Why intention Is More Effective Than Traditional Goal Setting with Paul Davis

Doug interviews Paul Davis, a business growth consultant and author of "Genius Unlocked." Paul shares his methodology for finding life purpose, challenging popular concepts like ‘start with why' and passion based approaches. He explains his four-element framework and advocates using intentions instead of goals and shares stories about achieving targets through rewards like biplane wing walks. The conversation covers why conventional advice about purpose may be flawed and how to align with your true mission in life. KEY TAKEAWAYS • Use intentions instead of goals, intentions create stronger commitment and act as a contract with yourself and the universe beyond the usual goal setting. • Your true purpose is set from birth and never changes, though it develops and evolves throughout your lifetime. • Passions are temporary and the word means to suffer. Focus on what provides lasting fulfilment through your core drivers. • Universe operates a three-stage warning system: Gentle nudges (feathers), then setbacks (bricks), finally major disruptions (trucks) guide you toward your purpose. • Four elements define your genius, inspiration (divine guidance), quest (life mission), drivers (fulfilment sources), and role (natural archetype) work together. • Avoid planning the "how" and instead set clear intentions but let inspiration and opportunities guide your path rather than forcing detailed plans. • People make decisions based on personal benefit, not company purpose or brand mission statements which is why the ‘start with why' philosophy is so flawed. • Track both current and completed intentions. Use systems like Trello to monitor progress and maintain motivation through visible achievement records. BEST MOMENTS "Every single human being will only do something when they perceive that there's more benefits than drawbacks to themselves." "Your quest is not enjoyable. Believe me, your quest is not enjoyable, but that's your mission to achieve." "The feather are those gentle nudges that you get from the unconscious and everybody gets them... That's your unconscious.” ABOUT THE GUEST Paul Davis, a renowned business growth consultant and intuitive personal advisor helping entrepreneurs build a better business, a better life and a better world. https://davisbusinessconsultants.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/pauldavisdublin/ https://davisbusinessconsultants.com/book-shop/ VALUABLE RESOURCES Website: http://dougbennett.co.uk/ Email: doug@dougbennett.co.uk LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/financialdoug/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/FinancialDoug Facebook Wealth Tribe: https://join.dougbennett.co.uk/ Download Your "Ten-Step Guide To Financial Freedom" Here: https://bit.ly/Struggle-Success BOOKS: Goals Do Come True is now live and available to buy on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3phcy6Z Think Simple, Win Big is now live and available to buy on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Think-Simple-Win-Big-Business/ Enjoy, and come back for the latest podcast each Wednesday. He discussed the challenges posed by bureaucratic hurdles and judicial inefficiencies in India, while also noting the hardworking population and positive demographic trends that could drive consumer demand. Ryan cautioned that excessive debt could impede economic progress, drawing parallels to past crises. In this deep and soulful journey through Parshat Chukas, Rabbi Yisroel Bernath unpacks one of the most perplexing and powerful moments in the Torah: the copper snake on a pole. Why did G-d command Moses to use the very symbol of suffering, the snake, as a healing instrument? What does it mean that people had to look up at the snake to be cured?Through timeless Jewish wisdom, vulnerable personal insight, and psychological depth, Rabbi Bernath explores the mystery of pain, the challenge of resilience, and the spiritual art of transforming darkness into light. You'll walk away with a new perspective on your own struggles and perhaps, a new path to healing.Key Takeaways:Transformation, Not Avoidance: True healing doesn't come from avoiding our pain, but from facing it with courage and elevating it with meaning. The Snake Above vs. the Snake Below: The same experience can be seen from a higher or lower perspective. One brings despair; the other, depth. The Poison Is the Cure: Just like antivenom is made from venom, your healing may emerge from the very thing that once hurt you.Don't Run, Look Up: When we stop running from the “snakes” in our lives and look upward—to G-d, to our higher selves—we discover the blessing buried in the bite.Every Crisis Holds a Blessing: Like Jacob wrestling the angel, we can say to our struggle: “I will not let you go until you bless me.” That's Jewish resilience. You Are Sacred Even in Pain: Sometimes the deepest truth is not an answer to your question, but the awareness that your soul is Divine, loved, and never alone.#healing #Judaism #Jewish #coppersnake #healingthroughpain #TorahPortion #TorahLessons #Torah #torahpsychology #JewishResiliance #struggle #Redemption #divinepurpose #traumatotransformation #trauma #God #snake #parshatchukat #spritualgrowth Support US and Win BIG www.ndgraffle.comSupport the showGot your own question for Rabbi Bernath? We talk about: Brad Allen shares how he started from zero—literally—in a brand-new market where he knew no one, and how he built a thriving business rooted in relationships and results. We talk about why professionalism still matters, even in a world of viral TikToks and jean shorts, and how showing up like a pro can be your ultimate competitive edge. We also dive into the “messy middle” of today's real estate landscape—lawsuits, commissions, AI, and everything in between—and how agents can stay grounded through it all. Brad reminds us that clients aren't “crazy”—they're often just confused, and it's our job to provide the clarity they deserve. Most of all, this conversation is a testament to what's possible when you build your business on grit, systems, and service—not gimmicks. Whether you're a team leader, solo agent, or just someone trying to navigate this ever-changing market, Brad brings the kind of perspective this industry needs more of—honest, humble, and hella strategic.

