Morley's Mouthfuls Over 250 people gathered in Ballinasloe on Tuesday night demanded that there will be no downgrade of the Portiuncula University Hospital in the town. The newly formed Portiuncula Maternity Alliance has set out their demands and a large community mobilisation has begun despite the fact that this all unfolded after an August Bank Holiday weekend. The contention from health officials and Government politicians is that the removal of some high risk pregnancies from the hospital follows clinical advice and recommendations. However, the newly formed group, which saw medical professionals, the INMO and affected mothers, give testimony and views on the night questioned who gave this recommendation and why? The called for a fully independent review and also queried why the Ballinasloe facility was singled out when other hospitals have similar if not worse outcomes. Echoes from the past like Roscommon Hospital and St Brigid's Campus were brought up on the night and there was a real sense that the town feared losing this longstanding hospital which was described by one woman on the night as the ‘heartbeat' of the town. A rally will take place next Saturday in the town, people continue to sign the groups' petition and as time goes on, one would ultimately expect that the completed petition will find its way up to Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill's desk. Many also highlighted on the night that it was more investment the hospital needed, not a removal of services and it will be interesting to see whether there will be investment forthcoming from the Government in Budget 2026 in the autumn. Student accommodation is continuing to be a problem year in year out and with the academic year fast approaching a plea for help has been issued from the ATU Student's Union. They are calling on homeowners with spare room to sign up to the Rent A Room scheme. There is also concerns as to tenants rights when it come to accommodation as the warning signs for scams are sent out as the mad scramble for rooms ensues over the next month. Again investment is needed quickly and it will be interesting to see if changes made by government on rents will see investors build enough accommodation quickly enough to tackle the demand out there in the market. No doubt we will be following up on these stories and more on Galway Talks this coming Monday where our Galway Great after 11am is Tomás Rua Mac Con Iomaire. The Best of Galway Talks broadcast on weekends between 7-8am.

Friends of the Rosary,There are two major feasts in honor of St. Joseph, espouse of the Blessed Mother and patron of the Universal Church. On March 19, its solemnity day, we venerated him and his part in the work of redemption. On May 1, we honor him as the patron of workers worldwide and as our guide in our daily work obligations and rights in the social order.Liturgical veneration of St. Joseph began in the fifteenth century and was fostered by St—Brigid of Sweden, St. Bernadine of Siena, and St. Teresa.Sacred Scripture records no words of him. He quietly and faithfully fulfilled his mission of guarding God's greatest treasures upon earth, Jesus and Mary.He put his desires aside and, in silence, self-giving love, humility, and obedience, protected Mary and Jesus until he disappeared.Joseph is the master and role model of interior and spiritual life for all of us.March is the month dedicated to St. Joseph.Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Saint Joseph, Pray for Us!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary!+ Mikel Amigot | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! St. Brigid is one of Ireland's most well-known saints. While Christian churches have experienced a crisis of faith in recent decades, she seems to buck the trend. People of all faiths and none can identify with this figure. In this short episode, I explore the history of St. Brigid, asking if she was a Christian saint or a pagan goddess and why she continues to relate in the 21st century.Sound by Kate Dunlea.Read more about St Brigid at https://www.dib.ie/biography/brigit-brighid-brid-bride-bridget-a0961Support the show at https://patreon.com/irishpodcast Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/irishhistory. “On the eve of a quarter day, the time is liminal, so there's kind of a thinning of the space between the real world and the other world.”
St. Patrick might be the most famous of the Irish saints...but he's far from the most interesting. In 2023, St. Brigid's Day was decreed a National Holiday in Ireland to honor Brigid. Over the millennia, this legendary woman has evolved into a figure encompassing myth, holy legend, pagan icon, and now modern feminist symbol. But who was Brigid, really? To answer that question, travel writer Nicola Brady set off around Ireland to see how she's celebrated, and she found that there's not one simple answer. Because, as with everything in Ireland, you never know quite what's around the corner. Listen for a story that takes you into forests and through time, from the windswept hills of Downpatrick to ancient cathedrals of Kildare. And you just might encounter some fire dancers, divine poetry, and even a miniature Batman on a bicycle... Thank you to everyone who featured in this episode: Judith Boyle from Boyle's Pub Phil O'Shea from Solas Bhríde Tom McCutcheon from the Kildare Heritage Center Musicians Lisa Lambe and Moya Brennan Brigid Watson from Sustainable Journeys Ireland And poets Laura Murphy and Grainne Tobin. Also, much of the music you've heard in this episode was recorded live in St. Brigid's Cathedral. Thank you to Hot Press for helping with the recording and thanks to all the performers from that evening as well. And a big thanks to Paula O'Brien of Brigid 1500 for helping us onsite. It's all go, if a bit slow. Will we have a new government by the 22 January deadline, or is after St Brigid's Day more likely? And don't forget the Seanad elections. A DPP file, 14 years after the final Moriarty report, may spell tribunal trouble for Michael Lowry, arguably not a great look for new generation political avatar, Simon Harris.
Writer Manchán Magan joins Dearbhail to talk about the stories, language and mythology that Ireland shares with Indian culture, from the story of St Brigid's cloak to the Irish folk song made famous by Christy Moore, about an adulterous wife trying to blind her suspicious husband; ‘Tipping it up to Nancy'.
