Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy has long been a pusher of junk science, especially when it comes to research around vaccines and autism. So it should come as no surprise that he appears open to revisiting the decades-old FDA approval of the abortion drug mifepristone, at least in part based on a report from a conservative think tank that was neither peer-reviewed, nor published in a medical journal. What the report in question conveniently contradicts more than 100 peer-reviewed studies that show mifepristone is safe to use and effective. Jessica Valenti, author of book ‘Abortion: Our Bodies, Their Lives, And The Truths We Use To Win,' joins us to talk about the state of reproductive rights in the U.S. with President Donald Trump is back in power. And in headlines: Trump again walked back his threats for steep tariffs on the European Union, Russia unleashed another massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine, and Republican Senators throw cold water on the House version of Trump's spending and tax plan — a.k.a. the Big Beautiful Bill.Show Notes:Check out Jessica's book –https://tinyurl.com/2zs7jfszSubscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday
What happens after the dream comes true? In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty speaks with John Rood—entrepreneur, coach, and author of Beyond the Exit—about the emotional and identity shifts that follow selling a business. John shares his personal post-exit experience and insights from interviewing over 70 entrepreneurs who have navigated the same uncharted territory. From the shock of sudden stillness to rediscovering joy and meaning, this conversation reveals the unspoken side of success. Whether you're preparing for your own exit or reflecting on what's next, this is a must-listen for founders and visionaries alike. About the Guest:John Rood is the author of Beyond the Exit: What Successful Entrepreneurs Do with the Rest of Their Lives. After building and selling his education business to private equity, John became fascinated by what happens after the "big win." He now helps entrepreneurs redefine purpose, identity, and fulfillment beyond business success. He lives in the Chicago area with his wife and sons. Key Takeaways: Selling a business often leads to an unexpected emotional void—loss of identity, purpose, and routine. Many entrepreneurs underestimate the psychological transition post-exit, feeling unmoored or invisible after years of high momentum. True meaning after the exit doesn't always mean building another business—it can look like stillness, healing, or exploring forgotten passions. Structuring your life across health, relationships, personal growth, and fulfillment can prevent post-exit burnout. Your best work might still be ahead—just in a different form. Nearly 60% of women are worried about job losses due to AI, but only 22% are actively adopting it. This reflects a broader pattern of workplace inequality, where tech revolutions risk leaving women behind. The solution lies in leadership, embracing vulnerability and authenticity, focusing on short-term clarity, and not pretending to have all the answers. But does it also lie in Sheryl Sandberg's “lean in” philosophy, or does this encourage women to behave more like men in order to fit in?This episode's guest is Sheela Subramanian, who has had an extensive career in tech leadership, including roles at Google, Slack, and Salesforce. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 23, 2024 is: palaver puh-LAV-er noun Palaver is an informal word that usually refers to unimportant or meaningless talk. It can also refer to misleading or deceptive speech, or to a conference or discussion. In British English the word is sometimes used as a synonym of fuss to refer to unnecessary excitement about something. // Enough of this palaver. We have more important things to discuss. See the entry > Examples: "Henry [Thoreau] was working at his journal, as he usually did for a part of each day. He was reading Chaucer and liking it. A couple of days later, on Monday, January 3, he made popcorn, which he playfully called 'cerealious blossoms' because they were 'only a more rapid blossoming of the seed under a greater than July heat.' On Wednesday, January 5, as early clouds gave way to midday sun, he praised manual labor as 'the best method to remove palaver from one's style.' Maybe he took his own advice about palaver. We hear no more from him about cerealious blossoms." — Robert D. Richardson, Three Roads Back: How Emerson, Thoreau, and William James Responded to the Greatest Losses of Their Lives, 2023 Did you know? Let's talk about palaver. Though the word comes from Portuguese, it likely entered English by way of the West African coast in the 18th century. Portuguese sailors there used their word palavra, which in general use means "speech" or "word," as a term for discussions with the native people they encountered. English sailors applied palaver for the same, and then brought the word back to their own shores. The Portuguese word comes ultimately from the Late Latin noun parabola, meaning "speech" or "parable." If Portuguese isn't in your wheelhouse, perhaps you'll recognize the influence of Latin parabola on other tongues: the Spanish palabra, for instance, means "word," and the French parler means "to speak."