Caroline Antonia from Rebellious Business joins Doug in this episode. Caroline talks about the painful reality of personal growth, comparing goal achievement to the grieving process. From her entrepreneurial journey that started with selling CDs at age 9 to building a thriving business network, Caroline shares why she believes goals require emotional sacrifice and identity shifts. Discover her unique perspective on personality tests, the "woo woo era" of goal setting, and why she thinks achieving big goals means saying goodbye to parts of yourself. KEY TAKEAWAYS • Grief is part of goal achievement and setting meaningful goals often requires letting go of your current identity and grieving the person you're leaving behind, which can be emotionally painful but necessary. • Subconscious goals get achieved more than conscious ones. Goals that feel meaningful and aligned with your deeper purpose are more likely to manifest than surface-level desires you write down without commitment. • While personality tests and similar can provide insight into who you are, they can create deterministic thinking that boxes you in rather than empowering you to grow. • Start with achievable milestones. When your big goal feels too distant to visualise, focus on the furthest point you can clearly see and make that your interim target to maintain momentum. • Instead of forcing yourself into a narrow niche, focus on clearly communicating your unique value proposition, which will naturally attract the right audience. • Emotional connection is crucial for goal achievement. Writing goals as if already achieved isn't enough; you must genuinely feel the emotions associated with having accomplished them to engage your subconscious mind. • Meaningful goals will make you question your identity and push you beyond what feels safe or familiar, creating necessary pressure for growth. BEST MOMENTS "I find that so far a lot of things that I work towards or that I really set my sights on, they require grief. I always have to grief an element of myself, which has been holding myself back." "What have I been doing this whole time? Like, why have I been playing so small? And I don't feel like that's fair because I think we're doing pretty well." "The pressure is an indication to shed. I haven't used that analogy for years... but the pressure is something that forces them to grow." "I'd embrace the pain, embrace the sadness of what was and what you could have done sooner. You know, that for me I find really painful." In this gripping class, Rabbi Yisroel Bernath delves into the tragic and turbulent rebellion led by Korach, Dathan, Abiram, and On ben Peles against Moses and Aaron. The narrative unveils not just a mutiny, but a masterclass in leadership, humility, and boundless love for even the most stubborn opponents.Through an exploration of four key episodes involving Dathan and Abiram, Rabbi Bernath uncovers their long history of discord and defiance. Yet the class's emotional apex comes with Moses' unexpected final act: rising to personally appeal to his bitterest enemies, even after G-d commanded their separation. Why? Because Moses could never give up on the potential for peace—even with those who never sought it.Drawing from the Lubavitcher Rebbe's insights on Parshas Korach, this class challenges us to ask: When is the pursuit of unity too much? And what makes someone truly worthy of leadership?Takeaways:True Leadership Is Relentless Love: Moses teaches us that real leadership isn't about titles or power, it's about never giving up on people, even those who oppose you. Some Quarrels Are Lifelong—Still, We Try: Dathan and Abiram weren't new to conflict; they had a history of opposition. Yet Moses still pursued peace, one last time.“Do Not Keep Up a Quarrel” Isn't Just a Nice Idea—It's a Lifesaving One: The Talmud's teaching, rooted in Moses' actions, reminds us that unity is sacred—even if it means swallowing our pride. The Power of One Final Attempt: “Moses stood up and went to Dathan and Abiram.” That one verse becomes a model for all of us: Don't assume it's too late to make peace. We Each Carry a Spark of Moses: As the Tanya teaches, every Jew carries a part of Moses' soul. That means we each have the capacity to rise above ego and reach out in peace.Peace Doesn't Mean Passivity: Pursuing peace doesn't mean tolerating abuse, it means knowing when to fight injustice and when to humble yourself for healing.