Last week was a whirlwind—nonstop meetings, long hours, and the grind of trying to lock down corporate contracts. It's no joke... and honestly, it's exhausting. So when Friday hit, I hit pause and caught up with an old friend by the beach. That little breather led into a chill weekend where, for once, work took the backseat. But come Sunday, I was back in prep mode—getting equipment ready for a big Monday ahead. That morning, I drove out to the Valley to meet up with my brother Bams from Genocide, who's been working on something major: a complete rebuild of his car, fresh off GNRS—bare metal, new color, the works. We took a ride out to Santa Paula to link with the legendary model car artist Armando Flores at his iconic garage, a place where real magic happens. The day was filled with good vibes—hanging, mixing, soaking in the art, the stories, and even signing the famous case covered in names from legends in the game. I've never been asked to sign anything like that before... it meant the world, especially sharing that moment with my brother. We grabbed lunch, talked about life and builds, and kept the convo flowing on the drive back—paint, wheels, vision, dreams. Wrapped the night with Bams and his fam, feeling grounded and inspired.Words of wisdom this week:Sometimes life is about risking everything for a dream nobody can see but you.And don't let fear be the reason you settle for a life you don't love.Let's talk about that.Stay Golden y'all
In this episode of Farm Talk, host Paul Ward visits Petty Ranch in Saticoy, California, with special guest Chris Sayer, a fifth-generation farmer. Chris discusses the transition of Petty Ranch from growing lemons since the 1930s to becoming a 100% avocado farm. The decision to switch crops is attributed to opportunities for crop rotation, changes in the global lemon market, and pest and seed issues. Chris details the types of avocados they grow, including the Hass and Lamb Hass varieties, and highlights their commitment to soil health through practices such as cover cropping and mulching. The discussion also touches on the water-saving benefits of these practices, contributing to improved soil structure and water retention. Chris Sayer emphasizes the importance of sustainable farming, mentioning the farm's efforts to enhance soil health and water efficiency. The conversation explores the impact of cover crops on soil moisture, water holding capacity, and drainage improvement. Chris also anticipates the future application of technology in agriculture, particularly in soil monitoring and water management. The episode concludes with insights into the collaborative farming culture in Ventura County, the significance of Ventura County's agricultural green belt, and the unique climate that makes it an ideal region for farming. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone on Monday announced that the archdiocese would be submitting a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Cordileone earlier in August had warned that the filing was “very likely” in response to the “more than 500 civil lawsuits” alleging clerical sexual abuse filed against the archdiocese. A Chapter 11 filing, the archbishop said at the time, would allow the archdiocese to deal with those cases “collectively rather than one at a time,” resulting in both a “faster resolution” of the crisis as well as “fair compensation” for the victims. Among the other U.S. dioceses that have filed for bankruptcy this year include Oakland; Ogdensburg, New York; and Albany, New York. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/255156/san-francisco-archdiocese-announces-chapter-11-bankruptcy-filing The dictatorship of President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua sent police and prosecutors on August 19 to evict six Jesuits living near the Jesuit Central American University. The Jesuits showed the officers proof of the order's ownership but it made little difference and they were ordered to leave. They left without incident, taking with them a few personal items. The Central American Province of the Society of Jesus stated: “We strongly condemn this act of violence against our community and we reaffirm our confidence that the Lord of History will continue to protect the Jesuits of Nicaragua during this difficult period.” The closure of the university has left more than 9,500 students without access to education. Since the anti-government protests of 2018, the expropriation is the latest act of harassment and repression suffered by the Church, which has also affected other Catholic institutions and political dissidents. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/255155/nicaragua-dictatorship-renames-university-evicts-6-jesuits-from-adjacent-property As the new school year began, students arriving at Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California, experienced both a tropical storm and an earthquake. For Thomas Aquinas College, the storm brought high winds and three inches of rain. Students were moving into their dorms that day, and many took shelter there as they set up their rooms for the upcoming semester. Amid the wind and rain, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake rattled the mountains four miles southeast of Ojai, just a few miles from Thomas Aquinas' campus. Newly hung photos began to fall from the walls, plaster chipped from the walls, and the buildings shook violently, reported Chris Weinkopf, executive director of college relations. “By God's grace,” he said, “no one was harmed, and the damage, though widespread, was not serious.” https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/255158/thomas-aquinas-college-reports-minimal-damage-amid-tropical-storm-earthquake Saint Rose of Lima, the first saint of the New World. At a very young age, she chose to consecrate her life to God. She practiced very intense prayer and penance daily, sometimes depriving herself of food and sleep. She joined the Third Order of St. Dominic and lived in a little hut in her parents' garden, working to help support them. She was ill for the last three years of her life, and was cared for by a government official and his wife. She died at the age of 31 on August 24, 1617, feast of Saint Bartholomew, as she herself prophesied. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-rose-of-lima-577

We invited him on the podcast after his interaction and relationship working with Charles, standing himself out as an artist with a mindset set up for success through his eagerness to learn, work with others, sell himself, and aim for higher standards and goals for himself and others In just 1 year deciding to become an artist, he was recognized enough to be invited to be a part of the Latin Grammys in Las Vegas, Nevada, known through his song Lo Mejor "My song Destiny says some pretty brutal stuff about my life and no one's ever asked me about it so I'd start there would be very interesting. Growing up I went through a lot of trauma but it made me a strong independent man. I've always liked to write stories and poems, since I was in elementary school I would win awards for writing. My music career was a leap of faith and something I always wanted to do but didn't have the courage until now and everyone including my son thought I was crazy but I took myself to the Latin Grammys with no management ..." Laurel Braitman grew up in nearby Santa Paula and attended Thacher School before embarking on a circuitous and peripatetic career that led her to the faculty at Stanford School of Medicine where she is the Director of Writing and Storytelling. She just published her memoir, "What Looks Like Bravery," about her family and journey through grief, loss, growth and love. She previously wrote the New York Times best-seller "Animal Madness." Braitman's father, a prominent cardiac surgeon in Ventura County, was diagnosed with cancer when Laurel was three, and he endured brutal treatments one after another with the purpose of teaching her and her brother everything they needed to know about life. When he died, Braitman blamed herself for not being able to heal him herself, and lived in denial for years, leading to one misadventure after another, especially in the partner department. "Bravery" takes us along on her road to redemption, with stops along the Umpqua River in Oregon, the Aleutian Islands, Lake Como in Italy, the high desert of New Mexico and the Bay Area. With lots of familiar Ojai references. She faced one tragic loss after another, trying to find meaning amid the devastation. The book will inevitably be compared to Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love" and Cheryl Strayed's "Wild," but it holds a more poignant and hopeful tone and ends with a twist that sums up the hard-earned wisdom found along the way. We talked about Ojai in the good old days, steelhead fishing, growing up country and how death haunts us all. We did not talk about Jimmy Piersall's battle with depression, the collected sketches of Monty Python's Flying Circus or Darwin's finch collection at the British Museum & Library. Look for her book tour - she will be giving a reading on Saturday, March 18th at the Deer Lodge from 3 to 6 p.m.
