We tend to read the Bible in a worldview boxed by the literal, material, and rational. Imagination wants to open a window to a vision of who we are called to be. This sermon explores the use of imagery in our faith.

Join us for a fascinating conversation on biblical imagery. Dr. Michael Seufert, pastor at Mission OPC in St. Paul, Minnesota, and author of the dissertation Of Beasts and Men: A Study of Genesis 49 in Light of Iconography, Metaphor, and Animal Studies, guides us through the rich tapestry of ancient Near Eastern hero culture and its implications for understanding Scripture. We explore Genesis 49, Jacob's poetic blessing, and its striking use of animal metaphors, unpacking themes of violence, power, and divine faithfulness. Dr. Seufert highlights the ambivalence in biblical heroism, contrasting the lion-like strength of Judah with the paradoxical power of the Lamb in Revelation. Dan Svendsen, pastor of First OPC in South Holland, Illinois, also provides his perspective as a preacher immersed in the narratives of 1 Samuel. Together, we examine how the stories of David and Judah resonate with biblical themes of leadership, humility, and redemption, offering additional depth and richness to our understanding of hero culture in the Bible. With insights into the cultural, theological, and practical applications of these themes, we discuss how the church today can embrace the counterintuitive way of weakness modeled by Christ. This collaborative discussion bridges rigorous scholarship and pastoral application, offering profound encouragement for the Christian life. Welcome to another review from the BATT team. Eila and Something Shiny is a narrative adventure scenario/campaign game designed by Jeffery CCH and published by NorthStar Games (though it's original printing was from ICE Makes). It was acquired as a Christmas gift and so this is not sponsored by the publisher. Kelly Latimore is an artist whose modern day Icons have an incredible ability to challenge where we see Christ in the world. Some of his most known works reimagine the Nativity in contexts of modern suffering: amongst the homeless in a tent city, seeking safety as refugees, huddling beneath the rubble in Palestine. At the beginning of the season of Advent this is a powerful conversation about the role of religious art, the places where God is located in our neighbourhoods, and the ways we might learn to see anew. Kelly shares some of his personal story, and how he began to experiment with Iconography. Will and Kelly discuss the reactions to some of these pieces, the tensions between tradition and progress and the way communities can use art to better represent the image of God in their midst. What if our understanding of early Christian art has been entirely misunderstood? Join us as we uncover the profound significance of iconography in the Orthodox Church, challenging the common notion that religious imagery was a later corruption. Reflect on Fr John Reimann's journey from a Methodist background to discovering the richness of iconography through my academic experiences at UCLA. We'll shed light on how icons, even from the catacombs of Rome, reveal a deep, historical connection to our creation in God's image and our divine calling to holiness.Explore how early Christian veneration practices are deeply rooted in Jewish traditions. Early Christians, many of them converts from Judaism, brought along the custom of venerating sacred texts, a practice that seamlessly transitioned into Christian liturgy. We dive into the placement and use of icons in early churches and the controversies they sparked, from improper practices to the veneration of tombs and requesting prayers from the departed. These traditions underscore a seamless continuity from Jewish roots to Christian worship, enriching our understanding of early Christian practices. The journey of icon veneration in the Orthodox Church is a story of resilience and theological depth. From the brutal iconoclastic controversies, where defenders of iconography faced severe punishments, to the resolution that established icons as windows to the divine prototype, we paint a vivid picture of this historical struggle. Learn about the importance of depicting Christ and saints accurately and understand the proper etiquette for venerating icons. Finally, we reflect on the spiritual realities manifested through iconography, reminding us of our sanctification and connection to the divine during liturgy. Tune in for a profound exploration of how icons elevate our worship and remind us of our eternal calling to holiness.******You can visit Fr John at Saint Anthony the Great Orthodox Church, in San Diego, CA:https://st-anthony.org/Please prayerfully consider supporting Cloud of Witnesses Radio:https://www.patreon.com/CloudofWitnessesRadioThank you for journeying w/ the Saints with us!

In his lecture, Jonathan Pageau presents a thoughtful examination of the Last Judgment through the lens of a late-11th-century mosaic, challenging the traditional view of it as solely an end-time event. He suggests that this imagery symbolizes an ongoing process of identity formation, where every entity acts as a judge, continually evaluating its alignment with its essence. This interpretation casts the Last Judgment in a new light, with the ideal human being as the ultimate measure of this alignment. Pageau further delves into how this imagery interacts with its placement within the church, enhancing the narrative of creation and ultimate fulfillment. He draws attention to the layered symbols within the scene, such as the crucifixion and harrowing of Hades. By exploring the cosmic symbolism—Christ as the source, the sheep and goats as symbols of inclusion or exclusion, and the strategic placement of figures—Pageau encourages a view of the Last Judgment not as a daunting reckoning but as a powerful allegory for the continuous formation and evaluation of identity against a higher ideal. This perspective not only demystifies the traditional fears associated with the Last Judgment but also prompts a personal reflection on how we align with broader, universal truths. Jonathan Pageau is a renowned artist and the host of The Symbolic World podcast. He specializes in the interpretation of symbolic patterns across various cultural and historical contexts. Learn more about Jonathan Pageau and embark on a journey into the symbolic universe by visiting his podcast at http://thesymbolicworld.com and his website at http://www.pageaucarvings.com. Rima Staines is an artist whose work straddles myth, magical realism and the folk arts. Her visual world is an umber and madder-infused chapel of misfits and magicians, story-rich and alchemical. Her paintings, which feel both ancient and familiar at once, have been exhibited and published internationally. In 2018 she was a finalist in the 'Best Artist' category of the World Fantasy awards.Rima has a long-held fascination with the idea of the liminal - that which lies at the edge of culture and society as well as the literal boundaries between one place and another, both metaphorical and real - and with the power of art that comes from that place. Her work is a kind of “Iconography of the Otherworld”. She lives in the south of England. We continue our examination of the different elements of the liturgy, specifically holy images in the liturgy. Fr. Mike highlights that because the Word was made visible in the flesh, Christians now can use images of Christ to pray. Liturgical art is a symbol that points to a greater reality than itself. It is meant to lift our hearts and minds to the Lord in a way that words cannot. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 1159-1162. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/ciy Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