#Torah #Moses #Judaism #Bible #BibleStudy #Korach #ParshatKorach #humility #Rebbe #mosesleadership #Peace #TorahLessons #TorahPortion Support US and Win BIG www.ndgraffle.comSupport the showGot your own question for Rabbi Bernath? Doug talks with Dan Leonardi, who went from Pepsi truck driver to corporate executive after quitting college. The career strategist and founder of Leonardi Personal Development worked at companies like Pepsi, Kellogg's, and ConAgra. He built a 35-unit condo complex to pay for his sons' college education and shares his approach to creating your own luck. At 68, Dan has released his book "Be the CEO of Your Life" and teaches students how to bridge theory with practical application. He explains the 70-20-10 rule that shows why relationships and experiences matter more than education and reveals how inverting traditional leadership structures can turn around struggling teams. KEY TAKEAWAYS • Create your own luck, success comes from taking action to create opportunities. Dan built a 35-unit condo complex to turn his sons' college expenses into profit. • The 70-20-10 Rule is something Dan follows and advocates for, only 10% of career success comes from education, 20% from relationships, and 70% from experiences. Most people graduate thinking they're done, but they're only at the 10-yard line with 90 yards of life still to play. • Life is three stages, ages 20-30 are for building knowledge through relationships and experiences. 30-40 is when you create financial wealth. 40+ is the compounding phase where everything comes together. • Dan shares how you can transform teams by putting customers and associates first, with leaders serving to remove obstacles rather than commanding from above. • Surround yourself with people who give energy and help others succeed, not those who drain energy and create obstacles. Your advisors should be positive and supportive. • Dan believes that whilst Academic education provides a foundation, success comes from applying knowledge to real situations. Listen to experienced professionals and learn from every interaction. • Successful people want to share their knowledge with younger generations. Don't be intimidated to ask questions, one conversation can change your trajectory and costs nothing. • Be the CEO of your own life! Take ownership of your path while treating parents and mentors as your board of directors. You make decisions, but surround yourself with wise advisors. BEST MOMENTS "If someone says to me, 'Hey, you're the luckiest guy in the world,' I would take it perhaps as an insult, because if you're just lucky, that implies I did nothing to create that luck." "90% of my learning came from two things. It was relationships and experiences." "Don't look at anybody else. Don't care about what everybody else is doing. You are the CEO of life of your life." On the night of Tisha B'Av, the Jewish people cried out of fear, not from a real threat, but from a perceived one. That night became a tragic turning point in our history, not because of a divine punishment, but because fear itself became the seed of generations of sorrow. This class explores the deeper meaning of those "vain tears" through Torah, psychology, and metaphor. From the self-fulfilling prophecy of the spies, to Harvard's famous "Rosenthal Experiment," to the chained circus elephant who forgot her strength, we see how fear and self-image can imprison entire generations. But we are no longer that generation. We are living in a time of healing and empowerment. This Tisha B'Av, we are called to rewrite the script. To cry no more. To rise with resolve. To finally break free and bring healing, light, and redemption to our world.Key Takeaways:Fear isn't always logical, but it's always powerful. Even miracles won't help if we don't believe in ourselves.Vain tears become real pain. When we cry over imagined powerlessness, we invite genuine suffering, because we surrender our G-d-given strength. We see ourselves as grasshoppers and so does the world. The way we perceive ourselves shapes how others treat us.Belief creates reality. Like elephants chained by false memories, we stay stuck not because we are weak, but because we think we are. This is the age of healing. We're not grasshoppers. We're not victims. We are a generation with tools, strength, and clarity. It's time to remember who we are.Tisha B'Av will be transformed. With courage, truth, and unity, even our day of weeping will become a day of joy, with the coming of Moshiach.#fear #healing #Jewish #Judaism #shlach #TorahPortion #Torah #TorahLessons #Bible #BibleStudy #TishaBav #Spirituality #Moshiach #Spiritual #lubavitch #RabbiWisdom Support US and Win BIG www.ndgraffle.comSupport the showGot your own question for Rabbi Bernath? In this weeks class, Rabbi Yisroel Bernath reveals the Torah's timeless wisdom for navigating today's anxious, high-speed world. Rooted in a single verse from Parshat Behaalotecha, we uncover how the cloud that guided the Jewish people through the desert wasn't just GPS, it was G-d's embrace, offering a blueprint for emotional resilience. Drawing on deep Talmudic insight, the story of the Mishkan, and modern-day inspiration like the heroism of Natan Sharansky, this class is a journey into the eye of the storm… where true serenity lives.Takeaways:* The "Magic Pill" for Stress: A single Torah verse can reframe your entire emotional state.