However, figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show University Hospital Limerick was actually more overcrowded this year, with 118 patients without a bed, even with the opening of the new 96 bed block. Ireland's only all-island angel investment syndicate, AwakenAngels, has returned from its latest United States trade mission, having secured a strategic partnership with global organisation Women in Innovation (WIN) to accelerate the number of women becoming early-stage investors. Through the partnership, the syndicate will educate women working across the globe in innovation, technology, finance, and enterprise to become active angel investors through participation in its AwakenAngels Academy. The partnership provides WIN's 6,000 members worldwide with access to the AwakenAngels Academy. The CPD-accredited programme is designed to equip women with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to invest in early-stage companies, including those led by Irish women. WIN members will join the next AwakenAngels Academy throughout 2026. The first cohort commences on 17th February, with a limited number of sponsored places still available for registration for women interested in learning more about angel investing at awakenangelshq.com. Formed in 2023, AwakenAngels recently revealed that it has already helped eight portfolio companies, all members of its sister all-island founder community, AwakenHub, secure more than €4.3M in investment. Portfolio companies include Gigi Supplements. The company, which won the InterTradeIreland Seedcorn competition, has just completed a €1.5M investment round and is now stocked in over 200 retail outlets, including Boots and Holland & Barrett stores across Ireland. Another four syndicate deals are set to close in the coming weeks. The new partnership was announced in New York at a reception at the British Consul General's residence, attended by senior diplomatic representatives, including Deputy Irish Consul General Roisin Leonard and Deputy British Consul General Mel Lawrence. The event was one of a series organised as part of AwakenHub and AwakenAngel's fourth St Brigid's Day Trade Mission, during which 13 women founders from NI and ROI pitched asks ranging from £1.5M to £7M. New research The agreement follows research highlighted by Chloe Alana Williams, co-lead of WIN's London chapter and founder of 8TH DAY, which found growing numbers of professional women are seeking alternative routes to investment advice and capital deployment. The findings cite low levels of trust in traditional banking and financial institutions. Instead, many are turning to peer-led networks and education-driven communities to guide their investment decisions, such as AwakenAngels. The Hidden Women Report's findings show 89% of the 2700 women surveyed feel it's important to be financially independent, rising to 92% among women 45+. Speaking about the partnership, Denise McQuaid, Cofounder and Director of Investor Relations, AwakenAngels, said: "The recent research by Chloe Williams, leader of the London WIN chapter, highlights the very real opportunities that exist for founder and angel investment communities like AwakenAngels and AwakenHub globally, and every woman who wants to have a bigger say in how she deploys her capital and owns her financial future. "This partnership is also very important news for women founders globally. Access to capital remains one of the biggest barriers to growth, and this collaboration with WIN will deliver a new global pipeline of informed, values-aligned women investors who actively want to invest into early-stage businesses worldwide. "By connecting women in innovation, finance, enterprise, and technology with the AwakenAngels Academy, we are turning their expertise and influence into ownership, and ensuring more women are at the investment table shaping the future of economies at home and around the world." Amanda Ramos, Chief Executive of WIN, said: "At WIN, we believe that true innovation requires a seat at every table, especially the one where financial decisions are made. This partnership with AwakenAngels is a vital step in evolving our members from industry practitioners to influential...

