up Judas's place. Lean in a little closer to hear Jesus's soft clear voice. His breath sweetly caresses your cheek as he speaks. The warmth of bodies surrounds you. Listen: “As my Father loves me, so I love you.” I love you. My love is your dwelling, your home. To know my love, to inhabit this home, practice loving as I love. As my Abba loves me. when you live in this love you will experience my joy, my complete joy, as I have felt with you. Breathe in my abiding love. Take in my joy. My simple, single commandment is that you love one another as I have loved you. I have loved you with my life. Being with you, showing you what it means to love the people we have encountered. You have been with me. You have served the crowds that we met. You are no longer servants, you are my dear ones, my friends. I chose you because I know that you will carry out this work of love. The work we've done and the words you've heard from me will endure. My Father's purpose and desire that generations will experience his love are planted and will bear fruit through you. I am speaking openly about how much I love you, so that you can hear it clearly. Love one another. Find ways to show your love. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. Breathe in, know I love you. Breathe out, know I love you. We are the ones Jesus has chosen. Ours is the joy of the Eucharistic feast whether they're taken physically or spiritually. We move now into the practice of love in the Eucharist. Keep breathing, keep loving, enjoy Mother's Day. Amen. Julie Hale Maschhoff is a former first grade teacher and college professor.  She is the author of “Golden Fruit: Living the Fruit of The Spirit through the Best Times of Your Life” and “But Now I See: Finding God's Plan for Your Life.”  Her journey is remarkable.  She's one of my heroes and a true inspiration. Julie has Usher's Syndrome.  Usher's Syndrome is a rare recessive genetic disease that causes severe hearing and visual impairment.  This diagnosis didn't stop Julie.  After her diagnosis she went on to achieve her doctorate degree. Finding Peace Julie shared how she's found peace by finding God's purpose for her.   After retiring, she thought about what she could do, and writing was the answer.  She wrote her first book and submitted it to a publisher, and they accepted it right away.  At that point she knew that she was on the right path, following God's will for her and she found a sense of peace. In this episode Julie shares inspiring insight on how we can find our purpose and follow God's plan for our lives, as entrepreneurs and personally, and find peace. “God sends people and situations we can learn from.” – Julie Maschhoff Humor Julie believes strongly that we have to laugh at ourselves.  Life is too sad and heavy to not laugh. Starting a Business If you want to start a business, you have to try it.   If it doesn't work out, or if you don't feel at peace, then you might not be on the right path.   Pivot.  Change directions.  Sit with prayer and see what door God opens for you.   Leave the door open.   Don't close it, put yourself out there and see what other opportunities God puts in our path. When you try something and it doesn't work or you don't have peace with it, that's a sign that it isn't meant to be.   But you have to try things.   If God wants you to do something, you will find peace when doing it. Fruits of the Spirit If you want peace, follow the fruits of the Spirit.  Peace and joy are things we are missing in our society today.   Julie wrote her first book because she was depressed and wanted to find joy. The Fruits of The Spirit Joy Peace Patience Kindness Goodness Faithfulness Gentleness Self-Control We often look for peace in the wrong places.  If we don't put in effort or take action, we don't find peace. When we are depressed, find someone you can help.  Get out of your own skin and find a way of living with the people around you by serving them. The more we display these traits in our lives the more blessings we will receive in our lives.  If people are kind and civil and exhibit human decency life can be so rewarding. Stop, Look and Listen As humans we think we have all the answers but whatever the situation, we have to stop, pray about it.  We have to stop!  Stop and ponder.  Live with patience. After stopping, it's time to look around.  Look around and see what's there, what opportunities is God putting in our path?  What doors is he closing?  What doors is he opening? We also need to listen, something we don't do for each other enough.   Instead of listening we start thinking about what we are going to say next.  Instead, stop doing and wondering and listen. God often uses other people to speak to us for Him.   If we aren't taking time to listen and instead jumping in to answer for someone or moving on to the next topic, we will miss an opportunity to hear God's plan for us. God sends people and situations we can learn from.  Thus, we need to stop, look and listen. The Angels Among Us There are angles among us.   God uses angels to communicate his plan for us.  If you pay attention to the world around you, to the people around you, and stop to pay attention, you'll see them.  You'll hear them. Be Brave Each one of us must be brave enough to advocate for herself and never be afraid to follow her dreams.   We have to encourage our girls to be strong and brave.  