Then, they share tips for optimizing AI models, like asking follow-up questions and training them to perform exactly how you want. They also touch on data privacy concerns behind AI, regulatory protocols, the emergence of new job roles in the future of the AI era, and how to leverage human jobs with AI jobs. It's important that women stay close to AI. When following the developments, we're starting to see different behaviors from workplaces. More workplaces are looking for AI fluency and AI skills. So, there's already a gender gap, right? Just from a STEM perspective. But if now workforces are and workplaces are looking for AI fluency and their skill sets, women are just going to continue to fall behind. - Nichole SterlingTo wrap up the conversation, Helen and Nichole share their perspective on the often hostile mindset architects have surrounding AI and the undeniable fundamental changes AI has on the industry paradigm. In the early days after the shock of Oct. 7, many Diaspora Jewish communities including Canada swung into action to send military equipment, clothing and medical supplies to Israel–along with emergency financial help. But with the conflict in its sixth month and over 130 Israeli hostages still being held in captivity, grass roots groups have sprung up from coast to coast to coast, as Canadians take their all their grief and worry from the past few months and try to do something positive with it: some with their hands, some with their feet, and some with light. They are getting out in the world and encouraging others to start moving towards hope-even if it's just for a few blocks (or a few hats or prayers). On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we meet members of Run for Their Lives: Toronto's Tovit Neizer, Thornhill's Michelle Factor and Vancouver's Daphna Kedem, plus Calgary's Michele Doctoroff, who runs, too, but also helms the Knitzvah Project: creating warm hats for IDF soldiers. And you'll hear about Gale Star's growing Candles4Israel initiative, now taking place in homes every Friday night in her Toronto neighbourhood. What we talked about: Learn more about Run for Their Lives campaign and find a chapter near you. Read more about Daphna Kedem's activism in Vancouver, in The CJN. See the pattern to knit toques for IDF soldiers, and learn more about other knitting projects for the IDF, in The CJN. In Chapter One of Founding Futbol, we explore why that game had meaning, what made it special and what key information soccer fans should know about that team and match. Episode 136: Redesigning the Future of WorkHow do you build a people-first workplace environment that is both innovative and supportive? On this episode of Practice Disrupted, we sit down with Brian Elliott, a leading expert on workplace flexibility and co-author of How the Future Works: Leading Flexible Teams to Do the Best Work of Their Lives who spent two decades building companies and leading teams as a startup CEO and leader at Google and Slack. Brian co-founded Future Forum to help decision-makers tackle real-world challenges, including hybrid work and building for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Since Future Forum has ended, Brian shares where to look for insight and data about the workplace to keep topics top of mind and weighs in on the debate between office and work-from-home culture and the opinions about different generations' approaches to work. Brian also illustrates the need for intentionality if/when people come together and the effect it specifically has on marginalized communities. At the end of the day, people are people. And what we're talking about here is actually a really core element, which is, ‘How do you drive engagement of employees in the mission and purpose of your business?' That engagement is what gets them to go the extra mile to try harder to work harder for your customers. It shows up in things like trust and transparency, and how that actually impacts people's work ethic, much more so than anything else. - Brian ElliottThen, Brian illustrates the overarching element of a flexible, innovative workplace: emphasizing a people-first approach. We learn of a few companies implementing innovative strategies and tactics to their support teams, and Brian provides recommendations for starting those conversations, including creating boundaries for the communication tools put into place. To wrap up the episode, Brian gives his perspective on whether architecture should pivot its business model in regard to output, quality, and productivity and gives recommendations for leaders to implement change within their organization. Plus, we learn what the changing economy can mean for the future of workplace culture, and Brian shares how the next steps in his career are still in support of making work life better for people. We take a deep dive into the opening credit sequence (if that's not your jam, jump ahead to 39:40--we said it's a deep dive!). We lament the fate of Hell's usher and learn Tori is a Jane Austen buff. We breath a sigh of relief that we find out why Newton named his car Dick Turpin

