Ps. Julius RwotlonyoWe are just a few days away from Uganda's 63rd Independence anniversary and about three months from a national election. As we reflect on our journey and future, God is calling us to a higher standard: Stop idolatry. Serve God alone.
September 23, 2025 Ezek. 24:1-25:11; Ps. 108:5-13; Prov. 23:29-35; Heb. 11:1-7
In the end, our purpose in life comes down to one of two things. Jesus sums it all up in today's reading in Luke. “No servant can serve two masters … he will be devoted to the one and despise the other” He ends by bluntly saying, “You cannot serve God and money” [16 v.13] What is it to “serve” money? This is not the most common Greek word for ‘serve', in Acts, Luke only uses the word in Ch. 20 v.19 when he quoted Paul's words to the Ephesian elders (and Luke was with him at the time), he told them, “You yourselves know how I lived …. serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials … I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable …” This was serving indeed! In writing to the Romans about issues over the law of Moses Paul says, “but now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so now we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.” [7 v.6] But the commitment involved in serving is parallel; it is the same! Most interesting is the fact that the one place where John used the Greek word in his gospel (8 v.33) it is translated as “enslaved”!Those Jesus sees as serving money he sees as being enslaved to it. It is the ‘be all' and ‘end all' of their thinking. Today, it is a matter of the things money can ‘buy,' the pleasure and pride of owning the best of everything, of taking fabulous holidays, etc., with a token gesture toward others to ease their conscience, even fitting in a visit to church. Those who serve God, see how temporary and misleading are the rewards of serving money. People who decide to serve God have a “bigger mind”, i.e. a bigger vision of thought. That famous chapter of Hebrews 11 selects the example of Moses when, surrounded by wealth as the adopted grandson of Pharaoh, “choosing to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt” [v.25-26]What do we consider to be of greater wealth today? Less and less would make Christ their choice. Some, foolishly, try to have it both ways. If we are “lukewarm” – as with Laodicea, let us remember the message of Jesus to them – read Revelation 3 v.15-16.
Today, the Lord poses before us this choice between God and Mammon. He avers to us that we cannot serve them both. That is an either-or choice. But never both! The reason is that we actually do not get to give everything to God, who deserves and demands all of us to love and serve Him, because we will give something to mammon. What we tend to do is get the best of both, so to speak.
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus teaches that we cannot serve both God and "mammon." While "mammon" is often translated as "money," it more broadly refers to anything we rely on in place of God; we cannot serve both God and anything else at the same time. Importantly, this is not a call to live an austere life devoid of possessions, but rather a call to prioritize God and steward our possessions wisely. Each of us must identify what our personal "mammon" might be—whether it's money, power, comfort, or something else—and ensure we are using it to serve God, not the other way around. By doing so, we may give up some measure of worldly wealth, but we gain something far greater: spiritual wealth that surpass anything the world can offer. Scripture: Luke 16:10-13 NIV 10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else's property, who will give you property of your own? 13 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Luke 16:10-13 AMP 10 “He who is faithful in a very little thing is also faithful in much; and he who is dishonest in a very little thing is also dishonest in much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of earthly wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you? 12 And if you have not been faithful in the use of that [earthly wealth] which belongs to another [whether God or man, and of which you are a trustee], who will give you that which is your own? 13 No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand devotedly by the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon [that is, your earthly possessions or anything else you trust in and rely on instead of God].”

Jason grew up in a Korean American home, shaped early by Jehovah's Witness teachings and a deep fear of dying without God. As a teen he encountered the love of Jesus at a youth retreat, then years later, in the middle of a college party, Jesus met him again and broke chains of drugs, shame, and depression. Jason was then called into ministry and now pastors youth, witnessing healing, deliverance, and revival. Bible: Deuteronomy 32:1-18 Topic: Legacy; Remembering and Teaching the Next Generation; Heeding Warnings Purpose: To Listen Well to God's Teaching and Warnings Today. To Prepare the Next Generation to Serve God
A Spiritual discipline we need to train in, is the area of serving others, and serving in church. Giving of ourselves in our time, our talents and abilities, is what God desires from each of us. Serve God's by serving others, and follow the example of Jesus - "pick up the towel" and serve one another.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-15 NLT1 For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. 2 A time to be born and a time to die.A time to plant and a time to harvest. 3 A time to kill and a time to heal.A time to tear down and a time to build up. 4 A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. 5 A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a time to turn away. 6 A time to search and a time to quit searching. A time to keep and a time to throw away. 7 A time to tear and a time to mend. A time to be quiet and a time to speak. 8 A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace. 9 What do people really get for all their hard work? 10 I have seen the burden God has placed on us all. 11 Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end. 12 So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. 13 And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God. 14 And I know that whatever God does is final. Nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God's purpose is that people should fear him. 15 What is happening now has happened before, and what will happen in the future has happened before, because God makes the same things happen over and over again. • • •God Appoints Every Season of Life • • •Ecclesiastes 3:1 NLT1 For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. • • •Genesis 45:4-8 NLT4 “Please, come closer,” he said to them. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives. 6 This famine that has ravaged the land for two years will last five more years, and there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. 7 God has sent me ahead of you to keep you and your families alive and to preserve many survivors. 8 So it was God who sent me here, not you! You're only a boy, and he's been a man of war since his youth.” 34 But David persisted. “I have been taking care of my father's sheep and goats,” he said. “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, 35 I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. 36 I have done this to both lions and bears, and I'll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! 37 The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!”Saul finally consented. “All right, go ahead,” he said. “And may the Lord be with you!” • • •Serve God in Every Season • • •Isaiah 46:3-4 NLT3 “Listen to me, descendants of Jacob, all you who remain in Israel. Their two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in the land of Judah. And when they reached Moab, they settled there. 3 Then Elimelech died, and Naomi was left with her two sons. 4 The two sons married Moabite women. No one can resist or question it. 5 Those who obey him will not be punished. Those who are wise will find a time and a way to do what is right, 6 for there is a time and a way for everything, even when a person is in trouble. 7 Indeed, how can people avoid what they don't know is going to happen? 8 None of us can hold back our spirit from departing. None of us has the power to prevent the day of our death. There is no escaping that obligation, that dark battle. And in the face of death, wickedness will certainly not rescue the wicked. • • •Application:Every season in life brings fresh opportunities to serve God. This is message 24 in The Power of God's Name James 5:13-16 Anointing in the name of the Lord is an act of faith that declares total surrender to God's will. It is not a mystical ritual but a recognition that life, health, and even weakness belong fully to Him. Through prayer, confession, and dependence on His power, believers acknowledge that God alone has authority over their circumstances. Whether He grants physical healing or calls them to serve through ongoing weakness, the surrendered life becomes a testimony of His sovereignty, holiness, and grace. Sunday Evening- Pastor Larson- Genesis 4:1-16
This is message 60 in the Isaiah series. Isaiah 64:1-12 When people stop calling on the name of the Lord, they lose the nearness of God, the power of answered prayer, and the shaping work of His hand. Isaiah cries out for mercy, not from a place of innocence, but from a deep awareness that silence toward God leads to spiritual ruin. Only when people turn back to the Lord in Faith, repentance, and dependence can they be restored, shaped and delivered. A meditation preached at Lyncroft Centre, Toronto, on July 20, 2025.In Genesis 18 we have the account of the appearance of the Lord to Abraham at the Oak of Mamre. It is a wonderful account, in the heat of the day, with the cicada and the grasshoppers buzzing and the heat haze. Then we get a mirror image of this with the account of Bethany, and Jesus being treated, with his apostles by Martha and Mary. (Luke 10:38-42)It's all about where we can contemplate God and serve him in our life. Framing our stresses, anxiety, our multiple tasks in the light of God's love.Music: Michael Lee of Toronto.Thumbnail: Andrei Rublev Icon of Three Angels at Oaks of Mambre, 1410 in Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.

Wash Your Heart First - Matthew 15:1-20When the child of GodLooks into the word of GodAnd sees the Son of GodThey are transformed by the Spirit of GodInto the image of GodFor the glory of God-Warren Wiersbe“And when the one with a discharge is cleansed of his discharge, then he shall count for himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes. And he shall bathe his body in fresh water and shall be clean.” - Lev. 15:13In today's passage Jesus criticizes those who put external man-made rules like ritual hand-washing on an equal level with biblical commands. Ironically, they often rationalized disobeying God's clear commands, showing they had clean hands but not clean hearts.Matthew 15:1-20When man-made traditions crowd out simple faith and obedience - V. 1-9There were 2 big problems with the Pharisees approach:First, all that focus on the external non-essential ‘fencing' of the law became so important to them that it crowded out matters of simple faith and obedience, loving God and loving others. The second problem was that their love for their external ‘fences' became more important than dealing with their own sinful hearts that needed attention before their holy God.The biblical command to honor your parents includes fully grown children ensuring that their parents needs are well taken care of as they age. They insisted they loved God because they had washed their hands down to their elbows. Jesus said “If you loved God you would take care of your momma!”But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. - 1 Timothy 5:8The word for hypocrites (G5273) appears 17 times in the Bible, 13 in Matthew's gospel. It's a compound word, “An interpreter from underneath.” Actors in ancient Greek theater wore large masks, playing their part from underneath the masks.Jesus again addresses the heart of the matter - V. 10-20How did Jesus respond to the concern that the Pharisees were offended by Jesus? He basically said, “Of course they are offended – they are lost and going to Hell unless they repent!”Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte (convert), and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.” - Matthew 23:15What you put in your mouth goes through your stomach and is then expelled when you go potty. None of that natural process makes you spiritually unclean in God's eyes, or eating with unclean hands. Spiritual uncleanness comes when sin goes undealt with in the heart.Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. - Matthew 23:25-26Victory in the Christian Life comes from FOCUS:F is for Faith – Faith is the Victory that overcomes the world (1 John 5:4).O is for Obedience – We have 100% commitment to obey the Scriptures and the Spirit.C is for Confession - When we do sin, we confess our sin, receive God's forgiveness, and get on with faith and obedience.