Church of England revs with a difference, Jamie Franklin and Thomas Pelham sit down to talk about the biggest news in Church and state. This time: The Prince of Darkness, Peter Mandelson, is in the news with further revelations of the leaking of confidential files to Jeffrey Epstein during Mandelson's time in government. It's a toss up for Plank of the Week between Zack Polanski - who wants to reform NATO whilst leaving it and creating something new - and Leo Varadkar - who wants to return Ireland to its traditional feminist pagan roots by merging the feasts of St Brigid and Imbolc. (No, this is not a joke.)Meanwhile, in the Church of England, the Diocese of London have somehow found the best part of a million pounds to start a new antiracist diversity drive whilst Sarah Mullally is confirmed as Archbishop of Canterbury. Mullally has also thrown her weight behind the controversial £100 million slavery reparations scheme, Project Spire, claiming that it is congruent with the Church's true mission. We review these claims plus commentary on the best way forward for Mullally regarding the vexed question of human sexuality. All that and much more as always. Curran has just published her new book Brigid - a reimagining of Ireland's most beloved saint - in which she details the life of Brigid, the miracles she made and the women she saved. It's the story of a trailblazer who carved her own path, rebelled against the status quo and could never be caged by men, by gods, or even by history itself. So if you've ever wondered who the real Brigid was, what's the story behind the cross and what inspired her to live as she did, then this is the episode for you. But first, Irish Times opinion editor Jennifer O'Connell is here to discuss some of the biggest stories of the week, including the tragic death of a homeless woman in Dublin city centre this month and why more women in Ireland are having babies in their 40s. Each February Ireland celebrates St Brigid, one of the most beloved figures in Irish history. She is woven into the landscape, the calendar and the culture, yet a simple question hangs over her story. Did she ever really exist? You may recall a very short episode on this topic last year. Since then, I have rethought the evidence, changed my view and this episode takes a much deeper look at the history. For centuries St Brigid has been remembered as a saint who stood alongside St Patrick at the dawn of Irish Christianity. In recent decades, however, a growing argument has claimed she was never a historical figure at all, but a pagan goddess transformed into a Christian saint. This episode is a journey through the turbulent fifth century to examine the evidence. Drawing on early medieval sources, folklore, ritual, and modern research to explore St Brigid the woman, Brigid the goddess, and try and determine where the truth lies.Support the show at www.patreon.com/irishpodcastSources and Further Reading: Dictionary of Irish Biography Brigit: https://www.dib.ie/biography/brigit-brighid-brid-bride-bridget-a0961 Johnson, Elva Making St Brigit real in the early middle ageshttps://muse.jhu.edu/verify?url=%2Fpub%2F423%2Farticle%2F941740&r=972076Lawrence, Lisa Pagan Imagery in the Early Lives of Brigit: A Transformation from Goddess to Saint? Morley's Mouthfuls Over 250 people gathered in Ballinasloe on Tuesday night demanded that there will be no downgrade of the Portiuncula University Hospital in the town. The newly formed Portiuncula Maternity Alliance has set out their demands and a large community mobilisation has begun despite the fact that this all unfolded after an August Bank Holiday weekend. The contention from health officials and Government politicians is that the removal of some high risk pregnancies from the hospital follows clinical advice and recommendations. However, the newly formed group, which saw medical professionals, the INMO and affected mothers, give testimony and views on the night questioned who gave this recommendation and why? The called for a fully independent review and also queried why the Ballinasloe facility was singled out when other hospitals have similar if not worse outcomes. Echoes from the past like Roscommon Hospital and St Brigid's Campus were brought up on the night and there was a real sense that the town feared losing this longstanding hospital which was described by one woman on the night as the ‘heartbeat' of the town. A rally will take place next Saturday in the town, people continue to sign the groups' petition and as time goes on, one would ultimately expect that the completed petition will find its way up to Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill's desk. Many also highlighted on the night that it was more investment the hospital needed, not a removal of services and it will be interesting to see whether there will be investment forthcoming from the Government in Budget 2026 in the autumn. Student accommodation is continuing to be a problem year in year out and with the academic year fast approaching a plea for help has been issued from the ATU Student's Union. They are calling on homeowners with spare room to sign up to the Rent A Room scheme. There is also concerns as to tenants rights when it come to accommodation as the warning signs for scams are sent out as the mad scramble for rooms ensues over the next month. Again investment is needed quickly and it will be interesting to see if changes made by government on rents will see investors build enough accommodation quickly enough to tackle the demand out there in the market. No doubt we will be following up on these stories and more on Galway Talks this coming Monday where our Galway Great after 11am is Tomás Rua Mac Con Iomaire. St. Patrick might be the most famous of the Irish saints...but he's far from the most interesting. In 2023, St. Brigid's Day was decreed a National Holiday in Ireland to honor Brigid. Over the millennia, this legendary woman has evolved into a figure encompassing myth, holy legend, pagan icon, and now modern feminist symbol. But who was Brigid, really? To answer that question, travel writer Nicola Brady set off around Ireland to see how she's celebrated, and she found that there's not one simple answer. Because, as with everything in Ireland, you never know quite what's around the corner. Listen for a story that takes you into forests and through time, from the windswept hills of Downpatrick to ancient cathedrals of Kildare. And you just might encounter some fire dancers, divine poetry, and even a miniature Batman on a bicycle... Thank you to everyone who featured in this episode: Judith Boyle from Boyle's Pub  Phil O'Shea from Solas Bhríde Tom McCutcheon from the Kildare Heritage Center Musicians Lisa Lambe and Moya Brennan Brigid Watson from Sustainable Journeys Ireland And poets Laura Murphy and Grainne Tobin.