Girls need to realize that they can take care of themselves and know that no partner is going to complete them, that they have to complete themselves.  It's important to teach girls to advocate for themselves.  Girls need to like themselves first. Be brave, advocate for yourself and follow your dreams! Learn more and connect with Julie Website:  www.jjhale50.com Email: jamaschhoff@gmail.com Learn more about your host, Robyn Graham, click HERE. me I immediately shared his grand comparison of me and Chaucer, with the sharp bubble-burster of my home, my wife, who simply said, “Hmmm, yes, Chaucer. He was crude as well.” Typical. What does she know anyway?Unfortunately we have upwardly diminished the power of the Bible in making it palace-worthy rather than pavement-worthy, making it a book for the studious instead of a book for the sidewalk. The common people heard Jesus gladly and I can guarantee you, He wasn’t received in the majestic language of the King James Version. The common people. They heard Him. They received Him. Gladly! I am not talking about dumbing down here either, but rather about tooling up with the words of the day.We need to regain some street-credibility in the delivery of the Scriptures. Before that happens, however, we need to let loose the so long now muzzled, powerful jaws of the lion and allow it to roar once more. I wonder if the hidden and diluted Word of God which we are peddling from our pulpits now, which over the years we have also so tightly dressed up like a gay, and mincing, little white, and pink,padded-poodle-ette, is quite frankly too embarrassed to be taken outdoors? It is embarrassing, isn't it? For our misuse of the Bible in this way, and that is what the cultural diluting of the Word of God is, a gross misuse of the Bible, has robbed it of its awesome power and thoroughly embarrassed it. God help us, please! For this Word in its undiluted form is the very life-giving juice dripped from the leaves of the squeezed out tree of life! So, yes indeed, we need to let the juice loose even if it does cause so many letters to be written by ‘Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells, and Karens!’ I say again, Let the juice loose! However, before we can let this juice loose once more, I wonder if we need to let loose most of the Christians who read the juicy book and especially those frightened little folk who we have sent to seminary-dentistry, where they have had their teeth removed and the rough and ready garments of the prophet replaced by smart and casual, Hawaiian-shirt, cool respectability. Lord God! (and that’s a calling prayer) Lord God! I hate respectability, and I hate it with a vengeance! You see, I reckon that nice speaking, polite little Christians, have done more damage to the Kingdom of God than the devil could ever do.I have two things to leave with you tonight than:First an equation, and frankly, maybe it’s just me, but I do find that in my life, that the more righteous I experientially and practically become, the less outwardly, pretentiously respectable I both appear and act. How’s your life adding then up in terms of middle-class, middle-England type respectability tonight? Are you above all things, nice? Or, are you above all things, holy?Secondly, note that when a clawed, and sharp-beaked, sharp-eyed hawk even gently glides past the settled nests of the starling colonies, the little birds rise up and attack it. Prophet. Jesus street preacher. Watch out for the darling, little starlings for they are not as sweet as you might think, and I tell you, they do not want their nice little nest much ruffled, especially if their religion gets in a state. If you are not nice, like them, then they will peck you to death.Even so, and, never the less, do remember to drink the Bible in its undiluted form, yes remember to simply let the juice loose and always preacher, I mean always, serve the Word like sushi. Raw!Listen:- As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. BuSupport the show (http://www.victorrobert.tv)

In the intermediate section this month, we looked at strong (or extreme) adjectives. fantastic, wonderful, amazing, enormous, awesome, starving, tiny are strong adjectives. Listen to some strong adjectives and try to say the base, or normal, adjective before I do. Entonces, primero escucha el adjetivo extremo, y luego tú dices el adjetivo base del mismo antes que lo digo yo. For example “This video game is absolutely fantastic." We can only use very with a base adjective. For example “This chicken tastes very good.” It’s not correct to say: X"Very fantastic"X or X"absolutely good"X. No se dice. However, we can use really with base and strong adjectives. For example “You look really tired.” Or “That film was really awful.” Listen and repeat The weather was freezing. Her brother is absolutely enormous Your bedroom is absolutely filthy The film was terrible La Mansion del Ingles has become a very big website. It-s huge. The bar was really crowded He was absolutely furious. Your car is really tiny Today’s absolutely boiling outside Also in the intermediate section, we looked at some common collocations. Let’s see what you remember. OK, action. Is it do action, ‘make’ action or ‘take’ action? – take action. We need to take action immediately. We must do something now. When are you going to take action? Is it ‘do’, ‘take’ or ‘make’ advantage of someone or something? – that’s right, take advantage. You should take advantage of these podcasts to improve your English aprovechar algo. You’re taking advantage of the situation. Now, do you ‘do’, ‘make’ or ‘take’ arrangements? – You make arrangements. I can’t see you tonight. I’ve made arrangements. Have you made arrangements for next weekend? The next expression was to make an attempt. To make an attempt means to try to do something. An attempt es un intento.I made an attempt at conversation - intenté entablar conversación. When you apply to do something, you can say that you make an application. I made an application for a job in Dublin. To make amends means reparar el daño - to make amends to somebody – I think in Spanish it’s desagraviar a algn - we must make amends for having scratched his car - debemos compensar por haberle rayado el coche What’s Dar luz in English? Is it ‘make’ a baby, ‘do’ a baby, or ‘have’ a baby? – It’s have a baby. My sister’s having a baby in the spring. My wife just had her first child. Now, is it ‘make’ the bed, or ‘do’ the bed? – Make the bed. Remember, most of the things in the house we do except the bed. We do the shopping, we do the cooking, we do the cleaning, we do the ironing, the dishes etc. but we make the bed. To make a bid for something is pujar en subasta. The word bid – B-I-D is a verb and a noun. To bid for something or to make a bid for something. They bid twenty pounds for a painting - ofrecieron veinte libras por un cuadro. ¿Como se dice hacer negocios en inglés? – Is it ‘make’ or ‘do’? It’s do. We do business and we make money. And, speaking of doing business, this month we looked at some expressions you could use for giving presentations in English. When you start your presentation, the first thing you should say is “hello” and introduce yourself. For example: “Good morning everyone.” Repeat: “Good morning everyone.” Listen: “Let me introduce myself. My name’s Craig.” Repeat: “Let me introduce myself. My name’s Craig” To speak about something the audience may already know, say:  “As you all know…” or “I’m sure you are aware that…” Listen: “As you all know sales have dropped by 13%.” or “I’m sure you are aware that we need a new advertising campaign.” Repeat: “As you all know…….” “I’m sure you are aware that…….” When you show something visual say something like “Could I draw your attention to this graph.” Or “If you look at this diagram, …” or “Looking at this year’s profits, we can see here that…” Repeat: “Could I draw your attention to this graph.”  “If you look at this diagram, …”  “Looking at this year’s profits, we can see here that…” Your audience may want to ask you questions. Make them feel comfortable, by saying: “If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.” Repeat: “If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.”  Now, perhaps you want the questions to be at the end of your presentation. Maybe you don’t want to be interrupted and distracted by questions during your presentation. So, you could say: “I’ll be happy to answer any questions at the end of my presentation. Repeat: “I’ll be happy to answer any questions at the end of my presentation.” When you finish your presentation, don’t forget to thank your audience. Say “Thank you very much. Any questions?” or “Well, that’s all I have to say. Thank you very much for your attention.” Moving on to the advanced section, we practised some animal idioms. We said that if a person is as slippery as a snake, then he, or she, should not be trusted. Slippery means resbaladizo, like a slippery floor, but for a person, it means escurridizo; que no es de fiar. A slippery person is untrustworthy. You cannot trust this person. He, or she, is slippery. As slippery as a snake. Repeat: As slippery as a snake. If you hear the expression it was the straw that broke the camel’s back, it means it was the final thing that pushed someone or something over the edge. Over the edge means sobre el límite or por encima del límite  The straw that broke the camel's back is also the last thing you are willing to accept  For example: "You broke a lot of rules, but stealing money from us was the straw that broke the camel's back." You can also say the last straw or the final straw. If you lead a dog's life, you have a terrible life, an unhappy existence. Her boss leads her a dogs life. And, if you make a monkey out of someone, you make a fool of them. Nobody makes a monkey out of me. If you hear the expression a leopard never changes its spots, it means that people never change. He was a liar at school, and he’s a liar now. A leopard never changes its spots. If you let the cat out of the bag, you tell something that was supposed to be a secret. Sandra and Bob are getting married but don’t let the cat out of the bag. They don’t want anyone to know yet. If you take the lion's share of something, you take or do the biggest bit. My husband does the lion’s share of the housework. I don’t do very much. To be foxed means to be confused. I don’t know why the manager sacked her. I’m completely foxed by it. Donkey work is hard or boring work. Why do I have to do all the donkey work while you get to do the interesting stuff? And finally, a lone wolf is a person who prefers to go without the company or assistance of others. Don’t expect him to work in a team, he’s a lone wolf. He works by himself.
