St. Bernard of Claivaux (1090 - 1153 AD) was the founder of the Cistercians, a reform order of the Benedictines, and was one of the Church's true mystics. He opposed the “intentionalism” of the heretic Peter Abelard with his quip: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” He also opposed an anti-pope, corrected a king, brokered peace in Europe, and had to nuance the doctrine of “just war” in the face of Christian losses in the Crusades. Some years back, I accompanied my grandkids to a park. They were full of energy and expectation. Upon arrival, I gave the usual warning - "Now, be careful as you tackle this playground!" Their response? "O.K. We will!" Well, they climbed equipment, explored, and jumped from tree stump to every conquerable obstacle. The oldest mid-teen made a bounding leap - landing in a wipe-out. Boom! "Are you OK?" "Ya. I'm fine." Then, another bounding leap - another wipe-out! Kersplat! "You still OK?" "Yup, I'm good." Remarkably, yet another attempted giant leap for "teen-kind." Ya-hoo-hoo-hoo! Trip-and-sprawl! Back up again - still grinning. Goodness! That brilliant offspring found every stumbling stone the park offered. Perhaps a successful visit?! In this episode of the Active Life podcast, the conversation dives into the story and significance behind the Active Life logo. Dr. Sean Best and the host discuss the journey from early logo concepts to the thoughtfully designed icon used today. They explore why the logo isn't just a visual representation—it encapsulates the brand's mission to bridge the gap between fitness and healthcare. The triangle in the logo represents the hierarchy of needs, starting with recovery and capacity at its foundation and ascending toward skill. The colors symbolize the biological, psychological, and social elements of human health. Dr. Sean shares the intentionality behind each design element, including the line that thins as it extends to signify growth and evolution. They also touch on the importance of consistency in branding and how a logo can shape public perception. The conversation offers valuable insights for coaches, gym owners, and business leaders on the importance of having a logo that represents their values and purpose. Whether you're considering a rebrand or refining your current approach, this episode emphasizes that branding goes beyond aesthetics—it's about building something meaningful and memorable. The episode concludes with practical advice for fitness professionals to align their branding choices with their ideal clientele, highlighting the significance of self-awareness when creating a professional image that resonates with both existing and potential clients.
In this episode of the Active Life podcast, Larry and Cody discuss the essential topic of setting and maintaining boundaries. The conversation begins with a humorous exchange about viral wildlife videos but quickly shifts to why boundaries can be so challenging, especially for those in service-oriented professions like coaching. They explore how societal expectations, historical survival mechanisms, and personal fears of social rejection contribute to boundary struggles. Larry emphasizes that boundaries are about safety and self-respect, while Cody adds that setting limits can ultimately strengthen relationships and create professional excellence. The hosts offer practical examples, such as handling last-minute client cancellations and navigating price negotiations with confidence. Larry shares a pivotal moment in his coaching career when he learned to assert his time boundaries, providing listeners with a real-world example of how to establish expectations effectively. The episode also touches on the importance of disqualifying clients when they aren't a good fit and how doing so can lead to more fulfilling client relationships and business success. The episode concludes with a reflection on the importance of saying “no” when necessary and maintaining integrity in relationships. The hosts remind listeners that while fear of rejection or financial loss can tempt them to compromise their standards, maintaining boundaries is key to a sustainable and rewarding coaching career. With a lighthearted closing anecdote about wildlife booklets, they wrap up with an inspiring call to action for coaches to take control of their professional journeys.

One of the main reasons people stop doing the activities they love is injury—especially to the lower back and knees, which are common in midlife and beyond. When most people see a doctor for these injuries, the primary focus is on pain relief, with little thought given to long-term recovery. However, if your goal is to return to—or even exceed—your previous activity levels, the approach needs to be more nuanced. In this week's podcast, we'll dive into the many options available today for healing, including biologics, surgeries, and even joint replacements, so you can keep doing what you love for life. Listen and learn: About PRP injections (and PRP + surgery) as potential treatment options The use of stem cells to support healing Timeline planning for knee injury recovery The possibilities around returning to running Links Dr Stone's Clinic ABOUT OUR GUEST Dr. Kevin R. In this episode, Cody and Larry explore why Doctors of Physical Therapy (DPTs) are increasingly drawn to Active Life's unique approach. Many DPTs feel constrained by traditional clinical roles that focus primarily on “Activities of Daily Living” (ADLs), such as basic mobility and pain management, rather than supporting clients in achieving higher levels of functional and recreational goals. The conversation highlights how Active Life fills this gap by training DPTs to address “Activities of Daily Interest” (ADIs), which empower clients to live fuller, more active lives. Cody and Larry also discuss the financial and personal frustrations faced by many DPTs. These professionals often enter the field with high hopes for meaningful, fulfilling work, only to find themselves burdened by student loans and confined within clinical structures that limit their earning potential and autonomy. Active Life's model offers DPTs a pathway to more fulfilling work that aligns with their passion for helping clients achieve real, lasting outcomes beyond what typical clinical settings allow. The episode closes with an invitation for DPTs and other clinicians to consider the benefits of joining Active Life. Cody emphasizes that Active Life's curriculum offers DPTs the skills and support needed to transition from a conventional clinical role to a more entrepreneurial, client-centered approach. This shift not only enhances DPTs' professional lives but also allows them to make a lasting impact on their clients' lives. In this episode of The Active Life Podcast, hosts Larry Gaier and Cody Ringle explore the powerful impact of internal dialog on both personal and professional outcomes. They dive into how our beliefs and the things we say to ourselves shape our behaviors and how this ultimately affects the results we get in life. The episode covers strategies to help listeners become more aware of limiting beliefs, shift their inner dialog, and guide others to do the same. Key Takeaways: The Power of Internal Dialog: What you say to yourself each day determines your actions and the outcomes you experience. Cody explains how identifying limiting beliefs is the first step toward creating lasting change. Humor as a Coping Mechanism: The hosts discuss how people often use humor to deflect discomfort, masking deeper issues that could be addressed for personal growth. Shifting from Victimhood to Ownership: A key theme in this episode is how people can move away from a victim mentality, where external factors control their outcomes, and take personal responsibility for their lives. The Role of Mentorship Over Coaching: Cody differentiates between mentorship and coaching, explaining that mentorship involves deeper, more meaningful guidance that empowers clients to create real change, as opposed to surface-level coaching. Framework for Shifting Beliefs: The episode introduces a process for helping clients uncover their inner dialog, become aware of limiting beliefs, and develop more empowering thoughts. The goal is to foster personal agency and guide clients toward better results, both personally and professionally. Memorable Moments: Larry shares a light-hearted story about using humor with a client to diffuse discomfort, which leads to a deeper discussion about how humor can often be a defense mechanism. Cody recalls two client success stories, including one about a client who applied for and got a higher-paying job, and another who left a relationship that no longer served her personal growth. Actionable Advice: Homework for Listeners: Write down the names of three people you influence weekly. For each person, think of three questions you've always been curious about but haven't asked. Use these questions to explore their beliefs about what they deserve, and see how their inner dialog influences their behavior. Asking thoughtful questions can help make the other person feel important and valued. A framework for conversation: The hosts introduce a six-question framework to guide conversations: Facing social anxiety: The discussion highlights how many people avoid conversations due to past negative experiences or fear of rejection.