Brian Elliott is a veteran executive leader, advisor, speaker, and best-selling co-author of “How the Future Works: Leading Flexible Teams to the Best Work of Their Lives”. After several years in leadership at Slack, he co-founded and was the Executive Leader of the Future-of-Work think tank Future Forum. Brian shares wide-ranging insights including: executive/employee trust issues, how executives feel disconnected if not engaging in the (virtual) spaces where their teams are, how productivity can be gamed, the disease of meetings(!), building for the future based on where we are now, and the need to create constraints to channel new ways of working. KEY TAKEAWAYS [02:38] Brian explores his desire to be a professor doing research and analytics as a case writer at HBS. [05:02] Brian likes to put himself in situations where he has to learn and grow. [05:41] Brian gets great feedback which helps him evolve and improve as a manager. [07:25] Survival depended on culturally aligning people from different disciplines and backgrounds, sharing understanding of problems and solving them. [08:35] Being transparent about the P&L was critical and treating people like adults. [09:10] Getting to know each other was essential, regularly breaking bread together. [10:33] Brian's resume redemption move—transitioning to Google doing product development. [12:10] The first issue to address was mending culture—dysfunction across a diverse team. [13:40] Establishing (early) protocols, enabling distributed teams to have effective meetings. [14:50] Brian moves to Slack to help integrate a variety of partners. [15:42] The origin story of Slack as a communications backbone. [16:27] The impact of Brian's team being 9 to 5 office-based but not co-located at HQ. [17:49] Three things came together during the pandemic to create Future Forum. [19:49] Brian repeatedly builds teams/departments and then moves on to something smaller. [20:52] Brian leans into his experiences in external facing communications. [23:15] Henry Ford experimented with five, six, seven, and even four day work weeks! [24:17] We haven't revisited our inherited systems of work, when offices initially did “factory” work. [25:21] Why do we perpetuate past habits thinking they continue to be the “recipe for success”? [26:40] Trust is the core issue, which wasn't questioned when we had to get through the pandemic. [27:45] Trust is being questioned as executives to return to empty offices and they aren't where the conversations are happening. [30:26] Disconnected communications across spaces are resulting in pushes to return to the office. [33:35] Disparity in perceptions about transparency lead to discord, while planning without employees' inputs. [34:09] A consensus driven approach to decision making and anecdotal storytelling driving policy. [34:40] Gen Z's are looking for a balanced approach—not all in the office or at home. [36:07] If we get frustrated, we can't go backwards. [36:37] Intentional design—who does the current office design actually work for? [39:09] Feedback and the mediocre management problem. [40:00] Productivity is easy to game. [42:40] What date are we building from for our futures? Are we redesigning forward? [43:54] Why returning to the office full-time is illogical and counterproductive. [46:10] How to develop guardrails and prevent extremes. [48:16] The “disease” called meetings which hinders offering flexible hours. [49:22] Top reasons behind having too many meetings—including obligation and FOMO. [50:54] Brian describes the need to put constraints in place to create new work habits. [53:35] What worked for Brian at Future Forum for optimal teamwork. [54:43] Brian's hope for his children as we move further into the Future of Work. [56:54] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: Figure out what problem you are trying to solve, engage directly with a trusted group of your employee population, and listen to them. RESOURCES Brian Elliott on LinkedIn Brian's book “How The Future Works: Leading Flexible Teams to the Best Work of Their Lives” QUOTES (edited) “If there's a through line throughout my entire career, it's continuous learning and putting myself in situations where I am going to be a little—if not a lot—uncomfortable, but learn, grow, and develop.” “The