* G-d's Embrace Is Constant: Just like a baby in its mother's arms, we can move through chaos and feel held.* Work ≠ Work: The Torah's definition of melachah (creative labor) holds spiritual secrets for how to balance doing and being.* The Sanctuary Within: Whether building or dismantling, stillness comes from knowing you're in the same Divine space.* Tehillim as a Lifeline: Learn how Psalms became the spiritual oxygen for Natan Sharansky—and how they can be for you, too.* Don't Just Know the Psalm. Rich Sander, Commercial Vice President at Smurfit WestRock, joins Harry Kendlbacher for a conversation about why slowing down can actually help you close bigger, more strategic deals. From resisting pressure to pitch too soon to earning trust in highly commoditized markets, Rich shares a refreshingly grounded take on what it really means to lead a sales team that delivers long-term value. They talk about: - The importance of doing real discovery — even when clients think they've already solved the problem - How to avoid being reduced to price in a commoditized market - What it means to slow down the sales cycle without losing momentum - Why intentionality, patience, and listening are your best tools in a high-velocity world This episode is for anyone who's felt the pressure to rush — and is ready to rethink what it takes to win with consistency.

Athena Brownson, a former professional skier who competed for 14 years before becoming a top Denver realtor speaks to Doug in this episode. Athena talks about the challenges she faced after multiple surgeries and becoming chronically ill from lyme disease. She shares why the goal-setting techniques that made her an elite athlete became her lifeline through chronic illness and her approach in real estate. Doug and Athena also explore morning routines, Athena's "greatness tracker" system, and how she transforms nervous energy into excitement. Athena and Doug give actionable strategies for approaching goals, especially when facing adversity.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Tough coaching taught Athena consequences and accountability. Her coaches ensured there would be consequences if she wasn't following instructions or skiing to her fullest potential, teaching her resilience and showing up. Lyme disease took Athena from athletic peak to chronic pain, she was diagnosed eight and a half years ago, going from top athlete to barely getting out of bed with 10 out of 10 pain. Athena writes goals in present tense daily as part of her morning routine. She learned to write "I am healing, I am healthy, I am full of energy" even when those things weren't true, creating neural pathways in her brain. Athena created a greatness tracker system for weekly accountability, she prints out weekly action items including face to face meetings, phone calls, notes, open houses, events, plus health goals like gym visits and clean eating. Visualisation has always helped Athena achieve her goals. If she could visualise landing a trick she'd never tried in her head, she knew she could land it in real life; now she visualises sales and happy clients. Real estate requires the same mentality Athena had as an athlete, she believes you need "a little bit of psychosis" to succeed in real estate, the same type athletes have. Goal setting prevents Athena from going on disability despite chronic illnesses, most people in her position go on bed rest and disability, but if she did that she'd be so depressed it would be game over for he. Athena views manifestation as consistent goal-writing by hand, writing goals by hand tells your brain what's important and helps recognise opportunities, making manifestation practical. BEST MOMENTS "I've pretty much been setting goals since I came out of the womb, even if it was unintentional."  "Half of the feat of reaching a goal is the simple act of showing up."  "If I could visualise, if I could close my eyes, visualise myself landing a trick that I had never tried before, but I landed it in my head, I knew that I could land it in real life."  "I reckon we could get rid of a certain amount of mental illness if we could get more people to be goal oriented."  "When you're in the midst of adversity, it's actually the most important time to create goals and to create those actionable steps, because that is what is going to keep your mind engaged in a positive manner."  ABOUT THE GUEST Athena Brownson: Former Pro Skier Turned Top Denver Realtor, Defying Limits in Life and Real Estate. Kendall unpacks the power of thinking differently, how eXp evaluates opportunities, and why looking at the true addressable market is key to future-proof business decisions. They dive deep into how eXp is "stacking the deck" by building intentional systems, fostering client-centric innovations, and leveraging AI to dominate the evolving landscape. Kendall shares her leadership journey, the importance of value alignment, her approach to partnerships, and how top performers separate themselves by being relentless about mindset, skillset, and toolset mastery. The conversation touches on: The critical shift from customer service to client experience. Why AI will not replace agents — but agents using AI will dominate. How eXp is building the number one brand through tech and global expansion. The overlooked dangers of confirmation bias with AI. The necessity of continuous personal and professional growth. Kendall also reflects on her leap from law to real estate, the lessons from the short sale market, and what it really takes to scale a modern brokerage. Key Takeaways: Strategic Decision Making:  Focus on the addressable market — not just agent count, but transaction volume and unit potential. Client Experience vs. Customer Service: Shift from reactive service to proactive, intentional client experiences that create loyalty and drive referrals. The Power of Core Values: How transparency, agility, and sustainability guide decision-making at eXp. AI as a Skillset: Leveraging AI is no longer optional. In this deeply moving and timely class, Rabbi Bernath opens with a heartfelt prayer for the victims of the Boulder attack and a reminder that silence in the face of evil is complicity. From the courtroom of Judgment at Nuremberg to the Torah portion of Naso, we journey through history, law, and soul.We explore the legacy of Joseph, alone, enslaved, and tempted and how a single vision of his father reminded him: One action changes everything.Joseph, who kept Shabbat even in Egypt, is rewarded not with rest but with purpose, his descendant offering a sacrifice on Shabbat itself, transforming a personal act into a communal revelation. With wisdom from the Lubavitcher Rebbe and reflections on our divine spark, we are reminded that every choice we make is a nuclear reaction of holiness. We are not small. We are not powerless. We are G-d's partners in redeeming this world.Key TakeawaysWe begin with a prayer for those wounded and shaken by the hate-fueled Anti-Jewish violence in Boulder. We must never grow numb to evil nor dismiss the power of standing up for what's right.Moral failure begins the moment we excuse the first injustice. As seen in Nuremberg and echoed in our lives, passivity is complicity.Joseph's strength came not from Torah laws, but from internalizing his worth. His vision of Jacob, representing all of humanity reminded him that his actions mattered deeply. You are not a chemical reaction, you are a nuclear reaction. One spark of holiness from you can ripple outward infinitely.Keeping Shabbat in Egypt wasn't just ritual—it was a declaration: Even in exile, I matter. Even in isolation, my light changes the world. You are the world. In this special post-Shabbat sermon recorded for Shavuot, Rabbi Yisroel Bernath takes us on a profound journey through the remarkable history of the Sassoon Codex and the legendary Crown of Aram Tzova. Woven into this tale of ink and parchment is a modern miracle: the voice of a mother reaching her daughter in captivity, reminding us that the Torah is not just a relic, but a living pulse of our people. From ancient scribes in Tiberias to secret hiding spots in Aleppo, from destruction to redemption, from loss to legacy, Rabbi Bernath reveals how the Jewish People have never just studied the Torah, we've carried it. We've risked our lives to protect it. And today, as we stand at the foot of Sinai once more, we are called to do the same.Key Takeaways:The Torah is Not History… It's Memory: Unlike history, which belongs to the past, memory shapes the present. The Torah is our collective memory and it calls us to live with responsibility and purpose. The Crown is More Than a Book: The story of the Crown of Aram Tzova reflects the Jewish people's fierce dedication to Torah. It symbolizes dignity, identity, and spiritual sovereignty.Miracles Happen When We Stay Connected: Agam Berger's story reminds us that even in darkness, light can pierce through. The Torah isn't just letters on parchment, it's a lifeline, a soul-connector.Torah is Our Crown—But We Must Guard It: Just as communities once locked the Crown in an iron chest, we too must fiercely protect our values, our faith, and our unity.Shavuot is Our Coronation Day: Every year, we place the crown back on our heads.