only way that we survived was figuring out how we got people from different disciplines and backgrounds aligned in moving together. Having a shared understanding of the problems we were trying to solve, and transparency about what was working and what wasn't in the business.” “You hire adults, don't treat them like children.” “It was about getting people who were more experienced to occasionally sit on their hands and listen to people who are more junior, who may have had a different idea of how to do things and giving them the space to bring those ideas forward.” “We spent decades not questioning that even while technology changed really fundamentally, even while demographics changed fundamentally, even while the nature of the work itself became a lot less rote, and we still found ourselves in that rut.” “As a leader, I experienced things as I was growing up that led to my success in the 1980s and the 1990s, and I believe that that's the recipe for success and therefore I think that the rest of you should follow my example.” “I've had these conversations with a lot of people and the question often comes back to a couple things: What are you doing to measure outcomes in the business? What are you doing to see how the business is performing, how your teams are performing? What are you doing to train your managers to do that? But the other part is how involved are the executives themselves in where the work is happening?” “The challenge is those executives aren't where the conversations are happening. They're happening in Slack and they're happening in Teams. The executives are not where the team is.” “If an executive says to their employees ‘I'm worried about productivity, so the answer is I need you back in the office three days a week.' Everybody looks at them and says ‘what you're saying is you don't trust me.' If an executive says ‘I think we have a problem with productivity and I think we have too many meetings.' You know what happens? Everybody cheers because executives agree with this and so do their employees.”

Episode 36 acknowledges Mental Health Awareness Month through conversation aimed at demonstrating how our connection to one another can be formed with sharing and listening. Joe and Rooster chat with fellow Marine Corps Veteran Lupita Hernandez. Lupita started running to improve her mental health to fight her depression and PTSD, but what grew from it was “Run for Their Lives,” a yearly ultra-marathon for PTSD awareness. Parts of this conversation might make you feel a certain way; you are not alone; we believe to break the stigma associated with mental health requires discussion, sharing, and feeling all the feels.
Today, I'm joined by a returning guest to the show. You might remember Paul Glover from back in episode 120. Paul helps us understand why everyone needs a fool in their lives. He is an Executive Performance Coach, Speaker, and Author. He spent 20 years as a Federal Court Trial Lawyer before making the transition to helping leaders. Paul is returning to the show to discuss his recent Tedx talk called Everyone Needs a Fool in Their Lives. In this performance, Paul shares why having a fool in our lives, someone we trust enough to give us the psychological safety required to tell us the truth, is essential so we can see our blind spots and break our patterns of self-destructive behavior. I'm excited to have him on the show to talk about this important topic. There IS a revolution happening in the workplace. A new dawn for how, where, and when we engage with this major component of our life called work. In the aftermath of the pandemic experience organizations around the world were forced to innovate the age-old construct of the typical 9-5 office work week. For some, they thrived and others (as we're witnessing the backlashes of today) have struggled to find the delicate, yet ironically simple solutions to empower people and redefine how work gets done at scale. We're inside a major paradigm shift that's calling for leaders to reimagine the relics of old and create a future where people can do the best work of their lives (in and out of the office).Today we're thrilled to share the mic with Brian Elliot, who sees a Future of Work that inspires us and many others. He's spent three decades leading teams and building companies as a startup CEO, at Google, and at Slack where he was Senior VP. Brian also is the author of "How The Future Works". A blueprint for using flexible work to unlock the potential of your people, and championing the new age belief that by letting go, leaders and companies will get more back than they ever thought possible. If you're a leader at any level, at any organization, thinking about important topics like burnout, employee well-being, diversity, hybrid and remote work, there is a wealth of knowledge dropped in this 45min episode with the research backed best practices for redesigning work to be more flexible, inclusive, and connected.MORE ABOUT BRIANBrian Elliot is an Advisor, Speaker, Builder, Best-Selling Author, Co-founder of Future Forum and former Exec at Slack & Google. Happy National Poetry Month! We kick off this episode with Emily reading Lucille Clifton's poem, “Climbing,” and end with an in-depth conversation with poet Shuly Cawood about her poem, “Starter Marriage.” [The full text of Shuly's poem is at the end of this description if you'd like to read it before or while listening to the episode.] Both of us have Writing and Creativity on our minds. Emily started Julia Cameron's THE ARTIST'S WAY, and Chris is listening to WRITING FOR IMPACT by Bill Birchard. And we have some reading/writing synchronicity going on with Natalie Goldberg. Emily is reading & listening to her classic, WRITING DOWN THE BONES, and when visiting McNally Jackson at Rockefeller Center in NYC Chris picked up WRITING DOWN THE BONES DECK. More recently read books include WHY AM I SO ANXIOUS by Tracey Marks, MY DEAREST DARLING by Lisa Franco, BOOKSELLING IN AMERICA AND THE WORLD, ed. by Charles B. Anderson. And thanks to listener Colleen's birthday book club tradition, we revisited a childhood favorite, Judy Blume's ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET. There's another #buddyread on our horizon: TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY IN SEARCH OF AMERICA. We're reading this for the Vintage Book Club which is sponsored by Book Club on the Go and will meet on Thursday, April 20, 1 pm at the Wood Memorial Library and Museum in South Windsor, CT. All are welcome. We had a fantastic biblioadventure together in Boston. After spending the day working in Simmons University's Beatley Library, we visited the amazing independent bookstore, Brookline Booksmith. Emily is going to be moderating two author sessions at the Newburyport Literary Festival, April 28-30: — The Other Family Doctor: A Veterinarian Explores What Animals Can Teach Us about Love, Life, and Mortality by Karen Fine, DVM —Three Roads Back: How Emerson, Thoreau, and William James Responded to the Greatest Losses of Their Lives by Robert D. Richardson with a foreword by Megan Marshall (Emily's conversation will be with Megan). Chris is bummed that she won't be able to attend the Newburyport Literary Festival or either of the two Willa Cather conferences this June. She is, however, planning to attend a series of four virtual events with author Benjamin Taylor that the National Willa Cather Center is offering beginning on April 27th. Taylor's new book, CHASING BRIGHT MEDUSAS: A LIFE OF WILLA CATHER, is to be published in November. Chris & Emily ______ Starter Marriage by Shuly Cawood after Erin Adair-Hodges* First there was the word and the word was trying. Trying the apartment with white walls, popcorn ceilings, footsteps heavy above, thudding over our days. Trying the job I took filing papers into squeaking cabinets, the one you took answering phones for dentists. Trying the brown bag lunches with limp sandwiches and sliced cheese, the softening apple, the room-temperature soda. Consuming it all on church steps, hunched below the overhang as it rained. Trying the cold pool after work with dead insects needing to be netted. Unraveling towels, TJ Maxx suits, the walk back on the no-car driveway. All heat evaporated. Empty stomachs. No one wanted what the other craved. Trying the red Chevrolet with the bad battery, no parking without pay, the bus rides to and from work, your stop, my stop, the sun hitting hard, us squinting at the sky. Your last day, the blue electric toothbrush they gave you as goodbye. Buzzing in your mouth with all those trapped words. Trying the new queen mattress we could not afford but bought anyway. Trying the laundry we toted to the next building, plastic hampers in our arms full of every day's dirt. Coffee but no creamer, bread but no toaster, sugar hardened in the bag. Day-old everything bagels, buy-one, get-one veggie burritos, dollar theater on Sundays. New job but less pay, new boss but no promotion. Saving for tickets for never vacations. Trying the places we gave up for each other: city salted by an ocean, all those fish and ferry rides; town with three stoplights, two policemen, a forest to get lost in. Your dreams, my dreams, weeds by the parking lot. Trying your face a broken banister, my hands an unused map. *The first nine words are borrowed from “Portrait of Mother: 1985” by Erin Adair-Hodges ______
